You did inspire me in so many ways! Thanks fo much for sharing you knowledge
You’re very welcome. I’d love to hear what you create.
Great video! My mind is going a mile a minute thinking of all the possibilities and I don't even work with encaustic wax!!! (wish I did) Everything you showed in the video I loved. So many different directions you could take..... Stacy, keep creating and sharing, love that you are constantly changing it up.
Awe thank you. You just made my day. Also you should definitely start painting with encaustic - Cause you can never have too many artsy crafts :)
Thank you SO much for your generous sharing of all of these many ideas! I have played with beeswax & really love that texture it adds to my mixed media. I had even experimented with waxing a large leaf that I had first painted turquoise on my Gelli plate! I didn’t protect it, so it did end up breaking, but I loved that look!🎨🍁Assuming encaustic & beeswax are different?
Thanks for watching 😍 Encaustic is refined beeswax mixed with damar resin. It makes the beeswax harder. They have similarities but are different. You can buy encaustic medium and paint at an art supply store. Let me know if you end up trying it out. I love working with it.
Very helpful. Lots of ideas. I love your style and imagination..
Thank you 😍I love experimenting with different materials and working with encaustic is such a dream.
Wonderful video, so clearly explained.thankyou
Thank you for the very nice comment. Feel free to reach out if you come up with any questions.
Thankyou❤️
Hi Stacy! Just getting the supplies needed to start experimenting with encaustic and I'm so stoked! Thanks you for all of this wonderful information and sharing all your beautiful creations. New subbie here. xx
You are very welcome. Thanks for subscribing. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
@@StudioStacy Thank you! I'm sure I will have questions.
Where can I find out more about your paintings on Matboard. Thank you for sharing.
I created what I called mini explorations. All of these paintings were created on mat board . You can find the playlist here: ua-cam.com/play/PLLBS1GEG0VBnHOVtxAmCE-do4AyCi6B9g.html If you have any questions about the series or anything else feel free to reach back out. And thanks for watching 😊
Aghhh! The encaustic on cardboard! Love it. I just asked you a question in the other video about this. Could I for example with the heart in your video. Could I put yes paste on the back and then mount onto an acrylic painting??
Yes you could. I think this would work as long as you could get the Yes paste to stick to both surfaces. You could try a heavier duty glue like E6000 if the Yes paste did not work. Have fun and let me know how it turns out.
Nice video and my introduction to encaustic. I make Bitumenmonotupe-prints so far but this looks great. Any idea if I can use the beewax from a local beekeeper with pigments? will be interesting I hope with rests of the beehive in it for texture. I think I should use a torch then?
Hi. I first just wanted to thank you for the nice comment. Encaustic is refined beeswax mixed with Damar resin. The damar resin is a tree sap and makes the wax harder and more durable (when cooled) than just plain beeswax. I have never used just beeswax and I am not sure how this would work. I would recommend taking a look at this website allthingsencaustic.com/ They have some tips and tricks for beginners. The biggest thing to keep in mind with encaustic is the safety precautions. It is a wonderful medium to work with and I hope you give it a try. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
I hope you continue to do these fantastic videos! Would you consider doing workshops?
Thank you! 🙂I get this question a lot. Never say never. Right now though, I am not planning on any workshops. However, I am planning more free how to videos here on UA-cam and perhaps a few live question and answer videos. So stay tuned
@@StudioStacy your work is what I’ve been doing for a while. I live in the lakes snd mountains of Maine in a cabin in the woods and I’m always looking for bits and pieces to put in wax 🥰
@@Bridgton1 Oh Maine is such a beautiful state and a prefect place for foraging.
When I am getting started, painting with the encaustic wax that I have made from wax and resin and some paint colors- onto a cradled wood board, do I have to first coat the surface with gesso or any other medium?
You do not have to put gesso on the wood. You want to make sure the wood does not have a finish to it like a polyurethane or anything like that. Natural wood works great with encaustic. If anything you could use encaustic gesso but not acrylic gesso. Hope that helps.
HOW ABOUT USING 140 LB. OR 300 LB. HOT OR COLD PRESS 100 % COTTON WATERCOLOR PAPER? REALLY LIKED YOUR VIDEO! 🙂
Thank you for watching. Yes paper is also an option. The downside to paper is you need to mount it to something rigid. The encuastic could crack off of paper if the paper gets even slightly bent. However, lots of encuastic artists work on paper. Oh and you want to check if the paper has sizing on it. This could also affect how the wax gets absorbed into it.
