Hi this is Jay P Morgan and today on the Slanted Lens we’re reviewing a new product from Datacolor. It’s called the Spyder5PRO.
The Spyder5PRO is a monitor color calibrating software. It’s made so you can calibrate your monitor to help you get a consistent image, to know if your images are exposed correctly, and if they’re going to print correctly. This software will allow you to create a workflow that will standardize your color, standardize your exposure, so that the images you’re taking will match what you’re showing and printing.
If your going to look at your images or you’re going to share your images, either on the internet or in print, you’ve got to have some way to create a standard that will help you to know that the exposure and color you’re getting are acceptable. That they’re going to look correct, and that other people are going to view them the way that you do.
The wizard will lead you through the setup process, it makes it really easy. First you’re going to make sure the Spyder5PRO is plugged into a direct USB port on your computer. Select your computer and monitor from the list. The wizard will instruct you to place your calibration device on your desktop. This will help you understand what you need to do to work according to the brightness of your room. It’s not an ideal situation to work in a bright room. It doesn’t allow you to see your monitor the way that you should. It really should be in a darker area.
After that we’re going to put the unit on the screen. Use the cap on the unit as a counter balance to help keep it in place. Hit next and it will begin the process. First the Spyder5PRO will look at your image brightness. Then it’s going to go through a complete calibration of your monitor. It takes about 2-6 minutes to get it done.
They do have a version of the product, the Spyder5EXPRESS. It’s a little more slimmed down, it’s really made for if you just want to calibrate your monitor and do a couple things. It doesn’t tell you the brightness of the room. If you’re a professional photographer or moving in that direction spend the extra few dollars. Get into the Spyder5PRO. It really is worth it.
They have the Spyder5ELITE, which is the next step up. That lets you calibrate projectors and opens up a lot of avenues for things you can calibrate. I think the Spyder5PRO is a great product for someone who just wants to get good calibration, and be able to have a good sense that their monitor is working right. That what you see on the back of your camera is going to match your monitor.
So we’re finished. It says they recommend calibrating once a month. I think that’s a good idea. If you do it once a month your monitor will stay consistent. More importantly, you’ll get used to your calibrated monitor. Right now you’re probably looking at a monitor that’s just too bright. It’s going to affect the way you shoot. Because you’re now going to take a picture that looked great on the back of your camera, and you’re going to look at it on your computer and think it looks way too dark. You’re going to realize that the screen on your camera is probably set too bright as well. So you’re going to bring the screen on the back of your camera down, and then it will feel more comfortable when you get on your monitor. You get predictable results that way, and that’s really what you’re after. That’s what this is, helping you to refine and define your work flow.
For more information and to get your own Spyder calibrating software visit them at spyder.datacolo...
Thanks for watching. Keep those cameras rollin’ and keep on clickin’.

Actually I found this review to be quite refreshing. I like how JP talks in plain English and doesn't try to dazzle us with industry speak. How can anyone say it sounds like a sponsored video when he clearly states that you may not even need this if you are a casual user of images. Thanks JP! Fantastic job!

A very nice review, especially for someone like me who is starting to evaluate these devices (to replace one that is about 6 years old from another manufacturer) for a new iMac. However, I wanted to point out that at around 2:23 you put the calibration device on your (light colored) desktop without the lens cap attached to perform the room brightness measurement. I believe that for this measurement that you need to have the cap attached. I could be wrong, but from a Datacolor Spyder video I had watched just before yours, they instruct you to "place the closed Spyder5 device on your desk alongside your monitor..."

Other peoples monitors may not be the same as your calibrated monitor, so, they won't see it the way you see it.
But, this does help you know YOUR output is industry standard, and other photo artists with calibrated monitors will see it in a similar manner.
And most of all printing / inks will be true.

Pro tip: dont EVER use the screen of your camera for either brightness-, colour- or contrast controll! It should just be your reference frame for your composition. Everything else should be read out of the histogram and the final touches always be made on a calibrated monitor.
Either way....id still go with the Xrite Eye1 Display Pro. But thats just me.

