      Raikkonen is also the only driver to win races for all three of those historical teams.
      He also remains the only driver to win races in the V10, V8 and modern day V6-turbo hybrid era. If Alonso ever wins a race in F1 again this unique record will be broken. If he does this will be another record, longest time between wins. At over 10 years now it's becoming quite a long-shot statistically.

      One of the main reason three time champion Nelson Piquet never signed for Ferrari. Say what you will about him personally but he wasn't stupid. After winning his 2nd title for Brabham Piquet was apparently approached by Ferrari for a future drive but declined the offer on the basis that he preferred the news headline "Piquet wins the X Grand Prix" which he would get with any other team rather than "Ferrari wins the X Grand Prix.... (with Piquet)".
      In the case with Lewis (and had Senna finished the career with Ferrari) it ironically works the other way around. Immortal driver elevates the name of Ferrari. Fangio was an immortal legend before he drove for Ferrari. Prost was smart too. 3 titles with McLaren and the (then) most successful driver in F1 history in overall wins. His 2 seasons at Ferrari didn't sullen his worth as a driver. Not even a sabbatical in his late 30's did.

    Heard a rumour that Lewis will be getting 100 million dollars per year compared to Max at 70. Regardless, as a fairly neutral fan (all hail Nando and Lando!) having watched religously since 2005 I applaud Lewis for making the move. That being said it doesn't really bode well for Mercedes this year, the W15 hasn't even turned a wheel and Lewis is already trying to jump ship. Also I think McLaren are the team to watch over the next two years..... but alas I'm only an idiot on the internet and really am not a serious expert!!!!

    • @Bahamuttiamat
      @Bahamuttiamat 7 місяців тому +9

      The move had little to do with perceived performance but contract duration. I believe lewis sensed a growing discontent across mercedes as they pondered their future. This has been in the serious discussion stage for a lot, lot longer than anyone is making out on the Ferrari side. Yes Merc and Toto only heard about it the day before, however there was a break clause written into Lewis's contract so they knew it COULD happen. One could argue that Mercedes LET this happen. The dither and delay about Carlos's contract should have signified that something was in the works but it's so much easier to put the pieces of the puzzle together once you know where the pieces go.

    Spot on. Considering the MV/RB dominance, unlikely to go away, at least until Ford arrives, we pretty much know this will be a repeat of the Alonso, and Vettel Ferrari arventures, regardless, if Hamilton does a few seasons as they did, winning races here and there, and maybe rehearsing a championship challenge, all of us will profit. And as far as M-B goes, it is the ululating obviousness, Sains is the only available alternative, and not at all a bad one. One thing we can be absolutely sure of, is the fact Ferrari will not, under any circumstances, paint their cars black as Mercedes did.

      I also have a conspiracy theory that Red Bull is planning on entering the Hypercar class at Le Mans with the upcoming RB17 road car designed by Newey as a way to keep Verstappen on the team. I think they're worried about their golden boy getting bored and leaving so they're gonna let him race in the World Endurance Championship alongside F1 as a way to keep him in F1 (and it would be the first time in DECADES that we'll have a driver competing a full season simultaneously in endurance racing and F1). I know it sounds like a stretch but let's face it: Verstappen is a once in a generation talent; a statistical anomaly (in the best way possible) and Red Bull wants to absolutely milk that man dry (that sounded wrong but you get the idea).

If he is beaten by Charles in 2025 he can blame it on the fact that he is new to the team. If the car is not giving him a championship he can blame it on the fact that one needs time to develop the car. If the Ferrari is not getting the new engine rules right he can also have a good excuse. Any failure is covered. He earns a big pile of money, so he has made a brilliant decision. I cannot blame him.

    Alonso is available in 2025 and it would likely be his last contract in F1 before he has another crack at the Indy 500, which would give Mercedes enough time for Antonelli to be suitable to replace Fernando when he retires.
    Sainz was spending too long using the possibility of going to Audi to haggle over his new contract with Ferrari. If he was 100% up for staying at Maranello then he would have signed by now. Hamilton jumped at the chance as soon as he became aware that Sainz was stalling (pun intended).

    I think that a central point in Hamilton's change is being overlooked or ignored. 2035 will see the big exit of manufacturers from internal combustion engines. How many manufacturers will drop out in the course of this, because a large part of the main business will be lost. Who knows what will happen to Mercedes and F1. In how many other motorsport sections is Mercedes still representing itself? GT3? Where it was/is questionable for a long time whether the old model will still be upgraded or whether a new model will come at all? I think Hamiltion is just trying to secure his position with a team that will definitely not leave F1. Because F1 and Ferrari go hand in hand, or F1= Ferrari.

      Hard to say yet what will happen. Personally I don’t think the switch will happen in 2035. Not without a lot of upgrades to the existing power grid to allow more interconnection and more capacity.
      As well as lower level systems like charging stations. Which ideally will be on the same level of ease and availability of use as a normal parking place.

    Coca Cola were the naming rights sponsor for Erebus Motorsport, the team name was Coca Cola Racing by Erebus. They joined at the beginning of 2023 in a multi year deal. It ended with immediate effect on Monday :) This follows the departure of Shaw & Partners (their name covered the bonnet) and Southern Cross Truck Rentals as big name sponsors of the team. Kostecki's private sponsor - Boost Mobile (Mobile X for the US viewers) has announced they are halting discussions over the Gold Coast 500 naming rights with Supercars over the matter. Reigning champion not likely to drive for the team again and thre big sponsors leaving immediately - something is off in that team.

