He's always said he took a lot from Joni Mitchell when writing this one.Perhaps the key to writing like this is to marinate your brain in some of her work for a while?
@@NikFarr It's in open E tuning, the same as Big Yellow Taxi, but obviously sounds nothing like it. Only discovered this the other day when a lesson of HR by Johnny appeared on the internet
@@Rockremembered Indeed it is. I was commenting more from a perspective of writing something like this, and I think the only way to do that is to a) mess around with alternate/open tunings and b) to study the work of others who have written in them. Learning to play some existing pieces would be helpful, so great point!
I first heard this driving to another state late at night to see my college girlfriend. I pulled over to the side of the road to try and absorb this haunting, melancholic retrospective of hurt. Years later I would think of those long gone days as I walked through City Centre in Manchester, UK on evenings in the rain. A brilliant, evocative song.
Came here because I love this song...I am not a guitarist or even a musician but much appreciate your excellent lesson & subbed...so wish I had learned to play when I was younger......hey ho!
thank you, thank you, thank you Allison. the open "e" tuning never crossed my mind. Not that i would have been able to figure it all out anyway. at last 30 some odd years later i can enjoy playing "Headmaster Ritual". its nice to see you, thanks again!
Love these. Great to see the proper ways to play these incredible songs in tutorial format. One small niggle: try to always play the section just prior to breaking it down, to establish context. Otherwise, the explanation is spot-on. You're a treasure!
Thank you for the lesson... Open tuning is for the few (in spite of being very popular in folk music of many peoples). I've tried open G tuning ("That's the Way", Led Zeppelin), and now I'm learning open E tuning ("The Headmaster Ritual", The Smiths)
Whoa, I'm so excited to see you uploading again. I found your channel only a few weeks ago and thought it was one of so many other channels that WERE. Hope you continue because these are great tutorials.
Um... you're awesome, Allison. Just found you while looking for "What Difference Does It Make?" tutorial. Perfect. Then took a chance and searched your name with "Headmaster Ritual". YES!!! Learning his song has been on my bucket list ever since I saw that video of Johnny demoing Fender amps ❤️ Such a magical song. Your tutorial wasn't out then. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Please bring your band to Texas!
ilgilgg Welp... no time like the present (COVID-19) to woodshed and learn this song. I didn’t finish last time... (2 years ago apparently 🤦🏻♂️). Thanks again for this tutorial!
I own the same guitar "week 39". It's chambered and has a tone to die for. Still has great sustain and play-ability. Good teacher. thanks for not being intimidating.
Its so strange seeing a lady on the other side of the planet teaching this. In the 80's, in Manchester, you guys might as well have been on another planet. :)
This would sound really good through a Roland JC 120. Have you ever played through one? Excellent vid!!! I really appreciate your breakdowns of these songs. You show Marr's complexity and amazing melodic chords. I keep thinking "what is this guy thinking?" He's a real curiosity. Same with Jeff Beck.
You're back!! loving the new look :) Could you make lessons on: 1. Some girls are bigger than others 2. Half a person and honourable mentions: 3. The boy with a thorn in his side? 4. Meat is Murder I'm sorry to sounds so demanding, it's just been so long lol.
This is Awesome! Can you do videos lessons for Sonic Youth? Especially from the Album "Sister". There songs are in alternate tunings and tough to figure out.
@@stevenchampion8137 You can see a video of Marr (a fender "check in video") where he demonstrates how to play it. He plays it in an open E tuning there.
Great lesson! Thanks so much, and it sounds amazing on acoustic too. How would you like to do a lesson for "We share the same skies" by Marr & The Cribs?
Allison, much thanks for your great lessons!! Quick question. When you explain the strum patterns, did you often have to figure them yourself? I have had the good fortune to see the Smiths many times, and Marr I swear, never seemed to use the same patterns, often at times went off and it would sound like a different song!! Love his work but he was impossible at times for me to figure out. That is until I saw your videos! Again many Thanks!!!
Wow. I suck. You re amazing. If I had passed you in the street the last thing on my mind would be "She knows how to play this amazing Smiths song". The first thing through my mind would be "I bet she doesn't know who the smiths are" lol
The pre-chorus is, and always will be, one of my favourite guitar parts of all time.
Johnny Marr is nuts. Never in a million years could I have written something like this.
And he wrote as a "kid". When the Smiths broke up he was only 23. ;-)

I guess it's kinda randomly asking but does anyone know of a good place to watch new series online?

