  • This poor bride of mine had a terrible shock when she ordered her dress online. We had to find a new dress and fit it to her the week of her wedding. Watch me put boning in this corset as I tell you the story.

I had this some years ago, when I was making wedding dresses. A girl turned up on my doorstep in tears with a dress in her arms. It was a cheap online purchase that didn't match the photographs. Luckily I had a bit more time than you had, to help her!

Thank you!! I'm working SOO hard on it. I want it to be visually beautiful, something sewists can learn from, but also enjoyable to listen to. 🥰 It's a new ERA!! Lol

Awesome & sweet story. ❤❤❤ I can only imagine how amazing you felt. I had a similar story but not a nightmare order like your poor gal. My brides father took a turn for the worst & the wedding was moved up a yr. It wasn’t likely that he could make the original date. The shop ware she ordered her gown hustled & got the date moved up & the dress in, but with only a little over a wk to alter it. I’ve sewn for this young lady since her 1st school dance so the plan was for me to do her dream wedding dress. She called me apologetically explaining that w/ all their help getting the dress moved up that maybe they should do the alterations… giving them the business. I understood & told it surely wasn’t a problem but if she needed me I was a text/ call away!! She’s a bigger gal w/ curves & had taken my advice ordering a lgr size… better to have a “take- in than re-invent the wheel, right!! & now with so little time really important. She went for 1 fitting. It did need taken in a bit, the shoulders pulled up, sleeves & skirt hem & bustle. Pretty much what you might expect. It was also a bit wide across the chest. She went for a 2nd fitting, 2 days before the wedding, with the intent to chk it out, pay & leave with it. She called me crying or rather sobbing more like it. It was so tight that they barely got the sleeves up & on her shoulders. She had to hold her breath to zip & the 10 button loops above the zipper were so stretched It looked like they would pop or pull the buttons off any second. The sleeves were hacked & one longer than the other (“cut” couldn’t describe this mess) & they were too short. She told them she was very unhappy & couldn’t move without the shoulders rolling down her arms which exposed the “girls”. It was so tight under the arms she was in pain. Their answer was… that was all they could do for her. Now it’s true that there are gals that think, we… seamsters possess magic wands when they bring dresses in days before they need them, 3-5 sizes to small or so cheaply made they look, as you mentioned, like kid’s costumes. But this dress was unwearable and had been a beautiful gown needing reasonable attention. To top it off all the seams were badly cut to 1/2in or less. I added 2 inches to the shoulders & covered the addition with lace from the hem. The sleeves were slightly gathered so they were adjustable to the larger arm hole. This dropped the bodice enough to fit & she could breathe. Unfortunately the ctr front was just too wide. They had taken the sides in so much that w/ it already being to wide it was part of the reason the shoulders were falling off. I wouldn’t normally take a dress in ctr front but to pull it in, I was able to make a deep dart & shaped the last of the hem lace over it. I did add a couple tabs underneath the ctr back (sewn on one side & snaps on the other) for extra security. Low & behold when the dress dropped down the sleeves were as I expected… not to short. In fact, I was able to put a narrow finished hem & correct the button/ loops on them. I pulled an all nighter to get it done & although tired, I felt like a rock star at the wedding. My gal told everyone that I saved her day. Truth be told I had to help her. With everything that she was dealing with, especially with her dad,I couldn’t say no. I can tell that you love what you do as well & you helped your bride because you couldn’t say no either!!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. We all need to extend ourselves when we can. The difference we can make to others might just be contagious!!! ❤❤❤

A.I. Stories? These stories are absolutely true. I have almost 20 years of true stories to tell.
As far as thumbnails go, I can't use real bride's pictures & pictures of just a gown do not convey the story.
