This is THE voice of country music. I grew up listening to and singing his music with my dad. It never grows old because it is heartfelt honest good music. There have been many pretenders to the throne, and those who say Hank Sr. holds the title but in my opinion, Merle Haggard is the true KING of county music...
I'm sorry, but Merle is the greatest country singer of all time. I mean think about it, consider all the songs he written. Then put his awesome vocals on top of that. And, the man has lived what he sings. It just don't get no better.
i went to see Merle back in 85 in houston and he was so sick from everything (been there) that he was really sick! in 1996 i saw him in austin and he jammed! it takes a real man to up and say he has a problem!
my friends and i used to listen to this live album in high school on cassette tape over and over in 81 through 84. It finally wore out and then the CD age came about. We looked for it for years and about 6 months ago my friend found it. It only took us 29 years to relive some of those great memories. This song is absolutely one of my favorites from the Hag. Thank you for the great memories.
His music and a few other greats kept me drunk for ten weeks straight from sunup 'til sundown back in the summer of ' 89. Don't forget the likes of Hank Williams, the Carter family and the singing brakeman Jimmy Rodgers who started it all. Long Live Merle! There will never be another.
@jfsj513 ; I also am NOT a country music person, but I was introduced to this song through a movie and have come to love it!!!, If you have never seen Bronco Billy, SEE THE MOVIE!! It is my favorite Clint Eastwood movie! Clint Eastwood was onced asked if there were a single movie that showed his philosophy of life, and his response was that if he had to name just ONE movie that it would be Bronco Billy. The movie is JUST PURE FUN!!
I was there in the upper tier when the Hag performed Okie From Muskogee and everyone was bouncing to the beat. The whole upper deck was springing massively up and down when the announcer warned us to stop because they thought the stadium would collapse. The music they call country today is a cross of rap and crap. Nothing like Merle Playing while Driving my Peterbilt thru Bakersfield, Ca.
Took me 40 years to meet a good woman, married or with someone else 'n all. all good things come to those who wait. But God damn nobody ever told me I'd have to wait that long! It was worth every ginsoaked minute!
@silverfox4743 Got into Merle after seeing Bronco Billy when I was a young teen back in the 80's also. Misery & Gin got me hooked. Now I've have about 8 Haggard albums & CD's and been lucky enough seen him twice Live.
brotherhamlet - this is probably my favorite haggard live post on the entire internet. I just wanted to thank you for contributing. The man was in the midst of a very long 'prime' at this time. Thanks again.
@submarinenavycook I had some surgery back in the 80's and rented "Bronco Billy" and have loved the movie ever since. I even love the travelling music----whenever they hit the road, and the song Cowboys and Clowns and Bronco Billy, both by Milsap there isn't ANYTHING about the movie that I don't like!!----------Merle H. has the perfect voice for Misery and Gin, and it fits perfectly into the movie, also I love Clint Eastwood------so for me it is the PERFECT FUN movie!!------for all time!!!!!
Those puffy winter vests in the late 70's and early 80's really saved on shoulders with the guitars. Can't wait till those come back into style! and who is coming next is Brent Amaker and The Rodeo. Look them up here on youtube. Move over Alabama! Here comes The Rodeo!
If this song were any better people would be jumping from buildings. It's insanely amazing..and I',m a pro heavy metal guitarist. My father and I use to play this song. Hag forever!
I'm a Country-Folk-Singer and the only people I try and compete with are Calvin Russell, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson
Its not the singers....its the producers...Its what they THINK we want to hear...so they make the singers and writers kick out certain types of MAINSTREAM songs....MAINSTREAM music...or their idea of MAINSTREAM....
Seems to me like modern country little pop tarts trying to compete with brittany spears and them when there really is no need. But please, my guess is totally educated being a anglo Irish fella in the UK. All I know is, this song rules. I can listen to Merle and Waylon all day.
cause it makes money thats the only reason plus people in the last 30 years hasn't went threw anything to make them sad and sing from the heart like these people has everyone has had it easy since ww2
Waylon, Willie, Merle, Johnny, Paycheck, and oh yes David Allan Coe, those are the REAL COUNTRY artists. I'm very dissapointed in you Nashville. Somebody please tell me what the hell went wrong with country.
@bfhnc copy that. but the fact is nobody will cause thats not whats selling. if they cant put their music on 5 different radio stations then they dont wanna sing it. i dont even listen to the radio anymore. i hav my cds "the hag" "hank sr greatest hits" "this is great country 88 songs" thats it! ...oh and my johnny cash vinyls.
@bfhnc The young singers are lead around by the record companies and peer pressure to produce product not art. That has been most of the position since the 90's. In fact i found it disgusting for Nashville to do their tribute to Johnny Cash after his passing when they pretty much had turned their back on him for working with rock musicians. Hell I had kids who wanted garth brooks cd's in the 90's and they had no idea who johnny cash was.
It's weird, I tell people all the time that I hate country, but I really don't mind this. I think what I actually hate are people singing about tractors.
Well..You dont have to worry about your tractor cheatin on you with your best friend, brother, dad, sister, or cousins.. & some girls love a moolight tractor ride
this is a real musician. no stupid effects, no smoke, no dancers. just a guy who is talented enough to get up and sing.
Thanks for saying that
Love from Ireland ❤
merle haggard is the king of country thumbs up if you agree

I'm sorry, but Merle is the greatest country singer of all time. I mean think about it, consider all the songs he written. Then put his awesome vocals on top of that. And, the man has lived what he sings. It just don't get no better.

"one by one, as they fall, soon there be no Heroes at all", this is a very sad day....
The words of this song are absolute perfection. This is my favorite country song of all time.
The greatest country song ever written or sung. Period.
This world is a sad place without merle Rip
Her life story, mine the same, we both lost love and only have ourselves to blame. What a powerful line. Love Merle Haggard.
I grew up listening to legends like Merle. Classic country is embedded in my soul and roots.
i went to see Merle back in 85 in houston and he was so sick from everything (been there) that he was really sick! in 1996 i saw him in austin and he jammed! it takes a real man to up and say he has a problem!
Weren’t we all back in 85 ?
Wherever you are now? I am continue loving your music.God bless you there in heaven.

Those puffy winter vests in the late 70's and early 80's really saved on shoulders with the guitars. Can't wait till those come back into style!
I went to the Anaheim concert with my friends it was the best show the upper level was hopping we all were as excited as Johnny Paycheck

As many stated, no one has even been close to Merle’s ability. He was and still is incredible
i missed the greatest era in music.but,i m enjoying it now
Sing on, Lucas!! Enjoyed hearing you sing. You definitely have a career in music. You have a real good stage presence too. Very nice.

One of Hag's best songs
Love how Merle and Bonnie walked together to the stage!
Great on all time Rip
“Looking’ at the world through the bottom of a glass, all I see is a man who’s fading fast”
What a line. This whole concert is just awesome.
I was there in the upper tier when the Hag performed Okie From Muskogee and everyone was bouncing to the beat. He was Great 👍
Zero fricks given. Came in and opened up with a slow drinking song. Bad ass.
Took me 40 years to meet a good woman, married or with someone else 'n all. all good things come to those who wait. But God damn nobody ever told me I'd have to wait that long! It was worth every ginsoaked minute!

There are some others, to be honest. But they were all written and sung by Merle Haggard. ;-)
