I was an atheist for decades and Peterson's (free!) series on the psychology of the Bible got to me, and his "I live my life as if I did believe" were the sparks of my conversion. There was no burning bush, no cracks of lightening in the sky, nor did I suddenly know anything new I didn't know before *except* God actually is knowable, no matter how hard I was trying to to make that impossible. Grace is amazing indeed.

Peterson has been walking through his own discovery of Presuppositional Apologetics for a couple years now, and watching it is very reminiscent of C S Lewis' description of his intellectual conversion.
If the Lord isn't drawing Peterson, he's certainly using him to shed remarkable light on the Word, and how necessary it is to knowing anything at all.

JBP did a lecture on Old testament starting with Genesis, but decided to use the John verse as the introduction to the talk. He spoke of a metaphorical "hyperlink" between John and Genesis to make it more palatable to the modern folk, I suppose. That is another of Peterson's intrinsic gifts: accessibility and available to younger folk.

I don't know Peterson's ultimate fate, whether he will be saved (which is why I frequently pray for him as should you). But if he does make it, his journey to God will be remarkable. Not just for the route he took, but for the extensive documentation of it every step of the way. The man is a renowned intellectual who has put out content constantly detailing his most intimate thoughts and understandings of life and the world. If he comes to Christ, millions of people will be able to trace every minute step of the path he took to get there in extreme detail backed up by his own argumentation.
I think if he goes all the way, he has the potential to be the C. S. Lewis of the next century and beyond, if not more influential. Imagine the modern equivalent of Mere Christianity authored by Peterson. Imagining how God might use this man (to say nothing of how he has already used him) fills my heart with praise and glorification of Him and His power.
I feel Peterson is almost there, he only has to take that leap of faith. I suspect that prospect terrifies him, pray that the Holy Spirit would replace this fear with a righteous fear of God and submission to Jesus Christ.

It was mind-blowing that Peterson said it and acknowledged it. He basically stated that the Bible is Plato's 'Form' of a book or Book-ness. It is also the Platonic form of Truth. Without which there is neither Truth or nor Book. The Bible is in fact the archetype of Absolute Truth (which every Christian already understands). Peterson needs only acknowledge Christ as Lord. I suspect that will happen soon. The impact this guy is having bringing people to the Light even as a nonbeliever is astounding.

As a lament (who’s still on the cusp of atheism) I barely learned “ How “ you read the Bible and it blew my mind. It’s freaky to have learned that the more and more each generation deteriorates from the practices of Christianity the more we see it as some kind of weird belief that a magic man makes wishes in the sky which if you obey him (which I’ve barely learned it isn’t even in the same ballpark of how this religion works)

    • @SweetTea-Stephens
      @SweetTea-Stephens 2 роки тому +6

It’s not how it works, that’s true. The only people who believe that are those whom never read the Bible. Or at least never read it seriously and truly sought any answers of truth from it.
God doesn’t grant wishes, as we don’t make wishes to begin with. We may ask for what we want or need but, that does not mean he will give it to us. We understand that all things are done by his will and through his timing. God only promises us in scripture to give what we need and that’s not the same for all people. We are promised we will suffer as he did and because we love and follow him; and that’s proven true for sure, some worse than others. And we are promised tribulation now and eventually a great tribulation worse than anything we’ve ever seen, later.
But you see, we are okay with that. It’s a love that can’t be described in English. The word is chesed חסד and it’s like a deep deep love- like a love God has for his people and us for them. Deeper than a love you’d have for your wife/husband and kids. Closet word would be like agape love but even deeper than that.
That’s the love we have for him and him us; so we are okay with waiting for his timing, not being given riches of this world (this world is temporary anyhow it’s not our home), being oppressed, hated, jailed, beaten and possibly even killed for him. No TRUE follower of Yeshua cares or expects “wishes” to be granted to us, we just want to have a personal relationship with him and live our lives like he did and like he has called us to do, which is live holy lives like Yeshua was holy. We do good works because we love him, not because it gets us something. It doesn’t get us anything, not even salvation (you only get that from belief, acceptance then repentance). It just sets us apart from the world. If you can’t tell a follower of Christ apart from someone of the world (non believer) then they probably aren’t a true follower and are what God calls warm- someone whom he will spit out of his mouth because he’s neither hot (true follower) or cold (non believer). Warm Christian’s are the worst, they’re the fake only in name followers that the world believes all Christian’s are like and supposed to be like. The ones who believe you ask a guy in the sky for wishes and God grants them like a genie. The one who has million dollar planes and houses and still grabs every penny from the old ladies pension savings and tells her oh God will bless you if you give more, he grant whatever you want etc etc etc. that’s not how it works at all. That’s not what God has ever said either. I’m sorry people made you believe that tho.
He does bless his people tho. He will bless his people that follow him. He’s blessed me too many times! More than I’ve ever deserved! But it’s in his timing and in his will. He will also correct too, just like a parent when their child does wrong. But he will also eventually give someone over to their worldly ways and reprobate minds too (Romans states this). You can see our nation falling apart the more we step away from God and biblical beliefs. Look around and see how morally corrupt America and the world is today!! We have more atheists in America than ever before in our existence as a country. But we are morally and socially bankrupt as a nation big time.
A lot of people can read the Bible and not understand it. Yehovah (Gods name, he gave Moses in exo 3:14-16 but English translations don’t put it in there of course, it’s in the Hebrew I promise) says his sheep know his voice and will understand. That’s because our hearts aren’t of stone (hardened) but it flesh (softened) and we don’t have scales on our eyes (so we see); but those who are not his, will not understand. So first, ask him to help you understand before reading the Bible for you to see the word as written and as it’s supposed to mean. He will.
Start with the book of John and then read the book of Roman’s. If you never read any book in the Bible again, you got to read those two books. They explain the gospel and our need for Yeshua (Jesus) for non-believers, better than any other book in the entire Bible. Just start with those two. John first, then Roman’s. Don’t listen to non-believers on what they say, I promise majority of the time they have no clue what they are talking about as they all say the same moot points as everyone else; meaning they don’t research anything themselves and only repeating what they’ve been told. Read it for yourself and see. Research everything yourself and see.

