I've learned so much from your videos and you gave me the courage to modify my Squier strat, I've always liked tinkering with stuff so I'm really looking forward to seeing you upgrade the Ibanez AX120 which is the guitar I voted for so I'm excited that's the guitar you picked, really hope I win, It would mean a lot 👍 "30,000 Subscriber Contest"
Damn, sometimes I wish I was born and raised in the States, curse my Canadian Heritage! Either way though, I hope whoever gets it will play the shit out of it, thats what I'd do
Very nice of you Dylan to offer this give away. I was already a subscriber for a while. I am always watching your videos, i like them a lot because of how much they are informative. I just dont comment too much on the videos cause i would be asking a lot of questions and opinios XD. Unfortunately for me i am not within USA, i'm from Brazil, therefore, i am out of the contest, but i wish luck for you to grow your channel and for the people that can participate in winning this.
You are extremely knowledgeable. I realize how fortunate I am to have old man Van Zandt rewind (in 19991) my 67 Lead Telecaster pick-up. He was a Great guy. He showed be everything. The hand feed pickup winder (not like ones of today it did not count turns) he got from Leo Fender in his shop, a little 10' X 12' wooden shed in his backyard. He had by year all every make & model of pickup cut apart with notes & diagrams describing the materials & the assembly process weird colored magnets (the blue-ish ones stood out) & all kinds of winding wire (not just copper) from all from Pickups he had taken apart. It was a working Museum of History on Pickups.
I’ve been playing for 20 years now and have only recently started to take more than a passing interest in how everything actually works in the guitar. Before, especially in the early days, I was happy to just play and enjoy that aspect of it, but as I get older I’m taking much more of an interest in how it all works, especially pickups. This channel has been excellent for learning about that and I’m glad some of the videos popped up in my recommended videos.
No big surprise that the reissues would short change you on tone... they haven’t used good pickups in anything but their custom shop builds for a lot of years. Thanks for digging into them and figuring out how to fix them! I’ve seen them online and couldn’t figure out what was so special about them... now I know!
I’m loving these videos and the down to earth one on one feel your videos have. I feel like I’m taking a college course on guitar electronics. If you end up seeing this, I’d be curious to know what the biggest differences are between modern day and vintage pickups. Besides the output rating and construction methods, what makes vintage pickups so “magic”?
looks at channel name: DylanTalksTone 🙄 God forbid someone who builds the things explain them to us. it seems to me watching a video of a guy noodling around on a guitar is more 'all about him'.
I have a ‘72 thin line tele reissue with stock pick-ups. I am very curious about doing something to make the pick-ups sound better. They behave a little strange sometimes. On certain levels of gain, the low E string is WAY too loud. I have no idea whether this is a set up thing. But the guy I purchased it from is a studio musician. At any rate, thanks for the awesome channel! Really learning a lot.
Really excited to see this. I’ve come to really appreciate your vids because you provide actual useful information. I have a request, if I may. I would love to see a vid or series (however long it would take) explaining the differences in all the different types of pickups (humbucker, single coil, lipstick, p90, hot rail, gold foil, et al) and why a neck pickup is different than bridge, why you slant one or the other or both, etc... all that shit.
I actually rebuilt a Hohner 1978 Telecaster copy with the HH setup. I accidentally bought a pickguard with the Wide Range Humbucker cutouts. Fortunately I found a mounting bracket to adapt a WRH to a standard Humbucker size. It looks great and plays nice too.
Your videos have taught me about guitar electronics better than the many, many other videos I've watched. Your approach just sticks better, and your info is technical enough to be practicable. I am curious what you would have to say about a completely nontraditional approach to pickups, with neodymium magnets, etc.
Hey Dylan, Can you do a Filter’Tron Vs PAF breakdown? I searched & didn’t see one already, unless I missed it? Also, I have a Tele with Seymour Duncan Vintage Stack pickups. They sound just like single coils to me, but without the hum, how is this achieved? I also don’t understand about their DCR? It is 18 for the bridge & 15.8 for the neck, but their actual volume output is nowhere near as loud as either the Gibson Classic 57’s, which are around 8 DCR, for example, or the Tyson Tone Lab P-90’s I have which are 7-8 DCR. Why & what does all that mean? Thanks!
