I screamed when I saw the notification for this, and it's not even season 2!!! This is my favorite channel, so glad you are free from restrictions again!
I had really forgotten you guys came to the series as show watchers. You feel like seasoned experts now. Gonna enjoy you’re opinions on rewatch!
What I got from Perrin's fridging his wife was that they were externalizing his book version's aversion to action because he's always afraid he's going to hurt someone accidentally. Not saying I like it, by any means, but that was my assumption. Really interesting watching this again with you guys with your full-book knowledge! :)
I agree. The largest difference between books and shows is, and must be, 'show, don't tell'. It's hard to 'show' him growing up bigger than everyone else and being mindful of his own strength. Perrin's internal struggles against wanting to help but being afraid of what he might become if he does are the core to MOST of his POV chapters for a very, very long time. That's hard to put on screen and make engaging.
Yeah, and brandon sanderson told rafe that he should have killed someone else instead of his wife like Master Luhan. Would have made the story 100% better
That's not a terrible idea IF they had done more with it. On my first watch through I saw so many instances where Perrin's character could have been built on with only minute changes
@@breezy3392
Very minor s2 show spoilers:
"But he's got a shield now, guys. He grew up"
Bleh.
@@gork8468It's entirely storytelling shorthand to explain Perrin's fear of his own strength and his ability to accidentally really hurt someone. Again with such a condensed story, you either just drop that aspect of his character, or your incorporate it into a scene already planned. It kills to birds with one stone. For me it absolutely works.
Love all the commentary as a thrice read book nerd.
Egwane was raised to the Amyrlin Seat directly from an Accepted making her the only Amyrlin in history to come from no Ajah. However, she always maintained she would have chosen Green given the choice.
What I heard about the trolllock grabbing Nynaeve instead of killing her is because they're not allowed to kill anyone who could be the dragon and in episode 3 or 4 it's kind of hinted that the darkfriends know that she might be one of the 5 candidates. In the books the trollocks also dont kill anyone in the attack, because they can't risk killing any of the boys that they suspect. Don't know if it makes sense and the show doens't make it clear that the trollocks are avoiding specific people
Eh, I kind of figured the trollocs just wanted their meat fresh.
Do we have any evidence that Trollocs actually eat people in the show?
@@gilian2587 Not sure if its stated explicitly, but they eat each other, as shown in that very scene. Be kind of odd if they were willing to devour their own but not eat humans.
@@antonbrakhage490 Are you sure that they were eating each other? Maybe they just have an eclectic fashion sense and think they'd look good wearing some of Narg's intestines?
@@antonbrakhage490 Ishamael, himself, demonstrated to the little girl that Trollocs are nice critters. It's mean to call them monsters.
Don't worry about being chatty. as a long time, multiple times reader, and someone who enjoyed the show I'm looking forward to your take on the show now that you've read the books.
I am so happy you both are back. I was looking forward to your reviews of this.
Welcome back!!!🎉
They cut the Tam rambling in the forest because it would have made it too obvious Rand was the dragon.
And because the mystery box of WHO the dragon is, was so God damned important, they couldn't afford to spend much time giving character to the Emonds Fielders, esp Rand, Mat and Perrin.
It was a manufactured mystery that hamstrung the story, in my opinion.
Complaints are often made about Amazon only giving 8 episodes for each season. And it's true. It's not enough.
But when showrunners squander the time they DO have on pointless stuff (pointless at this point in the story, anyway. Character should be king here) then they don't have much of a leg to stand on.
More time doesn't negate their bad use of the time they DID have
Really looking forward to this series. Seeing how y'alls' perspective has shifted over the last couple years has been a treat, so just wanted to say thanks again!
16:45 (Two Rivers clothing)
Weren't fortunes made in the dye industry?
How many dye traders made their way to the Two Rivers, i wonder?
Honestly, this is what post-"Red Eagle" Two Rivers seemed like to me, reading it.
19:30 (Listening to the Wind)
Nynaeve's sense does return a few times, mainly as a warning of nearing battles. This could also be the same/similar ability as that to sense Shadowspawn, or even of "reading the Pattern", maybe. Localised prophecy? Idk
Anywho, thanks again!
The Tam revelations were revealed in Episode 7. The TV producers wanted to draw out the "who is the Dragon" mystery in a way that the books do not. As a book reader, I didn't like it, but I've heard from friends who didn't read the books that they were caught up in it. Not sure if it was worth it in the end, but oh well.
