      @@jessieharris5242 Hey jesse! Yes! I got married during the end of my 2nd year of PT school. I can spend so many hours talking about this aspect of PT vs relationships. but my biggest advice: make boundaries so when you're supposed to spend quality time with your significant other, make sure its 100% devoted to that. And when its time to study, make sure your time is 100% committed to that. If you mix the two, it can be difficult and stressful in the relationship and also your academics. Are there specific questions you were trying to ask? I could make a video on this!!

    Starting my first semester of PT school next month! So excited. For those of u looking to go into this field i strongly suggest getting a job as a rehab tech (it exposed me to so much plus u make connections with PT’s). Take the extra step if u are serious about your future like becoming CPR certified, joining groups associated with your major in college etc. It looks great on your PT application. & also SAVE!! Applying to PT school can be pretty pricey. Oh & volunteer as soon as possible to make sure this is actually the occupation for u!

    Hey Mr. Drop it where it's low, I am very interested in receiving a PTA degree, the only reason why and assistant physical therapy is cause I hear the assistants get to work more with the patient who is injured or needs to recover as best he/she is capable of. I have a TBI, long story won't blow up this comment however I am far from getting into a physical therapy school, I currently am wanting to achieve an AA then move towards a PT school. However, I really appreciate all these videos you'll be sharing with us all. =) Thank you Nick Schagerer

      Hey Nick! Thanks for dropping by. Thank you for sharing your history with your TBI. I hope you have the resources to help you be successful!
      Regarding your interest in PTA - sometimes PTA's will spend more follow up sessions with patients, only because a PT is able to perform first-time evaluations (PTA are not able to do that). So in a business perspective, its worth it to have PT do evaluations, and PTA for follow ups. You get what im saying? On the other hand, this system is not everywhere. Some clinics are like that and other clinics have it set up differently (like a clinic will only have PTs and not a single PTA). Just depends on where you go.
      How far are you from getting your AA?

      I agree that it is more common to have pts go down the outpatient route, but that doesn’t mean that is the only way! I think when most people think of PT, they think of the outpatient setting, which may bias most people down that road. But in school, you learn all the different fields that are possibilities you can enter into (like I listed in my video)

Thank you for making it, my only criticism to this video would be that some of the points get addressed a couple of times and could use a bit more concrete of an explanation, however this is still a really good video. Maybe a more specific script could help you in the future. Keep up the good work this kind of content is really helpful to someone like me so I am now a subscriber. 😃

    Hey I’m applying to DPT next fall (assuming I get accepted). Just wondering how do your weekends look with the program? Are you studying like all day/night and wake up early to get ahead like medical school or do you have time to hangout with like friends,relax and do things I might enjoy in undergrad on my weekends? Thank you for the very informative video tho!!!

      Josh Falbo hey josh congrats on getting ready to apply! You’re almost set and ready!!! That’s a great question man. I actually made a short video on that topic (can you have fun in DPT school? ua-cam.com/video/aLXlwh-EiYA/v-deo.html) but honestly it depends on how you study and how you prioritize things. Dpt school is forsure difficult and demanda a lot from you. But if you’re able to manage your time where you’re not wasting it with Netflix or unproductive things, then yeah you’ll have a lot of time! I was able to really nail that skill throughout dpt school, which is why I was able to still work part time, hangout with my fiancé during every weekend, and never miss a week of working out. But of course everything had its sacrifices too. Since I was prioritizing those things, I didn’t have too much time to hangout every time my classmates did something. I mean I wasn’t a lone wolf, but I wasn’t at every social gathering either. It’s the path that I chose and decided what to prioritize. Do you prioritize social gatherings? Exercise? Traveling? Your relationship? Things to consider!

      Priyanka Midha psychology has to do with the brain, particularly the psyche (which by definitely pertains to the human soul, mind, spirit). In physical therapy it has to do with the brain, but more in the aspect of connecting different functions of the brain and which body parts they connect to. hope that helps!!

Even after I got married, I lived close to campus. There are students that live 40+ miles away and still manage to be successful, but..... they dont seem to exercise daily. I think since my commute time is short, I am able to utilize that time to get my lifts in, so that really helps! But it is honestly whatever you're able to fit into your schedule. Whats up Abby, thanks for dropping in! I remember I was in a similar situation too. Honestly, yes, those are more common majors, but I really believe the concepts you'll learn in ES or Kin, are going to help excel you in your DPT career. Especially if you apply the knowledge with internships/work. If you're passionate about ES, i would go for it. I dont think having a different major will help you out too much. I mean it does help you stand out a little more, but I wouldnt bank on it for a guarantee in for PT school. My advise: pursue an education that you are interested in. For example, learning to listen in on red flag questions and the process of referring out. Or paying attention to techniques like joint mobilizations, therex, muscle energy technique, etc but these are all things you learned in school too no?