They are humbuckers but stacked coils vs side by side... thats how they kick the hum... im personally not a fan of these Duncan pickups, they are the same pick ups used by D'angelico for their Offset dual "single coil" guitar... tye bradford
Dylan, I'm liking these comparison videos. Also the ones af why the tele sounds like a tele and a strat sounds like a strat. 2 questiobs for you. Are the humbucker in an h/s/s strat tge same design as a paf? And can you take two fender single coils and smash them together in one case to get a humbucker? Would it be closer to a wide range if you can?
James Crider I have a Aria thinline copy that was obviously modified before I got it. Someone at some point put what I thought was a humbucker in the neck with a tap switch. Years later I opened it up to find that the humbucker was actually 2 single coils that were bolted together. I never knew because it sounded fat and smooth.
I'm a "newbie" when it comes to guitars and guitar playing. I'm 52 years young and plan to start taking lessons this summer. I own a Blackstar HT1, an Orange Micro Dark, a Bugera 1x12 cab, a powered pedalboard with some pedals and a Epiphone Special P90. I'd love to have a 2nd guitar to keep at home to practice/jam, while I travel with my Epi to lessons. Thanks and congrats when you hit 30k subscribers!
I watched a bunch of these videos last week and meant to comment - I really love the way you explain and discuss and generally chat about the different pickups! Reminds me of the good journalism about music gear we got in the 80s from knowledgeable writers before the flood of opinions and cork sniffing that came with the bulletin board and forums era once the net arrived! Great videos mate!
Commenting not because of giveaway but because I've caught a few of your videos in my recommendations and they're absolutely fantastic. If I had one suggestion though, it would be some sound examples. I'd love to hear what an *actual* wide-range humbucker sounds like compared to the modern variants and your version, and how that compares to a standard Gibson-style pickup. I was considering some for a project guitar recently but decided against them because there just aren't good, in depth audio comparisons. A pickup demo just doesn't cut it without a comparison point, just like a demo of an overdrive pedal has little merit without comparison to others.
I gotta say, the new Shawbuckers WRHBs are quite amazing, stunning almost. Still, I'm having another pair of reissue PUs completely rebuilt to original spec, threaded polepieces, reflector plate etc.
I've noticed bass pickups with that wide range appearance (3 up, 3 down) in the past. Is that a similar design inside, or a completely different beast?
Although it is an “old” video, I like this clear explanation about the difference in the first place, and the fact there is hardly a difference since the reissue’s. Thnx!
Awesome! I had commented on the give away video about how this Ibanez would be the best choice for anybody.. And with mods like push pull coil splitting, coil tapping, bigsby, 50s LP wiring, etc.., it makes perfect sense to select that Ibanez! 👏👏👏glad you went with the Ibanez😁👌 Greetings from India!
AWESOME!! This was a GREAT video!! I was laying awake most of the night wondering wtf the difference was. Every question I had about the difference you answered, and more. The way you melodically communicated the information was outstanding, diagrams and all. Really, outstanding. As well, Very impressed you stopped 🛑 for the school bus 🚌. It's the law. 😁👍🏻
CuNiFe also has the problem of degaussing relatively rapidly. International Magnaproducts claims to have come up with a replacement material with similar specs, but I haven't heard of anybody using them yet.
Thank you so much for teaching me something I didn't know I needed to know. Now I want something with wide range humbuckers because it seems like a sound I'd like. In my ignorance I didn't know what the difference was and just ignored Fenders with humbuckers... Live and learn.
You should do an A/B comparison video between original WRHBs (with the proper 1M pots), reissue WRHBs (with 250k pots) and PAFs. I've only ever played a Squier Tele Custom with WRHB reissues and really liked it, so I'm curious how the old ones compare.
I'm endlessly fascinated by hearing about how different types of technology work, and I never would have thought guitar pickups would be as interesting as you make them out to be.
The explanation of the two humbucking pickups clarifies have Fender was able to obtain their sound while increasing performance. Thanks for clarifying the mystery. Wish I had these on my Fender Blacktop Strat.
