Thanks for this, took me 15 minutes to make and we've just spent the last few hours at the fire pit enjoying the colors (used 6 pieces of hose!!!) Something to smile about during these weird times we live in.
To those interested in the chemistry: copper, when heated in a flame by itself, gives off the greenish color you see at first. When chlorine is also present in the flame, the emmission will become blue instead. Vinyl tubing is polyvinyl chloride, which gives off hydrochloric acid when it burns. Any PVC plastic will work. The chlorine in the acid vapor gives the pretty, blue color. This is the same principle used in blue fireworks. Chlorine is also used in green fireworks along with barium, which burns white without it. Copper is not used for green, since barium green is much more brilliant. Strontium, used for red, will work without chlorine, but the color will be deeper if it's present.
Oh thank you again! We did this last night at our Easterin' campfire. It was stunning! Everyone enjoyed it tremendously! We put a large piece of cedar with a big branch sticking up and the colorful flames went up the branch too! Really really cool!!!!
Inform yourself about some firework chemistry, there are some salts and stuff you can buy in powder form for sometimes fairly cheap. Throw that in the flame instead (start with small amounts, different ones burn differently, if it sais Oxide in the end it propably burns really well and always only small amounts of magnesium since it burns super bright and might make you blind if you look right into a large flame)
Love your video! Thank you for the tutorial! People's comments on this are ridiculous though! I love what you've done here - very creative & ingenious!
It was pretty awesome when we were 6-8 years old watching ol Mearl’s magic fire. He was our neighbor. An ol wwii vet that was a great friend and neighbor.
Thank you for sharing this! In my neck of the woods we have a camping event we call Easterin'. We have bought that commercial fire colorant but it is so pricey. This is going to be great!
Thanks for the tip! I always just threw in some old copper wires that were damaged and couldn't be used for other projects. But now I have something I can reuse. Thanks again!
That was my first thought, too...until I started to make one on my own and realized very quickly why he did it that way. You want the garden hose to easily slide out (but not too easily) after the fire has burned it long enough for the colors to fade, in order to continue using the copper pipe with a new section of garden hose, to produce colors again...rather than building an entirely new one each time you want to use it. If you pinch the ends too tightly, you won’t be able to get the used section of hose out of the pipe without a lot of work, or by cutting the bottom with a saw. But, I totally agree with you....everything about that giggle was lovable. He’s like your goofy uncle who always has a way to teach you new things by using items around the house, but when you reach high school age you pretend you’re too cool for that stuff now....and claim to be bored....but you’re really not bored, and he knows that too, so he keeps doing his lessons regardless of how much of a dick you’re being, in order to let you feel cool, but still learn from the experiments. Then 10 years later you find yourself in the garage with your little son, doing all of your uncle’s experiments with him, because your uncle passed away, and you’re keeping his memory alive through your own kids -- Or, I’ve just been listening to way too much Country Music lately, combined with quarantine, and also my uncle died last week.
There's been a large amount of comments from people claiming that burning this is harmful for you. Please read the disclaimer in the video description to clarify what I have found from research about this before you do this project.
He was going to make his fire in the dark! He couldn't see if any explosive, toxic or living things were going up in flames and would probably trip over his fire before it got lit. He didn't point out that safety issue.
When I was a kid in Michigan my neighbor used to have magic camp fires when we would go camping and salmon fishing in Michigan. I remember being told when I got older he used copper pipe and garden hose of some sort lol.
Cool!! I definitely plan to try. Any weather conditions recommended? This will be my first time building a fire by myself without any help. Also, what would you recommend besides potassium salts to get the fire more violet/purple? And is it safe to add the copper with potassium salts and strontium nitrate?
8:42 "Ya'don just wanna just lay it down'er ya'catch yer grass on fire...er'burn somebody so a bring it over to *ya'fuckin'* water..." That's what I thought he said for a second. My volume was a little on the low side, it made me laugh. xD
Six oh, my gosh ! Thats what i heard too! Even though i had already read these comments i still heard it clear as day! Lol! Certainly seemed out of character for this wholesome guy! Im sure what he said was "to yer bucket of water." Too funny!
This was really neat. I bought packets to put on a bonfire recently and it was a big hit but of course we couldn't roast food over that one either. So we roasted first and then burned a couple packets. And I agree with the recommendation in your video description. Once in a while is fine just not all the time.
I'm installing vinyl siding on the garage and have a ton of scraps so I decided to try it out. Really surprised at the results. The only thing is the smoke is pretty toxic because of the chlorine but just sit farther away to make sure.
That looks awsome🤩 i wish youd post some more of these videos and, i dont know If you made this type of video yet, i want you to make a grey kind of fire
Interesting. Definitely some risks of toxins, but that is acknowledged. The green/blue are probably from the copper, but I find it interesting that there appears to be potassium present (purple).
Aerochunck Purple also exists in the emission spectrum of copper, as do many other colors. Not to mention many other elements and compounds emit purple, not just potassium.
I just made mine for this weekend but I got a two foot pipe you think I should cut it in half and make two.!? If I cut it into two would there be more color or the same amount
Does the copper tubing chemical reacts to the garden hose in some way? Can it be another type of tubing, like stainless steel? Can't you just throw the hose in and get the affect?
My brother gave me one once, I don't know where he got it but he didn't make it himself. He did say it had to be a Rubber hose. Was yours? Or does vinyl work too?
We have done this for years. we always wait until the marshmallows and smores are done. We never had holes in ours but might have some in the next one.
Copper specifically reacts with the flame to give green/blue hues. Other elements react differently (eg Lithium = bright red, sodium = yellow) but they are harder to access and usually don't come in a form as easily handled and manipulated as a pipe. This is how different coloured fireworks function as well. Don't know about the hose though, sorry.
My brother gave me one once, I don't remember where he got it, I don't think he made it himself, but he said it has to be a Rubber hose. Is that what you used?
_Potassium chloride_ Makes a *Purple* flame. _Magnesium sulfate_ Makes a *White* flame. _Sodium chloride_ Makes an *Orange* flame. _Strontium chloride_ Makes a *Red* flame. _Copper chloride_ Makes a *Blue* flame. _Lithium chloride_ Makes a *Pink* flame. _Copper sulfate_ Makes a *Green* flame.
I had been told that the garden hose needed to be rubber, but is that not true? Was your hose vinyl with the same results or did you have a rubber hose and just forgot to mention it?
CuzKatieSaysSo it must give off hydrochloric acid (or some other volatile chlorine compound) when it burns. Vinyl is PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Any PVC plastic works. Rubber normally does not.
I really doubt it's harmful haha, my science class just recently did this on the bunsen burner. Not only did we burn multiple chemicals, but it was in an enclosed room, specifically the lab. I doubt there are any worries. Sorry this is a bit of a late reply :(
The fire will most definitely release toxins and carcinogens such as benzene and polymer smoke etc... So cook on the fire before you put this in. It probably wouldn't kill you if you cooked on it, but it certainly wouldn't be healthy :)

