- This Legendary Rock band knew that this song would be really big. So It was perplexing when it finished in 3rd place out of the four singles released from their 1981 blockbuster album Escape. I’m talking about Don’t Stop Believin’ By Journey. It was a strange song in that Steve Perry’s immaculately sung chorus doesn’t show up until the last 30 seconds of the song and Neal Schon has a blazing solo in the first 30 seconds but it’s promise would grow over the decades after it was released and when Glee wanted to cover it in their landmark episode the Neal Schon in our interview said he was pretty nervous that it would ruin the song and turn it into Mary Poppins, taking all of the Heaviness out of it. Instead it helped turn it into the biggest selling digital rock single ever. In a star studded episode including Carlos Santana, Toto, Sammy Hagar and Panic! at the Disco, we get the story from the principal band members of Journey including Co-writers Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain and current lead singer Arnel Pineda…

it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. On previous episodes we have covered Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, and Hotel California by The Eagles amongst others But today we have a star studded episode with Sammy Hagar, Carlos Santana, toto, Panic at the Disco and principal members of the rock and roll hall of fame band Journey to break down the making and meaning of the their monumental 80s anthem Don’t Stop Believin’ the biggest selling digital rock song ever.
Written by the legendary trio of founder guitarist Neal Schon, GOAT Singer Steve Perry and keyboardist Jonathan Cain, here we have an in depth look at what inspired every part of this song from the guitar solo in the first few seconds that scared the hell out of record executives to the Chorus being almost an afterthought.
How the song went from being an also ran of their massive album escape with two songs doing better to its resurgence in it’s use in the Sopranos and Glee which made Guitar Neal Schon very nervous to the way it has blown other legends away who are still in awe of the power of this incredible anthem. Get ready Streetlight people. here is the definitive story of Don’t Stop Believin now as we go into these interviews I do want to thank our sponsor Zenni eyewear the only glasses I’ll ever wear Zenni is spectacular you can’t beat the price, the quality, the features and the selection Go to Zenni.com to up your game.

The iconic voice of Steve Perry is what made Journey. One of the greatest gifts to the music industry and can never be replaced.
Thanks to Herbie Herbet!🤘❤️
I think Steve's solo work is fairly good, but definitely not at the level of Journey. Truth is, some absolutely incredible musicians have made this band what it is (and Steve's is definitely part of that!). You have to give props to Dunbar, Smith, Valory, Rollie and most certainly Schon and Caine. Caine was brilliant in the The Babys and is just a great songwriter. In reality, Journey's secret weapon has ALWAYS been Neal Schon - the guy's sense of melody and overall chops are just off the chart along with his great songwriting ability. Steve gave Journey it's "sweetness", but Neal provided the real balls to this great rock band...
No, people who do not understand music say that. Thus band was a very good musical band. They would have made it big anyway, they were a Progressive Band who were changing to get air play, as seen with their new singer, finding a singer is not that hard if you have to correct songs and lyrics.
Perry gets a lot of well deserved credit for Journey's success, but it's easy to forget that the band's musicianship was phenomenal! Nobody, not even their hashest critics, can downplay the genius of every member. Rollie, Schone, Smith, Dunbar, Valory were and are musician's musicians.
Problem is, no one makes music even close.
Nobody can replace Steve Perry.
His voice is one in a million.
Neil Schon also kicks a$$ 😀
Billion!!!
That's how voices are, "One Of A Kind!" Like Myles Goodwyn (R.I.P.) of APRIL WINE fame. Nobody, I mean NOBODY, sounded quite like Myles Goodwyn.
💯🎯
I absolutely love the mutual respect that Steve and Arnel have for each other. Both are true gentlemen with a lot of class.
I graduated from high school in 1982 & Don't Stop Believing was our class song. I have always been a fan of Journey and it always blows my mind when I hear the younger generations singing this song
Crazy, I graduated in 85’ and it was OUR class song! Shows the power of that song and message,, Don’t stop believing! Ever
Journey had an immeasurable impact on me and my life.
I've spent close to 45 years learning from this band.
Their music is timeless.
And, Steve Perry is, absolutely, without question, without any doubt, the most influential vocalist of my life.
Crazy me, but the Houston live performance was a nuclear supernova event for the song, the riffs, percussion, and VISUALS. STILL KILLS ME!
I've been a professional DeeJay for about 15 years now. It doesn't matter what age group I'm playing to, the cultural make up of the crowd matters not, when I play this everyone sings along... and the emotion of the crowd is always palpable. This song really touches people. True classic. Thanks!
You KNOW Arnel Pineda is not lying when he says how much respect he gives to Steve Perry when even Arnel refers to him as, "Mr. Perry" time stamp 14:40 ...
Then, all the past interview clips of all the other bands/singers/musicians giving credit to Journey is simply proof of the impact and timelessness of this band.
