I wouldn't trust this guy, buying anything in this world is about personal preference. If I were you I'd try out all of the trucks on the market.
Its an awesome truck. This guy is very short. If your a small guy it will feel small. But if your average height, you will love it.

I own a 2007 5.7 tundra. It's my weekend vehicle. Some points. Gloved hands = need for big buttons. Long trips with family/friends for snowboarding / mountain biking / hunting = need for 1000 cup holders. Yes the interior feels super cheap. But with over 200k on the odometer, you don't buy one of these for the luxury. You buy one for the reliability. Great job Toyota!

I love the fact Toyota keeps the Tundra strong and powerful with big styling. Beast engine awesome off road with great reliability. Can't lose with this thing but I'm sure there's a new one right around the corner this model has been on sale for a while old but still they have perfected this model.
It's a shame Toyota gave it a weak flimsy frame and can't manage to squeeze even 17 mpg highway out of it. It's such a floppy flimsy gas chugging hunk of junk.

@@hochhaul Don't trigger the cultists like that. That frame was made to let the whole fucking truck twist to conform to the terrain you're treking, duh! The Tundra is like a gamma goat. They didn't do that because they were trying to mitigate the rust problems by using old Ford frame technology. No chance.
Your auto reviews are my favorite, hands down. I enjoy the review the most when you have it raised up on the lift and actually look at the frame and moving bits.
I don't think the big chunky dials/handles/shifter are as much for intimidation as much as they are for fitting your work-gloved hands in/on/around

Just bought a 2021 Tundra 4x4. Love it.
I have a tundra! shifting is super smooth! Never had an mechanical problem! My friends with fords, Gmc's ect have all been to the shop for transmissions and various other problems! Oh and yeah its made in america also!
I'll take smooth shifts over fast shifts, because of the reliability here.

I drove a 2014 Tundra for a week and I really liked it. Yes it was massive compared to what I'm used to with the FR-S it was a different world of driving for me. I had no complaints other than the odd gas gauge they put on it, it wasn't divided by quarters it was a really odd gauge divided by 1/3's but they weren't even if I remember correctly. The one thing that I would have to get with the truck is the reverse camera, that is so helpful when backing close to haul away some furniture. It was great it already had a nice bedliner and my favorite part about the interior was it was a solid mat there was no carpet to worry about keeping clean, you could spray the floor down if you wanted. All in all I would buy one, being that I'm 5'6" you could say that there was a slight little guy syndrome but it's a great utility vehicle I would certainly use.

I am a tad confused about the "it feels big" critique because it has better visibility than other half-tons. I find it easier to maneuver than the domestics for that reason, so for me the notion that it seems big outside and *is* big inside is a feature, not a bug.

I own a 2015 Tundra and I agree with many of the things said. It's freakin huge but that is why I like it. It's the modern day version of Walt Griswald's wagon in the first vacation movie. That being said I love the Toyota quality, huge cab and beefy engine. The center screen does kind of suck, the drivetrain is a little dated, and IMO it could use more high end features and gadgets like the new F150. I would take my $38,000 Tundra over a $10-20k more 2015 F-150 anyday. And resale on Toyota's is very high. Great review.

@@acmotifs Sold it in 2017 with 50k miles for almost what I paid for it. Bought a 2012 F-150 Raptor because I found a super clean one for cheap. I loved my Tundra but the Raptor was just too cool. I still own in and am considering buying another Tundra again.

Good review ! I am glad that you are not biased towards tundra . You pulled out the drawbacks of tundra as well as its perks . I own 1794 edition and of course it doesn't have all that fancy stuff like airbags , wifi stereo , lane assist and all bunch electronics that real truck driver don't "need" it. What truck driver who tows and hauls need reliability and power . And its got that .
+Jet Ski Thanks, this was one of our first truck reviews and in retrospect we'd change it a bit. But I felt like it was fair. Its the truck you want long term. Reliable just has quirks. Thanks fot feed back. Its still a go to vehicle.
I guess you could say its "a lot of money", but its the same price as a properly equipped midsize SUV, and cheaper than a full size SUV like an explorer... fuel mileage about the same... and resale better... so what's the problem. The tundra will stand up longer and give you better resale, but might cost you a bit more at the pumps than other pickups...

