0richbike Me, too! Got my first guitar in the summer of ‘66 - a Strat copy made in Japan under the Victoria name - and when I killed the guitar (neck snapped,) I saved the electronics. Gonna put ‘em in a Glarry and see how it sounds. They are “gold foil” pickups. Should be interesting, and if they sound good enough, they’ll probably end up in an Ibanez, as long as I don’t have to rout the body. (Been buying Glarry so I can teach myself fret dressing, electronics mods, etc., without endangering my babies, and the maple necks from Glarry are actually amazingly nice; by themselves they’re worth the price of admission. Lotta potential there.) It’s a good time to be a guitarist, ain’t it?

ToddtheExploder one major difference I noticed in my Teisco guitars (one Kimberly and one Kingston) is that they are some of the most microphonic pickups I have ever come across. Microphonic pickups can sound great, it add some of the acoustic resonance of the guitar into the signal sent to you amp. This comes from not dipping the coil in the pickup in wax, and maybe from the somewhat loose (in my guitars anyway) bit of foil hanging out in front of the coil that can vibrate.
So my main suggestion to people who want this sound, look for pickups that aren’t potted. There’s the disadvantage of dealing with feedback, but that’s one reason why I have a ton of very different cheap guitars.

The Firebird was introduced in 1963, at the height of pre-Beatles instrumental rock music (most of which
were being performed on Fenders), and I've always felt that Gibson was hoping to cut in on that market
which is why they decided to go with mini-humbuckers for a more single coil sound. I can conceive playing
surf rock on a Firebird (I do it all the time). A Les Paul, not so much. It just doesn't look (or sound) right.

The pickups you find on Epiphone guitars around the time Gibson bought the company are NOT mini-humbuckers. They are "New York-style" single coils which look similar to mini-humbuckers, but they are not. The mini-humbucker was invented by Gibson a couple of years after they had bought Epiphone.

When I earn my teaching credential, I'm gonna have someone build me a silver sparkle flying v with supertron pickups, and a fuzz circuit built into it like norman greenbaum had in his tele. It's gonna be freaking epic. That's kind of why I'm curious about their construction and components. Also, my favorite bourbon is Colonel E.H. Taylor bottled in bond by the buffalo trace distillery. Try it if you haven't. There's definitely an emphasis on oak and baking spices in the flavor profile. It's not overly sweet like other bourbons. Nice for the winter.

Dylan...love your stuff. Future video suggestion: How does the strength of a pickup affect tone? I have pickups that measure 15k that do not seem as powerful as ones measuring 8.5k. Are there other factors at play?

    • @jonnda
      @jonnda 4 роки тому +1

Mark Zanoni Yes. First of all, measuring the resistance of a coil of wire isn’t a good or perfect way to predict the output of a pickup. I don’t talk about the ohms of the windings on my transformer when I say that I have a 5 watt amplifier. No, I use watts.
That said, when comparing two pickups by the same manufacturer which probably use the same pickup structure, same magnets, the same diameter of copper around the bobbin-same everything else, then you can use the ohms to estimate how many windings each pickup has. That, in turn, can be an easy way to make an educated guess of the resulting power a pickup is capable of producing. But once you start comparing different pickup manufacturers, different models from the same manufacturer, or a Gibson pickup from 1950 verses a Gibson pickup from 1980, measuring the resistance in a coil of wire stops being a good way to compare pickups. Instead, I think there should be a new standardized way to test and advertise the output of a pickup, where by a pickup is put in a fixed standard position in front of a specific gauge string tuned to a standard frequency, and plucked by a robot with a specific amount of force. This would be used to calculate the wattage, amps, and volts. Things that matter. There might be a better way of doing this. It’s just an idea.
Second, how people perceive sound is not linear. Loudness is not linear. Which frequencies seem louder than others is not linear. Bass is perceived at different levels than high frequencies. This is why old hifi amps have a loudness eq button so the music can sound more normal at lower volume settings. I digress, but if you want to know more: www.physics.mcgill.ca/~guymoore/ph224/notes/lecture13.pdf
How does that relate to pickup design is that in general when you wind a pickup less it tends to be a brighter pickup that can’t put out as much low frequencies. So while it might not be able to drive your amp as hard, it can still “cut through the mix”. When you make a “hotter” pickup with more windings (assuming all else is the same), you increase the ability for the pickup to produce more of everything, especially what I have perceived to be more mid range and lows. This will drive an amp nicely and will work better for certain kinds of music, and may be not so great aesthetically for others.
Clear as mud? I didn’t even get into how the strength of the magnets can affect it, but I think this post is long enough.

You drink Scotch?! Knew I liked you! I have always had this question in my mind. You almost touched on it here but covered it in the neck/bridge and reverse wound middle single coil like a Strat. But, there is coil separation there. Why cant you make a two coil system sound like an authentic single coil when split? We want the best of both in a single guitar. Single coil when split, hum when not. Not an engineer but have heard the signal negates itself if you put them close enough together. That true? PRS hadxa 5 single coil system but they looked like active single coils or Lace types. Thought idea was cool but couldnt afford it.

You can’t forget Ray Butts. He was making humbucking the pickups for Chet Atkins in 1955 that became Filter’trons. I think Butts and Lover was working on dual coil pickups about the same time. Butts said he got the idea from tape heads a German company was using to eliminate hum.

    Thanx!

