Well, I tried out a chilly night of stealth camping in a culvert under a road. This is purely for entertainment purposes! Please don't go into a culvert, drain or sewer! This one was safe due to the time of year and the weather forecast. There was no risk of rain or flooding.
This was a trial run camping in one of these, so it was a learning experience for me haha.

Its a pretty haunting thought that wherever you are, anywhere in the world, Steve Walis could be just feet away from you, camping!

During the winter, yeah, that might be a possibility, during the summer where I am at the moment we have too many snakes that would be trying to make home the same sort of places.
Hahaa.. good one 😆 watch over your shoulder. He might be anywhere

Long time ago I was a Navy Recruiter and I met a young man walking down the road from my station after getting finished PTing and I asked him if he knew where the Navy recruiting station was and he told me yes so I asked him to jump in the car and show me...long story short he became one of my DEPers. He was always early for our weekly PT and one day I asked him if he needed a ride home because it was beginning to rain and he told me he was homeless and lived in the storm drain near the road I first met him on. I offered him a place to stay at my house, totally not allowed by the Navy, but he politely refused and said he was doing just fine where he was. I told him to prove it and he took me to his storm drain and it was actually very nice, similar to some of the hunting shelters I used to stay at when I hunted in Alaska. When he left for bootcamp he asked me if he could store his camping stuff in my shed at my place and he would come get it when he got to his A school. Very nice young man, you would not know by looking at him that first day he was homeless and living in a storm drain.
Beautiful
@Omertà Don83 I asked him to prove it out of concern for his living conditions...I found lot of people I worked with to get into service down played thier circumstances worried it would affect thier enlistment process...I wanted to make sure his situation was not needing any outside assistance.
Was not calling him a lier or anything, he understood my intentions.
@Omertà Don83 I loved being in the Navy, it was hard at times but I have great memories with great friends over seas in many different countries. If its not too late maybe you could still get you a piece...
@Omertà Don83 yeah...Asthma is a tough one to work around. No waivers for that.
Wouldn’t he have to have a home address to even get in the military so how?
When I was 16, I ran away from home and spent two weeks homeless in Seattle. I set up camp in a storm drain (I know, it NEVER rains in Seattle) and found an incredible amount of support from a fellow group of drifters. They taught me a lot. It was a simpler time then. Eventually, I got found out and sent back home. This takes me back

🤣
This, 100%, this. Also, if the culvert was say, 20 feet long (just estimating) Setup the cot in the middle, or roughly 10 feet in. Setup the tarps with the picture of the opposite end. This would serve multiple functions: with the heater in the middle, it would keep it warmer. Also this would make this spot further from the entrances. Second I would get some wood and set it up in a + or X shape just inside the tarp. Then wrap some string through it so the tarp didnt flap as much in the wind. Looking down a dark hole at night would reveal less perhaps if the tarp was also dark brown or black.

Have to admit I was homeless years ago but much younger ... it was some of the best times I can remember. Something about self preservation and finding a way to survive that really makes a person feel alive. I’m grateful to own my own home now but think of those times often.
Homeless THEN homeowner. For many in Australia (we haven't had a decent housing crash for a while), it's home "ownership" (read: mortgage) followed by homelessness. People buying $300,000 homes for a million dollars and expecting the market to increase. Sheer lunacy.
Hopefully in your area house prices are normal. We live in frustrating times in the Sydney area if yoh want to live under 4 walls and own it.
@@nickhayley Nope!..Here in california the prices for an average house is shameful...You would feel bad for forking over the money for a house that looks like a cheesebox.

