      And Stage 8 with the moving tables

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  8 років тому

      +MrGamer1992 I was kinda iffy on Stage 4, but I guess you're right on that. I hardly count Stage 8 with the tables though. They are very minor and if you want to count them, in my opinon they are bad stage hazards because they come out of nowhere with almost no time to react.

    • @MrGamer1992
      @MrGamer1992 8 років тому +1

      +Retropolis Zone When I think of stage hazards, I think of objects in the environment that can harm you without (or indirectly caused) enemy activity

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  8 років тому

      +MrGamer1992 That is true, but the moving tables are not really engaging or interesting enough. If anything is makes Stage 8 cheaper than it already is. What I really mean with stage gimmicks and hazards is stuff like the bulldozer or mine carts in Streets of Rage 3, which actually changes up the gameplay and reduces repetition.

    that was another great and informative review. Very honest and not clouded by nostalgia. I admit, I'm the same as you in that I play it every so often and love it mostly for it's soundtrack but it's defo not withstood the test of time. The second game is the real game to play. I would love to see more honest reviews from you. Please please please do a review of Streets of Rage 2, 3, & Remake.

      +The Side Quest Gamer Yeah it's stupid hard, but I still prefer it over SoR1, to be honest... But then again, maybe that's because I've played these games so often that the difficulty is no longer an issue for me. Except SoR2 on Mania, lol.

    Great video and analysis of this game. I can understand the frustrations with the Streets of Rage. This is definitely one of those titles that can be hard to go back to once you played its sequel, but it's a solid title. It's no Final Fight.

    I know you may be discouraged by the lack of views here, but the 2nd game really deserves a review, it addresses literally every flaw you accurately presented here and goes far beyond making it a timeless classic. The word should be spread. I rate this game an 7.9 but SOR2 is easily a 9.7 to me.
    Honestly the 2nd game kind of spoiled me, I still enjoy this one but the sequel is just that much of an improvement.

    I will say while this game isn't perfect in the slightest I still find it pretty good but not as good as 2 or 3. It can get repetitive but that for me is not a big issue as long as it's not noticable. In this game's case I don't think it's that big of an issue. Sure, it's a bit basic but it gets the job done I say. I do admit though there could of been some elements that could of been done a lot better.
    The special attack for example can be easily exploited and some of the boss battles I think could of been more tweaked with in terms of the patterns and the window of time to hit them. Especially the two blaze clones. My god, they are so damn cheap I swear the only way I can beat them is to use the special attack because I don't know how to effectively kill them without dying a lot.(I definitely understand your frustration with them as they are cheap as all hell.)
    The music I will say is pretty good overall. It's not the best I have heard from the Genesis library (or in your region the Megadrive.) but it does a great job fitting all the stages. And yeah Blaze is my definitive character to play in this game. Though yeah great review overall.

  • @LWAigasu
    @LWAigasu 5 років тому +1

    The first Streets of Rage was the last one I played. 2 and 3 are better, but I was surprised at the fact that some moves I thought were new in 3 originated in 1.

  • @MrGamer1992
    @MrGamer1992 8 років тому +4

    Anyways I got to say, I may be blinded by nostalgia and I do agree the first might not be the best to start out on the series, this game was my childhood. I remember every weekend, my sister would bring over her Sega Genesis and I would play the living crap out of Streets of Rage. I played it so many times that I more or less know how much health each bad guys have and I have strategized on how to beat them.
    Now fast forward to when I was 18 years old. I went on ebay and I got myself Streets of Rage 2. I played it and beat it. While it is better than the first Streets of Rage, I prefer the first over the second. Now this applies to only me and I don't expect anyone to follow suit.
    Nice job on the review. I will wait for Streets of Rage 2 whenever you get the chance to review that game

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  8 років тому +2

      +MrGamer1992 It's awesome to have such memories of games and I know exactly what you mean. Any and all problems a game may have, you simply don't notice or don't care about and there's nothing wrong with that. Liking a game for nostalgic reasons is totally cool; even though I only got into the Streets of Rage titles from 2009 and onwards, they do hold a special spot for me as well. I can still enjoy the first one quite a bit, especially with somebody else by my side.
      But for a review I gotta be honest and critical about what I'm dealing with, and while, like I said, I don't think Streets of Rage 1 is a bad beat-'em-up whatsoever, I also don't think it's very good. I'll be straight up in saying that both sequels are way superior, in my eyes.
      Anyway, thanks for the comment and support. I do want to do all three games of course and it shouldn't be terribly long until Streets of Rage 2.