    What's your opinion on becoming a PT at say age 48 to graduate? Was there anyone in your class that was in there late 30s and early 40s? Can I work into my 60s or would it be hard? What can I do to increase my chances of getting into a program? Example if I was to take some cert in biomechanics from ACE , volunteer, extra shadowing, taking a physical therapy aide course , exercise physiology, nutrition , human movement, pilates?

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt 4 роки тому +1

      hey Jeff!! Great questions!!!!! So the oldest age we had in our program was early 30's. If you look at the link in this video on the PTCAS sata report (ua-cam.com/video/i_ImLMjK2RY/v-deo.html) you'll find the statistics on age and gender. I believe for 35+ it was about 1.5% of all applicants, while the majority were ages 20-25. I know PT's that are in their 60's that are working and they love it, but there is also a saying that PT's retire early because their hands (especially thumbs) start to go out of commission because of heavy manual therapy. HOWEVER, there are still effective ways to treat without being so hard on your hands - as long as you have early awareness and early prevention, I'm sure things will turn out good!
      As far as increasing your changes, focusing on your GPA would be the first priority (VIDEO ON GPA: ua-cam.com/video/HD3xFKHMv7E/v-deo.html). Then after, you need to find strategies to stand out among other applicants (HOW TO STAND OUT: ua-cam.com/video/pkq9rtoA_xc/v-deo.html). There are some courses that will for sure help you a bit more, like exercise physiology, nutrition, etc but I would not bank on those courses to get you accepted

      @drjustinleedpt 5 років тому

      Christian Calderon that’s a legit thought Christian. I see you at where you are at in your age and I know this next course in life has to be the right one. I think you should ask yourself if PT is something you would want to pursue for the rest of your life. However, as much as I would want you to get into this profession, it’s honestly a lot of money for school. Even if you go to a public school like cal state Long Beach or northridge, it’s still pricey and you’re looking at about 100k in debt. That’s a lot of mooooola. So you should consider that.
      Not to mention the pre-reqs you will have to take. We have different and unrelated majors in the program too like business and biology. So it doesn’t matter what your undergrad is, as long as you have the right pre-reqs and a good gpa.
      I would recommend thinking about these things and then doing some more research h on how you can get accepted into dpt school in the quickest way. Watch this video, it may help you out! ua-cam.com/video/9zAhsxC2eug/v-deo.html

I'm wondering if PT is really the next step for me because I really want to mesh the two together. In PT school you learn so much about human movement and how bad movement can affect pathology later on. So if you’re trying to prevent injury and go down that route, PT will give you a huge advantage. But weigh out the costs too you know?

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt 4 роки тому +1

      Hey hey hey! Thanks for asking this and requesting the video. I’ll definitely make a video on this to explain more. but to answer you question now, you learn to build the academic stamina as you progress in school. You were accepted because you’ve proven your academic grit. Now dpt school is taking it to the next level - and for the most part, you will be able to rise to the occasion. Take it one day at a time.
      Everyone has their own way of studying. I would suggest trying out different methods and see what works best for you. For example, many students record lecture and re-listen to it as they review their notes. I tried this once and I did not work well for me. Other students like to study in groups, or by themselves. Some like flash cards and others like drawing. There are many ways!! I would definitely recommend trying to navigate through it all and see what is most effective for you. And once you find that, stick with it!! Even when it gets hard and more rigorous, stay persistent with what works. If you studied a particular way and that yielded good results, then you should keep that method, ya know? If it works, then why change it.

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt 4 роки тому +1

      Aharon Garrel I think a gap year is absolutely a great idea. Sometimes students get into school without a break from undergrad and it could increase their chances of burning out. I also think there is a level of maturity that needs to be in place prior to getting into dpt school (for better success, learning maturity, discipline, and more). I also am a believer of that too because personally I took a break from school from 18-22 years old. And it wasn’t until then when I knew I wanted to do PT. if it wasn’t for that break, I wouldn’t have known/been so passionate about it!

