I play this song on keyboards and it is unbelievably difficult. Keith Emerson plays it effortlessly. I struggle through the whole thing. Emerson was more of a contemporary classical avant-garde composer than Rock. I rate him as one of the great composers ever, which may sound silly, I was classically trained from page 5 on piano. He is just a genius of incomparable Talent. this Symphony rendition is a huge tribute to ELP and is dynamic and fantastic!

More proof that Keith Emerson was composing serious music in a rock context that will live forever. I would definitely see an orchestral concert of Emerson's work. No disrespect to Lake and Palmer.
With all due respect, that concert could be Nice, but probably a boring piano/synth concert, not an assembly, orchestral classic rock concert like this one. it is worth to mention that practically all melody and counter-melody lines are by Lake, and percussion by Palmer is awesome by itself while perfectly matched to Emerson/Lake compositions. Looking at the Pictures at an Exhibition's composers/arrangers will depict this.
the time signature of tarkus is from carl, he give to keith, is a mix of practicing time signature of carl at the time mix with ideas of keith at the time, its a thing tell lake in one interview, but yes, keith is the maestro, with davis and zappa one of the most important musicians in modern music
Its incredile how GOOD is Tarkus in a orchestral cover. The ELP music is so tecnical and so articulated that fits perfectly well in a polyphonic rendition of a classic orchestra.
My guess is Takashi Yoshimatsu might've arranged it. I can't say for certain but they show him several times in the crowd in the video and he is a composer who loves ELP. If you like this arrangement you should check out some of his symphonies. They're fantastic!
Keith, Greg, and Carl were all in their early twenties when they created “Tarkus”…I was 13 yrs old the first time I listened to the lp..still playing it today..50 years later..a masterpiece! Don’t forget about the “b” side of Tarkus.
Mr Roy. I'm the youngest of 5 brothers. But I can remember crawling around on the floor and being terrified if this album cover. Saying that ELP has been in my blood for close to 54 years. It is just as alive as it was then. I had a great friend play Trilogy on a full concert grand at my brother's passing early this year. It was very emotional but also very justified. After listening to recording from the funeral and talking with my friend. He told me he knew of the song and heard it many time but never sat down and try to play it. When I asked if he would he said he would be honored but really didn't know It, and kinda short notice. But I've known this guy since grade school and I knew he would do a very good job at it. And I'm here to say he nailed it Spot on. I couldn't of asked for a better friend to come through for me like that. And I'm sure my brother was honored by it.
Keith was proud and he loved the conductor. Several years ago he respond a comment I do on his facebook page when hi posted this very concert, about how cool seems to me the conductor. He replies telling how much he loved this work especial the conductor and tell me his name. I recall it was almost the only comment he do on that post. I can't believe he took the time to comment, but he did it . Months later I knew he killed himself.
Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Brilliantly done full of life and excitement. The maestro in this is incredible. You can tell he is in love with this piece of music.
It's a great shame he is not here to witness this. All three were talented beyond all normal standards and the composition skills and playing ability of Keith was just outstanding. His ability in bringing all the sounds created here by a full orchestra to live audiences by just the three individuals was magic. I know because I saw them...more than once. Phenominal on stage and just as intricate as the studio version only better because of the additional improvisation they treated a live audiences to. They can be copied and emulated today but I don't see the shear creative genious of ELP anywhere nowadays. A once in a lifetime gift that will last for generations.
Echoing BrainPolice5's comment, it's absolutely amazing just how much musical sound came from these 3 musicians vs. a full orchestra. ELP were truly one of a kind greats.
Hearing ELP orchestrated like this really helps to highlight the band's influence on Koji Kondo. Some parts of this sound like they could be lifted out of Zelda, especially with this arrangement. It's such a beautiful approach to such an important piece of music.
I think this arrangement might be by Takashi Yoshimatsu. Hasn't scored any video games (although he did the astro boy 2003 reboot) but his music sounds very Zelda (it's what brought me here!)
@@MarioGimeno The conductor is different, but there is a recording of the same arrangement played by the same orchestra. I don't know if you can find it on Spotify, but you can find it by searching for "Tarkus-Classic Meets Rock".
Getting honored by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra is the kind of homage that few musicians ever deserve :) I only wish the transitions had more edit (and seconds between)... どうもありがとうございました
Actually, this video is a bit edited. In the actual TV version, between the First Tarkus part and the latter, Marty plays Piano part of Rafmaninoff Piano Concert No.2 Third part as a Rock playing with Orchestra vs. Tarkus's Orchestra plays the rock. It is quite good.
This is so good, just shows how much ELP was virtuoso at their music. I love this version because it gives room to so many instruments of the orchestra. This reminds me of Holt's "Planet" in some way. But indeed a lot of solid rock music can and is played with a classical orchestra with much "grandeur" !!! Bravo !
Magníficos arreglos y orquestación. Me ha emocionado profundamente. No lo conocía, aunque soy fanático de ELP y he tenido la increíble suerte de poder verlos en vivo en 1997. Jamás he podido olvidar ese concierto. Al final del mismo, Emerson se subió al órgano e interpretó la Toccata y Fuga de Bach con las manos cambiadas y al revés... una pieza que ya es muy difícil de tocar normalmente. Keith Emerson vive por siempre, en mis recuerdos.
Though (ofcourse) every musician familiar with this piece likes to play certain parts in certain ways, of which follows me not being too enthusiastic about the pulse at some bits, I should definately say it has been turned into an orchestral piece wonderfully and I absolutely LOVE the aquatarkus of this version - great job :)
I think Aquatarkus and Eruption are the two part where they really nailed. If you listen the short excerpt arranged for the Royal Philarmonic you can realize that is more easy and musical but this one is epic form Aquatarkus till the end. I think that's a value: ua-cam.com/video/jGdof9OknEo/v-deo.html
The arrangement of this was done by the amazing composer Takashi Yoshimatsu by the way. Never knew there was a performance recorded on video! Always tried to find it over Yoshimatsu's name, it seems he's not mentioned by anyone here though, which is kind of a shame I think.