My wife and I lived in a motel for a few months when we were both unemployed. If we had failed to find work just 1 month longer, we would have been out of home and looking for a nice bridge somewhere. Proud to say I've been with Steve since his early days. This guy has some of the most original content on UA-cam. Its just such a weird niche. Stealth Camping. Lol. Genius.
Also edit: Next time put two layers of tarps. One way down at the end of the tunnel to absorb the wind, and you don't have to listen to the annoying tarp while you sleep. And the second one near you, it won't suck in and out now and provides an extra layer
@Hyperion 666 I'm sorry Steve is blocking up your favourite storm drains
I watcha. Few of these, mostly car/van camping, the people do it by choice so they can travel.. they work from their laptop, the still shower, they still do everything other people do, and they travel, one travels with her dog in a Prius. Sounds good to me..
If I wasn’t a regular viewer of your videos, I’d think this is a video of how a homeless guy takes shelter in the winter.
Lol it still shows you though
This camping kills the homeless guy.
Thank you for commenting on my thoughts
As a homeless guy, i find that if you keep yourself sane and useful.. there will nearly always be someone with a floor for you to sleep on.
Barring that, and some ethical flexibility.. you'll nearly never need to worry about much.
Food is free. If you can take it during the morning busy hours. And if you get caught, jail gives you three hot meals and a rack to rest on. A shower. Cable tv. New friends.
Finding food pantries is easy. Winter clothing and blankets are often provided for us. With the extra clothes, you can just ghetto rig the tent or enclosure to weatherproof it.
Get some spray paint and camouflage your rent or area. Don't leave footprints for others to see. Don't litter. Don't "look" homeless. Don't ask for change.
And done. If you look and act like the average person, you'll be treated as such.
Sleep well, fellow humans. :)
Oh... And i guess you might wonder how i posted this.
Cell phones are free. Ask a friend of they have an old one they don't need. Most people do. Wifi is open and fast in many places. Charge up whenever you can. Get afree. Calling app. Chat with friends to keep sane. I guess i can't really tell you how easy it is.
Go downtown to the biggest city - clean dishes for a few bucks.
Look around for good stuff - need a glass? Club district during busy hour. Someone always leaves behind something. Wash that.
Need food? Peoplewatch. Oftentimes a kid won't eat theirs, picky eaters that they are. Mom throws it away? A few chicken nuggets and some fries? Better than starving. Dig in that trash, foo. Never take something you didn't see personally get thrown away.
Do favors. Run to the store. They'll give you a dollar and a few cigarettes.
Go to the smoking area behind the restaurant, chat up the employees. See if they're in need of a cook or dishwasher. Off the books, untaxed.
I was just waiting for the man eating dinosaur to come walking through the storm drain, LOL. 🤣 Reminded me of the Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom movie, LOL. 😆
praying for you Steve. All our love from Connecticut.

I’ve found shelter twice in my life in a storm drain. Once in the Sonoran desert while hitchhiking and it suddenly started snowing and raining this was in Mexico. Other time was below zero Minneapolis. Opened grate to keep people out and crawled maybe 100 feet back in to a turn and set up sleeping spot and was much warmer in there. I know im 3 years late and by no means a stealth camp expert...after the 3rd or 4th time watching this video over the years, I think a moving blanket or some kind of medium thicknesses blanket would have worked better than the tarp. With the 100lb magnets holding them up, would have kept in the heat, noise and light and kept out the wind! Maybe try it in a future video! Love the content Steve, still watching all of your videos!
Next up: Stealth camping in the back seat of a random stranger's car. "Alright, it sounds like we're in the driveway and they have gone into the house now. Before I set up my sleeping bag, it's time for a Step 2. I'll be out of here before they leave in the morning if all goes to plan." On another note, some type of black cloth blanket would have probably been better for the culvert and wouldn't crinkle with the wind. Wouldn't let light through, either. Actually, a black blanket supported by magnets on both sides would mean that you wouldn't have to worry about the wind or turning the light off every time a vehicle passed. They wouldn't be able to see even a small amount of light coming out of the culvert, either. The side closest to the road could be sealed with the most magnets. A small 1/4" block of plywood maybe 1' x 1' or 2 x 2 would help provide a level space on top of the corrugations for the heater and such. Of course wood is flammable, so you'd never something flame resistant to put in between the heater and the wood.
More like under the car. "Now, we have to be very careful not to oversleep, the consequences of that would be disastrous as they drive over me."