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt 4 роки тому +2

      What's up Kevin! Bro, im nothing but honest here! No BS in any way, unless BS refers to bachelors in science! lol... k that was dumb. Anyway, the pay when you work as a PT isnt the best. Starting off you get about 75-80k, but you can work your way up to 100k+ - of course it depends on where/what setting you're working at. Some locations like hospital (kaiser) or settings (inpatient/Skilled nursing facility, etc) will offer you more. Its actually kinda funny because on the first day of my DPT school, my professor said that the investment you put into DPT school isnt the most profitable. But you're here because you're in it to help others and you have a love for others, rather than for the money. So there is that....
      HOWEVER, there are many ways you could make additional income to get you over 100k+. especailly considering your background, you could always offer additional services to your private clients or create online programming for powerlifting/tae kwon do, or even do personal training on the side - all of which i have been doing throughout DPT school (helped me create some income and still had flexibility to be a student). It all honestly depends on how you want to approach it.
      i like your passion man and like your drive to attaining big goals. Thats going to take you really far! Keep on going my man!!! I have no doubt that you're going to make 100k. if you want, we could brainstorm more. Of course, im bias, but learning kinesiology as my undergrad not only thrusted my learning in DPT school, but it even helped my gym workouts too. knowledge is power bro.
      Hope this helped!

      I think ATC, is a great profession, but I don’t think they have enough education from school to proper rehab someone, although they say they can. I believe they are effective with acute injuries and the ability to return an athlete to sport from an acute injury, but not from a chronic or more long term injury. However, if they have the proper experience and additional eduction, they could also be great at rehab - I know some ATCs who are great. • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt 4 роки тому +3

      Hey Chris!! Thanks for commenting and dropping by,
      Typically, most DPT programs will consider your application if you meet the minimum requirements, which includes a 3.0 GPA. So my best guess is that if you're below a 3.0, your chances might be a bit harder to get considered. I would recommend trying to make up/retake courses that are bringing down your GPA. Ultimately, the schools want to know if you're able to handle a doctorate academic load - and your GPA is the best predictor of that. You know what Im saying? Doesnt mean its a lost cause, but it might be a good idea to boost up that GPA.
      To answre your other question, I think it's great that you have a non-science major! Make your unique and versatile. If you're able to take the pre-reqs and perform well in them (pre-req GPA), then i think it puts you at an advantage. That being said, do not hope to use your non-science major as the biggest leverage you have to get into DPT school. The overall and pre-req GPA are going to be weighed the most.
      Personally, I do not regret my undergrad kinesiology major, but I do wish I took another non-science major/minor like communication or spanish! Lots of spanish speakers in CA haha
      Let me know if that that helps! Shoot more questions if you got em (:

      BlazePlays you can’t work as a pta during dpt school because you need a special license for that. Other students have worked several jobs like waiter/waitress, Trader Joe’s, fitness coach, university jobs, etc. As you know I worked as a personal trainer and group fitness coach and it was do-able!

      Glendale!! That’s not too far out. You know you could ask to sit in at APU’s classes to see if it’s a good fit for you. I would highly recommend you do this.
      And no problem! Happy to help and listen!! Any specific questions you want answered regarding pt internship?

    • @JoannWu
      @JoannWu 5 років тому +1

      I’m actually at Fyzical in Maryland. I recently started there. So, I would like to know what the most important part of a pt internship is such as patient interaction, the exercises/stretches, etc. Also, what questions should I be asking to get the most out of my time especially since my internship is unpaid. Thanks!

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt 5 років тому +1

      Joann Wu oh shoot! Well hello to Maryland! You’re way on the other side of the country.
      Those are are solid questions man. I will definitely be doing a video to help you understand more. I think it will help clarify some things and give structure to what you’re observing! But overall, great job on taking initiative to be focused on your future.
      Also, my best advise would be to understand therapeutic exercise. 1. What is the point of selecting this specific exercise? 2. What is the exercise doing (stretching, strengthening, joint mobility, etc)? 3. How does that help the patient. Those three questions are good to ask your PT when you have a chance. Start there and let me know!!
      Thanks for your input!

    Pta to dpt? Currently finishing my bachelors and i hate how I’m only an AA degree as a pta

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt 4 роки тому

      There are a lot of bridge programs that you could do!! Its like a double edged sword you know? you're only required an AA for PTA, which makes the schooling short, but...... its not exactly a bachelors or more than that. Schooling is a lot fot a DPT, but its WELL WORTH IT in my opinion

    Do you have to be a social person to be a physical therapist

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt 4 роки тому

      You don't necessarily HAVE to a social person to be a PT, but it definitely helps. The profession revolves around interacting with other humans every single day. You can be skilled in your clinical reasoning and manual therapy, but I believe that the social connection with your patients will be invaluable to your practice. Ive seen PT's that are not exactly social among co-workers, but they are able to talk with patients and make them feel comfortable.
      So all in all, you dont have to be a social person to be a PT. But it helps tremendously. If you have trouble in this area, I would highly suggest practicing social skills/communication skills right now so that you have this asset under your belt as you graduate DPT school
      Hope this helped!
