GLOSSARY:
Takahagi and Hitachi: citeis in Ibaraki prefecture.
NTT: Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, a major Japanese Telecommunications company headquartered in Tokyo.
Iwaizumi: It technically is Hiraizumi in Iwate prefecture, which is know for a well preserved group of various temples and gardens, achieved UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011.
Disaster affected areas: Tohoku region was severely affected by the North East Great Earthquake and following devastating tsunami in March 2011.
Yubatake : literally means “hot water field,” which is often located at Onsen facilities to control the temperature of hot water as well as to produce Yunohona. Kusatsu Onsen resort has a huge Yubataka right in the center of the resort.
Yunohana: literally means “flower of hot spring.” It’s also called “sinter,” which is mineral encrustations left by hot springs.

It is not because of the air pollution nor the radiation leak. Japanese people wear them for multiple purposes: health, warmth, fashion, and beauty. In a nutshell, wearing surgical masks is part of Japanese culture. I know it's bizarre, but please don't get weirded out. 地域によってさまざまな方言がありますからね。「歩って(あるって)」は東北南部や関東の地域でたまに使われる表現でしょうか。そのまま漢字の通り「歩く」という意味ですね。

Alexandra Buyck It is considered polite and standard practice to wear a mask when you're sick to prevent the sickness from spreading.
also, to get themselves warm. Surgical masks really comes to help when the freezing winter wind is gushing everywhere. People here does that a lot. Or, in some cases, to feel safe(privacy thingy).

It's not about being culturally sensitive. Some cultures and traditions are just worse than others, get over it. Namely the "culture" of accepting mass slaughter of animals when we don't need to eat all that meat is an inferior culture.

Well, regardless of what they do in Japan, it is a fact that a mass-slaughter of animals is happening. Thus eating Shark fins is not sustainable. Who cares where it is.
You say that I'm the arrogant one? Am I arrogant for not believing that humans should enslave and slaughter animals on a ridiculous scale? Causing mass extinctions? Depriving the seas from fish and corals? For not thinking humans are worth more than other animals? This is what's arrogant in your view?
