David, we always enjoy a good running easy to tune engine.

10 minutes with the baking soda blaster and it would look darned near brand new! Nice engine!

I'm not sure what model Irvine engine it is either, David. What I can say about the history is that I had that engine on a Hangar 9 Easy Fly 40 to teach my young kids to fly, they were in their teens. I could never get either of the 2 of them interested in the hobby. They are 39 and 43 today. The Easy Fly is on my workbench right now undergoing a complete "overhaul" and recovering. The plane (with the engine still mounted) has been in the attic for 25 years or more, along with several other planes. This was the plane in the worst shape. It is quite remarkable to see it swinging a 10 X 6 @ 12K + today. I intend to put a used OS FS40 on the trainer, an engine I got from one of the guys in my club for $20- a steal. It runs well, but should have new bearings which I just got from your bearing guy. Watching the Irvine 40 run in this video makes me wonder if I should have taken the time to get it running again for this particular plane, but I am very happy that you have it now to showcase for our small but dedicated UA-cam community. The Easy Fly should be just fine with the four-stroke, my preferred engine type. Keep up the great work and interesting videos, David. florida_floyd (that has been my moniker for years- just not on UA-cam)

WOW! Thank you for the history of this engine. So this engine has been in an attic for 25+ years. It reminds me of an OS FS-61 I had a few years ago. Videos of it on this channel. It looked like it had spent time underwater, but yet the inside was brand new.

Thanks for sharing it, David. I own a very similar one. Almost sure it's a Sport RC MK.II, manufactured at mid/late 80s. There were at least 3 versions under that same model name, combining long or short boost chamber, and plastic or aluminum carb. Sturdy and reliable.

There is nothing like taking an engine apart, restoring it, and putting it back to life like you did with the cox .049. I do the same restoring antique radios and fans and engines. What a rewarding and personal hobby!!

I wouldn't even THINK about touching it cosmetically. IT runs flawlessly now. I'd just bolt it on an airplane and fly the hell out of it looking right as it is.

It runs excellent. You wouldn't expect such a good running engine looking at the outer appearance it came to you. A nice surprise

My own experience with Irvine is decent power, decent fuel consumption, and bullet-proof reliability. Probably the easiest starting and tuning engine I've ever had. Thanks for the video!

That runs really well. I have been flying for over 15 years and have only recently bought a few planes with Irvine's in and they run really well really impressed with the performance of them wish I had some sooner 👍 yours runs really sweet David 👌

Really good run, that composite carb looks something like the same type of composite used on Perry carbs, maybe cerakote silver paint would make this engine look as good as it runs

It would be the perfect engine for a Halloween themed plane.
Try the soap powder on the muffler to see how it works. Corrosion might be tough.
Another glow engine brought back to life.

Hey David this looks identical to my very old Irvine .40; it must be ringed. Still, rather well running thing, didn't expect that, wrongly judging from its outside appearance! :) Same engine in following video from '99 in my 30+ year old Flair Cub, David (I am not flying there, I was nearly 11 years old back then):
