This is a love to view vid its funny you dropped this 1 i come up with a silly but useful hack for my bic use enough length of gorilla tape to seal the metal of the lighter to waterproof it period and being gorilla tape like you say 1001 uses but resealable too.
Let you haters be you motivators. Hard work beats talent , when talent doesn’t work hard. You are always working hard and honest. Follower for life sir. God bless you and your loved ones.
Keep the skills coming!!! As far as the last vid; just have the nah sayers 'use' the skills they learned from the other so called bushcraft videos in the real backwoods and see how they do.
Thanks buddy, Started to take mining classes first of week. I came home and found my wife very, very, sick. Had to rush her to hospital. She is on a vent right now. My children have sit with her so I could get the classes took to start my new job. And when I'm done I drive straight to hospital and stay with her until I ve got to leave again. Your videos and a few others shows have kept my mind busy. You help so many in ways with your videos, yet you touch others in other ways and don't even know you do. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you.....
Congratulations on your marriage! I listened to your info video of your changing and growing business. Wishing you the best in whatever direction you take. I appreciate your service, skills, and teaching and entertaining abilities!!
Thank you sir. Keep on keeping on. Who cares what they say. You’re a great practical teacher. You’re awesome oh and congrats on your wedding. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Cpl, as always, I appreciate your simple, straightforward approach and your candor. Congratulations on your wedding and your new bride. As a long time subscriber, going back to when you had about twenty thousand under your belt, I'm glad you're doing these mid-week videos about kits and skills. That's the kind of material that drew me to your channel and has kept me here for so long. Please keep them coming.
A useful thing I tend to keep around is a tiny bit of wound dollar store jute twine because it takes up no room, weighs nothing, but can be a good extender/birdsnest and squishes easily into an Altoids tin.
Excellent video as always. My fire starter kit, also includes a Bic lighter and Ferro rod. I also have a plastic waterproof prescription bottle filled with dryer lint soaked in WD 40. A small piece about the size of two bits gives me around 2-3 minutes of burn time. I also have a waterproof plastic container of homemade "fire cookies". My grandson named them, when we made them together. Cotton rounds dipped in a solution of melted candle wax, WD40, and food colouring to help find them if dropped. These are ideal if it's wet outside as they also float and burn. Burn time is around 5-6 minutes per cookie.
People got caught out camping in Colorado. It Snowed a foot. So, a video about that would be great. Like, winterize your truck and Be prep for ice and snow survival.
Shawn, thank you. Thank you for your channel. Thank you for you being you. You are authentic, you are sincere, you are dedicated and devoted to what you show and do. You are ever ready and eager to share your experience, opinion, skill and knowledge down to the minute detail. You don‘t say buy this, buy that. You give solid feedback and opinion, but leave the audience/viewer to decide…“something to think about“. You are tireless to show things step by step again and again; fire, knots, water, shelter, builds … and always they are a way but never the way. Keep it up! Best instructor ever!
Thanks for all you've shown and taught us over the years. I'm a longtime subscriber and have gained so much knowledge and many skills by watching your videos. Clear, simple instructions that are filmed well and easy to follow. It blows my mind how ANYONE could dog on you for that. Thank you for your time. Time is the one thing we never get back and you've decided to spend yours by furthering our community. Sincerest gratitude to you, Sir!
Always appreciate your take on what is needed without all the fluff, Son and i practiced all this skills you talked about in the video this past weekend camping. He is a huge Fan.
On your bic lighter if u attach a simple wine Cork to few inches of string, add your gorilla tape around base it will float.. also Cork can be used as a fire starter in an emergency so can the string & tape..
😂 the cinematography when you throw the lighters in the bucket of water… alway enjoy your videos. Learned many things from you. Thank you and keep it up! 👍🏽
Thanks again, I like the idea that we can use something for more than one purpose like duct tape, and it's definitely less messy than cotton balls and Vaseline. and it is always wet in my woods. so an extender is important for PNW.
Thank you Shawn for another excellent video with perfect explanation of the how and why.. Again congratulations to you and the misses for a happy, long, and passionate marriage..be the perfect team and conquer any and all obstacles. Happy life. ❤
I remember learning this from your previous videos but the refresher is great. I really like the K.I.S.S. method I have followed it for years. I look forward to seeing your videos on the bank line as a primary cordage. As always a very informative video, and thank you.
Cpl Shawn Kelly, Outstanding Video AF and Information. If Its Not Broken Don't Fix It. Thank You for all Your Hard Work and Sharing Your Time and Knowledge and Wisdom and Experience and Passing On The Craft. Tim L.
The exact ferro rod I bought, nice! I like to use a tool shaprener as my striker to save my blades AND have a extra sharpener in my kit. Something akin to the "Corona Garden tool sharpener" but be careful because it can bite into your ferro rod pretty hard lol.
I could totally make that. I have all the items; I just need to put them together like that! Sweet baby Jesus loves you, Corporal’s Corner! Juuuuuust like that! 😊
