Here's a little background. Scarborough Fair is a centuries-old song of a person longing for a love that can never be. That was a popular song genre of the time. If you notice, each thing he requests from his lover is something that's impossible. Simon and Garfunkel took this and made it a protest of the Vietnam War by adding a second lyric line in the background like an echo. Give it a second listen and you'll get a lot more out of it. ❤
Excellent explanation.
The canticle comes from side of a hill which is an earlier song by Paul Simon
Do you have any background info on their song, "Whiter Shade of Pale"? I'd love to know what those lyrics mean!
That is Procul Harum's song.@@TruthTroubadour-xi9cc
The meaning of the herbs, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme have been debated for ages and still open to debate. But, from my readings in medieval times parsley was a symbol of death & rebirth; sage, for immortality & wisdom; rosemary for remembrance; and thyme to give courage.
I think when people at your age love this music so much that you are reincarnates from the 60's second generation of cool. I so appreciate you
One of the original lyrics from hundreds of years ago goes;
"Love imposes impossible tasks,
But none more so than any would ask."
Simon and Garfunkel arranged this version of the traditional, centuries-old English folk song; and combined it with Canticle as a counter melody. The result is pure magic.
Scarborough Fair is a medieval English folk song back in the 14th century from a young man in love with his lover,he was tasks to do some impossible things so he can be with his lover.
An appreciation of music is one of the greatest gifts God has given his children.
Ha, Ha you got the feeling i got as i was 14 years old and heard this song the first Time. Now im 65 and the feelings are the same. Greeting from Germany🤩🤩
Quite possibly, the greatest piece of music to come out of the 20th century.
Two distinct songs, actually, woven together like a wreath of grass and flowers for the springtime..place it above your door to let all know your love and joy for the beauty of life.
SF is a tad older than that
You're not alone, there are many out there who don't know the early work of Simon and Garfunkel. The beauty is your reaction, well over 50 yrs later, you get it.
Yes they made this in protest of the Vietnam war however this art form of ballad tells the tale of the soldiers that never came home.
I grew up with Simon & Garfunkel. It's great to watch someone discover them for the first time!
truth
Why did you just hear about them now? Because it was time, dear heart's sister. The universe unspools the weave in it's own time, and now was yours. Your joy, that the song helped you put out into the world, was needed. Your reaction brought tears of happiness to my eyes. Thank you.
Sarah im beginning to believe that when it comes to music there's nobody better than you 👍
THIS is your first S&G song, after all these months?!? You have a deep rabbit hole to explore here Sarah...
I really do! 😅
Aren’t they great? Simon and Garfunkel have just the best harmonies ever.
Absolutely
I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Sound Of Silence", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.
such good songs
@@yellowcat1310
Here, here.
All songs mentioned are absolute gems 👍.
So many brilliant. I am a Rock, The Boxer, and A Most Peculiar Man win by a hair. Sometimes.
This is a very old song that goes back in England to at least the 1600s.
My lady, your ability and talent to know what great music is is second to none Simon and Garfunkel s song Scarborough fair is a true classic. This song and and many more a played in the movie aThe Graduate with Dustin Hoffman and Catherine Ross I highly recommend you watch the movie... Your fan James Zrenjad Desjardins.
This is what true art is for. To move us emotionally, even to the point of changing us for the better. The music & lyrics of Simon & Garfunkle fall into that category ..... true art ...
Very well said!
@@neonennui Thank you!
WOW! I've loved this song for 50 years, first time reading the lyrics...So profound...
That was worth watching twice.
Aww thanks Falcon 😊
One of their most beautiful songs!! They have so many. Please try Kathy’s Song. So beautiful. 😊
Thanks pa! I actually have 😅 here’s a link ua-cam.com/video/tEnfPSZUxzc/v-deo.htmlsi=XXvlrF6WfEIEfhjw
This song is like a recipe for success
There are songs that are very difficult to cover, this is one of them.
Like many others here, I grew up with their music and still find myself singing it now, often without thinking. To see your appreciation as a young woman is wonderful. It shows a LOT about YOU! Stay open with your love of music and you will discover many beautiful pieces. Btw, Art Garfunkel’s son is also performing, reminds me a lot of his dad and, from what I understand, has often performed with his dad. Paul Simon’s career is storied. 😊 I bet they would love to see your appreciation of their classic work.
A live version with Andy Williams is also a good historical video. I expect it was on his show.