Cool video, very informative. I have a set of original 70s vintage WR Seth Lovers in a project Telecaster with 1 meg pots and it is absolutely beautiful on the ear. Those pickups sat in a box for 30 years before I realized what I had on my hands. Awesome!
Hey Dylan, Merry Christmas from California! Not many people play electric guitar in my town so you’re teaching me just about everything I know, thanks!!
I literally was looking to learn how to install humbuckers on my old Ibanez and found your channel, very informative and well researched. I watched the video on the telecaster that you converted sounded great. I would love for you to help me redo my old guitar.!!! I'll be watching you grow! Peace, Bobby Zapp!
I've been watching your videos for a couple years, I've learned a lot from them. I like your approach to separating the hype and BS from the actual facts about tone, build materials and hardware.
It would be nice to have an audio comparison of the pickups you were talking about and you could talk about the differences that you're hearing as the audio is playing. That would help those of us who don't have a lot of different pickups understand better what you are talking about as you describe them. Looking forward to more great videos!
I really like these videos for the technical aspects of pickups. I've learned a lot since discovering your channel about a month ago. I'd like to see one on Gretsch style Filtertron pickups someday, or Seymour Duncan Hot Rails.
Really enjoyed the video! I’d really like to see a breakdown of the Filtertron vs. the Wide Range. Seems like there would be some overlap between the two with regards to the sound. There’s some interesting history of the Filtertron that could be interesting to juxtapose against the Wide Range and even the PAF.
wiring your neck pickup reverse polarity on a 2 humbucker sounds awesome with both pickups on. better yet throw a series-parallel switch on there to make it hotter and thicker for metal chugs and shredding.
I thought I had already subscribed, but come to find out when you mentioned your analytics I happened to be in that unfortunate grouping. That has been taken care of. There's a great amount of content that I've enjoyed learning about here...keep up the great work!
Another great video. I’ve seen another video on these wide range pickups, but it didn’t talk about their construction. Cool stuff. I would have thought they had used a thinner wire to wind the coils, but I was wrong. Cool to know it was a bigger pickup than the Gibson style. The other video didn’t mention that, so now I know I have to have a guitar that dedicated to the larger pickup to use one. Thanks!
Dylan, your insights into the electronics that are behind the sounds we love on the electric guitar are unparalleled on UA-cam. I’m just a beginner when it comes to the engineering aspect of electric guitars, amps, and foot pedals but I appreciate your knowledge and expertise. OW GIVE ME THAT DAMN GUITAR! 😂
Years ago I used to have two of the 70’s re-issues (one burgundy and the other black) with the wide range humbucker. The black I had modified to resemble Andy Summer’s Telecaster and added a Bigsby. Sadly I gave both to students but I miss those guitars.
Like how honest you were about the Lawler pickups, I have just recently subscribed to the channel and every video is informative, keep up the good work.
The info on pickups you provide is top notch. Thank alot! I'd appreciate a commentary on the Fender noiseless pickups: how close do these humbuckers come to the sound of a fender single coil.
I really enjoy your channel. I think the biggest draw for me is your focus on creating a pleasant toxic-free space for people who enjoy guitar. Love what you do, love the videos, love your approach and philosophy. Keep up the great work! *fingers crossed it’ll be my lucky day and I win this contest*
Been going through a bunch of old vids of yours and really trying to nail down my knowledge of guitar electronics, great info that every guitarist should be aware of even if they arent doing the mods themselves!
Dylan, thanks for the great info you supply us. I love the fact that you're honest and your no B.S. policy is refreshing! Keep up the good work, I appreciate ya.
I'm actually really excited to finally understand the wide range. I know I had a buddy who says the new wide ranges aren't the same. I havent been able to open one up so that was really cool to learn. Jared Brandon of Brandon would pickups also makes some awesome pickups.
I love the info I get from this channel. And you do a great job of explaining things. I"m always tinkering with my guitars. I"m going to put one of these wide range humbuckers in my single pickup strat to see if I can get a usable tone from it.
