So its a fuel relay? My truck sat for awhile. Replacing sensors and stuff like crazy. New starter, battery and plugs. Possibly a furl relay for a rough start?
Those trucks were good looking the step side versions and mechanically they were good to I have a friend who has an extended cab version and it's got close to 190,000 on it and it runs great
Dear farmboy30117, I will try also changing the fuel pump oil pressure switch, as I have heard that it is a back-up system to keep the truck running if the fuel pump relay goes bad while driving. The fuel pump oil pressure switch may have an effect on the crank but no start periodic problem. Thank you dearly for your help thus far!
Got a 1992 K1500 Pickup with a 305 in it, got a problem with starting, I have done the following: changed the ignition control modulator; cap and rotor, fuel pump, O2 senor, map senor and plugs/wires and it still does the same thing ... sometimes it fires right up, cool mornings or it sitting for a couple hours, turn over but will not fire up until I spray starter fluid in it .... sometimes here lately, I crawl under to wiggle the hot wire to the starter to get it going .... also change the relay swtich as well
Definitely sounds fuel related. Check to see if any fuel is spraying from the injectors while someone cranks it over. The fuel pump gets its power from the fuel pump relay initially then through the oil pressure sending unit. If the sending unit is not working properly this could cause an issue.
Dear farmboy30117, I hope that you and yours are doing well! This is Abram. I have, of course, a 1993 Chevrolet Silverado 350 horsepower just like yours. I am still having the mysterious occasional crank but no start issue, although I honestly thought that I had resolved the problem by installing a new fuel pump relay. I have installed other new components, too, but I am having the same problem. Nevertheless, can you tell me what you finally did to your 1993 Silverado truck to resolve the issue, respectfully Abram Graves?
Great video a lot different from what I thought. I was thinking oil pressure or oil pres. switch. My brother has a 93 Blazer just like your truck under the hood. He has a warm/hot restart problem (occasionally) and stumbles after letting off the gas or idling around. I have replaced fuel press. regulator, idle air control, complete tune-up to no avail. Do you think that relay could cause this? Or what ever you think I would appreciate your input. Thank You!
boeingtrijet I don't think the oil pressure switch would cause the engine to do what you're describing. It sounds to me like the throttle plate may be sticking. I'd clean the throttle body and see if that helps. It could also be a leaking injector that is filling the intake with gas and making it flood when warm/hot. Hope this helps.
farmboy30117 Thank You. I already went thru the throttle body but you may have something there on the injector. I had one short out the pigtail connector under the air cleaner on a 91 Metro.
my truck does the same exact thing as yours it'll crank for about 4 or 5 seconds and fire up every time and when it's cold started or it has say for a while it blows a fat cloud of white smoke out of the exhaust and then it is clear and runs perfectly aside from hesitate accelerations it'll bogg down and then pick up and it doesn't pick up to well either in till it's higher in rpms
The smoke is most likely from leaky valve stem seals that let a little oil seep into the cylinder. The throttle body might need cleaning to help on the hesitations.
have a 95 chevy 1500 4x4 with the 5.7 in it. When I start it you can hear it trying but it wont kick over. I was thinking it was the starter but now I am thinking I might be able to check that relay. Thoughts before I go out and buy the parts?
Are you saying the motor will turn over but won't crank, or the motor won't turn over? If it isn't turning over, it isn't the relay, more likely the starter or starter solenoid. If it does turn over, check to see if there's fuel spraying out of the injector. No fuel could mean several things: fuel pump or relay bad, clogged filter, or bad computer.
I have a silverado stepside 88 5.7 i have a hard start!! In pump 5 times the gas pedal and turns on and when and running i wants to hit the gas pedal hard and start like shaking no to bad just some pushs!! And when and turn off and them when i turn on back i have to do the same process 5 times hit the gas pedal and turn on what could be the problem?
