Master keyboardist Keith Emerson is one and only ! As W.A.Mozart. Few musicians can match K. Emerson exceptional mastery. Jordan Rudess is a class of his own. Bravisimo.
Its awesome to hear this piece played on modern keyboards as I've heard Keith's older recordings. With the newer sounds, the frequencies are so much crisper that it was a good idea to interpret it. I recall watching the live broadcast a bit, but couldnt make the show.
He's paying tribute to one of his early inspirations. Rudess is more than capable of improvising the hell out of it. But that sort of defeats the purpose.
Hard to tell what Rudess is playing, and what are backing tracks (I doubt there's a backing band). Also, might be SMPTE sync, but right when he starts playing, I see hand to key movement before any audio. Reminds me of lip syncing... Obviously Rudess has fast fingers and is a creative musician. But for all his effort at trying to make a more modern sounding "Tarkus", which I guess he does because he has the box to do it (what IS that keyboard he's playing? FATAR controller to ProTools PlugIns?), I still prefer the original. I just don't think the 'funking up' is necessary, nor the additional arpeggios (I mean, aren't there enough in the original? The entire ostinato is a stacked forth polychord arpeggio..). I like his singer, though.
The delay from keys to sound is just syncing of the video. This arrangement was on a studio album, this is just a version he's made work to perform live. His setup is the same as usual, just Korg Kronos (used to be Oasys) playing along to a backing track that he's muted specific parts so he can fill in the blanks with various instruments set up. I do a similar set up, as it feels just like playing to a band, except the only mistakes that can happen are from you :P Fair enough that you prefer the original :)
he usually plays Korg Kronos on stage, but not sure sounds are actually from Kronos. in some interview he stated that he uses A LOT of software plugins. So maybe Korg used mainly as midi controller - for endorsement sake :-)
JDStone Creations In kronos, can you play audio/wav backing track and switch programs/combis while the backing track is playing in sequencer mode or so? Is it possible? :)
I was going to go to this but didnt for whatever reason. I heard some simple bass sequences, but the technically difficult parts he was doing so, and all on one board. That takes alot of preprogramming, board splits, pedals. Not sure cause I dont play Kronos, but it woulda been cool if he couldve had like 6 keys set up just for sound variety. Theres a repetitive timber even in some of those plugins sometimes.
+Zammataro Stradivarius I do play kronos, and newest model of it. There's a lot of stuff coming from separate backing track ( propably computer ) that are not being played back from kronos. You cannot change combinations ( combination of layered sounds ) with kronos while playing audio backing tracks or the playback will stop, it's not powerful enough as keyboard for that believe it or not. You can change individual sounds though without audio playback being interrupted, but then you're limited to 16 sounds ( you can make little combos from those 16 however ) and in this demonstration that's not happening as there's so many things layered together. Also kronos polyphony is surprisingly bad, i've had combination where there is only piano and one pad and it starts to note steal already, this depends on multiple factor but it's no where near as powerful as korg would want you to believe it is. Synth is good though, but lacking in many areas, specially out of the box orchestral sounds, strings, choirs are seriously bad. OS has not been reliable it has crashed on me as live and it takes approx 2.5 mins to boot up again without loading additional samples. It's very picky from power current changes so you will want an UPS for live usage specially if in old club, church or venue that has power pinned to the max, even when not using additional samples. Don't get me wrong it's still an ok synth and can sound pretty darn good, but it's far from what you'd expect to get based on hype and reviews for 4k price. Out of todays workstations though, i'd still say it's a clear winner.
+Puny Poppy I figured that. But you didnt address keyboard splitting or how he triggers sound changes---pedals? Preprogramming. The recording mix is an issue too. You cant hear 100% over the vocals at times. BTW didnt anyone hear Massimo Buccis fantastic piano Tarkus? Using piano it gives you the ability to really hear the distinction between notes even more. His Firth of Forth is great too.
Zammataro Stradivarius He does it through footpedal mostly, sometimes sounds he uses cam have a velocity trigger, aka when he hits harder he gets another layers sound through but mostly it's 99.99% footpedal. I use that myself also. Hard to hear to mix you're right! We'd need to hear either the man playing all by himself or the backing track to be able to tell for sure. :) Thanks i will check out Massimo!
+Puny Poppy Okay. I also pointed out that when you have a jack of all trades keyboard, the timbers get boring. It wouldve been great to hear it with a 6 keyboard setup. ALSO. I recall that this gig was Streamed Live at Iridium's website. I recall I tuned in late and caught only the ending. I went to John Wetton with the Les Paul Trio there. They made a CD out of it. Nice club Iridium if youre ever in NY. Just dont get on bad side of Ron, the owner (long story).
Zammataro Stradivarius I live thousands of miles away bro, unfortunately. :( You're rigjt with the timbres :) Last i heard Wetton was in old UK album, but that was this week anyway so not that long ago hehe. Though he was 30-40 years younger in those albums :D
very well, nice interpretation, but no one can compete with the master Keith Emerson, the best keyboardist of all time, but not bad, Jordan Rudess good!
He is playing it live, but he's playing it TO a Studio Version, you can tell that at 6:24. It makes sense because you have to play to a recording, it would sound so dumb if it was just him playing to no recording, and it'd probably be the most boring performance ever. If you want to just hear it without the Guitar, just go look up his Tarkus Performance at Namm, it sounds almost the same as this only without guitar, and then Drum overlord Rod Morgenstein is also playing there.
Well, he does have to play to a Recording, which he is doing as you can clearly tell. There has to be Guitar/drum parts in the mix or else it'd sound awkward as fuck.
It is very good but a little too much , not to take away from Jordan's playing and writing capabilities. I like the fact Keith did his original without the help of the computers in the keyboard, and it was believable ;)
+James Starchuk Who cares? Jordan's point isn't to replicate the technology. It is a tribute because he loves the piece of music and Kieth. Frigg off...
+James Starchuk .... we all loved to play Emo's stuff on a solo piano. I didn't realize it was all right to play solo's noises off. like the guitar part at 500
Sorry all you fans, but thats lame. The drums and half of the keyboards are not played live but are coming from the computer, he is playing the main keyboardparts to the studio version, there is no improvisation, so whats the point of doing it? if he would come up with his own version only solo piano i would be impressed. Its a good job though if you see it as a etude...
@@theflyingscotsman9902 Thats a most stupid response. Do you mean that anyone who has criticism has to be able to play better? Search on youtube and you will find versions of the songs played by nobodys equal and even better, and everything live without lame ass accompagniement from a computer.
It's not real, The video is real, but the audio is clearly from "The Road Home" and is edited badly to fit the playing. I came here to hear the real live version, not an edited album version.
Love this guy. A great player and somebody with a profound understanding of what makes prog happen.
Hot damn folks...Jordan is off & running. Excellent version!
Brilliant rendition of an already masterful piece. Jordan, you are an amazing player/technician!
You make it look so easy! Loved it.
Thank you for posting this.
Great arrangement of Tarkus by the amazing Jordan Rudess!
You have influenced me so much. Great stuff!
I love your arrangement. I hope that one day it will be available on Spotify

