The Battlezone 3D vector graphics were awesome in 1980. In 1987, simulated blocky vector graphics were not so special. I would agree that the 2600 tank games are better.
I think this one is pretty fun. I actually think Atari is in the process of buying Battlezone back from Rebellion, right now. We may get a Battlezone: Recharged if I am right.
Agree... Robot Tank for the 2600 is my favorite from this genre. Nothing here gets me excited to get this.
A port of the 5200 version is also available for the 800 series.
Good video and review of this game! I remember playing the Atari 2600 version of this game! I do have the XL/XE version too! I like the Atari 2600 version better!
Tank you for the review! (spelling intended 🙂). If this was released in 82/83, would view it more favorably. Looking at what else was in the market at the time, this should have been considered a "Battlezone Classic" release even back then
I would second preferring Robot Tank as well. I think it would've been cooler to either give better bitmap graphics, or try the vector effect that the similar Stellar 7 had.
At Free Play Florida a couple years ago, i got to play what I think is a homebrew mod called Battlezone II, using a similar engine and look, but much faster paced, and with powerups! A bit on the easy side, but I still enjoyed it, and wish it was more common.
On a side note, ever played Stellar 7 or Spectre on Macintosh? Those feel like spiritual successors of Battlezone to me, with bigger enemy and weapon varities, and their own unique personalities. I like those even more.
I have not, although there is a chance I have a loose Sega CD disc of it in a binder somewhere.
I never cared for the "Faux wireframe" look this port has. The low resolution makes me very aware that I'm looking at a badly faked effect. This is why I liked the 2600 port so much.
Late releases are usually pretty "meh" (unless they are just re-releases of old games for the XE).
Nice Gobot!
Reminds me of stellar 7 for pc
I liked the original arcade version of this game. The 8bit version here is just bland and not really good imo.