I ain't gonna lie, Adam, your interview with Toto is probably one of my all-time favorite interviews. The guys loved sitting down with you and just talking about the past, present and future with this shared love of music we all share.
This video, with all the interview clips... wow, thank you so much for this!
Very happy for Neil & Jonathan & the band, love Arnels humbleness of being in the band and he is without a doubt a huge talent, but for me Journey always was Steve
I was a sophomore or junior in high school when this album came out. I think we wore out the cassette in my car in a matter of weeks:) A couple years back I was photographing a senior prom and was absolutely awestruck to see these kids, 40 years later dancing and singing with the song at the top of their lungs. Not to mention it brought all the teachers that were there on to the dance floor(singing as well) for a monumental ending to the special night. #unforgettable
So many great songs from that year. Must have been fun.
It is amazing how well music from this era has stood the test of time, isn't it! Proms, sports events, grocery stores--it's still everywhere.
More than that is that the ORIGINAL is the one that even the kids prefer over the versions from their own generation. The probably 1st heard and liked the newer takes on the song, but they choose the Journey version as the best after hearing it. That doesn't happen with most somgs that have been covered.
Awesome to hear! ✌️ I was in jr high at this time too!
8th Grade!!!
I've been a Journey fan from when they were a 'jam' band before Steve Perry. As good as Arnel is, I just can't wrap my head around Journey without SP. What a gift was his voice!
I had never heard of Journey until a friend’s sister brought the cassette home from the US - when I heard the opening keyboard melody, I was hooked and have been a Journey fan ever since!
My daughter and I have been “singing” (butchering) it ever since she was 13…..
Arnel can hit the notes, but the vocal quality is different. Best way I can describe it is like the difference between a metal flute and a wooden one. Perry is like the wooden flute, with his slight rasp that makes his vocals seem warmer and more natural. I hope that makes sense.
Mr. Perry is the voice of Journey's sound. Arnel is a great karaoke singer and would never pay to see him.🤘
Journey is every bit as good with Arnell as it was with Perry. I saw Journey when Perry was still their singer but I've watched a lot of videos with Arnell and enjoy them just as much ! I guess we all have our opinions!
People need to o hear Perry now with Voyger. He can't hit the notes anymore.
This song hits you emotionally, physically and spiritually.
So damn powerful.
It inspires you to keep your head up and never give up.
Steve Perry knows how to sing and bring lyrics too life. .
I got to see Journey live for the first time in 2017 here in Houston. I'm 51 so I've heard "Don't Stop Believin" a million times. But when the piano started playing those familiar notes, I got goosebumps all over. Everyone in the audience was singing along.
The piano riff is very iconic.
I just commented about a documentary on Arnel Pineda that I recorded from PBS in maybe 2015 or something and, man it's the greatest Cinderella story I've heard in my 51 years and we've heard some stories at our age huh man?!
I'm in a nursing home so maybe my concert goin days are behind me but, if "Don't Stop Believin" had a message it's to never say never or give up on a dream so I just might make it yet.
Plus I'd need a wheelchair and oxygen so great seats right? Up front where you wanna be 😂
One of those songs with a high replay value right? Never gets old or feels overplayed.
I'm glad you got to check em' out live! Too cool man ✌️❤️🎸🎶🙏
Saw then on tour for the Escape album at Rupp Arena.
@@billallen1307 That’s awesome. I had a lot of friends who went to that concert. Unfortunately I did not
I was there in Houston! I danced all night to Journey's tunes! 😊😊😊😊😊
Steve owns that song live. His vocals were amazing.
Agreed! He just blows you away with his powerful voice.
Yes, it's timeless beauty lies in Steve's vocalizations.
Steve was created for that song…and that song was created for Steve! He’ll always be my fave vocalist!
No question one of the greatest touchstone songs of the 80s. For me, it instantly transports you back in time when you hear that iconic piano intro. The world stops for a moment, and you're that 13 year old kid in Junior High again for 4 minutes. An amazing song that has stood the test of time!
I wish I was born in the 80s, but I wasn’t. I have to thank the professional baker I took a class with for getting me down the right path with this amazing band.
Perfectly stated…yes!
I first saw Journey on the Escape Tour, November 1981, the day before Thanksgiving. That was a life changing night, and the biggest life affirming moment was when Steve sang Mother Father. I was in shock, and hearing that Angelic Voice resonate through the whole arena, my jaw dropped to the floor - in complete awe. I was 15. Thanksgiving Day was at our place with extended family that next day, but I spent the entire day looking for Don't Stop Believing on the radio stations. And yes, the stations were playing it on heavy rotation - like every hour. It will always be a mystery as why it wasn't a bigger hit, but it was with me, all through these many decades. I'd play as first song of the year at New Years, first song on my birthdays as well. I have no idea how my life would have been without Journey, Steve Perry, Don't Stop Believing.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Mother Father is, IMO, the most powerful song on that album.
