    Thank you for using beeswax instead of pine pitch. Pine pitch makes the water taste like turpentine. Pine pitch is not brewer's pitch as others have claimed. I have never been able to find a source for actual Brewer's pitch. I use beeswax inside my gourd canteens, and it works fine with no bad taste.

      The only issue I've found with the wax is having it crack and flake off due to fluctuations in the temperature.

      @@Ianbond21 That will happen. Usually not a problem in warm weather. I used to primitive camp @Ft. Frederick, MD during the full moon in early April. The temperature could be 90 F during the day and 25 F at night. I had to rescue a newbie one morning who only brought 2 surplus Army blankets to sleep on the ground with.
      He had hypothermia really bad. I wrapped him up in one of my 4 point trade blankets and gave him some hot coffee next to my campfire.

    I made such bottles 14 years ago and noticed the following. You should definitely add 1/3 carnauba wax to the beeswax. This makes the bottles even more stable. Greatings from Germany

    Hello! I just have a handful of questions:
    How long did you let the leather soak in the water bucket?
    When you put the leather inside the oven, what temperature did you set it to and how long was it in there for?
    What temperature did you heat the beeswax to?
    How much beeswax did you use?

    • @thequietshodan
      @thequietshodan 3 роки тому +1

      For how long to let leather be soaked in water, not long. I do leather work, and I just do a dunk or two. Sometimes I just run it under the faucet. Veg tan leather is really dry so it will soak it up quick. From what I have learned, because I want to make these also, is to use "veg tan" leather only. Don't use other types of leather because they have different types of chemicals in them to be treated with. As for the other two questions I watched "the bearded hobbit" and he goes through them with you, its about 3 videos long. Hope this helps.

    • @mattcrisci99

      I make drinking horns using beeswax to line the insides, Beeswax takes very well to beer and wine I've found but I wouldnt recommend hard alchohol personally. I'd use food grade resin instead if thats your aim but honestly metal flasks are just better for long term use. Because canteens tend to be fairly tougher to clean I'd also recommend do what they did historically and make 2, one for booze and one for water. Hope that helps!

    • @nigelwylie01
      @nigelwylie01 3 роки тому +2

      Leather workers’ Cement is PVA which remains flexible after drying, but costs 3-10 times more than normal PVA.
      If you are a woodworker, use whatever wood glue you have. It is very effective, so long as you abrade the surfaces of the flesh side, so the glue can soak in.
      If you want to use a contact adhesive like in this video, let it fully dry, then hammer it. This is what Cobblers use. It is very strong, but not really necessary if you’re going to stitch through it. I’ve used all sorts in my leatherwork. Even double sided sticky tape. But that’s not good for sewing through.
      That’s my pennyworth! You really can take your pick, and as a very wise source once told me ‘Use what you’ve got’.

      @@zakisworkshop there are more then one kind of glue usable for leather. I used polychloropren glue (it is called "88-th" or "Nairit" in Ukraine) and poliurethan glue or "Desmokol" . They are both basicly some kind of plastic dissolved in aceton or ethilacetate. And both are toxic. If you expose them to hot vax i have no idea how any of those going to react. Heat make them melt and not hold glued parts together animore. One of my friend is using water based glue for leather, but I find it's smell so bad, I dont use it and do not know it's features. And that green substance you are using, it is first tine I see it.