Great review, I am 6'2 200lbs so the size of the truck fits me well. I actually feel right at home sitting in the tundra. Some of the other guys like Ford and Chevy, I actually feel to big in those. Chevy being the smallest feeling truck in my opinion. I also have 3 kids and the back seat size is perfect for them. I personally don't mind the "outdated" tech in the tundra, I got a truck... I expect it to look drive and feel like a truck. If you are looking for a truck for truck purposes, I highly recommend the tundra. Oh yeah the MPG is pretty bad compared to Chevy or GMC... cant comment on Ford or Ram as I have not owned either of those trucks.

I just am about to hit 100k miles on my 2008 Tundra and thought, "hey maybe I will get a newer one" But... after seeing videos like this, I just got a new double DIN stereo that had Android/Apple play and supported a backup camera. So now I think I am good for another 100k. The only thing wrong with the truck is the scratches, dings and dents farm living and parking lot asshats delivered. All the buttons, switches, levers, etc work and it is mechanically perfect. Only expense: gas, tires, oil, air and cabin filters.
Love my 2008 5.7 Crew. The mechanic said it best with he’d buy this truck out of all the rest. Tun-meri-dra 🇺🇸💪

these trucks hold there value unlike America trucks I have a dealer and trust me when I say they sell very good it's a good thing these trucks aren't bought like chevy or ford which loose there value faster than these tundra I have to give it a thumps up for tundra
I like to see a "non truck guy's" opinion, because most truck guys prefer just one brand and hate on everything else. I have on had Rams, but am curious about what else is out there. Nice job!

its a ram its got a hemi that has no resale value and no hood transmissions and has more little things that break like the air suspension. toyota is the best 100%
Resale value is same as all the other american fullsize trucks. Transmission? Its got a ZF 8HP70, same you'll find in BMW, Audi, Rolls Royce, etc. Very strong and reliable transmission. It ain't like the previous torqueflites. The GM 6l80 and Ford 6r80 transmissions in the same class are directly based on ZF transmissions. More things that break? You have trim levels for a reason, choose what you want. Tundras are great trucks, but don't talk out your ass buddy.
MrBlurberries man the whole Chrysler group has been hated on for their terrible reliability and that has shown in countless reliability ratings. It has even gotten to the point where new rams, dodges and jeeps are getting discounted heavily from msrp new from dealers

The RAM actually has the worst resale value of all of the full size pickups, and Tundra has the best (by far).

Comments made were all valid points... except for the fact that mostly everything expressed was designed that way on purpose for utility not vanity. Extra large steering wheel, door handles, shift knob, controls were designed like that to be managed with gloves on (any toyota demo's explain all of that)... for that they hit the mark. Trucks are large scale to do work (tow, move, etc...). They are not fast, they are not built for handling, they are designed to operate best under load as thats there whole reason for existence. It wouldn't be right or fair to compare there characteristics to that of a car... Would you wear work boots to go jogging ? Then give a review at how inadequate they were ?
It's not a knock on the truck it just feels excessive. Some of it becomes overbearing, but you know what, you are right its functional.

Nobody in there right mind would say that Tundra is unreliable. It is definitely not the best truck but it is the most reliable truck. Ram has the features and by far the best ride. But you should never buy a Ram. Ram is a lease. The Tundra is a buy.
¡Love the way you express yourself. After seeing your recent TRD Pro review I decided to come and watch this one too. I agree with you on the things that need updating. I went and drove one too. I found the exhaust note bothersome at highway speeds. I like a nice V8 burble but this vehicle drones at highway speeds and it's annoying.

I like all the three American pickups but having owned a brand new dodge which I had to do a lemon law on it. This truck is expensive like everything today but reliability and holding valve this is a definite no brainer.
That quilted upholstery just kills the whole hyper-masculine bits of this truck. It's like putting a doily on a case of beer.

As far as mileage, it's how one drives the truck (5.7L) If I baby it on the freeway, keeping it under 65MPH, I can sneak out 20 miles to the gallon. City driving 14 to 16 if one doesn't race it to the next light.

savagegeese Towing my 26' travel trailer I get 11 to 11.5 MPG. I do have some issues with this video review only because he is not a truck person. One buys a truck to haul and tow. I bought it to tow my RV to Alaska next year. Needed something that didn't break down.
***** If all you did was tow and haul none of us disagree we'd all buy a Tundra. You don't find many if any that disagree with the simplicity and reliability. The truck community is difficult so many people don't use them for what that are for which is why you have so many lipstick editions. In fairness this generation Tundra is long in the tooth compared to the newer competition. Looking forward to Toyotas new generation. Lets hope they dont over complicate it.
savagegeese If one wanted a "lipstick" Tundra you have the 1794. I went with the middle of the model line with the Limited. (SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum and 1794). Might as well be comfortable with the leather seats on the way to Alaska. Off to VT. for 22 days of camping shortly.