@@Sean_Farmer probably Journeys most underrated song !
These guys made our lives better. ❤️
Without them, we wouldn’t have 80s music.
In my 50 years of listening to rock music, I’ve never seen a song spontaneously break out in a group of people more than this one. Truly a magical song!
Don’t Stop Believing is one of those songs that takes people back to a significant moment in their history! My moment with this song is sitting in a little airport bar in Kauai watching planes taking off over the ocean. I was waiting for my flight when this song came on. I thought, “I will always remember this moment when I hear this song because it just doesn’t get any better than this!”
I remember a childhood friend bringing the album Infinity to my house when it was first released and said “You’ve got to hear this band Journey.” I was blown away and immediately liked them. I bought my own copy and practically wore the grooves off playing it. The following album introduced the hit “Lovin’, Touching, Squeezing” which all the girls really loved causing us teenage boys to lose interest in the band. They lost that cool factor for a period of time. But when Escape was released my love of the band was renewed. Journey is an incredible band. I love their music.
At 50 and starting a new phase in life this song still helps me push forward. No doubt it's an anthem.
I cannot believe Journey’s 50th anniversary is next year!
They got together when I was born? Now I’m feeling old
Ditto
Same here and I'm 52 now.
MANY PRAYERSNLUV,👼👼❤️🔥❤️🔥🕊️🕊️🌹🌹💝💝💃💃🥰🥰
I didn't want to admit to myself that I've been a little depressed for awhile, this video essay really brought me to tears but cheered me up at the same time. I went to see Journey on this tour back in the day, what a great memory. Thanks Adam, this was what I needed today.
Same. I’ve had kind of a rough week at school this week. This song has empowered me to keep on living and never take it personally.
Neal Schon and Steve Perry on Mother Father is also magic. I saw them in concert and Journey are just so good. As a guitar player, Neal doesn’t get enough credit. I’m glad I got to see them in person
He’s up there with Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, etc.
Neal creates a melodic hook with his solos, and then puts tasteful licks within it. No one in rock is better at that then Neal. I also like Vito Bratta from White Lion for doing that as well.
Neal def has his own sound. I’ve always had him up there with Brian May for that reason. Guys a killer
Was a Journey fan before ‘Escape’, had every album they ever made. Am sooo thankful I was a teenager in HS the early 80’s and saw them live in concert. Steve Perry is just amazing! I refuse to see them without him; wouldn’t care if he sat on a stool and sang karaoke. Just not the same without him.
Steve Perry MADE Journey the band come alive and I saw them when they came to L.A. There Live show blew me away! Steve is the VOICE!
I will always be grateful that I was a college student in the 80’s and got to see Journey live many times. Every time I hear my high school students singing Don’t Stop Believin’, I tell them it was mine first!!!
Haha!
See what we had in the 80s??? What a time it was.....take me back Professor!!
As for Don't Stop not being as big as Open Arms and Who's Crying Now......the ballad reigned supreme back then, like it or not.
Ballads brought the girls....and the boys duly followed.....
I used to have a few Journey albums on cassette tape. I love Steve Perry's voice. This is a great tribute to one of the greatest rock bands ever. Great interviews. Thank you.
You should pick up TRACES which is Perry's newst album and he also released a Christmas CD The Season he still has it both awesome albums!
Escape is a perfect record. Period! Every single song. In 1981 I was getting ready to go to Japan for a couple of years. I was scraping all my money together. One day I’m driving down the road and “Don’t Stop Believing” came on the radio. It was obviously Journey as soon as the guitar and especially the vocal came on. I drove directly to a record store and bought it on cassette and didn’t stop listening to it. The 80’s were owned by Journey.
Song still gives me chills. Steve Perry is indeed the GOAT. Rick Beato does a “What Makes This Song Great” on it that is awesome. Thanks Prof!
Generational is the perfect one word definition of this band. They were spectacular when I saw them in 80 and 83.
TERRIFIC is my word.
Legendary comes to mind too 😋
To this day Don't Stop Believing brings tears to my eyes. It taps into the struggle that everyone faces every day and pushes you to keep going. Journey is an incredible band.
My all time favorite band, ever. Saw them at least a half dozen times as they toured around and came to SoFL. Nothing critical you could ever say about their music, their performances or even their ticket prices back in the day. You knew what you were going to get was music perfection..at times even better than the studio versions.
Yes this is an amazing song. It's a national anthem on its own. Thank you again Professor for talking about a song of my childhood.
This song is one of those songs that stick with you. That last bit, the guitar solo. Angelic.
The solo is AMAZING.
I've been listening to this group for over 40 years and still believing! Rock on Journey!
