In photography it is essential to have your computers display color calibrated to ensure your exposures are properly retouched before sending off to the client or printing. In this video tutorial I show you how easy it is to use the Datacolor Spyder 5 to calibrate you monitor. Grab the Datacolor Spyder 5 here: amzn.to/2hR4eHL #photography #datacolor #spyder5
Thank You, Spyder's tutorial should be this easy to understand. Thanks. How do the adjustments get made. Via the video card on the computer or more so does it do via the software. I don't think it's adjusting the monitor itself. Either way. Thank You very much. Excellent. I also have the same monitor as you. My first try to calibrate the brightness got very dark and I lost all the colors and clarity. The reason being is because the Spyder tutorial it seems like they want you to test you room light while the unit in on the actual desk and not the screen. I see now how you did it and I'm gong to try again and hopefully the brightness with be fixed.
I've had the Spyder 5 Pro for about 3 years. Each time I use it it makes my monitor color look yellow unless I use it with DisplayCal, then its perfect. I just purchased the $2,000 BenQ sw321C a few days ago and used the Datacolor Spyder5 pro colorimeter and the results are the same. Yellow cast all over screen. Im fed up.. just bought X1 Display Pro Plus. Hopefully I get better results.
My recent curved display has been giving me issues also. Making the display obviously too warm/yellow even to a color blind person. I have a new Viewsonic 10bit IPS display arriving next week. Hopefully it doesnt have the yellowing issue as well. I have not yet figured out why some panels the datacolor spyder turns to yellow. I assumed it was becuase my recent panel was curved. But I am not yet sure. Subscribe and check back as if I am still having issues I will be letting people know in my upcoming review of the Viewsonic display I purchased.
Hi Sir. I love your explanations very clear the one thing that I want to ask for your help is to fix my problem with this because the "update" button along with the "target" is not appearing on the above right side therefore I couldn't update it while I am adjusting the brightness. Please help me
Ok, this is 6 years old, but Spyder 5 is still around and I would love to know if Spyder 5 calibration only calibrates the display or it actually created a profile that you can use to print? For example, let's say your printer is printing too dark, you cant fix it by simply reducing the brightness of the monitor, you need a profile that you can select for printing. Will you get this here or no?
I use the X rite colormunki display calibration system which essentially works the same as the software you are using. It has made a major improvement to my display which was ( by default) too bright and bias towards blue. My photos are now consistent and given I use X rite's color checker passport to ensure correct colour reproduction at the point of capture it makes sense to ensure my monitor is likewise calibrated to make post editing colour correct every time. Of course calibrating your monitor also ensures your prints will appear as they did on screen ( assuming the printer is also colour calibrated too of course). In my opinion if you have any aspirations towards professional photography then screen calibration is an essential tool :-D
Exactly Dunny. I could not agree more. I often get asked which one to buy. I just say get the one you like and stick with that brand for all your needs. IMHO they both work very well. I plan to get a Canon Prograf 1000 sometime next year to start printing my own prints. Going to have to get the SpyderPrint next.. LOL its expensive..
Joe's Photo & Video Channel Yeah calibration tools can get quite expensive once you include printer calibration as well. X rite offer some very expensive alternatives featuring fully comprehensive calibration which go into the $1000's, way beyond my means and frankly only for high end colour production work. My Colormunki Display only calibrates screens and projectors but is reasonably priced at around US$130. In my opinion it's enough for the majority of enthusiast/pro photographers so long as you are not making your own prints. Personally I always outsource printing services so screen calibration is plenty enough for me :-D
Another great video, Joe. I got the same unit as you, except only the Pro version of the software, back in August when it was the daily B&H Deal Zone sale one day. If I remember I think it was $89. I definitely don't regret getting it. Thanks for another really helpful video, as uual.
Thank you for the tutorial. if I am switching between screens.. .some days i used my laptop screen, some days i use my external monitor, do I have to load the saved calibration every time I switch ? or do I have to recal every time? Many thanks :)
Thank you, so I would edit the pictures after the calibration, what about my clients? I hope they don't need to calibrate theirs? Will the quality be the same in there monitor/ipads too?
There is two parts to the software. One that you use to calibrate and the other part loads at windows startup and it is used to load the icc profile to correct your display and also serves as a reminder to when you wanted to re-calibrate your display. Hope this helps.
Does anyone know if you could change the overall color temperature with the Pro or Elit software? Unfortunately, I am not able to with the Spder5Express.
At the 5:02 mark on this video, you show a white screen on which Spyder instructs you to adjust the brightness. And, simultaneously there appears at the top right of your screen both a target and current measurement of brightness (cd/m units). However, when I run my Spyder5pro calibration, Spyder neither instructs me to adjust my imac monitor brightness nor does there appear on my screen anything indicating brightness in cd/m units. I have repeated this calibration process numerous times and I have never given an option to adjust brightness. Any advice? Thanks.
Thanks for replying. Actually the option to adjust brightness and the indicator of target and current brightness did appear but only once--the first time I used Spyder. However, since then that adjustment option has never reappeared regardless of whether I was doing another full calibration or just a recalibration. All the best.
how can you get your prints to match the new colour that spyder pro 5 shows on screen, do you have to find icc. profiles. as the prints do not match on my lightroom 5
Hello Marilyn, you also have to purchase a printer calibrator. Since each type of paper and brand of ink (and combination of both) can produce different colors, saturation and contrast. You have to use a calibrator to create an ICC profile for each combination. X-rite and Datacolor both make calibrators. Here is the one from Datacolor, SpyderPrint: amzn.to/2BsbFSN Hope this helps.
If its connected to a PC it "should".. I say should as it is not changing anything on the display, but actually only changing the information sent from the computer. So it should and I see no reason it should not. But not having actually tried it myself I do not want to say for sure if it will or will not. You can always get on Amazon and if it does not work, just return it. Hope this helps.
Hello Kathleen, its fairly easy. Just have to choose the upgrade option in the software and it will carry you to Datacolor's website were you can purchase an upgraded license at a discounted price. Hope this helps.
I edit during day time as well as night time. The day time vs night time lighting is different, so do I need to have different calibration profiles for day and night or no?
They recommend it. However, I do not. I recommend just setting the lighting in your office to what ever lighting is comfortable at night (without being to dark) and just darkening down the room during the day. Or if on the go, finding a location that is dimly lit. Now it does have that monitoring sensor on the unit. But I never use that as it would be something else sitting on my desk.
Datacolor spyder5 elite Set up incomplete. Connect to the Internet.. Guys please help me to fix this problem. I thought it can install even without internet connection. My laptop is Dell corei5 windows 10
@@JoeJacksonJr thx dude. Yes I have already installed the software and calibrated my laptop. I am very happy with the result. This tutorial is very big help to me. Kudos to you Dude 😊🍸🖒

Hi Joe
You mentiond that you are using BENQ monitor? Which one exactly? I am thinking to buy one.
My BenQ died a few months ago. I have switched over to a 27" Samsung display amzn.to/2rgz9nq
Hai i have the Acer xb321hk 4k uhd monitor will the spyder 5 pro adjust the gray scale also
Yes it will adjust the gamut and color temperature to get the screen without standards. Hope this helps.
@@JoeJacksonJr is it better to use display cal software