Ake---->>> Thank you for the info!!
yes thanks
So what I really ought to do is make pack, pods, or stones out of those chemicals and chuck them in the fire?
Why thank you very much. Now I'm gonna just try a piece of PVC inside the 1 inch pipe. Maybe it will last longer than hose.
Wow how else do I get chlorine? And probably not safe to breathe right?
This production quality is fucking immense for a small channel from 2013
This is probably one of my favorite comments on this video ;)
Right?!
lmao righttt
Exactly my though in 2021. I saw 8 years ago and I was amazed.
Now that's what i call a COOL dad, :-D
Oh thank you again! We did this last night at our Easterin' campfire. It was stunning! Everyone enjoyed it tremendously! We put a large piece of cedar with a big branch sticking up and the colorful flames went up the branch too! Really really cool!!!!
WHO DOES THE EDITING AND CAMERA WORK FOR THIS GUY??? this is really high quality. And what camera setup is he using? It's crystal clear.
We've done this for years, but never thought to drill the holes in it, we just let it color out the ends! this is a great tip!
Are you still alive?
Tried it last night. The kids loved it. Only lasted 15 mins or so though. Keep the bucket of water and extra hose handy.
John Fisherman 15 min white that size ?., what happend.if I make it much bigger?, it is going to lasted longer?
Please dont, burning pvc is toxic and thats what makes this blue

Elias, shut up. You nerd.
This feels like a video from the 90s~ very nostalgic for someone that isn't born in that era~
This video really exceeded my expectations. Almost ASMR but it was to interesting to fall asleep to.
Love your video! Thank you for the tutorial! People's comments on this are ridiculous though! I love what you've done here - very creative & ingenious!