Indeed!
They were the sound of my high school and college days and still make me feel young when I hear them
I agree, every time I listen to any Journey song I am 16, young and happy again!
@@bkproz3 don't stop believing!
Journey is a timeless band, and an incredible band. As you said, Steve Perry is the GOAT singer, and Neil Schon is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Don't Stop Believin' is their magnum opus and a very inspirational song.
They are a Legendary band who will live forever in the hearts of their fans.
Agreed!
And Neil Schon is so underrated! He really is one of the greatest of all time.
No band can match Journey, and the vocals of Steve Perry are untouchable. Don't stop believing gives everyone hope and will always be an unforgettable song!
Steve Perry is one of my favorite singers. I love this album
Me too.
I love this song and the album it came from. The combo of the vocals, the instruments, and the lyrics just mesh in a way that transcends many other songs. There are young people today who listen to it and sing along with it like I did in junior high school and beyond.
I've been in love with Journey since the first time that I heard Stone In Love. What an epic coda. Neil can play guitar with the best, but his phrasing and scorching right hand stand out the most. He always seems to have a guitar in his hands. I would not be surprised if I learned that he sleeps at night with a guitar in hand. That man truly loves to play guitar. Journey is most definitely a super group. They are all top notch musicians.
I remember seeing the supporting tour of Escape and this song in particular at the LA Forum. Jonathan picked up a guitar to do the second guitar parts with Neil. Before I knew what was going on Steve was on keyboards and singing the "Stone in Love" outro parts while playing. It was pretty cool!
No question. Thanks for watching.
He is really good at what he does. Superb musician.
Stone in Love is so good to listen to with headphones. That opening guitar solo going from one ear to the other is so awesome I get goosebumps. I'm surprised this song didn't go higher in the charts or make their Greatest Hits. I always loved Don't Stop Believing too and listened to it when I needed to be inspired as a teenager in the 80's.
“One of the most underrated bands in the world”! Even though they were EXTREMELY successful in their heyday, I agree no one could imagine how successful and they became overtime! Truly a band that young people today can love and enjoy! They have a timeless appeal today!
One of the Greatest bands ever is not Underrated.
They’re in my top 10 list for Greatest Bands of All Time.

@@Paul_VanGo a spam message? To say Journey was a great band? I don’t get it! Journey WAS a great band with great songs, and I get no money for saying that!

I’ve always loved Journey..Arnel is a sweetheart but Steve Perry is my heart!!! I would never go see them in concert unless the KING Steve was there singing. I don’t believe that will ever…ever happen now. 😢
Really awesome to see the footage of fans showing their appreciation for the song. That really says a lot.
It was so sweet.
I was 16 years old and in high school in 1981 when Journey's Escape Album came out. I immediately bought the album. In their incredible career, I believe Escape is their best album and "Don't Stop Believing" is their greatest song. I was amazed that "Don'r Stop Believing" only made it to #10 on the pop charts. You listen to it today and wonder how did this incredible song not go to number one? The legend and popularity of this song has only grown over the years. It's become an iconic classic that everyone today knows and that is extremely rare.
#9. It’s baffling. I do not believe it for a second! It is an EASY #1 hit for me. I’d shave one week off of that exercise juggernaut (sorry ONJ) and give it to Journey.
Stephen...NAILED it!
Back then, radio stations had a big impact on a song's popularity. I say that had a lot to do with it.
kinda like Jesus...don'tcha "think"...He had a tremendous 'Resurgence' after a coupla millenia...but lost a growing "Following" for a Spell
Yes, this is such an inspirational rock song. Many of my pals had only heard of it thanks to Glee covering it, so I was proud to be one of the few who'd known about it beforehand, thanks to my folks!
Glee’s cover is absolute crap. I am thankful that I heard Journey sing it first.
It still plays on the radio.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 although I agree with you on that, we have to be thankful for Glee, Stranger Things, tic TOC, etc for keeping these amazing songs alive and getting the younger generations listening to good music.

lots of UA-cam channels pretend to be top-quality docu-style programs, but, this one truly is. Well done on the story of the song.
5:48 “full artistic control” gave us a timeless hit song! No label involvement allowed for greatness to emerge.
When I was 13-14 years old, I was a massive Journey fan. They sounded just as good live as they did on the "album".
Such accomplished musicians...such an accomplished vocalist that might be one of the greatest power male vocalists...and such great storytelling lyrics. That's a powerful combination.
He really is one of the greatest singers that ever lived in the history of rock music.
50 years, are you frigging kidding me! Their 50th anniversary. When did I get so old! Lol
Don’t stop Believing is and will always be one of the best rock song ever. It’s got everything, the vocals, the guitar solo and most importantly it’s got the message. How could it not be considered one of the best rock songs ever.
