For me, missile command reminds me of being 16 years of age ,and going to the pub downtown with my motorcycle helmet to prove that I was 18 !!!

This looks like such a better version than the 2600 one I grew up with.

Yes, it's too bad they couldn't fit the bombers. I can only go so far in that version, it gets too difficult for me on game 6b. I made the first challenge of 90K, but not 160K or 200K. I didn't play the arcade game much, and didn't get that version when I had Playstation.

I remember seeing this game for the first time in a café (the arcade version, of course) when I was 5. I begged my father to give me a coin to play. I did not know what I was supposed to do, the instructions were in English (a language I did not know at that time), but I learned the meaning of "fire" (it was written on a button) that day and I kept on pushing it repeatedly until "Game over" appeared on the screen, few seconds later.

Good video! and review of this game! I always liked this version of this game over the Atari 2600 version of it!

I remember the story in the 2600 instruction manual described it as an interplanetary war with aliens. Apparently they didn’t want to scare us kids that it was really based on a real life scenario of a possible nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union…

I loved my Atari 800. I liked Missile Command, but I preferred Star Raider. A few years later, I replaced the 800 with a Vectrex. I sold my Vectrex in the 90s and have never stopped kicking myself for that poor decision.

When playing Missile Command Recharged (The updated one, not the recalled one from 2020), I find it plays the best with a mouse when on a computer or a trackpad on the Steam Deck. So much better than using an analogue thumbstick!
Same is also true with the old ones. You can't beat a mouse, trackpad or trackball when it comes to precision in Missile Command!

Highly recommend Missile Command Recharged on all the current platforms, if you get the chance.

The people in those cities must be going mental buying bread and milk while that's going on.

This is the version I played as a kid and I just picked up the Atari 400 Mini. Now, I’m not wondering if a trackball would work with that.

This version is far superior to the 5200 version by nature of the fact that you don’t have to use the 5200 joystick. This is my favorite version of the game on a classic Atari console.

Got an XEGS so the game is built in, have to detach the keyboard to get access to it (basic starts otherwise), never tried to re-attach the keyboard to see if any keyboard commands would work though.

No need to detach the keyboard. Just hold down the yellow button “Select” as you boot up, and it will bypass BASIC and whatever other peripherals you have plugged into it.

@@markstahl1464 Thanks, still somewhat new to Atari computers. This XEGS I got for $25 because they couldn't get a clean signal out of it. Turned out the power supply wasn't providing enough volts so just needed to replace that.
Update: Worked like a charm, Missile Command played quite good with the Track-ball once I hit Control T. Thanks everyone.

@Trialwolf Wow! What a steal!!! That’s awesome. 😎 The XEGS is quite the quirky, intriguing little system. I learn new things about it day by day, which really helps to maintain my interest. I highly recommend getting a Fujinet. It emulates all of the peripherals and will act as a pseudo-hard drive if you’re interested in getting into a little BASIC programming. It also opens you up to nearly the entire game library, including a ton of modern homebrews. I’m not sure why, but I really enjoy reading the news on my XEGS in the morning! There are several cool apps you can use, even Wikipedia! That’s great that your trackball works. I have a 2600 and a 5200 trackball, but neither work properly.

I like to imagine that someone showed this to President Ronald Reagan to convince him to fund SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative, a.k.a. Star Wars), but he didn't see that you can't win, and eventually you lose all your cities!
Too bad there wasn't a good game or video simulation that might have inspired funding for the SSC (Super-conducting Super Collider).
