In 1991 Sega's Genesis had gained a lot of momentum, but rival Nintendo was getting ready to launch their new Super NES in North America. Nintendo had secured the exclusive rights to Final Fight, the hottest arcade game of the time, and it would ONLY appear on the Super Nintendo.
Sega wasn't about to just let Nintendo win, and the game they designed to compete with Final Fight turned out to be better than the game they were imitating! Streets of Rage was the first entry in one of the greatest Beat 'em franchises of all time, and it all started here.
So how did Sega manage to "one up" Nintendo in this round of the ancient console wars? In today's episode we'll find out, then we'll do a deep dive on the gameplay where we'll learn:

I remember tearing through this game with my brother, only for him to try to betray me at the end, causing the bad ending. Whenever he wanted to play it normally, I betrayed him.

Streets of Rage 4 was an absolute miracle and I can't wait to see if there'll be a fifth.
I love Streets of Rage 4. Playing as each character is fun because you can try all their different combos and special moves.
I’m just getting into 4 after hating on it for years. I always thought SoR Remake was superior 🤷🏽♂️

I mean, it's gotta be objectively the best beat'em up series of all time at this point. SoR 4 propelled it to that status, for sure
There should be an enhanced SOR pack similar to what Konami did with Ninja Turtles
Streets of rage 2 will always be my favorite beat em up game of all time.
I might be in the minority but SoR1 is my favorite in the trilogy. Absolute masterpiece. On Round 8, notice how when you start the level and as you pass the first window, it is still night. The further you progress through the level and the closer you get the to the final crime boss, you'll see that daylight is starting to break, signifying Mr. X's hold of the city is coming to an end! The music on that last stage is brilliant; you can feel the desperation and tenseness of the enemy as he throws everything he's got at you, yet you can sense the finalization of the long, hard fought and selfless journey to dispel evil and free the people of terror is right behind that last door. I love it.
I love this game! I know the fan favorite is the sequel, but I have a massive fondness for this one. I played it every time I would visit one of my friends but never owned it until my grandparents were able to to get me a Genesis that came with the 6 in 1 pack, if anyone remembers that. Grew up pretty poor but anytime they got me a game I treasured it, and Streets of Rage was my go-to! Thanks for your hard work UCBVG, and Super Metroid when 😏
I was so mad when I played the 2nd one, got talked up on how good Max was, and then went back to the 1st one and wondered why Adam Hunter wasn't in the 2nd one.

Similarly I had 3 in one megadrive game that had Golden axe, streets of rage and revenge of shinobi on one cartridge. Fun times of being a mega drive owner, I have all these games on the mega drive collection on my PS5 :)
@@MartynJamieson9 I had the 3-in-1 cartridge too! That cartridge definitely spent more time plugged into the console than any other I owned 😅
Streets of Rage (and especially Streets of Rage 2) had terrific music. I love it!

Besides that, I do know of a few creators that have separate YT channels for 'clip content', so maybe that'd be something worth pursuing? (I think people usually post them on a separate channel for algorithm purposes; YT seems to like for you to keep posting the same kind of content, & if you have long-form & short-form content on the same channel, it gets a li'l cranky. Freakin' emotional computer algorithms, amirite?!)
I remember getting this on the Wii Virtual Console and having a blast playing it. The music was awesome and i loved the nightlife tech noir feel of the city. Been a fan of the franchise since. Blaze and Axel were my favorites.
Hell yeah brother! I see you beat the algorithm by releasing quality super mario content at the same time the movie was released. Genius. The subscriber jump was noticeable. Keep crushing it. Some of my earliest memories are watching you play video games. You could say I was your original fan. I got the live version of "U Can Beat Video Games" from you about 27 years ago.

@@KingofCrusher ...there was SMB movie released recently?? So his release of the SMW 2-part playthrough, at the same time there was a hecka lotta chatter about the SMB series/brand as a whole, likely contributed to a recent subscriber boost.
That said, I also came across this channel a while back (I think 2 years now? I'd have to check; it was well before the merch launch, I remember that) & I'm just wicked proud of how much his channel has grown *AND* that he's hasn't changed his format or personality as he's grown. It's kinda refreshing, tbh.