For me, even though the album came out in 81, I will always associate that song with the summer of 83. It was the best summer ever, it was the last carefree summer I would have, it was the summer I turned 15.
Yes there were other albums that were really big that year, but I will always pair Escape together with Def Leopards Pyromania. Those two album were always played back to back with each other, and they still are, even today.
Yes there were other albums I listen to that summer, but those were the two main ones. Whenever I play those two albums I am always transported back to Jones Falls, Ontario. My buddies and I sat at the Lochs, Jones Falls was a set of Lochs on the Rideau Canal, and watched all the boats go by. Actually it was the girls, but the boats were nice too.
We all knew that this was the year we had to grow up. We all talk about it with each other at the beginning of the summer and we all knew, going forward, school was going to get serious.
Or at least that’s what a teacher told us the week before school was out. So we were determined to make the most of it, and we did. It was an epic summer.
The eighties were the soundtrack of my life and Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing was right there on the A side. Seriously, what better song could you think of for your becoming of age year. To mark the beginning of becoming a man. Seriously “Don’t Stop Believing”, and that message is even more important today.
Escape and Pyromania, two monumental 80s albums that have stood the test of time.
We must be the same age. Saw Journey in concert and they were awesome fronted by their new singer Pineda. As good as Pineda is, I still wish I was of the age when I could have gone to a Journey concert with Perry.

I was a fan of Journey before the Escape album. It is probably their most famous, if not best, album. Neil Schon's intro on Don't Stop Believing was a master stroke, it sets the whole song up along with Cain's piano work. You don't see this type creativity or musicmanship any more these days. That is why this song, and Journey are legendary. It has stood the test of time.
Their 70s stuff is also great. Don’t Stop Believin’ has one of the best intros of any song ever.
Yep, I liked the Infinity album the best!
I really liked those first three albums; though I do love Steve Perry, Gregg Rollie was my favorite.
"You don't see this type creativity or musicmanship any more these days." Well, you do, if you look for it, but there is a lot of noise out there. Check our Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson
Journey is simply the best band ever, in my opinion. Their radio songs are massive, even today, but their deeper cuts show a huge variety of sounds and styles. They could play anything. As often as I've heard DSB since it was released, I've never once grown tired of it. It's a song like no other - vocals, bass, guitar, piano/keyboard, drums - and a hopeful, positive message.
That part in your video where people talked about how this song got them though some tough times really hit me. That is and this song is the power of music. Fantastic episode professor you did the most iconic song of the 80s justice with your channel. My first concert was Journey in 81 when this album just came out ,memories of a lifetime

They had my wife and I dancing hugging and crying with the moving lyrics, especially Don't Stop Believin and Open Arms. within a week we were back together, later bought a house and made a go of it until 1986. @@ttocseprot9010 wow, this is a great story! It is crazy how music can move us to believe and get us through tough times
Thank you Arnel for allowing generations of Journey fans to continue to enjoy live performances!
LOL…thanks Arnel for helping turn the amazing legacy of Journey into a cover band…
He ain’t no Steve Perry, but I give him a pass.
@Gus Levy, I would say, the “cover band” turned the amazing Journey legacy into an even more amazing legacy, alive and reaching 50 years and beyond. Without the “cover band” who continued keeping the legacy alive, we may not be talking as much as we do today about DSB and Journey. And many Journey fans including myself may not even know Journey.
The band is a parody of themselves now.
The asshats in the comments blow me away sometimes. Comparing Journey today to a cover band is just plain stupid. Arnel has been an excellent addition to the group. I have seen several bands from that era who also have new young singers that sound almost identical to the original singer. I have seen both Foreigner and Styx who have those new young singers. It does not make them a cover band. Just because a singer leaves a band does not make the band a "cover band." Journey was making albums before Steve Perry joined the group and they make albums with Arnel afterwards. Any good band is about the songwriters. Great songwriting creates musical magic. Journey had it before Steve Perry as well as with him.
Seriously, this song is church for so many. No dogma, just hope and inspiration. As a veteran, I'm certain it has literally saved the lives of many of my brothers & sisters in arms. Seeing Steve Perry stand up at an SF Giants NL Championship game to sing along with the crowd was special for this Bay Area kid. It is exactly the unusual structure of the song that makes it great. The piano intro makes me stop and turn it up. Neil's solo then lays the foundation of the soaring inspiration of the lyrics and vocals. The story of everyday people persisting; the indomitable human spirit. It reminds us we are all in it together.
"Don't Stop Believing" is definitely a classic with much more to it than just a pop song. It's one of those songs that you can listen to no matter what your mood is. Also, Jim Gaffigan has a great bit about it where he talks about the lines "born and raised in south Detroit. He took the midnight train going anywhere" because anywhere was better than Detroit.