When we were teens, we used to smoke cigarettes and weed in a culvert that had a constant stream, we took 2x4s and a piece of plywood and made a platform across it. We also has a weighted coffee can with a rope where we hid our stash under the water where it ran out of the pipe.(in the deep spot)
Me and my friends did a similar thing in a storm drain when we were kids. We got a chair and a wooden pallet down there and it had raised concrete platforms on each side. All we ever did was smoke weed and drink stolen beers down there. Good times!
I did the same with friends but we didn't smoke we just thought it was cool running around underground yelling at ppl like IT the movie. Plus in my city the sewer system has amazing graffiti all alone the walls. It's about as wide as the street
Cool
@ripper right what did you do those three days for food and water?
Are you me? We did the exact same things growing up. We had a whole base in this one system near our houses.
Steve could do voice narrating for novels. would listen to his auidobooks all day
Steve absolutely has a great, commercially marketable voice!
This
Thank you Steve for that video and every other video
I completely agree! He would be a phenomenal voice actor! I'm betting that Jess agrees with us! 👍
Good radio voice for sure.
This is the first video i ever watched from you Steve *cannot believe its been 3 years!). Got hooked on your content after that, always brings the warm fuzzies looking back on Crazy Neighbor and how epic of a duo you two are. He will always be in our memories!
Who would ever possibly have anything bad to say about Steve? He's just a wholesome dude doing whacky camping trips and sharing them with us.
I think the only bad thing that i heard someone talk about Steve is that he should have eat more vegetables
Yes, so true his tips and stealthy camping makes me believe he may have been playing and camping in his smart neighbor's yard too much. We all know how it is when you can't pay for all that propane, tarps, sleeping pad, O sorry big boy bed. Is this why you leave such nicely made sleeping spots all over the place? To lazy after a long day of biking to set up a real camp that you take down and continue on. I am all for the adventure but you are not really doing it like the rest of the woodsman and woman. Dude it will be there in the spring ???? WTF Steve
There have been people on previous videos criticizing him for no damn reason! Just because they read an article or watched a video about him and didn't like how he was living his life. Probably people who are just jealous that they can just go camp whenever and wherever they want.
In this world we live in, there’s always going to be some idiots whose life’s work is to complain, insult and/or demean others; quintuple that when it involves Social Media.
I know people have been commenting this before but it's true. You really are the Bob Ross of stealth camping/outdoor videos!
Lol
Exactly
Yes! I had that same thought watching this one
If you find yourself contemplating living in a storm drain because of high rent and devalued currency, it might be time to reevaluate Biden as president.
When he said "magnets" I knew this man was seeing things on a whole different level.
Steve, back in the day we used to hangout where you are in this video in the late 80s. There were some boards and logs in the culverts from other people who used to do the same thing. We used to just have a good time and stay away from everyone like when we did forts in the woods. It was peaceful and Noone knew, it was what almost no other kids had, it was a little taste of freedom.
16:40 how could anyone be mean to this man. he’s just a fun guy who loves to camp. he ain’t bothering nobody
seeriously whoever got a problem with steve has a problem with me ... keep on keepin on steve .. we have your back .... plus your awesome ..stay true brother

