    In this video, I look back at one of the most infamous Castlevania games; Castlevania: Judgment for the Wii, which released in 2008 to almost unanimous negativity. with common criticisms aimed at its controls, artstyle, and poor balancing. Some people say that this game was over-hated, so in this video I am looking back on it to see if all of the hate is deserved.

    I knew the guy who held Rank 1 online as Dracula for a couple weeks at launch. Comically Drac is considered low tier, or at least was at the time. That man is just a beast. He's insanely good at King of Fighters and pretty great at Tekken at BlazBlue too, just got a knack for fighters.

    I'd be down for a sequel. Add more characters, refine the gameplay, bring in co-op PvE, and maybe slap a DMC collab on there.

    It’s really a shame Judgement indirectly derailed the entire franchise, acting almost as the catalyst of the game series absence we can still feel today. Absolutely WILD to think about. I remember finding out that Richter wasn't in this game and immediately losing interest. It seems like they wanted to have two of each kind of character, which is why Shanoa and Maria are a pair of sorts, and also explains why there's only two Belmonts. It's still insane to make a game like this with only two Belmonts, being that Castlevania is mostly about the Belmont clan.

    • @lemonov3031
      @lemonov3031 28 днів тому

      Because Belmonts would play the same. They all use the same whip and they all use the same set of special weapons. It makes sense why they didn't fill their already small character roster with a bunch of the same playing whip wielding buff men.

Have different subweapons, both in functionality and aesthetics. Have different movesets. In Soul Calibur, lots of characters use swords, yet they all use it differently, so there's no reason we should reduce a fighter to "ah, they use the whip".

      @@du0lol Street Fighter can have clone characters because it's a long series with a lot of games. For the first ever Castlevania fighter game, it made perfect sense to go for variety, and maybe add more clones with future entries, which it never got.
      Even if you try to make them a bit different, it would still be worse than just having different characters. Fighter game where you just whip each other to death with no alternative would be boring and pointless, and you don't understand a bit of game design if you seriously suggest that over actual variety.

    • @du0lol
      @du0lol 27 днів тому

      @@lemonov3031 dude, I AM a game designer lmao. This is actually a very interesting problem to tackle as a designer, because you need to find different fighting styles for each Belmont while still being true to their personalities. Maybe Simon could be a little stiffer, focusing on long-range attacks and working as a zoner, while Richter would be more agile and have the weapon breaks instead of just the subweapons as attacks, being more dangerous at short ranges. Then you could have Trevor as a variation of Simon, for instance. Or even bring out Julius, which could be more flexible since he has no game attached to him (outside of a boss battle in Aria of Sorrow IIRC). Making a Castlevania fighter and only having two Belmonts is like making a Resident Evil fighter and only having, like, Chris and Leon as playable characters.

    • @lemonov3031

      @@du0lol Except it doesn't have just two Belmonts. Most of the characters present are playable in their own games, and with a limited roster it makes sense to pick playable characters from different games to add variety. That's also the reason for crazy character designs, which I personally like but it's understandable that some people do not.
      I can understand that someone like Golem could be swapped for Richter, but making 2/3 of the entire roster just Belmonts is nonsense.

    I love Judgment. The system is not so terrible as describe, but more wacky arcadig like Power Stone (a good comparison). I played it for hours till I got everything and yes it is very very unbalanced, but the spectacle supers and the great music made it to a good damn time, also I like the art style of the characters.
    And now to the video. WTF it is like Tekken or Soul Calibur? NO! It's not a 3D fighter, it's a arena fighter like Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm or Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaishi or even the field phase of Pokken. Free movement in a (mostly) circle like arena with a jump button and auto aiming for some attacks. 3D fighters like Tekken or even DOA are on a 2D plane (like Street Fighter), but you can sidestep around your opponent. And yes Power Stone fall under the arena fighter too.
    Fighting games are PvP games, mostly 1 on 1 and with attacks, blocks and throws the basics of rock paper scissors strategies (which is not the full spectrum of a fighting games, but for the comment length sake). Judgment is a typical arena fighter, which are fun, unbalanced and have busted elements. So for what Judgment wanted to achieve, it achieves that.
    Also Survival mode is even one of the base fighting game modes. Judgment is even one of the few fighting games that have, with the Castle mode, something more to offer for the singleplayer except of the default Story/Arcade and Survival modes.