When Steve Lukather and Sammy Hagar are singing your praises, you know you are doing something right.

These songs are such a big part of my childhood, every time I hear them they take me back. Now so many years later they are a part of my children’s childhoods too. They are timeless classics that hopefully will play on and on and on and on. 😊
I saw Journey in 1983. Frontiers tour. Bryan Adam's opened. Inglewood Forum, 3 of the 5 nights they played. Steve Perry put a spring in my step, a song in my heart. Every time I have seen him live he never fails to bring me joy. ❤
The first time I heard Don’t Stop Believin’ I was an instant fan. It was one of those song that you immediately realize is great and you just want to listen to it over and over again.
“The movie never ends, it goes on and on and and on…..”
Is this legitimate ☝️? Do you know I received one too but I don't know if this is not spam?
The last time I heard it was the series conclusion of The Sopranos and I was mad, so mad I don't care if I ever hear the song again.

Great to see Journey getting the love they deserve for this song! I probably commented on this before, but this song is a huge time machine song for me. Takes me right back to my junior year in high school on a snowy December night, riding in a van with a bunch of friends belting this out. Great memory and great band. They are a close #2 for me right behind Queen. Hoping to see them with Toto next year!
Neil Schon is recognized by young guitarists. I didn't get to meet my niece till she was 13. I was stoked when I found out she played guitar. I hit nirvana when she told me Neil Schon was her favorite guitarist. The kid doesn't go for the obvious. Refreshing. Good to know, someday her kids will be listening to this music too. Good music stays alive.
Wish the entire band for this AWESOME tune could have been interviewed together.
Definitely grateful to have been a teenager when these guys were on the rise.
SAMMY!!!... you said it man, Neal doesn't get the accolades he should for his talent!!! Neal SWEET touch on the guitar. Those that don't know "Beyond the Thunder!!" A much listen / buy album to experience Neal Schon to the fullest... IMO.
I heard Jonathan Cain say after the Baby's his career was going nowhere. He talked to his dad about giving up and he told Jonathan Don't Stop Believin'.
Gosh - blast from the past the Babys!
I've heard that too. A little surprised the Professor didn't really discuss that.
I ❤the Babys🤗
And that’s an amazing story! The Babys also featured John Waite (a great suggestion for Adam in the future).
@@carywiesner769 it does get a mention at 4:25
Journey and Toto in one show! Wow! Schon and Lukather ... two of the greatest guitar players of all time.
Journey was absolutely the best concert I ever attended. I had the best seats in the house which were behind the stage so I got to see the crowd and the full band as they alternated by playing for them and us. Unlike me, the audience did not get a close eye view of the drummer and piano from such a close perspective. Unforgettable.
This song still WOWS me today as it did when it first came out!
Every aspect of it is amazing!
Neal Schon is totally underated, along with Steve Smith!
DON'T STOP BELIEVING!
ABSO...
ROCKIN'...
LUTELY!!!
I think the song Don't Stop believin gives people hope they think there's no hope left. The power of the message is the feeling when you hear Steve Perry sing it like it means life or death and he's telling you too choose life and Don't Stop Believin.
It’s a spiritual connector. Amazing song.
I've nothing bad to say about this phenomenal band! That voice . . . those riffs on the guitar . . . the piano . . . such a great band!!!
Thank You for interviewing Arnel Pineda. I was a fan of his before Journey because of my time in the Philippines. I had to explain to my wife how much he sounded like Steve Perry. It was as if they outsourced Steve Perry to the Philippines. They are the most musical people in the world there. Amazing singers.
They’re EVERYTHING I could ever ask for in a band, and Steve is it’s treasure chest.
I'm so glad you included the clip of the 2005 Chicago White Sox in this video. This song was their adopted theme song during the playoffs, and I'll never forget them playing it when Scott Podsednik hit that solo HR in the bottom of the 9th of Game 2 to win it for Chicago.
You should have seen me just bounce off the wall when they won.
Thanks, Professor. I really appreciate it! I'll never forget the 2005 team, even if it was for one year, it was so unexpected and magical as a White Sox fan.
Journey has been and continues to be my number one favorite Rock band, I think Neil is underrated by the masses if not by his peers, but absolutely my favorite player, and I’ve heard a lot of them. He remains one of only a couple guitarists that I’d really like to have the chance to meet. Steve Perry will always be “The Voice” to me, that being said, Arnel is phenomenal stepping in and keeping the legacy going.
I graduated in 85 and saw Journey twice… almost made it to ROR concert and that would have been 3 times. This band, and particular this album Escape, are so intertwined in my life. At 56 my appreciation has done nothing but grown for what they created. I will, to this day, crank up the volume in the car and sing along, just like 17 year old me did oh so many years ago now. I still miss Steve at the helm on vocals. Rock on gang…. And “don’t stop believing”
This episode brought me to tears. Probably one of the best docustyle episodes you have done. Regular people talking about the healing power of this song...superstars waxing poetic on Neals technical superiority...the unforgettable piano riff...the drums...