Now that is a proper setup for making a video...Prime fast lens with nice blurring background...Well done!
Thanks a lot!
Tried this last night in my small winnewell stove. Fire was amazing!!!
I'm loving the giggle at 3:49. Also why are you not pinching the copper tube while the hose is inside?
He wants to make sure he van get it back out again for reuseability. If you have to make the whole wider again you wanna have some space to work with

OR, yeah...exactly what Elias said, only far more succinctly than I did
Wow! That fire looks very pretty, thanks for the info!!!
Thank you for the heads-up... can't wait to put it in action.
There's been a large amount of comments from people claiming that burning this is harmful for you. Please read the disclaimer in the video description to clarify what I have found from research about this before you do this project.
So no marshmallows?
I wouldn't consider it unless you want some toxins in your system.
Bunni D. Lizzy RAINBOW MARSHMALLOWS😂😂😂
I can imagine replacing PVC with something less toxic but isn't the copper itself toxic?
+Erik Hendrych Only if you eat it
Way too cool. Thanks for the safety issues also. Watched it twice!
He was going to make his fire in the dark! He couldn't see if any explosive, toxic or living things were going up in flames and would probably trip over his fire before it got lit. He didn't point out that safety issue.

That's awesome! 💗😍 What a cool dad!
Brilliant video, thank you for sharing. We will be doing this with our home education group 😊 Really well done x

Lol I just turned my volume down and it does sound like that XD
I heard it too
Six oh, my gosh ! Thats what i heard too! Even though i had already read these comments i still heard it clear as day! Lol! Certainly seemed out of character for this wholesome guy! Im sure what he said was "to yer bucket of water." Too funny!
same lol
Lol i heard it tooooo
What a lovely father and son bonding moment ❤❤❤thank you for sharing!
You are so kind
I’m currently reading twilight and a part talks about driftwood fires, changing color of the fire... and I wanted to see it for myself, haha
Same lol
Definitely doing this on my next camping trip thanks for the vid
Awesome idea and a great instructional video! Thanks!
Very good camera and color grading! Well Done!!!
You’re such a cool dad.
thank uuuu!!!!! I was wondering if I could use the packets on a candle
Love it. thanks. our fav pasttime
lol easier to throw used wrapping paper in. lol
🔥 Love it!!! 🔥 Can't wait to try this!
Hope you like it!
That's way cool. Thank you!
Thank you for this beautiful video and I'll only try this once too much can be bad for you but it is what it is
+Garden warfare Good luck!
nice tip thanks... my kids will love this ...happy new year. :)
Just dont cook smores on that shit.lol
Gamer
That is so cool!!! I'm definitely doing this sometime!! :)
Superb video. I'm doing this!

i did this with some friends and it was awesome
Thanks! I'm planing to build one for this summer
Such power, so amazing
That looks awsome🤩 i wish youd post some more of these videos and, i dont know If you made this type of video yet, i want you to make a grey kind of fire
I’m gunna try this thanks !!
Please do and let me know how it works!
Can you use it more than once
so cool :D thank you for making this video
Totally awesome!!!
Thanks

