SCREWED EITHER WAY? Daniel Ricciardo: A Retrospective

  • Lot of noise been made at the minute about Danny Ric and his ousting from VCARB or whatever they're called now. How he's not had a proper send off simply because the fans like him and all that. But at the same time, the way they dealt with it was a bit bad. Lawson knowing for two weeks etc.
But that's F1. It's not a sport that coddles people. It's that moment from the Simpsons: "After all this time, all I get is goodbye and good luck?"
"I don't recall saying good luck"
But the point here is: Had he stayed with Red Bull or moved elsewhere, would that be Danny Ric in a hole? Because stay at Red Bull and he's Verstappen's Mark Webber. Go elsewhere and there's no competitive car. So either way he's screwed, right?
    Let's have a look.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

One thing in Danny’s favour. As jovial as he is he’s a very serious businessman and he knew how to play the game exactly as it should be played. He demanded and earned millions upon millions for every drive he took. 20 or 30 million a year plus. And he’s done that over an extended career. Good luck to him. I wish him well for the future

I just think his talent ran out and he was found wanting with the current type of cars.
And now add in his age and how Redbull runs its younger drivers.
Especially with the number of young drivers it has and what it promised...
    Thus it is goodbye, Daniel.
Could he do what Oscar Piastri has done after he replaced Daniel McLaren's F1 team?
I think Daniel would be no were near his level or should it be a points score thus they come to the right decision to replace him and with his current car, not as good as the McLaren, the hallmarks are still there he either can not drive the current cars or adapt for them.

On one hand the engine freeze has definetly made F1 feel more like a glorified spec series and less of an enginnering challenge.
On the other, it's a glaring elephant in the career of someone like Ricarrdo who never had a chance in his prime because one team had comically better engines rhan everyone else.

Ricci outshone Seb in '14 by a margin. Seb didn't adjust as easily to the hybrids. So was Ricci better than Seb? You judge, I won't touch that with a ten foot pole.

Danny Ric was flattered by a young Max who had to learn this and made some of the fanbase think he could hang with Max when it was a matter of time before he was going to start to obliterate Danny Ric
If young 19-21 year old Max was putting him through the ringer by the time it was about 2020/21 it might have been ugly scenes, not Perez bad and I think Red Bull as a result would have won the WCC but Daniel was never gonna beat Max again

  • @alexpeak16

I think there were two main reasons why Ricciardo didn't have much success at RBR; he was saddled with the useless Renault engine in his time there and it was obvious they weren't even trying to improve their power or reliability, the rise of Verstappen meant Horner/Marko were always going to put their eggs in Max's basket regardless of what Daniel did. Marko in particular was desperate to see Max be the youngest champion which of course didn't happen.
Five years at one team is a long time to wait for a title contending car (look at Alonso and Ferrari), it's unfortunate Ricciardo got to RBR as they declined and never got close to title contention until three years after he left. Baku 2018 and how Horner/Marko handled the aftermath was a big part of why he felt unwanted but I like to think he lost patience with Red Bull and their failing to give him a title challenging car. So I understand why he left RBR in the first place but I wonder if he would have fared any better if he went to Ferrari rather than McLaren for '21/'22

I seem to remember Jezza Clarkson saying Danny Ric was a future champion at one point and boy I do wish that came true! Ricciardo was my absolute favourite driver when he was with Red Bull and Renault so watching his decline at McLaren and VCARB was rough! While he probably shouldn't have left Red Bull in hindsight, I completely understand why he wanted to leave at the time. If he was championship material, there's no way he was going to do that at Red Bull when they were increasingly throwing their weight behind Verstappen. I keep saying it but I think he left Renault too quickly. He should have stuck around a bit longer considering they wanted to build the team around him and knows what that could have lead to? Maybe it wouldn't have amounted to anything, maybe it would have. Sadly we'll never know!

Ricciardo from 2014-2020 was one of the top5/top6 drivers on the grid. Yes, Max was already often quicker than him in 2017/18, but Ricciardo could still beat him and was the smarter Red Bull driver on track. I think the real turn came in the second half of 2018 and from that moment on, he would have always been the nr2 to Verstappen. Swapping teams was the only thing that made sense to do for him at the time. You don't always have to be the best driver on the grid to win a title, you just have to be faster than your teammate and at the right team. Unfortunaley this never materialized for Danny Ric, with Renault remaining a midfield team, Lando beating him at McLaren and then the new ground-effect cars coming on. However, him changing teams was still the right decision imo. Whilst he was quicker than Verstappen in 2016 and could still challenge and beat him in 2017/18, there's no way he would've beaten Max from 2019 onwoards, and Daniel knew it. So why not take a gamble and go somewhere else? I think it was the right idea, the rest was just never meant to be.