I was really looking forward to this video, thank you for making and sharing your knowledge! Definitely something we all need to learn and carry. Definitely rewatching this video. As always, looking forward to your next video Corporal.
Brother facts are men like us we are a different breed few will understand what I mean about this but we never did what we did for the simple fact that we hated what was in front of us we did what we did because we love the Brother to our right and the Brother to our left and because we love the ones behind us . Bring this same mentality to your UA-cam channel
great video. i just start with hiking/camping becous im out and fishing. and your video gives great tips and advice. realy enjoy watching. and after have seen few videos that you use victornox ranger 78 i think it was, that made me to buy one and it is realy great pocket knife with that saw. i have learn new things from your video. 🙂
Thanks for the video. I use the Exotac full lighter sleeve. Had it over 5 years, it holds up to daily carry and keeps the Bic dry and ready when I’m soaking wet in the driving rain or snow.
If it's windy you could shave Fanwood shavings onto the sticky side of duck tape to keep them from being blown away and help the duck tape get kit by lighting the shavings with the ferro rod instead of going to the trouble of tearing it into thin straps to expose the fibers.
Thank you. I truly have no survival skills. This short video breaks down the why how and the demonstration is spot on. Short and sweet and to the point. Keep them coming
Love all these videos. I do have a suggestion. Get a clipper lighter same as a bic one and done but you can replace and remove the flint for drying or replaceing flint and there refillable. They float the same there usually the same cost but it's a completely renewable source.
Hello sir... personally I love how raw your videos are... I couldnt help but chuckle at throwing the lighters in the pot... if you revisit this I would suggest tossing a zippo in also lol... I am curious why no fresnel Lense... I carry one in many places because they are light and cheap... I would like to find some of better magnification if you know of any... I have 3x
This kit is close to where we ended up. We had two rather large fire kits that were a test bed around the family BBQ pit. Many brands of butane lighters and several DIY firestarters were in the kits. There is one thing you may depend on in the Philippines, high humidity and moisture-laden materials. We put together a large collection of items so our young troops could learn by doing what works best for them. Slowly, the kits shrank to what works. We do have some heat-sealed magnesium powder for those really stubborn situations and I personally have my magnesium bar because it has not failed me.
Forgot to tell you congratulations! Wishing you both all the best. As a former professional smoker. If your Bic gets wet you can run the striker wheel down your pants leg a couple of times and it will start working again. Just make sure some pressure is applied.
I Gorilla tape a loop of paracord to the Bic so that I can spin it on my finger to dry and then use the tape for fuel. The loop makes it easier to pull the lighter out of a pack or pocket.
Any time that I go into the woods I always carry at least : 1 zippo , 1 bic and I keep a small ferro / magnesium on my keyring . I also carry a folding knife in my pocket , a full tang field knife on my hip , and a razor blade in my wallet . I also carry two bandanas , 40 / 50 feet of #36 tarred bank line and a compass . That's just my loadout for hiking. I carry a little bit more when I am camping . My grandfather was a depression era farm boy and my father was a marine , they drilled it into my head to always be prepared.
As always, great tips and advice. This pretty much demonstrates the contents of my fire kit with some exceptions. I also carry a bright orange, waterproof match safe that contains several storm proof UCO matches that burn like mini road flares and a few firestarter plugs somewhere close at hand. The nice things about the waterproof match safe is, it does float and it does keep the matches dry. Just make sure to keep a match striker inside so one has a dry striking surface handy if needed in an emergency. The ability to make fire with confidence and quickly cannot be overstated. Oh, and congrats on getting married!
All your vids are great and this is one of the best. I like to know what my options are and this certainly answers that question, endless opportunities and possibilities if we know where to look. Thanks for another outstanding video on how to survive in the wild, good luck and keep up the good work.

Well heck! Even if you ran out of lighter fluid in the Bic lighter, you can still ignite the fatwood shavings from the lighter’s spark!!!
yep everything works together
These med week videos gives me something to watch waiting for my daughters school bus
🙏🏻 Congratulations on your marriage!
Always enjoy your awesome videos. Keep it up and stay gold 👍
Ha! I just bought those bic covers this morning. Much cheaper than the Exotac. I am glad to see that they work!
Thank you for the video!

Keep being you and keep doing what you are doing

I really like my Exotac lighter cover. Keeps it dry, floats and keeps the button from neing pressed and degassing.
I've copied your basic kit and use it often... It has never let me down

Great refresher with a cheerful presentation. :)
You can also go to the cosmetics section in most department stores, and buy a makeup pouch to carry a fire kit in.
Simple, down to the point, and simply making sense.
Love your no nonsense approach.
I was really looking forward to this video, thank you for making and sharing your knowledge! Definitely something we all need to learn and carry. Definitely rewatching this video. As always, looking forward to your next video Corporal.

even better if you can get your hands on a clipper junior, the smaller version
Great video as always. Thanks for all the great content.