I have the exact same truck. same problem, won't start. my fuel pump kicks on and my starter is new. what is this relay for? and could I possibly be experiencing the same issue as you?
Check for spark. These trucks are notorious for ignition modules going bad. The relay just used during initial cranking. It gets its control power from the ECM when you turn the key to the run position to prime the system. The main source of power comes through the oil pressure switch directly to the fuel pump, so even if the relay is bad, the fuel pump should receive power once oil pressure is built.
I have a 93 gmc sierra with a 5.7 . When it gets hot and you t r y to start thought one click out of the starter . TheStar is Brand-new can you give me some help with the situation
These trucks are fairly notorious for failed fuel pumps but before I’d pull the pump maybe crack open the fuel line at the throttle body and confirm there’s no fuel pressure when you turn the switch on. A bad computer would also not allow it to crank because it operates the injectors. Good luck.
Is it just a fuel pump relay ? I'm having the same exact issues. Decided to turn to you tube and found your video so I want to see if that is the problem first ?
If it's having the exact same symptoms I'd suspect the relay first. The PCM energizes the relay when you turn the key to "on" for a few seconds to prime the line. After it builds up oil pressure, the fuel pump is powered through the oil pressure switch. You can always check to make sure you have power and ground at the relay, then check for control power when you turn the switch on.
Hey idk if they reply went through I don't see anything but sry to bother you again but the motor from the 95 chev has a hose on top of the water pump nd my 93 doesn't have a hose on top of the water pump what you suggest I'd do? Switch the rad
I have 1990 Chevy and after I drive for a while it won't start not even a click, but it starts if I use the remote start button, what you think it could be?
Hey farmboy my 95 silverado shuts off right after i turn it on, then I turn it on again and runs fine , it always only shuts off right after I turn it on
I have a question to when I start my 1993 chev 4x4 when I take off it runs and maybe about two miles down the road when I let go of the gas it wants to stall when I pump the gas it idles back to normal but when I take off again it gos like that why do u think it gos like that? And one more question if i swap with 95 chev motor to my 93 what it make a difference btw awesome vids :)
nanooch101 Hard to say without doing some testing. Does the check engine light come on? Could be a lot of things (TPS, MAP sensor, EGR sticking, vacuum leak, etc) I think Chevy started putting the Vortec engines in Silverados in 1996, so a 1995 engine should be the same as what you have now. If you swap in a Vortec engine, you will need to get the PCM for it.
Ok thx nd the 1995 chev motor I got has a hose on top of the water pump nd my 93 doesn't have a hose on top the water pump instead that hose is connected to the fire wall nd to the rad nd my 95 chev motor it's to the fire wall to the water pump do I have to switch the water pump take the one from the 93 nd put it to my 95 chev motor?
Check to see if the water pump has a plug on top where the hose would go. The connection at the firewall is to the heater core, I guess Chevy just routed them differently.
I have a question I have a 97 chevy 1500. It starts and runs but it starts really slow. After I run the truck awhile and start it maybe 20 minutes later it's starts just fine. But other than that it starts really slow any suggestions.
One thing that comes to mind is maybe you're losing fuel pressure. Try cycling the key on & off a few times before cranking. If that helps, your fuel pump may be getting weak.
hey farmboy, i have a 93 chevy truck with the 4.3 ltr in it, it was running rich and now it wont turn over, what do you think the issue would be on the truck
I got a 1998 Chevy Silverado 350 vortec that takes awhile to start after it sits for 7 hours or more or over night I got a new mass air flow sensor though that was the problem but it's not , still takes awhile to start up got any ideas ??
+Cory Chalifoux Sounds more like a fuel issue like it's losing prime or not priming when the key is on. Check the fuel pump and relay to make sure it's working properly. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, it'll make it a lot easier.
I'm having an issue with my 1993 chevy. It starts but if I go some where and turn it off, it won't start until I let it rest for 20 or 30 min. I when I go turn it on it won't crank.