Nice video. You mentioned you used the Spyder 5 Pro on a few monitors. Does the newest version allow you to calibrate multiple Computers as I know you have to download the software (rather then a CD) and thought it might limit how many computers you can download the calibration software to. Thanks and well done...

I was always wondering what/how these devices calibrate. Do they set up an ICC profile in your OS based on the measurements? And calibration in itself seems to be pointless to me unless you know to which standard the device will be calibrated? sRGB, Adobe RGB or other? I fully understand this tutorial is not for the advanced and it was not intended to go into the details of colour science but could you please share your thoughts or experience on this as well? Thanks. The video anyway is top notch as always.

    Hi...
Is this a goal to make screen more beautiful or to meke a colors and brightnes more realistic...if l shoot an object with low light with washed colors l want to see it exactly like this not more colorful and brighter...? thanks, Sorry about my bad english

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  5 років тому

No the goal is to make sure that your screen has the proper color settings, so when you are editing you are seeing the same colors that you would see if it was printed or if you were to use a different computer. This product doesn't change what your photos color looks like it only corrects the accuracy of what your screen is showing you.

Just remember one thing. You don't own the calibration software. If
anything happens to it you are left with a useless calibration device.
Good luck with their support dept. Like most big business, once they
have your money, forget about any help. I lost my disc somewhere in my
last move and datacolor has been no help. Why I have to register a piece
of equipment I bought with them before I can use it is beyond me.

Most people on FB, 500px or flickr do not calibrate their monitor, so if this your only concern, save some bucks and buy something else to play with :-) If you print your images, or publish them through other channels, more like in a professional way, of course color calibration is mandatory

    • @TheSlantedLens

I have has so much trouble with this device. I even paid for an upgrade to the Pro+ thinking it would get rid of the green cast it produced. Now I am tied up with customer support, sent them all the photos of the results, tried all the setting they suggested and nothing changed. They then wanted the ICC file I produced,so ,i sent them that and haven't heard back from them since.I would stay away from this mob.Better off with my older Colormunki. I had a datacolor before the colormunki ,so my experience goes back maybe 20 years.personally just use the srgb profile on your windows install and use the onboard calibraion tool in windows and then colormatch your photos by eye it will be much quicker, cheaper and save you a lot of time.

Where's the criticism? This product, for the price, doesn't do shit. It doesn't tell you how accurate your display is, in the analysis, doesn't calculate delta-E values, etc. The program also doesn't correctly identify your monitors if you're using more than one monitor. It constantly gets the profiles screwed up on my computer, and if you uninstall Spyder5Pro, the profiles don't work with Windows's ICC profile framework.
Not only that, the program doesn't even bother to analyze your display for potential problems with contrast being too bright or too dark. This program is a really unfinished product.

This is 2017 so this video is no longer true. Actually, it was not true in the beginning. I think the industry was just looking for a new product to sell us.
Your monitor is your monitor. It would be nice to calibrate, but the truth is... There is no standard. Everyone's monitor is different so all the colors will be different.
Buuuuuuuuut here is the kicker.... My initial thought is that I would need this for photographic printing. Buuuuut guess what?! You do not even need this product for printing... Canon has a feature in their plugin that once you print, you can make your calibrations from there... How cool is that? lol....
    Gotta love technology....

mnash3 - what you've said is absolutely not correct. There are industry standards. When you work on an image in Photoshop, you can embed a profile too (typically Adobe RGB). Perhaps you don't know much about photography...

Hi there. I asked Datacolor and this is what they said. He's talking about the new Spyder5, and they are having a great introductory sale on that. You can save $100 off the bundle price here - bit.ly/2bcVOKZ
"Spyder5 display calibrators do work on curved displays. Ideally, the sensor should sit flush on the display but without a curved sensor this is not possible on a curved screen. Part of the redesign of the sensor from Spyder4 to Spyder5 was an update to the Spyder5 sensor unit itself and the honeycomb area on the back of the sensor to allow for it to take accurate measurements when the sensor does not sit completely flush on the screen. Functionally, it is able to block stray light when not completely flush to the display surface. If you are going to calibrate a curved display use the standard procedure for calibration. It is recommended to calibration in a darkened room or use a monitor hood for best results."