He shouldn't have left Red Bull and many drivers don't get a second chance. He wasted his third chance when he left McLaren.
A good driver ain't nothing without a good car (yeah one good performance here and there maybe if they get lucky but nothing else) and no driver gets away with too many bad decisions. Ask Alesi or more recently, ask Vettel.
It's funny cause in my personal life I usually say it's not worth it to work in a poison environment but assuming F1 on itself is a poison environment on it's entirety then go for the best team and stay there o matter how much money you get offered to leave or how much the team try to screw you over. Ask Piquet he was champion in a Williams that was clearly trying to get a British driver to win that tittle.

Careers like Danny's show that stats only tell half the story in sport, if that. If things had gone slightly differently he could have been a champion more than once by now but they didn't. Same with every driver on the grid, there's an enormous element of chance that needs to be allied to your skill. Hamilton could have ten championships by now, Alonso four... you could go on.

  • @zeroelus

I like the title of the video simply because it is indeed what I believe would have happened if that move to Renault hadn't happened, he would have been dwindling vs Max until eventually dropped, now it would have been fireworks for a while, and maybe RB wouldn't have been in a position to get the 2021 drivers championship as Checo helping Max at times was definitive and if it was tight enough DR might have still had the clout to chase another top seat when it opened, like being there at the right time to heed Ferrari's call when they looked for someone to replace Seb...but he would have left RB as the loser in that matchup, I'm pretty sure. RB do seem to favor their current golden child, it happened to Mark when Seb came, it happened to Seb when he came and DR knew it would happen to him to, though he probably had expected it to take more time, so I "get" why he did what he did in leaving to Renault...but I wonder if Renault was already starting to crumble and that's why he left for Macca, or if Renault/Alpine accelerated it's crumble because someone high profile like him jumped ship so quickly.
I do agree that while, very poorly handled from the RB side in that it was an open secret DR didn't even bother to deny, F1 is a meat grinder for careers and he wasn't owed anything for a departure, if anything these more "public" sending offs are a relative new thing in F1, and only really started to be done when someone of the stature of Schumi left, that is generational talent and multiple world champion. As likeable and talented as the Honeybadger is, he is neither.
He does have a load of money for his troubles though.

Sometimes it's sad to see someone sympatethic disappearing, but, hey, they get replaced by equally talented, or more so, younger pilots. It's what keeps things interesting, new blood, better competition and some such. Now, of course, Daniel is one of the more outstanding characters in F1, but hey, it's not his jokes or wit that will win races or keep him at the top of our list of best drivers of all time. Ricciardo understood that renault engine, because having 2 popiums with that engine its just unheard of, but everything came crashing down with the change of management and image from renault to alpine and thats why he went to mclaren, i think that ricciardo could have helped with the development and improvement of the engine and meaby having a win with theme.

Dany for me is a solid driver as sainz is but wining a championship was never on the board, his best chance to be a title contender was in 2014, but at least a win with renault as he did in monza with mclaren it would have been nice.

The way this has been handled is disgraceful. Instead of DR being allowed to graciously admit defeat and retire, after a flag-waving slowdown lap, his future was communicated in the press and he went out with a whimper and zero fanfare. Respect to the guy for not calling BS.

For me, Ricciardo showed his true colours when talking to the Red Bull team over the radio at Monaco when he lost the race due to the botched pit stop. Barking at his engineer to "Save it" when they apologised is probably something that pushed them firmly into Verstappen's corner. It's the kind of language you get away with when you are a World Champion carrying a team and they don't have better options.

I am pretty sure Daniel only won at Monza because of teams orders and Lando was told to hold station.
I highly doubt he would have won otherwise, give the overall performance of both drivers in that car.

Danny had been hot all weekend, there is nothing to suggest that Lando would have gotten by had he been allowed to challenge.
And no, I do not care "well on every other race weekend" because we are talking about that one particular weekend where he happened to better than Lando, despite Lando's whining about being "held up" (which instantly led to Danny going faster)
The only people who claim he didn't deserve the win are bitter Lando fans who can't stand the fact bottle job Norris couldn't win back then.

@@MrSniperfox29I agree Danny was generally behind Lando all year however Monza was a masterful display of control at the front from him
The fact he easily set the fastest lap on the last lap showed he had more in reserve and it was more Norris trying to orchestrate team orders to get him his first win
2021 was weird as there was a random 3 race stretch when McLaren had *genuine* race winning pace at Spa/Monza and Sochi