As a full spoiler review, I'm surprised you didn't talk about Tam's speech during the Bel Tine celebration. He gives literally the most important line of the series in the first episode! It's the same line that Rand tells himself at his darkest moment, when he almost destroys the world!
So that opening with Liandrin was a last minute change. The execs didn’t like the original opening and it was cut and new opening inserted. The assumption is since it was last minute there either wasn’t budget or time for special effects
If my memory serves me right, Egwene was never a part of the green ajah because she went from Accepted to Amyrlin. I think she faked being a green when she wasn't Aes Sedai at all at one point. I could be wrong about this.
Correct. She also mentions wishing to have become Green a couple times, but that's like the one thing she didn't do
I love you’re reacting to season 1 again as well as your first reaction to season 2. Well done in your support for the strike and holding off this long. It’s going to be great watching all your upcoming reactions 👏👏👏
One of the things I found most interesting in the books was the eventual diversification of Emond's Field and the Two Rivers. The show starting off that way robs the opportunity to portray the process they went through in the books under Perrin and Faile's leadership.
Padsn Fain getting some storytelling time would have been nice. Even better if they had introduced Thom Merriln here like in the books. Have the little standoff between those two in competing for attention.
They can't show anything further on Rand's side because the mistery. But, they do a foretelling with Moraine telling "I come for you", facing Rand. "all of you" just after😊
Apparently they wrote the pilot as a longer (90+ minutes) episode and then it was cut down by Amazon. They still could have done better with the pacing and introductions in this episode.
Well this rewatch did just remind me of all the things the show cut n skipped for literally since that had no reason or purpose. They already adapting so much content into so little time n they waisted so much time on useless content that does not progress the characters development or the world building to any important aspect.
I am loving this rewatch. Was looking forward to you seeing season 2 but this is so enjoyable.
I think we have the same feelings now you have read the series. The actors i feel nailed their jobs really well, but the writing focus was just so odd.
Rafe Judkins complains that Sony and Amazon refused to make Leavetaking longer than 60 minutes. The adaptation suffers because of it.
He also added that extraneous Warder episode which consumed 60 minutes out of roughly 480 minutes of season 1 runtime which had nothing at all to do with anything that actually happened in the books.
@@gilian2587 Ehhhh... the "Warder episode" really only had 20 minutes of that storyline. It feels like more because the episode opens/ends with the Warder stuff, but a lot happens (i.e. this is the kidnapping/torture of Perin/Egwene by the Whitecloaks). Moiraine enters tower politics, etc. A lot happens. I would argue that they are "showing" rather than telling the impact of the warder/AS bond, which gives payoff as early as S2 with Moiraine being shielded... and will really pay dividends in storylines down the road. They've really SHOWN what a warder/AS bond means, so that when shit really hits the fan, they won't have to waste time on world building. It's been done. Future seasons will really benefit. I would rather have this with payoffs later, rather than seeing Rand falling into a garden just to meet Elayne... only to have to re-meet her later. Part of them adapting the "series as a whole," means that they have to condense. This means they're going to introduce characters that matter when they can. Now that Elayne/Rand have met, I expect their relationship will be expedited from the book counterpart. It really all makes sense if you can take a step back and view the adaptation from that lens. IMO, they're doing a great job.
@@StateOfDaniel It depends on how much weight you give to the intent of the producer in producing a 'faithful' adaptation. Rafe's One Power kinda works like going super saiyan in dragonball z. You're referring to events in a Memory of Light; I think? I am pretty doubtful that the show will make it that far. Show Rand is much darker and morally compromised than book Rand at the stage of the end of book 3. Show Moiraine doesn't display even close to the same level of intellect that she does in the books. Show Mat is already nearly a darkfriend. All of Rand's moments to shine at the end of book 1 and book 2 have been given to Egwene. Rand's moment in book 3 is gone completely. None of the male characters really have any redeeming qualities; unlike their book counterparts. In my opinion, the show isn't an adaptation -- it's a cynical parody. In much the same form as Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers.
@@StateOfDaniel Maybe you have more faith in the showrunners than I do. Perhaps I am more pessimistic than I should be about the intent of Amazon's writing team. It is possible that you could be correct after all is said and done. The tendency to favor petty high school tier drama over focusing on the plot seems to be strong in the show's writing. I really hope you are correct; good sir, but I'm not expecting that you will be.