I am glad Arnel stepped up to continue the legacy. He is to me as powerful as Steve is. This is one show Id like to see. Thanks for this one.
I love Arnel, how humble he is to be singing in Journey. Who's Crying Now is a classic live with Neal playing his solo. There shows how great he can lift a song. Don't Stop Believing is yet another classic from this band
I still think the Steve Perry era was the gold era, but Arnel is awesome too.
I saw Journey/Loveboy/Benetar about 10 years ago? He was great. Was he Steve? No, but I was amazed how well he did. More than good enough for me to focus on the song and not the singer.
Besides, without him, maybe I never would have gotten to see Journey in my lifetime, and that would suck.
@@adreanmarantz2103 exactly, great points you made here. If you see them now you aren't getting Steve Perry if you can't accept that don't go. Just go and enjoy the show. He does a great job and it isn't easy taking over from someone like Steve Perry that's for sure.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 nothing will beat when Steve was with Journey we all know that. But Arnel is doing a great job helping to keep them going
@@karlshuler1011 I agree!
Professor, Im shocked that this masterpiece didn’t do better back then. What?! Why? It reminds me of my heroes: Queen and Toto, unappreciated by the press when they were around, and definitely not what they are nowadays, because now they’re celebrated legends. “Dont stop believing” is a masterpiece! Even the drum track is genius!
Queen and Toto were unappreciated when they were around? I think you’re reaching there. Specifically in Queen’s case they were legends then and remain so today.
You have to remember this was the 80's. There are a ton of songs that should've made it to number one or had greater success, but there was just too much competition.
#9?! It easily should have been #1. No doubt.
@@quiksilver78 Agreed and Journey wasn't underappreciated either. While this song may not have done as well as they expected or wanted, Journey was a huge band with many huge hits.
Why didn't it do better?
Because it needed a newer, different audience.
We were "spoiled" by Wheel In The Sky, Lovin Touchin Squeezin/City Of The Angels, Anytime, Any Way You Want It, Feeling That Way, and Lights.
After those songs, Don't Stop Believing just seemed....not as great. A lot of us "drifted off" from Journey around then.
I saw them live in Tulsa Oklahoma back in the 80s. Thin Lizzy opened. I was a teenager and it was something I will never forget.
LOL. January of 1978. Me and a buddy were going on a road trip with limited funds. I went into a J.C. Penny intending to buy one extra 8-track for the road. I think I was working my way toward Stevie Ray Vaughan, and it was like this thing called me down to the J's. I don't have any better explanation, but I picked it up and took it to the register even though I had zero idea what was inside. My friend wasn't happy when I opened it up, but from the moment it started we were blown away. We got people to get into the car just to listen. "No, no, no... really, you gotta listen to this."
I'm glad you gave Arnel some love. I didn't think I would ever accept a replacement for Steve Perry in the band, but especially singing some of those iconic songs. But lightning really can strike twice. Nice job filling out a lot of the story behind music we already love. You actually add something to the music and my enjoyment of it. That's about the highest compliment I could pay.
Part of the appeal is that the song is so BIG! I remember when it first came out, I personally didn't think it was the best song on the album. I thought Stone in Love was a better song. I think the message of the song is so unabashedly hopeful and positive that they'll be singing it for ANOTHER fifty years! In many ways, the message transcends the song.
I applaud Neil for not ever letting his band die! Not only is Journey one of the greatest bands ever, Steve Perry is one of the best rock vocalist ever.
💯
Perry's only competition is Freddie Mercury, lead vocals of Queen. Hard Rock, that title goes to Robert Plant, IMHO
@@kirktrussell9005 Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury are legends in their own genre
I'll be turning 76 in a few weeks, and so I have seen rock music's projection from the very first, with Little Richard, through the R&B and Beatles eras, the great season with bands like Lead Zeppelin, and right up to and through the time of Journey and Boston.
"Don't Stop Believing" is one of those tunes that as soon as I hear it I stop and do nothing, close my eyes and soak it in, waiting for that driving guitar to start, and as was said; "under the vocal the band is kicking ass". I've been known to play electric broom my self and even some out right air guitar.
