I'm thankful the delisted streets of rage remake held me over until SOR4 which has old man Zan who could represent grandpa. Nice to have someone great for multiplayer, or a ghost as a legacy if it's a time trial, though I think samurai shodown on ps4 had a type of AI based on your patterns. Level 7 and 8 are hilarious with glitches.
I’m just getting into 4 after hating on it for years. I always thought SoR Remake was superior 🤷🏽♂️ Anyway it’s so good. Captured that 90s feel so well
I love this game! I know the fan favorite is the sequel, but I have a massive fondness for this one. I played it every time I would visit one of my friends but never owned it until my grandparents were able to to get me a Genesis that came with the 6 in 1 pack, if anyone remembers that. Grew up pretty poor but anytime they got me a game I treasured it, and Streets of Rage was my go-to! Thanks for your hard work UCBVG, and Super Metroid when 😏
I was so mad when I played the 2nd one, got talked up on how good Max was, and then went back to the 1st one and wondered why Adam Hunter wasn't in the 2nd one.
Similarly I had 3 in one megadrive game that had Golden axe, streets of rage and revenge of shinobi on one cartridge. Fun times of being a mega drive owner, I have all these games on the mega drive collection on my PS5 :)
I remember tearing through this game with my brother, only for him to try to betray me at the end, causing the bad ending. Whenever he wanted to play it normally, I betrayed him. Every time.
I might be in the minority but SoR1 is my favorite in the trilogy. Don't get me wrong, I love SoR2 (I still own the cartridges for the first and second game and play them fairly often) and Sor3 is a fine game as well, but i really think SoR1 is an absolute masterpiece. There's just little details that are amazing about it. For instance: in Round 8, notice how when you start the level, and as you pass the first window, it is still night. The further you progress through the level and the closer you get to the final crime boss, you'll see that daylight is starting to break, signifying Mr. X's hold of the city is coming to an end! The music on that last stage is brilliant as well. You can feel the desperation and tenseness of the enemy as he throws everything he's got at you, yet you can sense the finalization of the long, hard fought and selfless journey to dispel evil and free the people of terror is right behind that last door. I love it.
I half agree. I think SoR2 is the better game and (arguably) has the better sound track. However, there is something about the grittiness of SoR1 that just hits different and just makes it feel more badass. I love it.
I never owned a Genesis as a kid but I have the fondest memories of playing beat 'em ups with my childhood friend Jeff! We beat Double Dragon 3 for the NES together but I also remember us beating the original Streets of Rage on his Genesis. I forgot just how great this game was. The graphics, music, and atmosphere was top-notch and despite being a Nintendo kid, SOR is WAY better than Final Fight IMO. It's no contest. :)
I remember getting this on the Wii Virtual Console and having a blast playing it. The music was awesome and i loved the nightlife tech noir feel of the city. Been a fan of the franchise since. Blaze and Axel were my favorites.
Thank you so much for giving this game a complete play through. Gotta respect the 1st game for setting the bar up for the sequel cause even by itself, the first SoR game is solid.
I remember my brother got a mega drive for his birthday when I was about 5 years old and I loved this, but my sister pulled it out of the wall like a week later to watch music videos on Saturday morning and broke it. Tbh i just want some sympathy for this loss 25 years ago.
My favorite part of your videos is the first five minutes giving history and background about the game. Do you have any plans to post those segments as stand alone clips? I'd watch a whole Playlist of them
Does he Tiktok? Cuz posting the first few minutes as (a series of?) Tiktoks would be cool, as well as possibly drive traffic to this channel! Besides that, I do know of a few creators that have separate YT channels for 'clip content', so maybe that'd be something worth pursuing? (I think people usually post them on a separate channel for algorithm purposes; YT seems to like for you to keep posting the same kind of content, & if you have long-form & short-form content on the same channel, it gets a li'l cranky. Freakin' emotional computer algorithms, amirite?!)