As a reward for sleeping in a big pipe I'd love to see a Christmas special or something where Steve stealth camps in a nice hotel room in a tent and gets some step 2s brought to the door by room service 😀👍
Hah I don’t think he would like it to much
Unless maybe he camps on the roof?
@@se7encureton I've been locked out on a hotel roof before (I was working there at the time). It was really peaceful while I waited to be rescued. It would be perfect for a stealth camp Lol
@@erinmckenna5538 I think so too.
Would look totally cool to !
Or like so of the guys did at Forrester school when they were in the rappelling amd rope thing. Set up ropes and climbed up above the roof over Headmaster office with madrasses and all . Camped one night there ,the next night above the garage same way. Mre and such they had. Most nervous ive been i was standing on the porch there checking from ground they got all up, when door went up, Headmaster came out, just a few second nervous chat whilst they were feets in the air above him with all gear. Mission Impossible moment that was.
" dum di da du di dam, Camping at the Ritz .." .
Driving through the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, “why do I smell pizza? “
Lol 🤫😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
😂👍
HA HAAA!😂
Couple of guys out having some road beers late at night stop to piss: I smell pizza? Yeah, me too. WTF!
Steve your wit and wisdom are truly Delightful.
Up next: Steve builds a toilet paper fort in Walmart and stealth camps in it overnight
EDIT: If Steve can find a 24 hour store, this can be done without breaking the law 😅
The ultimate stealth camp! 😂
Absolutely stellar! That's the best idea on here so far. Let's make it happen! He literally have a supermarket at the tip of his fingers.
Camps on top of a skyscraper. Camps in an airplane bathroom. Camps in the bed of some guy's truck. Camps underneath someone's trailer. Camps in the back of a police car. Canps in prison
lol...
Homeless shelter stealth camping
Just told my girl "Camping with Steve just uploaded a new video!"
We're now eating our dinner watching him. The dude is so relaxing. ❤️🤣😎⛺🚙
7:28 “Propane, propane. It’s time to start the flame”. Trailer park boys reference?!? Lol. Steve is the best.
I noticed that too, I hope it was a reference to tpb
Exactly what I was thinking
Had to revisit this classic after doing some urbex through tunnels running 50+ ft deep under the Pacific Coast Highway. Some corrugated pipe and concrete, but mostly hewn from solid rock! Definitely no road noise! The western end of each tunnel opened onto the beach and sunset views. Great graffiti in some. Picked up what trash I could. Way too much water flow currently to get horizontal, but maybe some dry summer night...
When the car parked up that was the most tense I’ve ever felt watching a camping video.
love his videos because he never even puts that suspenseful stuff in the title and you know none of it is staged just by his integrity.
@@Phillyation exactly right! Steve is such a dude.
Somebody else said that was #Post10 He was driving by and sensed a clogged drain.
Things would have really changed if that car throughout a dead body LOL!! How in the hell would you explain that to authorities.
"I could build a fort." Steve is like a whimsical druid.
You can take the ‘like a’ out of that comment for it to read more accurately.
@@Interlunar1 ok mom
@@Chocolatepain I was joking. I meant Steve actually is a whimsical druid.
That would be an interesting convo with the cops trying to convince them you're not homeless and in there for fun
all he has to do.. Is show them, his UA-cam channel.
"No, I'm _professionally_ homeless"
"I'm just a guy who's a hobo for fun" - Stevetama
They just have to look at his camera lol
They would be like buddy you're either homeless and we are taking you to a shelter or you're nuts and we are taking you to a hospital ...
My snoring volume makes any sort of stealth sleeping scenario basically impossible 😂 you’d hear me for miles
Have you seen the one with Crazy Neighbor sawing logs in the cave?
All I can do is imagine “beautiful wife’s” face when Steve’s like just going to spend a night in a drain hole 😂😂
Wife here: Very little surprises me at this point, haha. Thanks so much for supporting Steve!
@@jessh4417 tell Steve we love his videos! Such a down to earth, fun guy! Cowabunga!
"pipe"... there's a BIG difference :)
BF, he wants to build a fort with shelves in a big culvert! Lol
"Whatcha doin down there Steve?", "Oh, i'm just cooking circles on a circle inside this circle." lol
You know Steve is a honest dude because he said he's 5' 11. You never hear of 5' 11 dudes because they all say they're 6' lol
Haha ya... I came up an inch short dammit
@@campingwithsteve
that's what she said
Honest or he's actually 5-10
Well, I myself AM 6’ exactly, but all that would get me is this:
“Ha ha, Steve, I’m one inch taller than you (bangs head) OUCH!!”
Legend has it steve Wallis is 9ft tall and shoots lightning from his eyes! And thunderbolts from his ass!
He’s saving that for the xmas special 100% 🤙🏽
You call your neighbor crazy but who’s the one sleeping in a culvert with wind and worms! Love your channel! 🎉😂
"Double layered tortilla pizza made in a culvert" You can only hear glorious phrases like this one, when you are camping with Steve
I know what the kids are getting for dinner tomorrow night.
Lmao I love it.
Steve should’ve came out of the drain and starting yelling pay the troll toll to the car 🤣
LOLLLLL that's hilarious!
Confound your lousy toll, troll!
Trolls live under bridges, not in drains
@@keekwai2 cool, didn’t ask
You gotta pay the troll toll to get into this boys hole... You gotta pay the troll toll to get in.
His wife could never send him to the doghouse. it would be a vacation.
Honestly if Homeless had access to youtube, there'd be grates on every ditch in California for hostile design.
😂🤣😂🤣😂
You right 🤣🤣🤣🤣
THAT'S ONE WAY TO GET OUT OF PAYING CHILD SUPPORT🤣🤣
If the wife sends u to the doghouse u are the wife