      +MrGamer1992 Same; I knew exactly how many hits each enemy took and all the best ways to take them out. The elevator was a throw only area for me.
      This game and many others were extra magical when they were new and as such it's a bit weird to hear them be reviewed now by people that don't have that connection to them. It's fine and people can't help when they were born or exposed to the games but I wish more people could've had those experiences.
      I do like having people talking about these games all the same though whether they like them as much as I do or not.

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  8 років тому +2

      Tanerion I never really said I didn't like this game. In fact I can replay it over and over and know it and out like you guys. However, I'm not gonna pretend the problems I noticed in the game now don't exist just because I have a connection to it. This isn't a bad game but I do certainly think it has bland and frustrating elements that have dated the game and make it less enjoyable than it could have been.

      Retropolis Zone Didn't say you didn't like it or that I had a problem with your opinion. Said I wish more people could've experienced these games when they were new.

  • @AzureSymbiote
    @AzureSymbiote 8 років тому +1

    Thanks a ton for doing this. The first SOR (or Bare Knuckle as I had played it back in the day) is still my favorite of the original three. Of course my main is Blaze as well but are you sure Adam is the strongest? I've tested on the very first enemy and it always took him an additional hit to kill him. Also, if I recall you could throw any weapon via pressing two of the buttons. But perhaps that is only for the latter games. Y. Signal stands for Yellow Signal. I would disagree with you regarding replayability because I love nighttime cityscapes combined with great music.
    And don't worry about the channel's popularity. Good things take time. Will you be doing the other two games? I definitely recommend checking out the fan made remake. That's the best SOR game out there.

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  8 років тому +1

      +AzureSymbiote I don't know man, I just went with whatever the stats on the selection screen stated, haha. If Adam isn't any stronger than the rest then that's pretty poor balancing. And yes, you can only throw away weapons in SoR2 and 3 by pressing two buttons simultaneously. I do replay this game myself quite often and I know it and out, but I just think the gameplay itself isn't deep or varied enough to warrant much more than one playthrough, unless you are very much into this type of game and the theming/music presented here, or have somebody else to play with.
      Yes, I will be doing the other two games as well as the remake. The remake is too good to pass up.

    Another great review there, i'm a big fan of this series, i hope that you review the japanese Bare Knuckle 3, maybe with an english translation patch, they changed a lot of things that made the american version of SOR3 quite bad, and to think that they didn't even bothered to include the obviously superior japanese version in this collection.

      +HappehMaster I believe most UA-camrs generally don't exactly know what got 'em to grow and most don't expect it whatsoever. Half of it comes down to dedication and perseverance while the other comes down to dumb luck and connections with popular folks, from my experience.
      The advice I *can* give is to always make the highest quality content you can that is very well-presented. UA-cam is an enormous place with tremendous amounts of competition; in order to even have a chance at standing out, you'll need to be on the top of your game nowadays. Use sharp and clear video/audio, make your delivery exciting and pleasant to listen to, create appealing thumbnails, etc. It also helps to have certain twists and gimmicks in your videos that you can hardly find in the same way anywhere else.
      Hope that helps, mate. Good luck. :)

      I still want to do 2, 3 and Remake sometime, but every time I see the low view count for this video (despite it being one of my personal favorite videos), I feel there really isn't a big demand. The fact Mega Man X6 trumped over this video in a single day crushes me.

    • @TurtleTitan03
      @TurtleTitan03 7 років тому +1

      Retropolis Zone Yeah, but know that those who watched think you did great(at least I do.) for some reason people seem more intrigued about watching more discussed popular titles over lesser known ones, and I don't know why to be honest as I love to discover games I'd never known before through in depth videos.
      To be honest the main reason I've continued to watch your Mega Man and Sonic reviews is because I think you do a really good job critiquing them in a fair light, not really because I want to see you trash 06 and Mega Man X6 as others have in the past.
      Keep up what you do anyways dude, It's good stuff and I'd personally love to see your thoughts on the rest of the SoR games.