Have you done any videos about mismatched coils in humbuckers ? I have a pair of older DiMarzio minis that have a 6k/10k imbalance, which I want to experiment with as far as splitting, tempted to use the SD switching HB frames, but here’s the question: why so big a difference? I assumed that Larry had some old mismatched PAFs that he thought sounded cool, but do you have any comment on that?

I don't know about non-firebird minis but Epiphone firebird pickups are a great-sounding humbucker! for the low-chugging stuff, I find they're not that different than a regular-sized humbucker maybe just a little tighter. but on the high notes they really sound different I can hear a higher octave over tone in there! my favorite bridge pickup all day long but it has to be the Epiphone kind I've never tried the Gibson one but I heard they're not the same. the Epiphone ones are hotter

Hey Dylan how are ya? I received a mini HB for free some time ago and haven't done anything with it yet because I figured it was probably just a cheapo, and not worth much let alone my time. Well, last weekend I decided that since I have a pickguard that came with the pup, and some extra pots and switches for testing purposes, I didn't have much to lose by trying it out. So, after all was said and done, I plugged into my Blues Jr. and was actually rather impressed. It sounds pretty damn sweet. Not like an HB or a single, but more like a fat and slightly hotter single. Anyways, I wanted to know more about it, but cannot find any info on it. The only marking (X-Sound) is stamped on the brass baseplate. It has a solid chrome cover with no holes or exposed pole pieces, and no pole pieces protruding through the baseplate. It has a single lead with shielding beneath the exterior sheathing. Not like the vintage type exterior braided sheilding. The DCR of the pup reads ≈6.47kΩ. That's all I can tell you about this mini hb. Now I'm wondering if there's anything you can tell me about it? Who is X-Sound? What are the specs of this pup? I wanted to wire it to a 4-way with the bridge for series in my tele, but I didn't want to go through the hassle of desoldering and removing the cover to give it its own ground if the pickup isn't worth it. I'm not assuming you can definitely answer my ?'s, but maybe you can or can find out. Maybe someone else on here will know? Thanks for any help you may have?

Hi I have a comment from your which pickup should I choose video..... Hey Dylan love the videos... so I play a cheap as f...epiphone special 2 a friend and I split the coils but those humbuckers still don’t sound clear enough for me , generally I like hearing my mids and I don’t like that razor sharp Tone from the top two strings. They always sound off like they are actually sharp even thought every tuner I can find say the are in tune. What would you recommend? Ps I usually play with the neck pickup or both very rarely the bridge by it self, through a mod plus amp I built from their kit I think it’s 8amps out of a 25watt mod Jensen speaker. I built my own little practice combo with with the kit. I often run just a little blues driver for dirt and sometimes the boss my 2 when I want to learn megadeath or g n r songs but I’ll switch right over to songs by Tracy Chapman or Gordon lightfoot. So I’m all over the map with tone/ sounds. Help. :)

Scotch??? I love Campari, I'm offended! lol. Seriously??? People have been offended by you drinking scotch on a video? Wow!
For a more serious question, so do you think of a typical hot rails pickup as being kind of a mini firebird then? Or are there significant design differences other than overall dimensions?
Thanks again for all the content and info!

Late 50's Gibson electrics sounded great - still do. By the mid 60's, Gibson electrics sounded like crap, in my ever humble opinion. How do I know that? I was there. I am that old. And, yes I have owned both. Is it the PU's? Is it associated electronic components? I don't know. I am no longer into electrics. I have one left, a 67 SG - a pain in the neck.

I really just wanted to know which one was brighter and less muddy. That’s it. I don’t care about the construction, the history, coils, pulls...I don’t give a shit about how it’s made. Which one is cleaner and which one is muddier. Really wish he would have just started with that.
Nevertheless I am grateful for all this information I will never remember or even care about. Even for me, the details are appreciated.

  • @donsmith5385

Gibson Firebird was built to compete with the strat, hence why Seth Lover designed them to be bright, adjusting screws were added to the PAF because salesman wanted a selling point, adjusting screws are useful but not needed, Ray Butts invented the Filtertron humbucker pickup before the PAF. So I agree that the magnets in mini humbucker make the difference in sound compared to the PAF type, but the strat sized humbucker sounds exactly like the big PAF. So the coils being closer? Not sure that has anything to do with the sound difference

Do they make a double humbucker but not with poles but with the slug like what's used in a mini humbucker? What kind of tone could you get if you did the same with a double humbucker as they did with the mini's, one with poles and slugs and one with just slugs. If there is no such beast, well Dylan, get to making some and let us hear them lol. As for the older PAF's being better, of course they were better Dylan!! You seem to know a lot about this stuff and you don't know that the older PAF's were much much MUCH better than anything newer? What makes them so much better you might be asking? That answer is quite simple, because they are older and have they just gotta be better cause those older ones are so romanticized!! Lol, yes I am being sarcastic with you about this! But that actually is why most people think those older ones are better, because they are old and everyone always says how great they sounded. I guarantee you that if you took two pups and made them with the same materials that were used in say the 50's and stuff used in 2019, if there was much of a difference the 2019's would probably sound better.

Weird question. What happens if you reverse the magnets? I ask because I recently bought a set cheapo humbuckers because that was cheaper than buying just the bridge humbucker. Since I'm not using the neck humbucker I took it apart. Put it back together and dont know if I put the magnets in right, will it sound any different?

There's a guy called Tom Doyle who was Les Paul's right hand man I've been told, I'd love to know more about him. I'm always interested in the plan B's. All those ideas that someone was working on before someone else cracked it and closed the race down. What was the guy Seth Lover beat to the prize doing?