fantastic!
Did keyboard for a living. Tarkus------Damm hard to get it right and this performance it spot on. Needs more guitars to build the keyboard intro.
Its awesome to hear this piece played on modern keyboards as I've heard Keith's older recordings. With the newer sounds, the frequencies are so much crisper that it was a good idea to interpret it. I recall watching the live broadcast a bit, but couldnt make the show.
Nothing really beats the vintage analog / Hammond organ sound though - I often find Jordan Rudess’ sounds a bit on the cheesy side.
Interesting version.....original in some keyboards sounds.....good job !!!!
i love it :)
I like it! Very jazzzzy!!!!
Impressive cover - Instrumental section between verses in Stones of Years is off the hook, very creative use of sound choices!
Amazing!
I listen to her version at least 3 times a week and it's great. But the backing tracks definitely give it more "oomph".
fusion jazz

Wonderful transition into the "song". :)

I have no idea! It would be good to know though. That might be a question for Korg themselves! :)
He played everything at some point, because he had to program it in.
This is the inverse-karaoke version of the song. :-)
Ngejazzz biangetzzz

Impressionnant
Shit, you're right ! Thanks
Nice!
então é daí que vem aqueles musicas de demostração dos teclado baratos!?!

Vocals sound like Steven Wilson.
Steven Wilson sang on Tarcus cover from Rudess' solo album The Road Home
actually it is version from The Road Home, minus keyboard track, which Jordan plays live
Tarkus asian version

Great talent but, lots of added trills just to...I don't know... to add trills doesn't make it musically interesting to me.
wow!!! this is why i don´t use my synth anymore:-)
fodastic...................
is that a Kronos?
He usually plays a Kronos, but I'm not sure.
Musical Alchemy.

Good! But it's always better to replace Lake with instruments when doing an ELP cover; any other voice is always underwhelming.

What's the point in a live performance, if you make us hear the studio version...
He’s playing some parts live but of course there is a backing track too - he can’t physically play everything at once!
Wow, it's amazing that he can have all that skill and still manage to not capture a single bit of the song's emotion.
Just can't please some bitches, eh?
Sorry all you fans, but thats lame.