      That's great to know, that people do like this video. Thanks! I guess it's just a shame not many people know about Streets of Rage, haha. I am pretty sure I'll do Streets of Rage 2 and 3 somewhere next year, but right now I am kind of focusing on pushing out real analytical stuff on more popular games to even get a larger audience. I know that might sound stupid, but the more people I can reach, the more I can produce in the long run. :)

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 7 років тому +2

      Retropolis this is because the Genesis is stupidly underappreciated, misunderstood and underrated in the states. Idk about the UK but people ignorantly think the Sonic games are the only worthy franchise on the Gen, it's fucking ridiculous.
      Ppl wanna wank to Nintendo and Sony all day and man do I love them too so many great games...but Sega's consoles are arguably just as great but for different reasons and that's what ppl don't understand.
      Sega's consoles may not have the "very best" rpg's like Chrono T or the open world games like Super Metroid etc., but many of the very best 2D arcade-esque games are on Sega hardware and Streets of Rage 2 is a perfect example of that.
      Still one of the very best beat em up's of all time and a timelessly great game all around. My 2nd favorite 2D game ever.,I really hope you review it, it took *everything* about this good but flawed initial entry, and pushed it up to friggin 15. The Stage 7 elevator sequence has got to be one of the absolute best action sequences in gaming history (on harder difficulties at least). Anyway the console deserves more attention.

    Also, I added a bit of replay value to this game by using the hacks from Streets of Rage Online Website. Stuff like rapid fire enemies, 2 bosses instead of 1 on single player mode etc, and also select the same character in 2 player mode gave me some extra fun time with the title I got most acustomed to. I also would ask people to challenge yourself to completing the game legit (no save states) using 1 hit, as in can you complete the game without getting hit?.... I've done this on both Easy and Normal difficulties but still can't do it on Hard or Hardest.

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  8 років тому

      Oh definitely, fanmade hacks can really change the way you play some of these games. Another good example would be the Zero Project for Mega Man X3. They're not really official material so I don't cover them in these reviews, but a lot of them are worth a looksie.

    Being cheap in fighting games/beatemups is bad design? Bruh plz, that shit's the backbone of even the likes of games that formed genres like Street Fighter

For me and for many other players, the fan remake is actually better than the original games themselves (and possibly the best 2D side-scrolling beat-em-up game ever). Ai aggresiveness , wich is broken, most enemies are going to try to hunt your back and you are going to use a lot the back attack. but its more difficult to make wake up attacks because they tend to move away from your kicks the moment they wake up and their /fast/ mode (enemies have two speeds and in harder difs their fast mode is faster) lets them dodge you if you dont time perfectly.
    Enemy count. It also multiplies at two players and some stages are going to slow down a lot.
    Enemy life. In easy, most enemies die in one suplex. in hardest, the suplex is only going to help you with the blue galsias only.
    only unique to this game thatdoesnt repeat in any other, except the american SOR 3. Enemies do more damage with difficulty. A boss in easy will take a quarter of life. some boses in the hardest skills are insta kill.
    SOR in the hardest skill is NOT fun. Its like mania in SOR 2. Enemies are NOT as tanky , but killing them needs to either spam the back attack because they love to hunt your back, or perfectly time your grabs on wake up wich is harder than it seems, specially for red galsias.
    Since there are more enemies and you get easily stun locked. Axel is almost useless. Because you will need to jump a lot to prevent stunlock scenarios as much as possible. and axel kick does no good damage and worse it has piss reach.
    Overall... Sor was the best Console beat em up of that moment. Because it was the only good with coop. Final fight was not very good compared with the arcade but it held up... however it had no coop. Also Final fight 2 is not a good game, not atleast for a final fight. And it would be some extra years before FF3.

    Adam is by far my favourite one to play as in this game, the sequels I default to Blaze but this one I go for Adam all the way. I love this series, unofficial remake included. I even quite like the was gonna be SOR4 but ended up as spiritual successor, fighting force.

    Great review man, I grew up with the Streets of Rage games, so I always enjoy watching videos focusing on them. You've earned yourself another subscriber !

      It's sadly a series kind of hard to find videos on. After all, they don't bring in nearly as much of dat sweet UA-cam viewership as Sonic and Mario and other franchises done to death. Thanks for subscribing, anyway!

      Retropolis Zone Very true, that's why I appreciate these videos that much more, I especially like that you always focus on the music in the games, that's something that a lot of reviewers tend to overlook. I really appreciate the time and thought put into these videos ! I look forward to your future uploads !

    Will you be doing a review on the Streets of Rage Remake that was made by Bombergames? I feel that you'll have a good sum of stuff to talk about with that game.

    Great review, even for one of your older videos. Pretty much summed up my thoughts on this game exactly, it's an alright if arguably lacking first installment for a series, which left me wanting to try again for its music alone aside from respect for the original devs.

    People say the first is a Final Fight rip off but Streets of Rage has always had it's own identity; from being able to call for back up to the ending.
