@@ronbzoom8531 mini humbuckers sound amazing. They're still full fledged humbuckers that rock your arse off but they've got so much more definition than regular humbuckers. The added treble combines perfectly with the dark mahogany. Throw a bit of overdrive at it and they're perfect for blues. The neck pickup is way more useful than the normal full humbucker on a regular les Paul. My favourite is still p90s on a mahogany les Paul or SG but yeah Firebird pickups I haven't heard a lot of. That being said, a P90 in Jazzmaster's bridge position can be a mighty beast (and so is the Talisker by the way). The Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster actually comes with P90-ish Jazzmaster-format pickups (six screws and bottom plate) which only adds to the confusion out there.

I read an interview with Seth Lover where he didn't go into details, but when asked why the pole pieces are rectangular, he said his ethos was always ,if you're going to improve on something ,you may as well make it a little different, make it your own. He also said that he really didn't care for adjustable poles as players would always adjust them too close to the strings and in his words "slur the note".
Dylan, that was SO informative. I think you must be the only one discussing this as I have watched a ton of videos and yours was the only one that truly explained it. Thank you!
I’m a commercial electrician and I will say this about the grounding fuse issue. First off, don’t fuse it. It could go the other way and leave you without a proper path to ground. If you are worried about electrocution, get an in line GFCI. A GFCI (ground fault circuit interruptor) will open the circuit if it sees a ground fault, which is basically what you are describing. Even if the mechanical ground is missing, the neutral on an outlet is still ground. If the GFCI device sees current leave on the hot leg but not return on the neutral leg, it will open the circuit. That said, I’m not sure how easy it would be to put line voltage through an amp and all the way to the strings to begin with, but if you did and you are using a GFCI device. You will instantly open the circuit when you touch the strings if you are grounded.

So what's the deal with the jazzmaster pickups with adjustable pole pieces, you often see on squiers and such. More like a p90 or more like a traditional jazzmaster pup? Thank you
Absolutely right about the ohms. I have a Filtertron on my Tele Partscaster in the neck. I had a lipstick pickup in the bridge that was double the ohms. That pickup only acted as a treble cut. It was not until I got a SD Quarterpounder that the pickups balanced out with the middle position. So for years it was an either/or setup, either neck or bridge. The middle was just the neck cut down on tone. On paper that Filtertron looks very weak however it is a loud...loud pickup. I think ohms wise its around 4 ohms and the Quarterpounder is like 16 ohms...sound wise they match pretty good. Much happier now. It is the Tele in my pic by the way.

There are NO videos at all on youtube about the tech stuff about these guitars AT ALL! Can you do a video comparing them to the P90 and Jazzmaster pickups also?
How much of a difference do the Fender style pickups with individual magnetic pole pieces have on sound as compared to the bar magnets that span the width of the coil? The Fender styles seems to be a much better fit for twangy styles such as Surf Music and the bar magnet style seems to be much smoother suitable for jazz styles.
Floating mini humbuckers in archtops sounds like a fun one to do next. Nice video. There are some old tube amps that do not have a ground. There are mods that can be done to add a ground and any amp tech can do this. Not only will be safer, there should be less noise as well.

Hello. Since a P90 uses a bar magnet to magnetise the (otherwise non-magnetic) pole pieces ... how does this compare with individually magnetic pole pieces? I mean gererally, the principle and the effect. Also, would you recommend swapping a ceramic bar magnet with an AlNiCo one to improve unsatisfactory stock Strat or Tele pickups, and/or is it worth actually inserting AlNiCo rods? Thanks.
YES ! HUMBUCKER VS MINI HUMBUCKER would be nice ! Do you also have a vid about how to construct a TAP wire on a strat pickup please ? Not SPLIT but TAP coil,.. so add a third wire somewhere in the middle ? Nobody ever talkes about that ? I know how it"s done, BUT how can you insulate the third wire the best without a HUMP in your wire ? Thanks Dylan ! Greets from Belgium.
I agree that P90s are the best pickup…it’s amazing to think of how much the early electric guitar guys got RIGHT. Like, so right that things such as the telecaster, strat, P90…are Still used in much the same form they were initially created in. Great videos, this is around my 3rd or 4th; I really enjoyed the one on Mini-Hums vs Humbuckers vs Firebird Pups. They’ve all been really informative & fun, but I feel like I REALLY needed that mini-hum vid.
Ok…first: love this vid series. Quick, easy descriptions. Question: how do all the modified pups factor in?!? Bucker sized p90s…jazz master pups that ARE buckers…single coil sized buckers? It seems like the height/width of the basic structure dictates windings, and therefore tone.
talisker is delicious. check out other island and islay distilleries for more of the smokey/peaty flavor. also be sure to check out japanese, french, and american single malts--they won't have the same character, but some of them are really good if you can find them. Great video as always. couldn't have re-wired my guitars without you