I don't know how I am just now finding out about this channel, but this is, hands down, the **BEST** retro entertainment UA-cam channel in existence. I watch this while I code, I have it playing while going to sleep; I can watch them over and over. It's not a let's play, it's not a narration, it's not a guide, it's not a historical perspective, it's not a documentary, it's all of those things all at the same time. My hats off to you, sir.
Hell yeah brother! I see you beat the algorithm by releasing quality super mario content at the same time the movie was released. Genius. The subscriber jump was noticeable. Keep crushing it. Some of my earliest memories are watching you play video games. You could say I was your original fan. I got the live version of "U Can Beat Video Games" from you about 27 years ago.
@@KingofCrusher ...there was SMB movie released recently?? So his release of the SMW 2-part playthrough, at the same time there was a hecka lotta chatter about the SMB series/brand as a whole, likely contributed to a recent subscriber boost. I'd have to check; it was well before the merch launch, I remember that) & I'm just wicked proud of how much his channel has grown *AND* that he's hasn't changed his format or personality as he's grown. It's kinda refreshing, tbh.
@@ninjaguyYT Oh geez that makes perfect sense, haha. Rereading the original comment I'm like duh, of course this dude was friends with him as a kid. Thank you.
Love this series! Started with 2 then went to 1 to 3. Happy that SoR 4 was made because it's an amazing game. I hope that there will be a 5th one. There's a fan made one that I enjoy a lot where it lets you pick your path and you can mix and match the levels from 1-3 it's an amazing and fun game. Can't wait for the next video🎉🎉
I played this game so many times as a kiddo... but there was so many things in this Vid I never knew about... including the secret bad ending... which i'm SO glad is not the Canon one...
OMG! I love this game soooooo much! I spent so many hours trying to beat it as a kid the big guys in the factory level kept killing me. I didnt beat it until 2012 when i watched a tips video and picked up gaming again on how to just punch slow to trap the enemies in a loop. By far the best side scrolling fight game ever!!!!
I think many people consider SoR 2 to be an objectively-better game, but SoR 1 is still my favorite of the series. The soundtrack (especially that boss theme) is just too iconic to me. Also, SoR 1 has the best iteration of Blaze! Another easy way to beat the Blaze clones (as Blaze) is to corral them both to one side of the screen. Once they are there, face Blaze in the opposite direction of them, and do your backwards-kick as soon as the jump-kicker is half-way through the apex of their kick, and/or when the grappler is in range. They will never be able to land a hit on you in this loop.
I was in the Final Fight camp as a kid, but the Etrian Odyssey series made me fall in love with Yuzo Koshiro's music, after checking out his earlier titles his work really makes them fantastic.
You gamer sage! Keep going! All your vids, are historical and gamer strategy. Your vids are fun to watch. Its relaxing after, working a 10 hour shift. Congrats!
Until they did the recent patch that takes away shivas infinite combo. I got to lvl 82 b4 that patch. Now shiva does this extra move that messes everything up. 🤦🤦🤦
Something U Can Beat Video Games forgot to mention about the Southers- don't try for air supremacy. They can dodge. a jumping kick and leave you wide open.
It'd be cool if after being sent back to do the last three stages you make it to him again and he actually makes you his right hand man in a secret ending.
Every bit of your advice in this video was good except for one. You should NOT use your Special Attack if you can beat a round without it - you get an extra 10,000 points in the top bonus for each one you held onto, and since some extra lives are given at score increments, that advice may actually cost someone getting a much-needed extra life later. There’s also an alternate infinite with the Round 5 twins - if you stay in a bottom corner, face away from them, hold the jump button, and whenever one of them jumps in to jump kick you, you hit attack and do a backwards kick, your attack will go through and theirs will be ignored. They never simultaneously do this attack - so the only way you die here is the timer.
an absoluter classic. The music is legendary. Can't wait till you do Streets of Rage 2! Blaze was my fave to use in this one, Skate in part 2, Zan in part 3.