I was a Christian for over 20 years. I only became an atheist once I realized that there was zero evidence to support any of the foundational stories in the Bible. There is absolutely no scientific evidence that supports Christianity, which is why scientists are much more likely to be atheists, compared to the population as a whole.
There is no reason for you to think that the gospel writers knew anyone associated with Jesus. We don’t know who the are. We do know that the contradict each other in parts, and directly plagiarize each other in others. Christianity cannot be true, since their god Yahweh, can’t exist as he is written in the Bible. His. attributes and actions completely negate themselves and make him a nonsensical character. Not to mention that Yahweh was a minor deity in an earlier polytheistic religion. We know that Judaism itself was polytheistic and there is sill evidence of that in the Bible itself. The Israelites gradually changed his story and THEY CREATED HIM, as the sole creator god, and called themselves his chosen people.

I studied science myself and it was after I used it to find what was truth that I became a christian. So, I would say that I was opposite of you. But, maybe think about this: If it’s true that you could not find scientific evidence that christianity is true even when you were a christian for 20 years, that only tells me you were looking for ways to disprove your own faith rather than looking for ways to prove it. I say this because wherever you put your focus on it’s where your heart will lead you even if you are an atheist. Most scientist are atheist because they are taught to only believe in what their reasoning can interprete. Science does not speak or interprete, scientist do according to their scientific method. Do you really think they like finding evidence that tells them they are wrong and that all their lives have been wasted in trying to deny that there is a God?
There is only 2 possibilities: Either everything came from nothing or everything cane from something. What is more possible? If everything came from nothing, which is what atheist scientics believe, then they believe in at least one miracle.
I agree that the Israelites were polytheistic, and judaism back it up. I agree that for them YHWH was a minor deity. The Bible proves it, so is the Bible saying the truth? However, seems like not all of them believed YHWH was a minor diety, and seems like somehow it’s always very, very few people that gets the idea and were able to prophecy what was going to happen hundreds of years after.
I haven’t been a christian as long as you, but it was only when I understood what being born again meant that I could met Jesus myself and prove to myselft that all of this is real. Just what’s happening to someone wait more intelligent than me, Jodan Peterson.