Thanks from Germany, even i do understand what your talking about ;-). To complete the line, what's about dual rail humbucker in singlecoil format? Does it make sense to put one of these in the neck of my Telecaster? Or maybe my Strat? I don't want to buy a LP..... Live long and prosper 🖖
I have an ESP Eclipse series guitar looks and spec's out identical to a Gibson les paul where the pick up holes go, ok so I wanted to know if your P90s that you make would fit my Eclipse Series in the neck position? thanks in advance and keep making these videos I've learned so much from you over the last few days on guitar and pick up stuff so thankful!

I wonder if he saw that discussion and that's why he decided to make this video. It's apparently a widespread belief that they're p90s, but if you play them for just a minute it's immediately obvious how different they sound
House of Shred i mean fender is partially at fault for this due to putting p90s in the classic player, squier mascis and deluxe model jazzmasters. you can check the polepieces for that. also strat pickups in the japanese, american pro and performer models. Terribly inconsistent
DylanTalksTone is the Nutnfancy of UA-cam guitar channels
Well, I just learned a whole lot in a very short time. Very well explained!! THANK YOU!!
"Yes, you could go to great lengths to get electrocuted during a gig but I have a solution for that...don't do that." haha, I tend to agree :) Great video!!
Thanks.
ok now please explain the difference between P90's and G&L MFD jumbo's (as in the Asat 2)
Just discovered this channel. Love your style. Would love to see a video comparing why the Lees Paul and SG sound so different- I'm a diehard SG fan.
Mini humbuckers please! Thanks for creating this content. It's super helpful!
I would love to figure out a way to have a 90 in the neck and Jazzmaster in the bridge. Maybe tilt the Jazzmaster in the bridge?
Sure I’m learning a lot from your videos and wanted to thank you for everything your doing great job teaching us !
Greets from Belgium.
great choice on the whisky!
How are those magnets oriented? Are they opposing each other? Or attracting? I m curious
Single malt vs. blended, and add in something about barden gatton design pickups.
How about the Gibson Staple pickups, how they are made, the design principles behind it, etc…..
Great video as always. couldn't have re-wired my guitars without you
WOW ! Learned much form this vid .. great with the scotch .. Adds real flavor to the whole presentation..
My favorite single malt, knew I liked this channel
Good taste, good videos, I've been learning about pickups . Love the talisker. I have many bottles at home, many in opened, but a talisker 10 does not last me long it taste too good.
Question about P90 magnets. What is the polarity facing the screws? S -S or N-S or N-N?
I love to play cleans with some modulation and verb, wondering if id be better off with Yamaha 611 p90s, j mascis jm (p90esque) or a JM
Cool detailed information! Refreshing
Mini-Humbuckers please! especially the fabled original Epiphone Mini's, I hear they have a unique construction?
What's up with Mosrite pickups?
So Dylan - Let's see you explain the - Lace 'Sensors' or 'Alumitone' 'Eddycurrent' pickups.
Plz do a general humbuckers discussion including tron style, mini style, PAF style and all others
I love P-90s and I tend to put them in most of my builds over humbuckers. Good info Dylan thanks this vid.
I guess the confusion is just because p-90s just look like a Soapbar pickup. But the screw holes are a dead giveaway. I vote for Minihumbuckers vs Firebird Pickups next. Worst shock I ever got was playing in a garage barefoot, went to sing and my amp must have been in ground lift. Wham!
I think gretsch filtertrons vs paf humbuckers would be a cool vid (or any other humbucker vs gretsch filtertrons I'd like to know why do filtertrons sound so good)
Maybe it is possible to make a hum cancelled p90? Splitting the coil? That would be cool to try in a guitar
Hello! My casino's dogear p90 have chrome metal covers.. many people say that plastic cover it d be better for the tone..as the metal cover brings something dull and muffled to the tone..can you say that?? Thank s