I got a 94 1500 with 5.7 was running good then started to sputter then stopped dead on the highway I thought was control module changed it then thought it was the coil changed still no spark, had a cap and rotor and fuel relay done before I owned it
hey got a q for ya i got a 96 350 vortec that ran fine for few days then i messed with the stereo and it rained, so next morning it cranks and dont turn over? ive replaced starter silinoid cause that was sparkin all over heck cause pos wire was touchin ground. but that diddnt fix but does crank better,. checked spark everywhere there is spark visable spark anyway i dont know if theres a certain amount of spark needed but theres spark where needs be, theres fuel gettin there i tested fuel relay cross wired so relay would pump the fuel pump thats all workin order, i dont know where to go next maybie a ground somwhere or module switch or relay i have no clue any advice would be great,.. god bless
+Francis Shattuck When I troubleshoot cranking issues, I always go in this order: fuel, air, spark, timing. I don't have much experience with Vortecs, but just because a fuel pump will run, doesn't mean the injectors are working. You'd need a noid light or some way of testing to see if the computer is sending a signal to the injectors. Don't know why messing with the radio would have any effect on anything unless you blew a fuse to something important so check all your fuses. Hope this helps.
Hi farmboy great video , where would I start looking other than under the hood, to find a parasitic short in my 4.3 chevy Blazer. I realized when I saw the battery cable spark strongly whenever I re connected it , apparently was draining battery . I heard a noise /electrical like sound inside of cab also whenever I reconnected , I believe that could be my short . Thanks for any idea or suggestion you could have. All the best.
I was going to tell you to start pulling fuses and check for spark (assuming you don't have an amp clamp) but it's dangerous to have sparking going on near the battery (batteries can give off hydrogen gas & go boom) so if you want to do this the safe way, get an amp clamp and put it around one the battery cables. Check for current draw with the cables hooked to the battery. Pull 1 fuse from the fuse block at a time and check the amp draw. When it falls off that's the circuit to go after. That should narrow it down.
Thanks for the advise. I have a light probe tester and still checking fuses, I am thinking next will check the bigger fuses under the hood, I'll get back to you when I find out the score. This Blazer is a lot of head aches but we'll see. Thanks again Farmboy
I don't think you'll find which circuit has a load on it or not with the probe, but maybe it will. I guess if you can figure out what is running when you hook the battery up, that'll be the issue. Good luck!
Thanks, that's what I think ,if I can find what is running as you mention, light probe is connected between cable and battery, light goes on but its going to be hard to locate and cause light to turn off because of short, Yikes
hey fan boy i have a 93 chevy silverado 5.7 my truck will star up but when it does it throws black smoke just for a couple of seconds it will stay on but when i am ready to step on the gas and take of somewhere it cuts off on me any idea wha t could it be?? i already replace the fuel filter.
Hey farmboy30117 I have a 93 chevy with the 5.7 350 and its having a hesitation problem. when I start it up I can give it 1/4 throttle and it'll sputter out, sometimes catch itself but most the time it'll just sputter out and die. I have changed all of the sensors on top of the engine, put a new fuel filter on it, New plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, New injectors and rebuilt the Throttle body, any suggestions on what else it could be. thanks
Sounds like you've covered all the usual suspects. Does it do it when it's fully warmed up or just when it's cold? Could be a leaky intake manifold. Try doing a smoke test to see if you have any vacuum or intake leaks. There's some videos on UA-cam that shows how to build a smoke machine or you can take it to a good shop and have them do it. That's about all I can think of right now.
I have a Chevy 1992 Cheyenne 3500 with the 454 it won't start while cranking if I dump a little gas in the carburetor it starts right up and stay started I changed fuel filter check pump changed control module it doesn't look like it's priming
Mine would start after the oil pressure came up which indicated that the fuel pump relay was bad. If your relay is bad and it is taking a long time to build oil pressure, you could run into this issue.