If you pay close attention, you will notice that Egwene’s dress has multiple colors when she climbed out of the water. A nice little foreshadowing for us book readers. 😊
I feel like the opening should have been Logain taking the city in his introduction scene later, rather than a random guy who is irrelevant to the story. It would show the danger of a man using the power and the background threat that the Aes Sedai are facing. Then have a scene of Liandrin and her sisters going to face him, and Moiraine going her own way to find the real dragon.
Okay you have a better Idea then make an adoptation of TWOT base on your perspectives.
@@Blue_delux Do you have a problem with people sharing their perspectives?
@@breezy3392to me, it's a great idea. Much better for sure
I agree. breezy has good instincts.
Just a reminder that the trolloc wasn't intending to drag Nynaeve to the cave. It was dragging her out of town (away from Moiraine/Lan) to eat her. She escaped and ran to the cave.
Yeah, I feel like a lot of the "criticisms" here are just things they've forgotten- or stuff that happens later in the show than it does in the books but is still addressed.
Oh, I was expecting for you guys to watch Season 2 not rewatch Season 1 but I suppose it does make sense to do a rewatch. And giving your thoughts after having read the books vs what they originally were pre-reading the books will certainly be interesting.
(I am only on your Shadow Rising bookclub videos however so I'll probably not watch your return to the show for a while now lol.)
What would they be doing beside Ale ? ? it was bel tine morning there should have been Martial competitions ! Archery, quarterstaff combats .. etc !!
One thing I liked about the scene with Egwene in the river at the start - she had to let go fighting the water and flow with it to survive, much like how women are taught to use sadiar. I always wondered if that was a deliberate opening metaphor.
Do they ever mention saidar and Saidin tho? I don’t think that’s in the show
@@aishwarya8241 They are explicitly mentioned in the animated shorts Amazon made as well as in Old Tongue iirc, but yeah even when it was used in Old Tongue the subtitles just put "the Power" instead of the specific half iirc.
Honestly, in hindsight, that river scene might be the best adaptation of the book's magic system in the whole show.
Oof.
So are they going to have Rand directly grappling with a firesnake and beating the poor critter into senselessness as a saidin metaphor?
"We're going to be chatty"🤣Coming from 3+ hours of book club and you did this in under an hour, it seems like a super quick video.
Nynaeve roaring back at the trolloc is one of my favorite scenes of this episode. There was so much potential here. The only real issue I had with casting was that I expected someone much bulkier for a blacksmith (Perrin). No shade on the actor who has the role, but I was expecting Hoss from Bonanza. I guess they had to make Loial look bigger by shrinking the rest of the cast. The diversity... it's not how I pictured it and it takes away from the "exotic-ness" of the other cultures in later world building, but it isn't what ruins the show.
I understand the feeling about Matt's storyline in the books - the issues with consent and slavery, but I still think of him as being more carefree/player/scamp and I don't like the show's darker version of his personality and family history.
The biggest issues are that they cut so many important plot points to put in romantic fan fiction and "who is the dragon" mystery, but they aren't even consistent in the changes to the magic and oaths they did make. I actually canceled my Prime subscription after season 1. This show was the only self-justification I had for keeping the subscription and I just have no interest in season 2 (let alone 3). I'll watch you guys and see if it can turn you around and see if they get a season 4.
From memory I think they flash back to Rand and Tams conversation, I think in the episode that reveals that Rand can channel. Haven't re watched it since it first came out, found it too painful as a big fan of the books.
You kind of touch on this subject. My biggest issue (among many) with the series has been the idea that the Dragon could be male or female. Women being able to channel has been accepted since the Breaking. The thread throughout the books is the fear of any man that can channel. The need to hide that one of the "boys" could channel drives the need for secrecy, etc. I think changing that lessens the danger to an extent.
It’s really interesting to see how you’re watching perspective as switch to a book reader perspective. We all had similar thoughts. It’s part of how we loved seeing non readers perspectives and how the tv series works for non readers so well.
Ah yes. Screaming at your partner. The hidden, 6th love language.
Ah -- Saldean love. Such a noisy thing.
So glad this review/reaction has started I've been patiently waiting.