Guys will fly a big @ss American flag from the bed of a "American" truck that was made in Mexico. The Tundra's engine is built in Alabama, final assembly for the truck is in Texas. Most reliable full size truck Tundra. Ready to drag 10k lbs behind it or tote 1700lbs in the bed.
I'm thinking of getting 2012 Tundra... is there a difference between tow package vs tow hitch? I've seen ads with both and it's confusing me.
+YakMan NC The tow package includes a larger radiator, auxiliary oil & transmission coolers, heavy-duty battery & alternator, enhanced sway control technology, trailer wiring & connectors, and, of course, the hitch receiver. On current models, that tow package and an integrated trailer brake controller are standard equipment.

I own a 2018 Platinum and it is one killer truck. It looks better than any ford, chevy or dodge. It is one nice truck with plenty of power. With a 430 gear in the rear, it is made to get out of the whole and pull a load when ask to. As for me and my Tundra, top of the line in trucks. PERIOD
This is a truck that is targeted to people that don’t use the bed for work like I do. I am buying a double cab with 8 foot bed for my work and ATV. A short box 5 foot bed is for golf clubs and beer.

I love my 2015 Toyota Tundra. It rides nice, I have enough space for the kids in back, I haul lots of things. This truck is beautiful. I get 16 miles to the gallon. Im 5'10 women who loves her truck. :) made in America.

390merc65 did you know that Toyota is moving their HQ to Plano Texas and are bringing 10,000 more jobs to the economy? Toyota is more american than any other truck brand. Go look and compare windows stickers on a Tundra and a Silverado. You will find that the Silverado uses more foreign parts than the Toyota, and is also assembled in MEXICO.
390merc65 +Brock Spillman - Tacoma's are built in Texas, as well as the Tundra, same plant. Also, we're speaking to the actual components of the Tundra, which is more than the Big 3, who import a majority of their parts in their trucks, but do assemble them in the USA. I'm not sure about the HQ thing so I can't comment on that. In terms of the Fords out selling, absolutely correct, the price point of the F150 makes them very attractive to the work site companies. We're seeing a large influx of them coming in on trade and companies switching to Tundras, so this trend seems to be moving more towards reliability and dependability rather than initial purchase price. Overall cost of ownership is coming in to play now with the way markets are.
390merc65 We heard it all before. Fact is that the Toyota Tundra is a great truck. Another fact is that the profits go to people who own shares of the company. Those people could be anywhere in the world. At Ford it is no diferent. So really, don't talk about money leaving the country when you don't have a clue where the investors live. Do the American people really care where their money goes? No, because Americans shop at Walmart and Walmart gets all their stuff out of China and that is where the money goes. The people who shop at Walmart are the ones undermining the American economy.
I watch a shitload of auto reviews on this site and many of them are very gimmicky and biased. I thought your presentation was refreshing. Also, because you're a "car guy" you approached this particular vehicle without the macho truck bias that is prevalent (Nathan Adlan). As a dad that wants to sell this to his wife as a family car, your insight is appreciated and valid. Great work.

His review didnt come across to me as biased but rather a guy who doesnt know or appreciate trucks for the purposes people buy them. Big is what most look for in a truck, hauling people and gear. Interior design? Again, its a truck, not a luxury car. I have an 08 tundra trd limited with 187000 on it and the reliability has been stellar. All I have done is change fluids, 2 sets if new tires, soon to be 3, and 1 set of brake pads at all 4 corners. Never a check engine light, breakdown or anything. I dont know one person driving a truck from the big 3 who hasnt had to soend thousands keeping their vehicles running. Mine is also worth more in trade in and loan value. For me to have bought a comparable truck from one of the big 3 at the time I would have spent the same or more than I spent on mine, so with the purchase price, lack of thousands in necessary repairs and higher resale value I will come out 7-10 thousand better than any of my friends that own a truck from the big 3.

I always wondered why it seems like 80% of vehicles on the road in my area are trucks and I still do. I'll never understand the truck mentality. Unless you actually use it as a utility vehicle frequently and not just a daily driver you're probably just compensating for something.
It's something that doesn't make any sense on paper but makes alot of people immensely happy. Like driving a jeep.
Thrillcekr I've never had a problem getting to work/school in my car here in northeast Iowa. How many times have you really needed to haul something. The few times that you do, it wouldn't be hard to find a friend who owns one. I'd much rather borrow a friends, pay for gas + $50 than be stuck with super low mpg.
Hmm The best trucks handle like trucks. Had a job driving a Ford F350 7.3L. Had to make deliveries in a major city. That thing was so big it hurt. But you could put a lot of commerical grade cabinets (casework) in the bed. Talk about a rough ride. Vinyl bench seat too. My Tundra is working luxury for me.