Ha! I'm one of those 73 percentiles... I like to tinker on my guitars and your videos come up in my suggestions. I have one of those old Fender humbuckers in my 76 Tele Custom and absolutely love it! Changed the bridge pickup half a dozen times over the years but not humbucker... Great vid and explanation about them (That I didn't know) and I will be watching more... Thanks and hope you go WAY beyond 30K!!!
Very cool contest! I really like your videos breaking down the differences between pickups. What are your thoughts on the Seymour Duncan antiquity line? I have two of their P90’s in my Les Paul and I really like them over the standard Gibson P90’s.
Thanks for explaining the differences between PAFs and Wide range pickups. I thought before that the difference between them was that the bobbins were side by side square bobbins with one bobbin for the top 3 strings and one for the bottom 3 strings, hence the split screw layout. As always I learnt something from your channel. Great choice on the AX120. The AX/AR body style is my favorite body style out of any guitar.
Super informative as always. Really don’t mind not being eligible for the contest but living in the US but good luck I hope you got the target real soon and have a blast with all that’s involved.
It’s nice to hear someone talking about inductance and interaction between parts instead of just resistance. Thx
It would have been even better if he mentioned equal loudness curves and resonant frequencies.
This is the most niche comment I’ve ever read - apart from engineering or physics or body building videos; amazing

Does Fender make any wide range humbuckers the way they use to make them or have they switched to the new construction at all price points?
To the extent of my knowledge NO one makes them with CuNiFe anymore. Go look for originals on ebay or reverb. Insane prices for the “real” ones.

Badass channel with a great contest. You first hooked me with your videos on shielding. Keep it up and have a happy new year!
Great video! I’m still new to guitars, but I love learning more about them
Man, since finding your channel last year, I've absolutely multiplied my knowledge bank many times over!
Great video - I didn't realize these pickups were larger than regular humbuckers.
I really like these videos for the technical aspects of pickups. I've learned a lot since discovering your channel about a month ago. I'd like to see one on Gretsch style Filtertron pickups someday, or Seymour Duncan Hot Rails.
Loving the videos that are a bit more technical. Keep debunking the myths but also giving us the good Oil. Thanks Dylan
Thanks!
I really enjoy your videos, been playing guitar for 30 years and learn new stuff with just about every video you put out. Thanks and keep rocking!
Appreciate you singing the praises of the lollar wide range humbuckers. Shows that you really value quality and tone, not just business
Dude those things are so good.
DylanTalksTone alright, no more until I have the money 😂😂
I've had WRH in my guitar for 3 years and didn't really know much about them until now! Thanks
The Railhammer Humcutter pickups actually do the split coil thing people think WWHB’s do. Very cool stuff
Just discovered your channel. Just what I need. I have a new soldering kit under the Christmas tree. Looking forward to some serious tinkering...
The detailed breakdown of pickups gives much needed insight into the build & design aspect of guitars available on the market today - thank you!
Thanks for the breakdown. I have a 2011 thinline mexican and haven’t really been in love with the sound and now i kinda see why.
These are some of the most useful videos I've seen this year (2019).
Thank You for covering the WRHB. P90 Staple and WRHB are my favorite pickups.
New subscriber here. Thanks UA-cam for recommending this video lol. Now I'm off to binge-watch your pickups comparison videos...
Love the video, been finding this channel super informative!
Awesome video. I'm new to learning the inside of guitars and your videos are very helpful.
30,000 subscribers guitar contest, good luck to all, Merry Christmas, and thank you Dylan for all of the info you provide
It’s amazing how little I know with so many years of experience I have. I’m playing catch-up here. Thanks for your terrific videos. Keep them coming
Thanks for posting this. I'm new to the wide range humbucker and want to learn more about the thinline tele.
I’ve always wanted to try out real Wide-Range Humbuckers. Seems like it would be the holy grail for me.
Ditto. $600 for a modern pair of pickups though... Hard to get past the wife
Cool video. Lots of details that I didn't already know.
Thanks for making the video!
Learning so much about pickups from this channel. Thx.
I was looking at a jazzmaster, and your p-90 vs. jm. pups made me a subscriber. Thanks for informative, concise presentations.
Great to see the channel growing! Thanks for the knowledge
