      possibly.. some students have that figured out, and some do not. but that doesnt mean you cant switch paths after you put down a couple years. Maybe students in DPT school start when they are 25-ish, meaning they all took time to figure it out too, including changing majors

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  5 років тому +23

      Hey Cody! Thanks for dropping by. I think it depends on what you’re looking for and what you’re willing to commit. PTA route is much much less commitment than the DPT route. Not to mention the prerequisites and tuition on top of it all...
      I was on the path trying to choose between the two before I started school too and I got convinced that DPT is going to be better long term because of the credibility and stability. It’s harder of course, but the benefits are much better!!
      However, people who went through PTA route also enjoyed their time and loved their education too. But you have to understand that you will ALWAYS be under the DPT’s supervision and you won’t be able to really treat beyond your scope of practice (which is basically what the DPT says).
      I was thinking about making a video on PTA. would that interest you?

      Mohammad Ibrahim thank you! Glad you liked it. Well if you went straight into dpt school after undergrad (considering you take 4 years to graduate), then you would finish everything when you turn 24ish. Let’s do the math:
      18-21 years = undergrad
      21-24 year = dpt
      But also consider the break between undergrad and dpt, also consider maybe taking a year to finish up prerequisites and GRE, etc

      Richard Onaghinor personally for me, I consider those classes to be actually fun! Physics helped me because I knew that it would be useful in the field of physical therapy, kinesiology and corrective exercise helped refine my knowledge and took me to the next level of critical thinking, and public communication with some thing I really enjoyed! • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  4 роки тому +3

      @@Ronaghinor To record your hours, just make a log of what dates and hours you're working and what setting (example: 7/7 for 5 hours at outpatient ortho). Eventually you will have to log the total hours on PTCAS and have a supervising PT verify it for you. I talk more about this on my online course - if you're wondering how start shadowing, this course is perfect for you! Teaches you the basics and insight on what to prepare for as you build your PT application. There are a lot of tips and strategies that I wish i had known when I was in your position. If you want to check it out, here is the link justin-s-school-279b.thinkific.com/courses/DPTschool
      But ti answer your extra curricular question: I would recommend participating in any healthcare-related field (paid or unpaid), volunteering for PT related events (like MS walk, special Olympics). Pretty much anything that has a purpose that you can use to show schools that you will be able to utilize skills/knowledge learned in the field of PT. You also want to show long-term commitment too.
      So for example, I was a personal trainer for 5 years when I applied. This showed that I cared for people's physical and mental well-being and that I have a great skill set to not only motivate clients to push passed their comfort zone, but to also believe in clients when they don't believe in themselves. These are important when you work as a PT.
      Hope this helps!!!

      It is something to consider definitely. If you're looking to work in a hospital, you for sure need to cover it up. But where I am working, you could have a sleeve and they wouldnt care at all! I work at a outpatient location. But in the grand scheme of things... tattoos are becoming a bigger, more common thing now. So as long as you are respectful (covering it with a sleeve, not having offensive stuff on your tats, and asking your supervisor) you should be good. Now I am sure you may get turned away from some places, but if you cover it up with a cover sleeve, I cant see how they could decline you simply from that. You know?

    Hey, I'm in the second year of my undergrad currently. I am thinking of doing pta to have a better job quicker than going straight through. My plan would be to work as a PTA while finishing my undergrad and during dpt school do you think this would be a good route?

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  5 років тому +2

      I think if you can swing it and not waste your time, I think it’s a great route! But if you feel like your capable of a DPT, then don’t settle for PTA, only because it’s quicker, you know what I’m saying? I was at that crossroad when I was deciding I wanted to get into rehab but was like “dpt school prep is too damn long...” but I really am so happy I followed through this path.
      If I had a better understanding of rehab, I feel like it would have helped me more in DPT school. So if I went the path of PTA and then transitioned to DPT, I think it would have helped me. But... idk what the length of time it will take to do both? You should break it down and come up with a plan. Then... share it with me so I could share it with others!! Haha I think it’s a great idea!
      It’s also a step up from being an PT aide. Being an aide doesn’t really teach you anything... haha just the experience of being in a clinic setting

      @@drjustinleedpt not sure as to the setting was thinking at a hospital, just a patient practice, or with athletes as I am doing athletic training and exercise science and love atheltics. At the school I'm at there is a PTA program that only would take one year for me to finish so I would postpone my undergrad for a year and complete that if I decide to do it. I'm thinking that the job of PTA will give me good experience and help with the dpt school when I get to it along with some competitive advantage as I would be in the field for some years at the time of going for the dpt. The biggest driver for me wanting to do this route would be economical and fufillment in origin. I also was thinking that the upgrade in pay( currently making 15/hr and PTA in my area makes 29$-32$/hr) would, at least hopefully, offset the debt I will eventually have to accrue in doing dpt school since I'm paying for my college. Just looking for some insight on if this would be a smart choice considering I would inevitably be putting of me becoming a dpt for a year.

      I think you got a good plan going for you and as long as you follow through with it, I think you will be successful no matter what! Most people are all talk with their plan, but no follow through.

      I’m a PTA. I went to Pima Medical Institute. They have campuses pretty much all over the country. It’s an associates degree, but they told us they expect us to know everything a PT does and that’s why it’s so fast paced. I’m looking at getting my bachelors( luckily I have a lot of credits to transfer) in Sports Science and Performance Planning with a minor in Kinesiology-Sports Psychology track. Just know you’d be taking 2 very expensive tests if you are going to do the PT thing as well. The NPTE for PTA was I think over $600 and there’s the jurisprudence. If I were you I would stay on the train and continue.

      Isaiah Lozada to get into dpt school, a particular major is NO REQUIRED. meaning you could literally be any major and still get admitted. Most people choose science based majors like bio, psych, and kinesiology because the major is more in line with the concepts, theories, etc of PT. If you want to study psych, you should and then still apply. Just know that you’re going to have to take additional classes for prerequisites since most of your major’s courses will not require the same prerequisites of dpt school (like bio, chem, physics, etc) honestly... psych is a great major to stick with for PT school, it teaches you the other aspect of the realm of PT. BUT.... psych does not teach you the concepts of human movements (like kinesiology) which would really help prepare you for the concepts of dpt school.