Now this is a rewatch I can ask, does anyone have any idea how they are planning to deal with Rand’s polygamous relationships? Who thinks they’ll downplay 2 in favour of one, and which one will they choose? 🤔
Yeah cuz like if they have been isolated for a thousand or more years whatever Races they started off would have merged together to produce something else that's more homogeneous
It was fun to see all the Easter Eggs...'specially in the Story of Manetheren in the next episode 😊
The Winespring Inn is called that because of the quality of the water from the spring nearby, not because it has wine on the menu.
Egwene would have chosen the Green Ajah if she had become an Aes Sedai by the normal route. She thinks about that multiple times in the books.
They could not do the iconic Tam scenes in this episode because of the decision of making who the Dragon Reborn is more of a mystery than it is in the books, and those scenes would have given too much away.
Memories! I can watch you two talking WOT all day long!
can’t watch bc I am staying a show-only until the show ends, but boosting this for the algorithm bc you guys are great!!
5:05 I lied like hell lmao but my opinion on this was always that it’s a good way to avoid the “they deserve it/what other choice is there” feelings that could come when men channel fully mad/violent? Like this scene to me emphasized how much of a tragedy the whole situation is (since he begged for his friends life instead of fighting the reds), that would’ve been undercut if it was a fight-fight. Now I’m gone!! ❤
Went to find what I actually said bc I am slightly over the top 😅:
“idk how it goes in the books, but i think it goes to showing how much of a tragedy the taint is?? it’d be so easy to do a kind of reductive ‘men are inherently bad’ take w this kind of magic system, but from minute one (that one man choosing to beg for his friend’s life instead of trying to fight the reds) it’s been clear that people can be so gentle and kind and good and it’s a tragedy when power corrupts that goodness”
I'm wanting to know what the starting chapters for Mistborn are going to be so I can read along as a first-timer. Where would I find that out?
Now that you two have read the books -- you know all about that purple Ajah that I was trying to tell you about from over a year ago. : )
I hope Matt's parents get a redemption arc. Season three will be mostly book four, and that will be a good place to do it.
I definitely want a chatty rewatch.
Just starting the video, I'm so excited!
🎉
I like the guy that plays Matt in season 2. But I haven’t read the books.
Literally every episode needs 10 more minutes and each season needs 2 more episodes. It's the single biggest issue imho. I love the show, and especially now after season 2, I appreciate a lot of the choices being made to take millions of words and condense them down into ~8 seasons of TV. But I think some of the little gems that set WoT apart may be lost in the translation and emotional inter-character relationship moments could be developed SO much more with just a 30 second scene here and there.
As for the biggest sin of the show, the killing of Perrin's wife, I 100% understand why they needed something to give us Perrin's conflict that is nearly all internal dialogue in the books, but again with more time and just a few more scenes they could've developed the Luhans, that relationship and had him kill (or even just horribly wound if we want him for later events) Master Luhan. More time! There's a season 2 miss that underscores this too as one of the greatest tGH moments is left on the cutting room floor, almost certainly for time.
As for the racists among the fandom (breaks my heart still how ugly it got) Manetheren was a cosmopolitan city state that was most assuredly very diverse. And although the Two Rivers has been isolated, the people's that they come from most certainly were not. Nerdy, you're too kind and it's admirable how you're assuming good intent. I can't bring myself to be forgiving about that pre-release debacle that happened to reveal the worst among us.
While i'm sure there's some in the fandom, I don't believe it's racist to think the people of the Two Rivers should at least be rocking similar tans at this point in the story (outside of Rand being the lone giant redhead, of course).
The Wheel of Time is a very diverse series, but the Two Rivers just wasn't. And while there's room to feature anyone on-screen, not using an easy tool to represent cultural homogeny is just kinda weak casting in a visual medium. This is represented in the clothing choices as well, imo.
Especially with what happens to the Two Rivers later in the story. That's where i believe this version of the Two Rivers would have worked perfectly.
As is, the Two Rivers casting feels more like your local high school play filling roles, than from one of the most expensive shows around.
Not remarking on acting ability here, and most of the main cast is great, imo, but the show just doesn't look like isolated village people. That doesn't require a specific shade or hue, just a similar one relative to each other.
That's not a racist criticism. It's just an observation of villages in the real world. Eventually, family traits merge, and 1k years is a decently long eventually. 50 generations with how many families?