@@farmboy30117 every time I step on my break to put it in gear it completely dies out it won't let me even shift into gear unless I started in neutral then I could shift into drive drive until I step on the break then it dies out at which point I will have to dump gas back into the carb to get it started and repeat the whole process
Mine will start up on the first hit but usually the first time I start it for the day it’s a long start and it bogs down a little and then goes to normal but if I shut it off and start it again it fires first hit
I have a 93 GMC it will start but won't stay running the idol bounces up and down then it stalls Out and dies if I sit there warm it up for everthen when I put it in gear it will die after warming it up when I put it in gear it won't die can you help thanks formboy
I was going to say check for a vacuum leak, but since it doesn't do it when it's warmed up, I suspect the idle air controller is giving issues. I assume there's no trouble code set, correct?
Check the vacuum line going to the EGR solenoid to make sure it isn't cracked and the nipple on the solenoid is still intact. I made a video on replacing this solenoid.
hello. I've got a starting problem you might know the solution. I'm trying to avoid changing the fuel pump. if I start the suburban (94, 7.4 L) in 10 sec intervals, at almost exactly 36 seconds of start time, it starts. if I start it within an hour or two, it starts right up. overnight? 36 seconds of start time. I replaced the fuel filter ( increased power a lot). buying a new relay this after noon. any suggestions?
I think the relay will solve your problem. Sounds like it's having to build oil pressure to get the fuel pump to run. After sitting for a while, the fuel pressure bleeds off so it has to rebuild pressure.
Have a 96 Chevy Silverado after it sits for a day or so and I go to start it in the morning it starts , idles rough then stalls. I let it sit for a few seconds try again and usually it's fine .. Anyone know what it could be ?
Tengo una chevrolet cheyenne 1993 v6 en v std y se callo la aguja de la gasolina hacia la derecha no se mueve nada y enciende la camioneta bien, pero despues se apaga tengo que acelerarle pero como que sin fuerza que sera!
i have a slow crank condition starter tests good battery knew all cables and wires are knew voltage drops during cranking from 12.6. to 7 to 8 to 9 or there abouts it seems like a short to ground only during cranking all cables are knew including grounds and were they hook up bright shinny metal im stupmed and at a stand still
You said the battery was good, but it sounds like it might have a shorted cell. I ran into a similar issue on a Ford Taurus. Battery checked good but voltage would drop to 7V with just a 10 amp draw. Try another battery. A hard short would probably smoke the wires.
My 92 GMC Yukon won't start the first time I turn the key, I turn the key to start it and nothing happens but when I do it the second time it fires right up no problem. Does anybody know what the problem could be?
Sounds like it's losing it's prime when sitting. Takes a couple pump starts to build up pressure. Could be a bad pump or a faulty check valve in the pump housing.
My 92 SUB won't start sometimes when I have the air cleaner on. But I take the air cleaner off she starts right. Put air air cleaner back put it in drive she starts die on me.
+Ray Waterz That's strange! I wonder if it can't get enough air through the filter. Does it still have the factory air intake duct attached to the filter housing? If so, it might have something inside blocking the air flow. If not, pull a plug and see if it's running rich (black tip) or lean (white tip).
I have a 93 chevy Silverado that runs fine. When I drive long distance or about 30 min I'll turn the truck off to get gas or whatever and it won't turn on. About 5-15 min later it'll turn on & run just fine. Does anyone know what it could be
When you say it won't turn on, do you mean the starter won't crank the engine over or does it crank but not run? If the starter motor isn't working, it is probably getting too hot and the starter is weak. Either install a heat shield or replace the starter. If it cranks but doesn't run, then you will need to do some more digging (fuel or ignition). In this case, the most likely suspect is a weak ignition control board under the distributor rotor. Check for spark to confirm when you're having this issue.
