Thanks Emily...you're not wrong. And do you know what, even after nearly 20 years of doing this, it never gets boring. Every bride is different, every dress, every body, every fabric. I can recommend it as a profession! Thanks for your comment, have a good day x
Have to admit I do use a cutting table for my real bride's gowns, but for the film, I wanted to show how I started, and the fact you don't need fancy kit to make something beautiful :) Thanks for your lovely comment xx
This makes me appreciate the price of a wedding gown. I've been shopping for my wedding in 2019 and it's been a reality check to say the least. You're a craftsman.
Thanks for your kind words, Skye, what a lovely comment! Are you thinking about having your gown made? If so, do get in touch, we'd love to hear your ideas and see if we can help. info@carolinearthur.com We have boutiques in London and Surrey xx
Caroline Arthur I did check out your website immediately following this video. Unfortunately, I live in the United States and it wouldn't even be possible to work with you. A shame, as you are very talented and clearly passionate about what you do!
Hi Michele thanks so much - it's the best job in the world...never gets dull and always keeps you on your creative toes! There's always so much more to learn I find- next on my list is learning to make bias cut gowns really well. What sort of sewing do you do? x
Caroline Arthur I am dabbling in wedding gowns myself since school and I love watching this video over and over it inspires me. I love working with materials and the feel of them. Its amazing. I am so happy you wrote back. Take care and God Bless.
The dress looks fabulous. It really is a job in designing wedding dresses. You have great talent. You keep up the good work.I wish you could do my dress one day im in Arkansas.Where are you?
Hi Pamela, sorry for slow reply! Thank you @Askthebossmom, yes I'm in the UK. Thank you for your kind words - I hope to make some more films this year! x
Thank you, lovely people for viewing my little film here nearly 1/4 million times. And for all your positive comments - they really mean a lot to me and so great to see many of you dabble in stitching or improving your skills if you can already sew and pattern cut. Here's an inspiring recent blog about one of our real brides: www.carolinearthur.com/sarah-and-jim . Happy stitching xx
hello Caroline very beautiful video I don't know if you saw it or if you intended to at time 1.33 you can see the sewing machine electric foot pedal being used very beautiful video shot thank you very much for showing it and have a beautiful day.
This is so wonderful to watch! In college we have not learned how to make a pattern from draping on the stand yet, we make our patterns on pattern paper, make our toilles from calico and fit it to the stand, re-adjust our patterns equally and make another toille.. and then our finished garment. It seems so much longer than what you've done, can you explain to me how you drape on the stand and then use the calico for patterns? Do mark in the add seam allowance before taking it off the stand or on the main fabric? Thank you!
Christian Iannelli Thanks Christian - so pleased to hear you're working on this kind of thing and I think there is a HUGE amount of value in doing it the way you describe, even though at the time it feels very repetitive. I was taught to make patterns this way at the London College of Fashion, and found it suited my way of working. If you google search " pattern making by draping", you'll find loads of short films showing how to do it, although I suspect from the enthusiasm of your tone, you may be the sort of person who just works it out for themselves!! I use the draping process to help me create the shape of the garment and the fit all at the same time, and find it easiest to add the seam allowances once I've taken the toile off the stand, so it is 100% accurate. In practise though, everything needs a tweak once it's stitched, so on the stand, I concentrate more on making sure the symmetry, shape and fit is as good as poss. The film I made wasn't long enough to really clearly show the method, but I intended it to be more an interesting and hopefully beautiful thing to watch, rather than being instructional. What are you working on at the moment? C x
Caroline Arthur Thank you Caroline for you're reply! Its so nice to see how you work in this short film, its quite motivational! I suspected adding the S/A off the stand was more practical. Thank you for the great tips! Please do make more videos! They are wonderful and interesting. I'm currently studying fashion in Griffith College, Dublin. Since it is now summer, I do not have anything to work on, but I want to keep learning and have a more familiar handle on draping for when I return. I mean why not, I have all of summer to learn something! This year we had a skirt and a dress to create and next year we will have a 3 outfit, mini collection to create, so time management and being able to create my designs more accurate, quicker is something I hope to achieve!
Christian Iannelli check out Daniela tabois on here. she has a really good tutorial on draping on stand. I'm just learning and was able to get the concept. she explains everything really well too. and Ms. Arthur, you're design is stunning :-)
Hi Caron, thank you for your lovely message - I make bespoke dresses, so need to see you for fittings. Do you come to the UK sometimes? Please email me info@carolinearthur.com and let me know when your wedding is - I'd love to help! Have a good day, warmest regards, Caroline
hello let me ask did you want to film the sewing machine electric foot pedal into the video or was it Done by accident?and would you consider doing again in a future video?
never give up! theres so much to learn in the internet, you can possibly find a different way to achieve your dream going into a fashion school by always learning from now on!
Anisasani Tamimi So very brave to even try. They say practice makes perfect. Lots of books on the subject Lots of videos available. Think the secret is to start with something simple , always tack the pieces in place before you sew. I'm sure you will surprise yourself 🌸
PLEASE VOTE IF YOU LIKE THIS FILM... it has been entered in filmfest, a competition by musicbed who provided the music. I'd love it if you could please vote and share for me - thank you, just click on this link x: filmfest.musicbed.com/submissions/caroline-arthur-how-a-wedding-dress-is-made/946
Hi Rebecca, thank you for your comment - I nearly made the film as a tutorial, but found that there were quite a few instruction videos on youtube . Do email me though if you wanted to chat about a particular project. Are you making a dress at the moment? info@carolinearthur.com
Greeting from Nc Mrs.Arthur....do you have any suggestions how to make a column style wedding dress into a mermaid style. my desire is wear my mothers wedding dress....but to make it make on.
+HeavenNosMe Gaither Hi and sorry for slow reply. I would suggest to take the pattern from it and look into adding godets (triangles of fabric to increase the circumference of the hem)...really sorry, bit tricky to explain further without being sat in the room with you and the dress! If you look up "copying a dress pattern" and "insert a godet into a dress" on google, you should find enough info to get started. Lovely idea...best of luck! x
HeavenNosMe Gaither if you can find a fabric in the exact same colour you could make a straight cut mermaid skirt. But that would of cause depend on the style of the dress and the materials
I would really appreciate if I can get an idea of where to start on making dresses and ultimately a wedding gown. also if anyone in the comment section has ideas I would appreciate the reply.
Thanks for your comment, Shara... my tip would be to go to your local fabric shop, they should have a catalogue of paper patterns for you to choose a wedding dress you like (just as a practise), buy any fabric you can from the remnant pile, and just give it a go! Once you start, I hope you won't stop :) Also, you should be able to find part time sewing classes near to you, but I'm a great fan of "giving it a go" on your own first, to see if it sticks. Good luck - let me know how you get on xx
I agree I just started sewing 2 years ago and now I make custom wedding gowns. I reccomend giving it a go. I started in the remnant pile as well and wow ive come so far. Never went to a university I self taught myself. You can do it !!!!
Wow! Simply gorgeous. You're so talented. ❤❤
She looks so in her element and doing what she loves!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who cuts fabric on the floor haha. Beautiful work, so inspiring ❤