The show's casting would suggest the Two Rivers people were themselves incredibly racist (and inbred). But that's definitely not something we see in the books.
This show doesn’t need anymore time. They wasted a lot of the that they did have. If they had more time they would still put more filler into it.
i can't express how much I have been waiting to see this video!
Re playing up the Rand/Egwene romance: I actually think this was an improvement over the books. The books occasionally mention that they started as a couple, but it never really actually shows in how they act. When they "break up" (at the beginning of book 4?), it's kinda a letdown "were they ever really a couple at all" moment. In the show, they more definitively start as an actual couple, and with callbacks to it, I think it will improve the ability to play up when they overly swing between trusting and distrusting each other in future seasons because they can really feel like an ex couple.
The books never mentioned that they started as a couple. Egwene took an interest in Rand when she was a young girl and the village generally assumed that the two of them would be 'intended'; and Rand behaved towards her with a kind of bashfulness that one would expect with an uncertain crush. They were never an 'actual couple' in the books.
Thank you!! I’ve been waiting for this 😊
Brandon is on record as saying he recommended that if they were going to have Perrin kill someone that having him kill his mentor luhan would have been a better choice then giving him a wife and fridging her. So your thoughts are in line with BS.
Wasn't Perrin's wife also the master blacksmith?
Been a minute, but iirc, she has more forging scenes than Perrin does, doesn't she?
Did I miss it, but I can’t see any of the other videos?
Not sure if I'm gonna watch this series when I finish the WoT books. I'm the type of person whose gets salty if there are too many changes from the source material.
This series won't be for you then. They change almost everything...
Even if the show isn't for you, there are some fantastic videos around dissecting it (including this one).
Something to be thankful to the show for, i suppose.
@@NerdyNightly I wouldn't say they change almost everything. They've stated multiple times that they're doing an adaptation of "the series as a whole" rather than book by book. They have a 5 season plan as well as an 8 season plan (if they get what they fully want). I think if you view it as a series adaptation, it's pretty easy to see where they're going with it. The general story is the same but the plot is different - similar to how the the big picture stories of LOTR/Star Wars/Harry Potter are generally the same, but yet they are all distinct stories.
@@StateOfDaniel Another possibility is that claiming to adapt "the series as a whole" is mere sleight of hand to obfuscate the fact that nothing about Amazon's story is going to correlate with Robert Jordan's story in anything more than the broadest, most approximate strokes. Allowing for females to be the dragon reborn reduces the intrigue and suspense of the paradox of a savior who is destined to save the world and/or break the world and go mad. Their dragon reborn mystery box has already thrown away a superior plot device in favor of a bland tv trope.
Do you think the pilot should have been a two parter?
I missed you guys!!

If you're looking for book series to go through in the future, I reccomend Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files".
This show could really use more episodes per season. Instead of 8 it really needs at a minimum. 12.
One Piece has proven that excuse wrong.
If One Piece could stuff 12 volumes worth of story into 8 episodes, and have an awesome season, there is no excuse for this mess. The writers would rather spend time with horny sex scenes (with no nudity, or sex), and nipple-pinchy funeral scenes for characters nobody cares about.
exactly, if it was 12 episodes the 4 more would be more cw drama or shitty aes sedai side stories, it would hurt the show even more.
I feel like it could have fit better into 8 than it did with more concise writing and worldbuilding.
@@breezy3392possibly, but the world of The Wheel of Time is massive, just look at the size of the books. Look at how Moiraine explained Manetheren in the books compared to the show. They needed that extra time. IMHO
@@jamessimmons1486 Oh, I agree more episodes would have been best to tell a story like this. But I also think the time they did have could have been used so much better than it was.

Hi guys, I'm ready to see how being book readers affects your perception of the series. I haven't watched any of your season 2 videos. People say season 2 is better but I think it suffers from some of the same things as season 1. I've come to believe it's too difficult to tell in this medium. Matt's memories of battles, the dice rolling in his head? How could you portray that. Perrin's ability to smell emotion, talk to wolves mentally? But I'll watch season three. Kinda like a car wreck. Hard to watch but morbidly interested. I watched all of season 2 once. season 1 I watched three times. Also the time between seasons is going to forestall any momentum you could create.
Ahhh I’m so excited for these!!!