Oh my god, this means UCBVG is going to do Streets Of Rage 2. Get ready for an auditory treat on that one. The Stage 1 theme is one of the best _in video gaming history_ and there's a cheeky hidden 1-up right at the start because the devs knew how hard the game actually was ;)
I don't remember what 2 buttons to push on the Sega Genesis version, press R on Nintendo 3DS, but you'll do sort of a roundhouse kick that comes in *Really* handy when enemies are behind you.
I remember playing the hell out of this with my friend back in the day, on his SegaCD that had the 4-in-1 pack-in, SoR1, Golden Axe 1, Revenge of Shinobi, and Columns, still 4 of the best games ever made IMO.
This game series is why i keep my old Sega Genesis around. I still got the rapid fire joysticks to play it on hardest. I still play two and three more than one. :)
And on Final Fight, you can only play 2 characters and they censored their female enemies, even the poor Poison has turned into a man. Street of Rage does what Final Fight don't. They've 3 playables characters and their female enemies aren't censored.
To get the bad ending, if both players reach Mr X, one of them has to choose Yes while the other says No, then Mr X will make you two fight to the death and the winner must then choose No and defeat Mr X
Nice video! I've been craving a nice 16-bit beat 'em up lately, and this is one of the few I have legitimate access to, so this guide's come along at just the right time for me!
i was a hitless speed runner back then 😅, Remember, I was 8 or nine, and i was playing, i took the spray at the beginning of the last level and carried it until the final boss, all the lvl hitless, what a great time...
There's another way to deal with stage 5 boss. The grappler is very susceptible to a very secret technique, If you press the jump and attack Buttons at the same time your character Will do a back attack( example, if your character is facing to the right they Will do an attack to the left). So my strategy is to keep to the left and facing left so the grappler Will move Faster to attack and wham surprise back attack. While shes getting up the jumper is usualy at the end of her Failed jump attack animation so there's a chance to grab her and throw/suplex. Great guide nonetheless, although there's a few missing points about weapons but overall great strategies for the bosses.
Quite the coincidence - I’ve just picked up the Japanese version bare knuckle. I played this one to death back in the day and know how to beat it (the twins are the biggest road block - mr x is hard but you have enough lives by then to just tank it). But funny you dropped this just as I ordered the game
Great video as always ! After 30 years of playing Streets of Rage i thought i knew it through and through, but i never knew Blazes's grapple finisher did 0 damage. That's a disgrace ! Also, the glitch to skip the final boss is super weird. I always wonder how people end up finding those. Thanks again and keep up the good work !
Thank you for covering the origins of a fantastic beat 'em up series! Also, can't wait for SOR 2! P.S. - What emu did you use for this footage? The audio sounds muted in the DAC or PSG channel. FM Sounds ok.
One of my favorite games and I also loved playing as Blaze, I remember her flip kick not doing any damage was bumming me out. I love beat em up games. I was a fan of them all. This begs the question if you can make a video for River City Ransom down the line?

Quite the coincidence - I’ve just picked up the Japanese version bare knuckle. I played this one to death back in the day and know how to beat it (the twins are the biggest road block - mr x is hard but you have enough lives by then to just tank it). But funny you dropped this just as I ordered the game
Excellent! thanks to your techniques against the bosses, I was able to beat the game. thanks a lot.
This is a great episode. Those handsome video-editing and script-writing dogs deserve extra treats.
Streets of rage 2 25 characters is the best version ever made for the sega genesis
I remember getting this game on my sega cd!!! Omg bashed so many enemies with my little sisters as a kid!!! It was so bad ass to beat this game!
Man I wish you had a guide for 3. trying to beat that game atm and f'ing heck. it's kicking my butt.
One of my favorite games and I also loved playing as Blaze, I remember her flip kick not doing any damage was bumming me out. I love beat em up games. I was a fan of them all. This begs the question if you can make a video for River City Ransom down the line?
i subscribe you bro, this video so usefull
I hope you do Streets of Rage 2 soon.