I LOVED the filming of this review, the video footage is the best I've seen, almost BBC quality lol, your sense of humour is great, but the review...most people watching this review are interested in trucks, but you just bring us down by expressing your negativity about the truck's size (which is what truck people actually like!).

I have a 2007 TRD Double Cab with the 5.7L. Bought it in 2006 still going strong! it is a beast. Only the raptor gives it a test at the line and yes it burns through gas but hey its a truck. I love it and will keep on loving it. I cannot wait for the 2021 3rd Gen to see how they will improve this monster. I love your candid reviews keep them coming.

Great review. Some different perspectives. Trucks and cars used to cost the same even though a truck had a ton more steel. Now that they are trying to make trucks that ride like cars, with all the same features, truck prices have gone way too high. I would rather have a truck without the fancy stuff for cheaper. I just bought a 2016 Tundra TRD Pro. $49k to drive it off the lot, wow. I bought the Toyota for resale value and reliability. Search for Edmunds top 10 made in America Trucks. Turns out Chevys and GMs come off assembly lines in Mexico. The only truck with the engine, transmission, body, and assembly made 100% in America is the Toyota Tundra.
I will say one more thing, the stock tires really suck... and they make the ride suck too, i swapped them for bfg at2's and ride improved so much. the Deuler HT were jittery and seemed to feel the road too much, but mpg did suffer no question.

The thing about the Chevy/Ford fanboys hating this truck no matter what is:
If Toyota keeps making a decent, reliable truck, they'll eventually win those fanboys over.
I was diehard GM until they went with AFM and started eating lifters. (And as late as 2015, they were STILL eating lifters because it just happened to a friend of mine's 2015.)
So I switched to Ford about 6 years ago and it hasn't been a whole lot better. The mod motors had spark plug issues, all KINDS of timing related issues, phaser issues and the one I dealt with personally: broken exhaust manifold studs out the ass.
The Ecoboosts have also had issues with water collecting in the intercooler. The 5.0s have even had some phaser issues, too.
Looking at everything available on the market today, this once GM fanboy/Ford fanboy is ready to buy something that won't keep me up at night worrying about every little sound I hear coming from the engine bay.
And if GM, specifically, keeps it up with the AFM crap they keep doubling down on, they'll be in trouble again. My BIL used to race Chevy's as a hobby but has gone through three engines in his Silverado due to AFM grenading his valvetrain. He'll never buy GM again and neither will I as long as they're pushing that junk.

But after reading engineering information by my brother engineers working on friction reduction at BELL CANADA I now have the Friction Reduction and cleaning formula worked out on 2 test cars for 3 years.
I can not only reduce the 27% of friction in all motors I can keep the engine clean of carbon and sludge while raising compression and HP and.....MPG.
My cavalier went from 322 highway at best as per 60 mph to 43.3 in the same conditions with friction reduction.
Ask me for the formula and I will share it .
I will be retiring and buying the 5.7 to pull our 21 escape trailer for 15 years over mountians and into valleys to camp and explore.
I will add the ROAD ARMOUR BUMPER for texters and deer and bush but that's it except for the cone racks by AMERICAN.
I would buy one in an instant if they kept the 5.7 power plant, shaved 500 lbs off and improved fuel economy. Oh yeah, and release a new generation of this truck already!!

I do find my Tundra is searching for gears.. and i'm not sure why. the downhill assist or whatever its called kind of annoys me.. i kindda like that free mpg i gain on a hill, so i find myself lightly touching the throttle to let it coast rather than slow the truck...
+666dynomax you are doing the right thing by doing that , thats the only way to trick the computer , but lets not forget the huge advantage in the winter time about that engine retarder. I personally lost a second gen Tundra 2 years ago coming down on a icy highway ..just lightly touched the brake and i slowly started spinning and end up slamming against the rail ....the truck was a write off ...my baby was gone..2004 Limited double cab fully accessorized ..

Yea I thought the same thing about my 4th gen dodge ram that had the hemi until I bought a 13 tundra. Glad I ditched that pile of crap. Couldn't be happier in my Tundra.