It upsets me how much they get right in this show, because it still falls flat because of a single thing: the writing. The cast is sooo amazing (especially in season 2). The sets look incredible. The VFX works (especially in season 2). And the costumes are better than almost any other fantasy show. There is so much they get right in the technical aspect that it baffles me how bad the writing is. Manufactured tension all the way through. Characters don't have arcs, they just kinda exist to be in scenes. The worldbuilding is contradictory and lacking in detail in so many places. And the magic isn't communicated well at all (from what they communicate, I'm not sure they understand it themselves).
I really don't think that successful book authors and script writers for tv shows are cut from the same cloth.
Add bad casting to this critique.... and some seriously horrible changes to the story.....
Rafe was the wrong person to entrust this show to..... can't believe Harriet approved this. Brandon has said what he can about it, but he is pretty much legally gagged....
@@pskarnaq73 I specifically said I was impressed with the casting. That doesn't necessarily mean I was impressed with the performances, but it's not the actors' fault. They did the best they could with the script that was given to them.
I am curious though, which casting choice do you not agree with?
@@sivzzz3008 I don't believe that it's the casting that's the problem. Show Moiraine is terrible compared to her book counterpart. Rosamund Pike can act -- and she's a highly skilled actress -- it's probably just the writing that's making her rendition of Moiraine look like temperamental goat in a dress.
@@gilian2587 Yeah that's how I fell as well.
Like the chatty
Its annoying... Matt's character/family being so negative rather than being just a young guy having fun. This this also links into the village being so seedy rather than a small close-knit community, Perrin being married, Egwene being Ta'vern and missing the crucial scene with Rand and Tam.
It really seems like someone had a grudge against Mat's character in the books, or else, took book-Mat's description of himself seriously..
Or perhaps was the result of plotting by committee?
One of the changes I was totally fine with was making Egwene ta'veren. She basically was: loaded with amazing coincidences to succeed in whatever she needed to, possessing a rare Talent, and being in the top four characters by POV chapters and word count - having more than Matt, and about as much as Perrin.
(For anyone wondering, Elayne is the fifth place - but it's not even close)
Surprised you haven't posted season 2 watch vids.
I always thought miscarriage and that their boat was for their lost child.
Really looking forward to you reacting to season 2. I’ve been rewatching both seasons to try getting my watch count closer to the number of times I’ve read the books. The story continues really well in season 2.
Episode 1 should have ended when the last trolloc was killed, and a calm settled over the village. And the sound of the injured. Episode 2 should have begun at daybreak a few hours later, with Rand arriving with Tam. And no fridging, or Dark Mat. Or CW romance.
I think the Rand/Egwene romance stuff helps set up the closeness of their relationship and their different personalities and goals ultimately causing them to drift apart which... kind of does matter going forward.
Fun to see this rewatch, and excited for your watch of season 2. The series is definitely going a different direction from the books, but it has its own strengths, and there's some great stuff next season!

The ones watching it is their first watch the hole point of it was for them to experience it uncolored but because they have the #1 fiction written on our generations n that help fish the series give is opinion with other like themselves UA-camrs first time watchers also like them book readers give there opinion in some occasions different then Brando Sanderson n only at the end they have a full discussion. I’m sorry but ur objective have zero merit, ur pot is don’t look a show with other people that also are first time watchers because u will hate it. N what make u say I want them to hate the show? The hole point of having Brandon Sanderson there is that at the end discussion he explained why the show runers made those decisions.
@@BxLxOxO ow that means there reactions are on Patreon thanks for informing me us, n what a shame. That was why I wanted it to for them to react to bout at the same time because I knew they would not react to Brandi’s reaction by itself; a reaction of a reaction is not entertaining. I thought they were going to wait for the strike to end for their reaction to it.
@@nicolascardillo7615 that's right. You reminded me why I don't read the comment section on this channel.
I would have preferred the Two Rivers be almost all brown, be that black, or cast mixed white-black actors, or all Hispanic actors, but after being isolated for so long and intermarrying so much, they'd all be one ethnicity. Rand would then stand out as the only redhead and only clearly white person, still allowing for a more diverse cast.
just finished s2, and i think it helped by not remembering the exact plot points of the books, let me just consider the show and not compare to the books
don't worry even if you haven't read the books or somehow forgotten everything most parts still don't make sense, and the biggest thing that doesn't make sense show watcher or book reader is the magic, its rules, and how it works.