Yes, Felipe. Science is based on people proving other scientists wrong. You’re implying that they just didn’t find evidence because they don’t want to. Any scientist that finds evidence that disproves earlier accepted science...wins a Nobel Prize and becomes a millionaire. So your implication is silly.
No, I was trying to find evidence to support my earlier beliefs! I learned things that completely contradicted what I had been taught. This forced me to look for evidence to support my belief in Christianity. It was at this point that I sat down an read the whole Bible. These actions shows me how incredibly savage and disgusting the Bible is, and that there’s nothing at all to support the claims it makes.
There are no fulfilled prophecies in the Bible. A prophecy must be specific to a time, place, and event. There’s nothing like that in the Bible. It only has vague predictions on an infinite timeline. All vague predictions will come true on such a timeline.
Your words show that it is YOU who believes because you wanted to believe. Every single time I’ve talked to a former atheists turned theist, it is clear that they weren’t atheists for a good reason. You weren’t an atheists because you had researched religions and the problems with them. You weren’t an atheists because you used proper skepticism. You just weren’t brainwashed into it as a child, and later decided to join for, probably, bad reasons.
But I don’t want to assume. What’s your best piece of evidence that convinced that that, not only a god exists, but that the Canaanite god Yahweh was the real one?

I had thoughts of a tree with the roots (root words) as the foundation. The trunk as the strength and support (established words). And the branches and leaves growing (new words). Then you mentioned a network of words. Studies show that trees are linked together by a vast root network and actually communicate with each other.

That's one reason why sometimes rightly dividing the word can be tricky. We are so far downstream from the culture of the original authors, living in the culture that has been influenced by the book so deeply. Our historical and cultural understanding of the text can bias our individual reading of the text, which is not a bad thing as long as that bias puts us closer to the real truth, but it can sometimes be a hindrance.

Silence for peace than loudness, quietness of fear, not hopeless, for time and effort are equally unbiased. We are more than the stories we're told, we're the one's we write, each page unfold. We are the sum of our Lies and truth, fantasy, fiction, faith, and myths, no matter how uncouth. These are what shape us, our lives lived is the proof. We can be more right than wrong. More just than judge. More godlike than unlike. Reflecting Sunlight in our darkest night.
Providing refuge. Never more alive until we die within and begin again. A Human Ark Divine in our human spark.

Jordan’s current struggle from his most recent statements is being able to wrap his mind around things like “while we were YET sinners, Christ died for us.” Essentially what I got is that he doesn’t want to call himself a believer until his lifestyle perfectly matches his belief. He seems to struggle with the fact that he, as well as we all, are incapable of being perfect in our flesh. He seems to have this backwards idea that you need to be perfect and THEN God will save you and call you His child. To the contrary it’s the exact opposite. You CANNOT do anything pleasing to God or walk in victory over sin until you’re FIRST born again, which is a free gift given completely on your trust in Him, and not by your own merits. Otherwise Jesus would not have had to make the sacrifice He did. If we could attain a right standing with God on our own merit…why then was Christ crucified. If he comes to understand that conundrum correctly he will certainly surrender himself to God and receive eternal life. He just needs to get over that last critical hurdle of just admitting you’re a sinner and not good enough to get to heaven on your own instead of trying to be good enough on his own before making a profession of faith.

Amen. King David said in Psalms 51:12 “Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation and Thy free Spirit.”
He would not say such a thing if sin caused us to lose our salvation, but sin can certainly take the joy from it. He said these words after committing adultery. Nobody but Christ was perfect.

He has to formulate a scientific, psychological, biological and historical significance before atheists will follow him into the realm of religious understanding. Most atheists see the religious as a group of superstitious yokels begging for favors and salvation from a bearded man in the sky. Jordan lays a path through multiple domains to help them discover objective significance where only subjective significance was perceived.
If I had to guess, I'd say that religious thinking is critical to the healthy functioning of a society due to mankind's propensity towards it - and that some systems are better at maintaining order than others, the least of which being those that are freshly concocted (like political theories turned religions -Marxism-). I only think that, as opposed to thinking that Christianity is useless, dangerous relic of a more primitive age, precisely because Dr. Peterson has lead me there.
I don't think he's missing a path for himself. I think he has to make a path large enough for all of us.

Honestly, as a huge fan of Doug Wilson, I really don’t think Peterson was making any kind of claim about The Bible being true to reality. I think he was just saying that our modern culture in America is impossible to conceive of without the context of a culture with a biblical foundation. The ideas and morals that came from the Bible were passed on imperceptibly into every generation and those that think they are moral in and of themselves have not given thought to where the credit should lie. I do hope that God is drawing Peterson into a knowledge and relationship of/with him, but this clip did not lead me to believe that necessarily

But I think the way Peterson framed his view is that it makes the Bible FAR MORE than merely a set of premises, as we see in logic. Rather this statement about the Bible presents it as the BASIS for Logic and Truth!

You can tell Joe Rogan was lost because he didn't interject any commentary. Also he claimed people who believed in the Bible were STUPID but it's hard to say that when the man making the claim" the Bible is the basis of truth", is smart than him.