Sounds like something is wrong with the priming circuit. When you turn the ignition key to 'run', the PCM sends power to the fuel pump relay for about 3-5 seconds. The relay closes and sends power to the fuel pump. This is supposed to prime the fuel lines. There is a test terminal near the fuel pump relay that you can use with a test light to see if it's getting power when you turn the key to 'run'. If it doesn't light up, take the test terminal and apply it to power and it should turn the pump on. This should prime the circuit and the truck should crank. If you're not getting power, it's going to be either a problem with the switch or a problem with the relay, or a blown fuse.
If you cycle the key on the restart, will it fire back up then stall again? If it does, check your oil pressure switch. The fuel pump gets initial power from the PCM through the fuel pump relay. Once it cranks enough to build oil pressure, it gets powered through the oil pressure switch. Cycling the key will send power to the fuel pump through the relay again.
after I cycle key...it cranks only, no fire I jump grey and orange wire at fuel relay, truck starts then stalls, and will Not restart. Fuel system is all new, tank pump, filter, lines. TBI, injectors, Have not checked spark

hey farmboy, i have a 93 chevy truck with the 4.3 ltr in it, it was running rich and now it wont turn over, what do you think the issue would be on the truck
+mike s When you say it won 't turn over, do you mean the engine won't turn at all?
i meant that it will try to turn over but wont fire, and i noticed that fuel is leaking out of the side of the throttle body
Sounds like a bad injector or the fuel pressure regulator is bad. Might want to pull the spark plugs to make sure you didn't foul them with gas too.
Thanks bigpaw, I guess they're more concerned with quantity and not quality.
What was the the issue beforehand?
Long crank time
I'm having an issue with my 1993 chevy. It starts but if I go some where and turn it off, it won't start until I let it rest for 20 or 30 min. I when I go turn it on it won't crank.
Bad fuel pump
My 1992 GMC Sierra 1500 after driving about an hour on the highway all the sudden it won't go past 55 what can I do
That is a nice truck!
Thanks!
I got a 94 1500 with 5.7 was running good then started to sputter then stopped dead on the highway I thought was control module changed it then thought it was the coil changed still no spark, had a cap and rotor and fuel relay done before I owned it
No spark = bad ICM, ECM, pickup coil, or primary coil or power/ground issues.
hey got a q for ya i got a 96 350 vortec that ran fine for few days then i messed with the stereo and it rained, so next morning it cranks and dont turn over? ive replaced starter silinoid cause that was sparkin all over heck cause pos wire was touchin ground. but that diddnt fix but does crank better,. checked spark everywhere there is spark visable spark anyway i dont know if theres a certain amount of spark needed but theres spark where needs be, theres fuel gettin there i tested fuel relay cross wired so relay would pump the fuel pump thats all workin order, i dont know where to go next maybie a ground somwhere or module switch or relay i have no clue any advice would be great,..
How's the 383 running?
my 1993 has no spark did yours have spark does the fuel pump relay control the spark to. mine cranks no spark no start
The ECM controls spark. Most likely there's a problem with the distributor (ECM, pickup coil, rotor, or rotor button) or the main coil.
hey fan boy i have a 93 chevy silverado 5.7 my truck will star up but when it does it throws black smoke just for a couple of seconds it will stay on but when i am ready to step on the gas and take of somewhere it cuts off on me any idea wha t could it be?? i already replace the fuel filter.
Black smoke indicates too much fuel. Worn injectors?
I have a question Me and my dad just replaced the restributor and coil and the plug and it still work fire up I'm working with a 1990gmc pickup
No spark? Did you watch the video I made on ignition systems? It might help: ua-cam.com/video/hZ2iaN79nC4/v-deo.html
We got it to start thx it was flooding itself with gasoline
what relay is that? whats it called i am having trouble starting my truck
Fuel pump relay
Thanks!
Does this cause a long crank before start?