Do belligerent ghouls actually run Manchester schools?

OMG 2 videos in one night. You made my weekend. Welcome back.
These lessons are the best. I always come back to your channel for anything Smiths related. Greets from Belgium 🇧🇪
Absolutely love this song, the main riff and pre-chorus are the best parts for me
Welcome back! We've missed you :)
Its always helpful to hear the section being taught to be played in real time FIRST... makes it way clearer to understand.
This is just a superior job of teaching this song. Wow. Great job, great playing. By the way, so glad Johnny is playing this one live again.
Came here because I love this song...I am not a guitarist or even a musician but much appreciate your excellent lesson & subbed...so wish I had learned to play when I was younger......hey ho!
Hooray! You give the best lessons! Very glad to see you back!
Johnny Marr is a fucking god.... Never in my life I thinked to play with this tuning, omg!!!

Thank you Allisson. An embrace of this Brazilian admirer of his work.
Joy delivered. Thanks so much. Will give me hours of happiness practicing this weekend.
Thanks! One of the riffs of The Smiths that I'd want to play for a long time ago.
Hey, thanks for the help here. I've been watching a few Headmaster tutorials and they're all great for putting the Johnny Marr puzzle together.
Thanks for this seriously I've been looking for years. Welcome back

Having a damn good time learning from this . Once you get the gist you can swap some difficult parts for relative chords . Great lesson. Thankyou .
Best tutor on the web.

Excellent tutorial,I’m a beginner and I’m slowly learning the chords for this, thanks 😊
Brilliant. So glad you're back and did Headmaster!

Ava 124 I second that. The guitar on barbarism is so epic! 1 of my favorites.
It would be so great! looking forward for that video too
Wow! Hats off to you for an easy to follow tutorial. You rock!
I own the same guitar "week 39". It's chambered and has a tone to die for. Still has great sustain and play-ability. Good teacher. thanks for not being intimidating.
Gibson custom Les Paul is it?
It's happened! Thank you, dear Allison!

sounds mint love your channel...
Glad to see you back, thanks for posting these videos. Love that nicely aged les paul btw. Love the cream.
Omg your guitars are beautiful
Johnny used capos all the time, and sometimes open tunings; that's why when I was a kid o could not wprk out smiths songs correctly always
He has played this as open D, capo on the 2nd. Hey presto!
@@stevenchampion8137 You can see a video of Marr (a fender "check in video") where he demonstrates how to play it. He plays it in an open E tuning there.
thank you Allison!

Excellent instruction.

Johnny Marr is a freaking genius :| i still working in the intro .. jaja
Great lesson! Thanks so much, and it sounds amazing on acoustic too. How would you like to do a lesson for "We share the same skies" by Marr & The Cribs?

Can you do a lesson on The Smith’s That joke isn’t funny anymore?
You are amazing! Thank you for all you do!
you are simply perfect ^^
Any advice on the chords that go over the picking?as seen on radiohead's version of the song? Brilliant video amazing teaching!

Any chance for a tone setting?
You're great and good, I have a guitarist like you, I'm a bassist who loves the Smiths
Great videos ! What year is your Les Paul ?
Oh wow! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ this tune! With all these alternate tunings, what key is it in?
Perfect.
In case people haven't seen it yet, Johnny Marr decided to do his own tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/UI96b_bTrnI/v-deo.html
as much as I hate tuning my guitar like this. ILL DO IT FOR THE MUSIC
thank you! :)
why does anyone play the 2 notes that lead into 12:19 (B->C) ?
Nice, but you need to bend that G note on the top E string up to G half-sharp.
You don't mind still doing the Smiths? If you don't girl afraid would be great:)
could you do Shakespeare's sister please
Awesome kid
i wonder what model les paul that is?
custom?
hey queen
So what chorus are you using?
Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble
Johnny Marr was a genius. Challenging, indeed…..