I have experimented with dried flowers leaves, and thin wood slices in encaustic. Have some crochet lace to try and you’re giving me the courage!
I read that traditional gesso is not a good substrate for encaustic. Is that true? I’ve been using gesso over wood...
So glad that you were inspired by my video. I’d love to hear what you create with the crochet.
And yes, if it’s acrylic gesso you should not use it with encaustic. You can however use encaustic gesso or pure chalk paint. I know some encaustic artists make their own chalk paint or milk paint.
@@StudioStacy Thanks! 😃
One question Stacy, on minute 10:21 you show a framed painting, a thick burlap fabric mounted on a framed panel. What material do you use to glue the natural fabric to the black panel? Thank you!
So I believe I would have used yes paste. It is my go to glue/adhesive. To be honest I created this painting a few years back so I can't be 100% sure on that. I do know it is mounted onto a mat board and then framed. I could have also used E6000 but my guess is yes paste.
Hello Studio Stacy! Thank you so much for sharing your videos with the world!! they are amazing. I was wondering if I could use Akua Intaglio inks on paper and collage with them in encaustic paintings. I taste a piece of aqua printed paper in the wax and the paper. Do you think this will be an issue?
Hi - I am not familiar with these inks. You might want to look into what they are made of or if it states their makeup on the bottle. The only caution I would have is if they are made up of anything with a toxic solvent that could be harmful to you if heated up or could catch on fire if you uses a torch.
@@StudioStacy thank you!! I’ll check it’s a soy oil based ink. But I will do more research! Have a great day!
@@StudioStacy also!! Your video about substrates was so amazing. I tested on a bisque(no clear glaze) ceramic tile and it’s looking amazing. Your videos are priceless. I don’t know how you create such amazing work and do all these videos at the same time! Ahhhhhmazing!
@@zsavon Thank you that is so sweet of you to say.
I'm just starting out Stacy and I'm a little confused about the terms encaustic wax and encaustic medium so am I to understand that the encaustic wax is just clear plain beeswax and encaustic medium is beeswax mixed with damar resin is that correct?
Which one do you mix your pigment with to make colors?
I’m sorry for the confusion. When I say encaustic it is all refined beeswax mixed with damar resin. I never use just plain refined beeswax without the damar. Hope this clarifies things for you. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.
how did you imbed the natural materials it seems hard to attach waxed objects together do you have fusing tips I am having trouble connecting objects that are already coveredin wax
A few tips that seem to work for me - First heat up both surfaces. The surface you are attaching to and the object you are attaching. Second you may need to add more layers of encaustic around the object after you have it in place. Especially if it is not perfectly flat. You can always scrape away the excess paint. Work in thin layers and fuse between each layer lightly so you don't disturb the object you have in place. If it is a flat object you can go over the entire object and surface with another layer of encaustic medium and fuse really lightly. And the last tip is practice and experiment a lot. I have had many objects not work out the first time around - lots of lessons learned.
Hi there. I never heard of this encaustic before seeing this vid. I work with acrylic mixed Medio on canvas. Can I incorporate encaustic on canvas? If not can I do on cardboard then attach to canvas?
So encaustic will crack off of anything that is not rigid. It also doesn’t play real well with acrylic paint or gesso as they are more like plastic and not absorbent. You could definitely use cardboard - just know that if it bends the encaustic might crack. I have 2 series where I worked on mat board and then float mounted it to another piece of mat board and framed them in an open shadow box. Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out with any other questions. I love talking about encaustic. 😍
@@StudioStacy thanks so much. I may have to get it and play on some boards
Hi there! Did you use Yes paste to mount the cardboard?
If you are referring mounting the finished mat board pieces onto the white mat board I float mounted them with foam core board and double sided archival tape sheets. However I have used yes paste in the past to mount many pieces with. Hope that helps. If this was not what you were questioning let me know.
@@StudioStacy Thanks!
Can you put on tiles.
The tile has to be unglazed and porous. Encaustic requires a porous surface.
Any guesses why tony scherman is using cotton canvas rather than wood or even linen? Which substrate do you believe will endure longest?
Also I Heard of another artist who uses Tempera paint as their ground. Have you ever tried this?
Not all tempura paints are created equal. I found this out the hard way. So again, I would recommend doing some research. Make sure what you are using is not acrylic based. Experiment on smaller panels or inexpensive mat board. You could also try chalk paint (again make sure it is not acrylic based). Most importantly have fun and stay safe :)
@@StudioStacy you are awesome! Thank you!