@@johnk.4389 Deus ex machina helps to have as a magic system -- it helps an author or a scriptwriter write themselves out of corners of their own making. Hard magic systems force a large team on a large project to maintain consistency at a level that is probably logistically unrealistic for most projects -- would require a far higher degree of competence than most directors can achieve.
I actually like the Cauthons like this (unpopular opinion, I know). I think it’ll just make it more compelling if they still include the storyline where Abel Cauthon saves Nattie and the girls. It’ll be more of a character moment than just a less important piece by of the plot like in the book.
It would make for a great moment, but it does make building Mat as a character harder, especially given how little time they give his plot in season 2
I like the change IF they follow up on it.
On the other hand... it would provide additional motivation for Bode to want to leave for the White Tower.
In the books Rand’s mom was a red head though. I don’t get how being ginger is a big deal in the books sometimes.
The acting is fantastic and that's what really matters. So I don't care about the diversity of the Two Rivers in the show. That being said. The population of the Two Rivers should not be that diverse. I'm not saying they should be white. In my mind they were native American. Diverse mean "different". Not "not white".
I've enjoyed the series so far. I don't mind the changes. I've enjoyed season 2 more than season 1. I understand why season 1 felt a bit slower, there was a lot of world building for non-book viewers. My only criticism of the show is there are some really over drawn out scenes with no dialogue. But especially the lingering travel shots are just cringe. There are some weird contradictions in season 2, but won't go into them here. But again, overall enjoyed season 2's arc more.
the moraine telling a story for 5 mins would not have worked for a pilot episode.
5 minutes would be crazy, but I disagree about the scene not working
You do realize that Rafe hates the books and is actively trying to destroy the story, right? He has admitted as much. This show isn’t an adaptation, it’s an assassination.
Now since you are seasoned book readers, you can see how ridiculous the show is compared to the book
this series is very bad, bad special effects, with or another good actor and the other terrible.
Alright!
Let's rip this horrible little show a new hole!
This show is so bad, and it isn't even "funny bad". Just broken narrative and boring dialog. Awful "Jump-cut" fights so we can tell that absolutely nobody knows how to hold a sword, and there is no choreographer on set.
Just trash.
So now you have the knowledge necessary to understand where purist hardliners are coming from. And that's great and all. They're not completely without merit, yet also quite hyperbolic, and at times peppered with explicit and/or implicit signs of bigotry and bias. But you really should cool your jets on judging everything in the show as if it is supposed to develop and resolve exactly as the books laid out. Not everything is going to play out as the books. Conclusions like "it's not working" or "it's not going to lead anywhere" are not necessarily correct because you don't have the full picture of where the show intends to go, and are instead substituting that with where it goes in the books. It's reasonable to expect that the plot of the show will be tethered to important events from the books. But a lot of connective tissue will be subject to pragmatic adjustments for the purpose of making the story work as a tv show under specific real-life business constraints, not necessarily for making the show into a carbon copy of the book's plot sequence. I would hope that you haven't touched the poison dagger in a way that will ruin your ability to enjoy the show. It's a much more healthy approach to see where things diverge and to wonder about why that change helped what the show is doing, and where the show will develop because of that change, waiting for the show to payoff its own setups and allowing yourself to enjoy the story like it's your first time.
Funny that you should mention a "poison dagger", because there is a famous one in this show.
It stabs a lot of people, and they don't die. They just reappear the next season with zero explanation. LOL!
Like this person who can't stop clutching the books and think about the fact that there is also nothing in the show that has made it necessary for such an explanation to exist.
@@FlagrantVagrant Huh?
It only appears to be a problem to you because you allow yourself to get stuck in an attempt to reconcile with trivialities you know from having read the books. I laid all this out in my first comment. It's a path of deliberation that you ultimately make the choice to follow that hurts your enjoyment of the show.
@@FlagrantVagrant I've never read the books. I get bored in the middle of the first one, and quit. What are you talking about? LOL!
This show makes OBJECTIVE mistakes, like bright electric light reflected off faces in a candle-lit room.
You are making excuses. Not to mention the hypocrisy of accusing me of being some kind of book purist, when I haven't even read them! Were you not pontificating some nonsense about not having all the information? Don't you think knowing if I read the book is some information you should have had before you accused me of adhering to it?
The show sacrificed a lot to keep up the mystery of “who is the dragon?”