Don't Stop Believing" is one of rock music's greatest tunes ever. It will live on when all of us here today are long gone. I was actually choking up a bit watching this, great job Adam, ;-)
Being an 80’s baby, graduating in ‘83, Journey has always been MY band! The best concert I’ve ever seen is Journey in San Diego in 1984! “Don’t Stop Believing” has always been one of my all time favorite songs. Every time I hear it, I sing it, out of tune, at the top of my lungs! My wife of 33 years always shakes her head but sings along with me! Fast forward to 2023, my wife, son and I were on a transportation bus at DisneyWorld taking a bus load of tired folks back to our resort. Some guy pulls out his phone, turns his volume all the way up and that keyboard starts playing!! Then the guitar… Suddenly, everyone in the bus is smiling, swinging back and forth. Then Steve starts…The WHOLE BUS, old folks like us, my kid (who’s 28 and an ‘80’s music junkie), kids in their early teens, we ALL start singing! Everyone knew all the words to this song. When the chorus would start, the whole bus is screamed “Don’t Stop…Belivin’…hold on to that feel in’!” It was one of the coolest memories I think I’ll ever have and I’m 58 years old. Don’t Stop Believing… TBE!! ❤ Thanks Professor for a great video and wonderful memories!!
Journey is very high up on my rock pedestal. Genius stuff all over their catalog! Neal Schons lead breaks are legendarily beyond good.
So many classics.
As strange as it sounds, I feel like Journey is family to me, so whenever I see videos and such about Don't Stop Believing and also how FINALLY Journey is getting respect from even many naysayers in the past (Imagine how much it would have been if Perry was still there), I feel so proud of them, in the very best way. It's what they always deserved.
Don't Stop Believing came out when I was in junior high. I conned my folks into buying the cassette for my birthday and spent my time dancing and singing along with it from the start. I played it so often the tape squeaked as much as it played (its still in my collection in spite of its condition). Dont Stop has been my theme song since, and every time I hear the intro, my heart is happy. Journey is, by far, my ultimate band.
Thank you for sharing this story!
Just heard this song performed live at the stadium of fire 7-01-2023. Such a great song! Never gets old. Always lifts you up!
I am a guitar guy. People think of Journey as a vocals group, understandable as Perry was amazing. But I had Journey on repeat in the 80s and beyond because they are really a great guitar band thanks to Neal Schon. My favorite song from that album was stone in love. It is almost always on my mix play lists.
My favourite song too.
I love this band and their music so much - thanks for this.
Thank you!
Seeing Journey back in the day was one of the best gifts my dad gave me. He checked me out of school with two of my friends and didn't say anything. He had our bags and we hit the road. We drove a few hours to Charlotte, NC and we checked in to a hotel and got some food stayed up super late. The next day he said dress however you want because we're going somewhere fun. I had my crazy 80's clothes and and we pulled up to the arena and I saw Journey on outside and I started crying and freaking out. My friends were crying and we couldn't believe we were going to get to see Journey. It was my 14th birthday and one I'll never ever forget.
Now you've done it you made bawl like child. The vet, the mom in a coma. Saved by one of the greatest songs ever.
Damn you I love you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Thanks to Arnel Pineda for making it possible for Journey to tour again. He seems like a really great guy: we got our dream to see Journey for the first time, and I imagine he got more than one of his. Cheers
Journey has always been awesome. I would also recommend listening to their songs 'Troubled Child' and 'Rubicon' from the 'Frontiers' LP/CD.
Their best LP/CD may be 'Trial By Fire' which is loaded with a lot of great songs. Also, I would highly recommend checking out all of the songs
on these solo can't miss Steve Perry LP/CD's: 1) For The Love Of Strange Medicine 2) Steve Perry's Greatest Hits + Five Unreleased. Enjoy!
Oh man, the concerts in the 80's is what's brought to mind whenever a Journey tune is played today. Some good things should never change!
Journey and ToTo in the same Concert? AWESOME! Thanks for the video Professor! awesome job
the 80's was the absolute BEST Decade of Music, so happy that i grew up with it.
Journey is one of my top ten favorite Rick bands of all time!!! They deserve all their good fortune!!! They are timeless!!!
Maybe even top 3 for me.
Even a few years before Family Guy or Glee brought this song back, I remember realizing just how much its appeal stretched across demographics when I was in a car with four people all with fairly different music taste and it came on the radio and we all started singing along. Such an amazing song.
Even kids in my school get excited when they hear that piano.
Neal is the reason I started playing. His guitar sounded like a voice from the void. Awesome!
I remember being in 8th grade playing basketball in my elementary school grades 1-8 in rural Jeston, KY, being home, listening to Kasey Kasem's Top 40, and hearing the song and recording it to a cassette off the FM radio! Soon the Cheerleaders had it on cassette and were blasting the song on their Boom Box on the bus as we traveled from basketball game to basketball game!
Those were the golden days because many of us were still listening to the radio outside cities and suburbs that had cable and the premier of MTV, so all our music came through the radio, and it was a pure delight every time journey released a song, and "Don't Stop Believing" was BIG! Radio back then really was the social media platform of the day! In school, we talked about what the latest music was from Kasey Kasem's TOP 40!