    Ferrari is now a product and they have to answer to the shareholders. Let's see if Lewis can pull the team around him, which means Leclerc, who's already lost in the politics, gets narced and pulls a Mclaren Alonso or they're true to form and will have him get eaten up like Alonso and Vettel. The rumours that he's supposedly bringing half of Mercedes Technical with him means it's another attempt at the Schumi dynasty.

    Many years ago (at the end of 2007) I said that 'Lewis will be the best driver since Michael Schumacher'. My interlocutor disagreed. However when I added 'He will be signed for Ferrari one day, trust me' He began to wobble in his position. So I drove the knife home adding, 'When he wins for Ferrari, you will drop your racist objection and cheer him on to more wins'. I will forever thank ITV Sport for showing us the majesty of Turkey GP2 of 2006. That was evidence. Of my anecdote, I have no evidence to back up my sagacity. The other guy died too young, and still believing Ron Dennis to be 'the biggest crook in F1'. God my mate was naive.

    As an American, I could definitely see Hamilton coming to the US to finish out his racing career once his contract with Ferrari ends given the business connections he has over here (heck he is a minority owner of the Denver Broncos of the NFL). If Hamilton were to end his career in the US, it would likely be in NASCAR instead of Indycar mainly because Indycar is facing a very uncertain future especially since Honda is threatening to destabilize the entire series by pulling out after 2026 if Indycar can't find a way to reduce operating costs. Lewis in NASCAR would be a massive jolt in terms of making NASCAR a series that is respected overseas because there are still some who think that NASCAR currently is what was portrayed in the Talladega Nights movie. I think Lewis would want to end his career in NASCAR to do something no other driver has ever done & that is be the first driver to win titles in both NASCAR & F1. Lastly there are a few teams in NASCAR (like Hendrick, Penske even 23XI with Michael Jordan's money) that could afford to pay his salary.

    About the F1 fans making drivers their own personality, this hits close to home tbh. Back in the early days of the pandemic, I was in the process of turning one of my socials into a stan account for a world renowned music artist (hint: She sang with the likes of Mac Miller, The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, and Jessie J, and was an actress with co-star Jennette McCurdy). Thankfully that never materialized, I was just totally being delusional because we were all stuck inside and had nothing else better to do. And also thanks to her obsessive fans I stopped listening to her music, totally. 💀💀 Goes on to show how problematic idolizing somebody can be lmao. And I hate to say it but making F1 drivers your personality isn't gonna solve all your problems. Trust me I've tried that and found out the hard way.

    The length of contract was the main issue, let’s be honest. Merc were keeping their options open for Kimi Antonelli, and Lewis didn’t want to risk be replaced. He wanted to take on the 2026 regs with a manufacturer team, if Merc had offered him a firm 3 year deal he’d have taken it. 🤷‍♂️

    I can't see Hamilton lasting more than 2 years as he will probably get pissed off with Ferrari's way of operating. As for Mercedes, it would make sense to wait until mid-season and decide on either Antonelli or Schumacher. Albon/Sainz, etc, would want at least 3 year contracts. If Antonelli wins F2 in that time, he will have nowhere to go.

    I think this will be good for both of them. It’ll let MB try to build back up without the insane spotlight where every weekend failing to win is a disaster and Lewis/Toto are trashing the car. As, for Hamilton, a change of scenery is always a good thing at a time like this and especially to such a different culture. He won’t be expected to win a title with what Ferrari has got now, but if they do pull off and a miracle and he wins his 8th title with Ferrari it’ll be a straight movie script.
    I also think Hamilton will be a better teammate for Leclerc. Sainz was on a sneaky mission to undermine Charles who is way too passive. I think they’ll get along really well, but hopefully they’ll end up being bitter rivals. I don’t really think Hamilton is going to be mentoring Charles in any way though.

    It still seems a bit odd. Ferrari is willing to support hamiltons projects, most of them involving electric powered cars, climate change, Racial and Gender Issues
    Ferrari on the other hand are unwilling to build electrical cars, and their newest car is a V12 SUV thats not even practical, its like Ferrari refuses to build something sensible, most of their customers are from old money or sheikhs
    All of this just feels like a personal mission of john elkann, almost like he takes personal offence in not having the best drivers of all time driving for them.
    An Italian I met in Prague told me when we discussed vettel: "Ferrari always needs the biggest champion available, the moment you come to Ferrari all other championships are worth less and it doesn't matter how good the other teams car is, it will never be a Ferrari"

    Honestly the more I think about this the more I think this an attempt to bring some credibility back to the F1 team. And Ferrari getting it's first overall win at Le Mans in almost 60 years highlighted that even more.

  • @TheZanzaroni
    @TheZanzaroni 7 місяців тому

    This seems like a dream move, but we know Ferrari, so there are inherent risks for both sides. Both are risking their reputation with this move. If Ferrari does have a good car, and Lewis is beaten by Leclerc to the title, no matter his age some questions will rise up, of course it won't hurt as much because of his age and the fact that he helped Ferrari develop a championship winner but still. If Ferrari continues on their 2nd-3rd fastest trend, Hamilton may become disillusioned, and then their break-up will be as big, if not bigger, as the news of them signing together.
    Hamilton is the most decorated driver to ever join Ferrari, they have of course put past champions in terrible situations, Vettel, Alonso, even Prost, but leaving Hamilton at the mercy of a strategy that clearly does not work, or hoping he can pull his magic to finish 3rd will clearly put them in a terrible light in the eyes of F1, Hamilton and Ferrari fans. As a long time Ferrari fan, I certainly hope that that is not the case, but I remain realistic and can see this being terrible for the both of them, if all the stars do not align.