Beat the algorithm? Do you know what an algorithm is?
I remember my brother got a mega drive for his birthday when I was about 5 years old and I loved this, but my sister pulled it out of the wall like a week later to watch music videos on Saturday morning and broke it. Tbh i just want some sympathy for this loss 25 years ago.

I don't know how I am just now finding out about this channel, but this is, hands down, the **BEST** retro entertainment UA-cam channel in existence. I watch this while I code, I have it playing while going to sleep; I can watch them over and over. It's not a let's play, it's not a narration, it's not a guide, it's not a historical perspective, it's not a documentary, it's all of those things all at the same time. My hats off to you, sir.
Love this series! Started with 2 then went to 1 to 3. Happy that SoR 4 was made because it's an amazing game. I hope that there will be a 5th one. There's a fan made one that I enjoy a lot where it lets you pick your path and you can mix and match the levels from 1-3 it's an amazing and fun game. Can't wait for the next video🎉🎉

Half the games he covers ive beaten, like the Nes TMNT, but the other half I never beat are games I never payed attention to or knew existed.
Same, but he always brings some good info I didn't know and some strategies that I wish I knew back then.
I think many people consider SoR 2 to be an objectively-better game, but SoR 1 is still my favorite of the series. The soundtrack (especially that boss theme) is just too iconic to me. Also, SoR 1 has the best iteration of Blaze!
Another easy way to beat the Blaze clones (as Blaze) is to corral them both to one side of the screen. Once they are there, face Blaze in the opposite direction of them, and do your backwards-kick as soon as the jump-kicker is half-way through the apex of their kick, and/or when the grappler is in range. They will never be able to land a hit on you in this loop.
One of my favourite game series of all time. Done lots of playthroughs of SOR2 and Bomber Games remade version in particular.
I’ve probably put 1000 hours in that remake since it came out in 2011. Best fan game in history. Soooooo much incredible gameplay

OMG! I love this game soooooo much! I spent so many hours trying to beat it as a kid the big guys in the factory level kept killing me. I didnt beat it until 2012 when i watched a tips video and picked up gaming again on how to just punch slow to trap the enemies in a loop. By far the best side scrolling fight game ever!!!!

Until they did the recent patch that takes away shivas infinite combo. I got to lvl 82 b4 that patch. Now shiva does this extra move that messes everything up. 🤦🤦🤦

I was in the Final Fight camp as a kid, but the Etrian Odyssey series made me fall in love with Yuzo Koshiro's music, after checking out his earlier titles his work really makes them fantastic.
Street of Rages does what Final Fight don't.

I played this game so many times as a kiddo... but there was so many things in this Vid I never knew about... including the secret bad ending... which i'm SO glad is not the Canon one...

For the Abadede/Ultimate Warrior clone boss I used to just to do static jump kicks as he will keep running at you constantly
The only issue with that strategy is if a Galsia sneaks up on you when do do it
2014 i just played streets of rage 3 with my 6 yo cousin, she loved it, its cool watching her play the same games i played as a kid.
Oh my god, this means UCBVG is going to do Streets Of Rage 2. Get ready for an auditory treat on that one. The Stage 1 theme is one of the best _in video gaming history_ and there's a cheeky hidden 1-up right at the start because the devs knew how hard the game actually was ;)

Great video as always ! After 30 years of playing Streets of Rage i thought i knew it through and through, but i never knew Blazes's grapple finisher did 0 damage. That's a disgrace !
Also, the glitch to skip the final boss is super weird. I always wonder how people end up finding those.

One of my favorite games and I also loved playing as Blaze, I remember her flip kick not doing any damage was bumming me out. I love beat em up games. I was a fan of them all. This begs the question if you can make a video for River City Ransom down the line?
Every bit of your advice in this video was good except for one.
You should NOT use your Special Attack if you can beat a round without it - you get an extra 10,000 points in the top bonus for each one you held onto, and since some extra lives are given at score increments, that advice may actually cost someone getting a much-needed extra life later.
There’s also an alternate infinite with the Round 5 twins - if you stay in a bottom corner, face away from them, hold the jump button, and whenever one of them jumps in to jump kick you, you hit attack and do a backwards kick, your attack will go through and theirs will be ignored. They never simultaneously do this attack - so the only way you die here is the timer.