    Unironically you can blame the Castlevania fanbase for this game. This came from an interview with Igarashi years ago. When the Wii was released a part of the fanbase requested a Castlevania game that allowed you to use the Wii remote as a whip. Being the nice guy he is, Igarashi decided to make it happen, but after going over the whipping gameplay motions with the Wii remote he quickly learned that a game with extended play sessions was physically not doable for players. He then looked at what type of game the whipping motion gameplay could be used in and be played in short periods, and the awnser he came to was fighting games. Thus Castlevania Judgment was born. As it usually goes with these type of games, in hindsight it would have been better to can the idea of making a Castlevania game that made use of the Wii remote as a whip when they couldn't make the Castlevania game they wanted to make and the fanbase expected to see, instead of pushing it through to fulfill the requests of the fanbase.

Some of the greatest fighting games of all time had less than 20 characters in its roster so making it a talking point instead of just acknowledging that it could've been better would have made it a better criticism.

But, it has amazing music, the characters play pretty differently, and the subweapon mechanic and high DPS nature of matches makes playing this against a player a tense experience, and the fast pace makes it fun to watch. Or, maybe I'm another just Golem main, and nobody in another fighting game quite plays like him, so I'm biased. *shrug*

      @StrykerMagnum I didn't know about balance issues or anything, I just played the game. I'm a Simon main, and it was just fun to play the game. I think the only characters that gave me any trouble was probably Dracula, fittingly enough, and Cornell. I never played it online, but I have suspicion where it would've been just people spamming attacks from afar, given the structure of the arenas. I wouldn't mind another attempt at making a fighting game for Castlevania, be it like Soul Caliber 2 or Power Stone. Hell I'd love to see that happen.

    • @StrykerMagnum
      @StrykerMagnum Рік тому +1

      @@MrTaikobo A few characters had ridiculous projectile spam, and Dracula's super armor (attacks can't be interrupted) were the major balance problems in PvP, but some tweaking of that and the controls would make it a strong sequel as a more focused 1v1 fighter, but I'd be happy with a Power Stone 4 for all, too. I actually still bust it out at parties a lot, the imbalanced roster ironically being what makes it such a fun group activity- a set of 3 usually takes around 2 minutes, and people are always doing crazy combos and busting out supers like mad! As a competitive fighting game, it's kind of a miss, but I to do this day find the game fun af, and it's always a crowd pleaser, so can it *really* be that bad of a game? I say, no!

      @MrTaikobo Рік тому +1

      @StrykerMagnum Oh, so that's why Dracula gave me shit! Okay, I didn't know he had super armor. That's nasty. Then again, I think he needs it, given how slow he is.
      Here's the thing: Arena fighting games like Saint Seiya Brave Soldiers are improperly balanced because they favor projectiles so much. Someone like Shanoa or even Eric, if standing at a certain distance, can out poke you at range. If you're going to do an arena style fighting game, I'd say make the projectiles only be on screen one at a time and have higher recovery frames. These forces said players to think about spacing and tactics instead of just mindless spamming. In games like Soul Calibur, you're often in close combat or in neutral, depending on your style. If this was a 2d game like Street Fighter, then zoning or turtle style play can be a viable option. It'll be frustrating as hell for the opponent, but it can work.

    • @StrykerMagnum
      @StrykerMagnum Рік тому +1

      @@MrTaikobo Yeah, old Drac plays line Ganondorf in Smash, he gets super armor on a lot of moves, and deals big damage, so he punishes easily. I agree on the projectile limit, but I think just having them have higher recovery frames is a good solution overall, Shoot Style Deku in the My Hero Academia fighter is real cheesy, and Dabi and Himiko also have some super spamable projectiles. That said Id like to see a Castlevania Judgement 2 play a lot like the MHA game, its an arena fighter with a lot of moving and dodging built into the flow of fights, it feels really good to play. Also, I think a big improvement would be having sub weapon and heart containing destructibles have huge hitboxes instead of your character locking onto to them to destroy them, that alone would make Judgement feel a lot better to play.

    Some corrections. I assume you don't play many fighting games but castlevania isn't what you consider a 3d fighter. It's an arena fighter. You can roam a wide arena, 3d fighters are still looked between a 2d space when fighting, the 3d elements come with side stepping, not what you see in castelvania. It has no similarities with soul caliber or tekken. The games it shares similarities with are other arena fighters, like power stone, inuyasha feudal combat, zatch bell mamodo fury, or budokai tenkaichi 3 just to name a few.
    Also 14 playable characters for a new fighting game is not bad. Bringing up Mortal Kombat was a bad example, due to the fact that deception is a sequel to another game, and its not neatherelams first fighting game so they have the liberty of adding more characters overtime. Castlevania judgement is a new fighting game so the small roster works because more characters can get flushed out and feel unique.