Yes, it has to build up oil pressure to send power to the fuel pump (if the relay is bad)
I took some stating fluid and sprayed it around the intake, found one leak and fixed it. And yes it does it fully warmed up and when it's cold
When you rebuilt the throttle body did you replace the fuel pressure regulator?
I believe so, I had a mechanic do that part of it, so I'm assuming he did.
Good job buddy!
Thanks! This one had me baffled ;)
I have a 95 96 chevy g30 van tbi and it takes very long to start up and sometimes drives sluggish what could that be ??
If I had to guess, I'd say it's fuel related issues like dirty injectors
Stay tuned, I'll be uploading a vid later today.
You didn’t say what “this” was. There are many relays on a vehicle.
I'm guessing you mean the fuel pump relay that I replaced twice since the first new one was bad too.
Mine will start up on the first hit but usually the first time I start it for the day it’s a long start and it bogs down a little and then goes to normal but if I shut it off and start it again it fires first hit
What relay was that and what for?..Thanks
I have a 93 GMC it will start but won't stay running the idol bounces up and down then it stalls Out and dies if I sit there warm it up for everthen when I put it in gear it will die after warming it up when I put it in gear it won't die can you help thanks formboy
I was going to say check for a vacuum leak, but since it doesn't do it when it's warmed up, I suspect the idle air controller is giving issues. I assume there's no trouble code set, correct?
Yes it says code 54 which I replace the relay and there's another 54 and it says EGR so that's what I going to try next if not the IAC
Check the vacuum line going to the EGR solenoid to make sure it isn't cracked and the nipple on the solenoid is still intact. I made a video on replacing this solenoid.
does the 93 have custom exhaust
It has louder than factory mufflers but I'm not sure which kind. It was like that when I got it.
and yall wonder why napa is almost gone
What relay is that
For
fuel pump
Desde hoy SUSCRITO.
After sitting for a while, the fuel pressure bleeds off so it has to rebuild pressure.
farmboy30117 thanks! I'll let you know the results. appreciate the quick reply.
Why when I turn on my truck it turns off
My truck cuts out in the morning until it warms up then it does okay but it hesitates at 50 anybody have any answers
Fuel pump relay?
Yes
@@farmboy30117 thanks I'll try it. I feel like I'm killing my battery and starter Everytime I start up my truck
Have a 96 Chevy Silverado after it sits for a day or so and I go to start it in the morning it starts , idles rough then stalls. I let it sit for a few seconds try again and usually it's fine .. Anyone know what it could be ?
chance patterson Sounds like the IAC (Idle Air Controller) sticking.
Yeah when fuel pump relay is bad it won’t start until it sees oil pressure anyways lol
i have a slow crank condition starter tests good battery knew all cables and wires are knew
voltage drops during cranking from 12.6. to 7 to 8 to 9 or there abouts it seems like a short to ground only during cranking all cables are knew including grounds and were they hook up bright shinny metal im stupmed and at a stand still
You said the battery was good, but it sounds like it might have a shorted cell.

If not, pull a plug and see if it's running rich (black tip) or lean (white tip).
farmboy30117 Turned out to be my MAP sensor, Thanks
Check out part 1
But around the city it drives like nothing's wrong
Fuel pump
I have a 91 Chevy Silverado that won't start unless I prime it. But it has been running just fine. Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my truck
If you're not getting power, it's going to be either a problem with the switch or a problem with the relay, or a blown fuse.
farmboy30117 OK thank u very much I sure will try that
farmboy30117 hey where is the test terminal that u wer talking about
It should be very close to the fuel pump relay on the firewall.
farmboy30117 OK, well now I've noticed that I'm not getting any fire to my spark plugs, getting fire to my distributor but that's it
My truck starts right up...then stalls. On the restart it cranks and cranks but will NOT start. Any ideas, anyone???
Murphy’s law bub
that relay is a fuel pump relay
Yep
That’s the fucking fuel pump relay just watched this vid and did the same shut nothing
Thanks man!