Aerochunck Purple also exists in the emission spectrum of copper, as do many other colors. Not to mention many other elements and compounds emit purple, not just potassium.
Can you put 2 in there dad?
So cool!
I've done it & it does get noticed!
Yeah it does. When was the last time you did that?
I just made mine for this weekend but I got a two foot pipe you think I should cut it in half and make two.!? If I cut it into two would there be more color or the same amount
Love this!
Awesome fire🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great video. thanks. About how long will the color change last?
Amazing!
Thank you! Cheers!
that is a sweet lip jacket....this guy is legit.
How many times can you do this? Can you load up another hose inside the copper again after the first time?
yes as long as you have more hose you can continue to do this.
Does the copper tubing chemical reacts to the garden hose in some way? Can it be another type of tubing, like stainless steel? Can't you just throw the hose in and get the affect?
Yes it has something to do with the garden hose and the copper pipping that creates a chemical reaction. I have no idea about other methods.
Cool trick.
My brother gave me one once, I don't know where he got it but he didn't make it himself. He did say it had to be a Rubber hose. Was yours? Or does vinyl work too?
Could you make a flame throwing staff with one of these???
so cool
Thanks! Im gonna try this!
DOES IT GIVE OFF A BAD SMELL, THANKS FOR VIDEO SIR
We have done this for years. we always wait until the marshmallows and smores are done. We never had holes in ours but might have some in the next one.
I was thinking that'd be the best thing to do alright!
Thank you
This is so cool!
8:44 i thought he said bring it to your fucken water 😂
surely itd be easier to add liquefied copper to the fire, right? im genuinely asking, im not sure
What can we use instead of gardening hose
Im down with the sickness!!
An easy way to get a colorful fire: try Denarora Flame Color Changing Packets
If my campfire is big, what is the length of the copper pipe i shold use?
How long do you think it can stay in there until the color wears off?
does it have to be a copper pipe? or can it be a diffrent material? and can it be a new hose?
Copper specifically reacts with the flame to give green/blue hues. Other elements react differently (eg Lithium = bright red, sodium = yellow) but they are harder to access and usually don't come in a form as easily handled and manipulated as a pipe. This is how different coloured fireworks function as well.
Don't know about the hose though, sorry.
Do you know a way generate colored smoke, ideally orange, as a distress call?
Wow
Is the hose making toxic smoke?
My brother gave me one once, I don't remember where he got it, I don't think he made it himself, but he said it has to be a Rubber hose. Is that what you used?
You should put more than one in. More colors
How long does this last? (1 piece of hose).
These would be pretty cool to give out to friends and family too :).
Might last an hour or two at most. It's good to have backup pieces of hose so you can replace them instantly to keep the fire looking good.
Thanks! :)
_Potassium chloride_ Makes a *Purple* flame.
_Magnesium sulfate_ Makes a *White* flame.
_Sodium chloride_ Makes an *Orange* flame.
_Strontium chloride_ Makes a *Red* flame.
_Copper chloride_ Makes a *Blue* flame.
_Lithium chloride_ Makes a *Pink* flame.
_Copper sulfate_ Makes a *Green* flame.
Excellent comment!
that was so cool
How long does this have to burn to start getting the color?
How long does this last in the flames?
Hi, may i know how long will the colour of the fire last?
Does this work with any garden hose?
I guess u get it in packets where can i get that???
How long does it last?
I had been told that the garden hose needed to be rubber, but is that not true? Was your hose vinyl with the same results or did you have a rubber hose and just forgot to mention it?
CuzKatieSaysSo it must give off hydrochloric acid (or some other volatile chlorine compound) when it burns. Vinyl is PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Any PVC plastic works. Rubber normally does not.
That's easy....magic mushrooms. :)
I'm an electrician and always have scrap wire... Gonna have to try throwing a wire ball or something in my fire sometime.
thanks dad
I really doubt it's harmful haha, my science class just recently did this on the bunsen burner. Not only did we burn multiple chemicals, but it was in an enclosed room, specifically the lab. I doubt there are any worries. Sorry this is a bit of a late reply :(
I've got a lighter that makes a green fire so I think it's safe
Your science class room is required to have ventilation.
Sony Delha breathing in those chemicles is bad mkay
but if your camping; what if you want to cook on your fire? would it be safe to eat?
To be safe, eat before you put in the copper tube. Simple as that.
The fire will most definitely release toxins and carcinogens such as benzene and polymer smoke etc... So cook on the fire before you put this in. It probably wouldn't kill you if you cooked on it, but it certainly wouldn't be healthy :)
What is it in the hose that creates those Color’s?
Read my description. I go more in detail there.