There are only 2 voices........Simon & Garfunkel. Magic
Here is another music duo that has a great deal of music available......far better than the "stars" of today. Weren't we lucky ?(I'm 74). So much wonderful music in the 60's 70's & early 80's. Never again sadly
Simon & Garfunkel were the real deal. So many beautiful songs. 🙂
Magical ancient song, dressed in ultimate vocal finery by Simon & Garfunkel. You just can’t get better than this.
Popular music has a long way to go to catch up to where we were fifty years ago, let’s face it.
Paul Simon had the war part of this song in his catalog in a song entitled "The Side of a Hill." S&G contrasted the gentleness and long for love of the Scarborough Fair part of the song with the war theme of "The Side of the Hill." On that very same album, they did a similar thing, contrasting the Christmas carol "Silent Night" with a broadcast of the starkness of a 6 o'clock news broadcast.
This was truly magical, Sarah! ❤ Simon and Garfunkel were remarkable, both lyrically and musically! For another journey into heaven, I'll recommend again Art Garfunkle's solo recording of "All I Know." Garfunkle obviously had one of the most gorgeous tenor voices of the era, just angelic and expressive.
As always, thank you for this, it was a glorious start to my day. 🥰😇🌹💕
Or maybe zDisney Girls.
I second the choice of "All I know"
Simon and Garfunkel were icons producing so much wonderful, wonderful music. Folk Rock heroes. To hear your entrancement is joyous and are we not lucky to have all this recorded for posterity?
Paul and Art were two great troubadour's of harmonizing lyrics, bringing their listeners great pleasure. Paul is a very talented singer/songwriter, penning such greats as 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'Sounds Of Silence', and 'Homeward Bound'. I do hope you react to those and others. Really enjoyed your reaction!
Thanks a lot! I definitely will
@@SarahDengler Yes, you should Sarah! And add "The Boxer", "El Condor Pasadenas", "America" and "I Am A Rock" among others! Thank you for the joy you bring to us with your reactions!
One of my most favorites. So are you.
Scarborough fair is one of the songs of a soundtrack written by these two great musicians. The soundtrack was written for the iconic movie 'The Graduate ' starring a young Dustin Hoffman and co star Catherine Ross. I highly recommend you watch this film. You wil l love it.....your friend and big fan of yours my beautiful lady..... James Zrenjad Desjardins
One of my childhood favorites! I use to have this song on vinyl as a child in the 1960’s! It was a well worn record!
Gorgeous, isn't it? The way their voices blend is incredible. One of my favorites, along with so much of their work.
My favorite Simon & Garfunkel song 👍🏻
I see why! It’s an absolute delight!
@@SarahDengler I first heard it on a show called *The Wonder Years* about a kid’s childhood in the 60’s, I was a kid too and was struck by this song, it was a beautiful scene too. Look for it if you want 👍🏻
It's so haunting
El Condor Pasa is an absolute must. you'll have goosebumps on your goosebumps!!!
Can’t wait! Thanks ☺️
I was born in 1976. My seventeen-year-old father had this song stuck in his head the day I was born and asked my mother to name me Thyme. She said no to it being my first name, but they kept it as my middle name. I grew up with a deep love of music and have a special place in my heart for this song. 🌿💚
everything these guys did was awesome. Art Garfunkel is an amazing singer. and piano player too.
Watch the film "the Graduate" its a classic and they did the soundtrack. My favourite is "The Sound Of Silence"...... Or maybe "The Boxer" from "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
What a beautiful, mystical reaction, Miss Sarah. I was young when this came out. It is so wonderful to see another young generation fall in love with, and be moved by them. It still brings tears to my eyes, as you dont know what else to do with the emotions it evokes.
Thank you!
(You should also give a listen to 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters')
Thanks Judy, I surely will 🙏😊
Simon and Garfunkel were my 1st concert in 1967. They were a treasure. I was heartbroken when they split up.
Which time, lol
I absolutely love this song. And I loved watching you react to it.
Thanks for the reaction. So much great music came out when i was young. They are artist with a gift, I miss the creativity we used to have, where did it go?
To lamentations like this, I will always hold up 90s alt/grunge (Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, even Tool), and modern genres like Chillwave, 80s Synthwave, and Lo-Fi/Jazz Hop. The artistry is there, you just might not find the genres to your personal taste. Jack White is another modern legend, and his associated acts are also very good.
I can't believe I almost forgot Radiohead. Every bit as talented, impressive, and experimental as the Pink Floyd catalogue, IMO.
And my other favorite, somewhat contemporary example is The Decemberists. True artists of story and sound. Their discography is quite varied, but I'd start with their early stuff. A few (such as Eli the Barrow Boy) even remind me of the caliber of Scarborough Fair.
S&G were the voice of a generation and still resonates today.
Thanks!
Thanks so much 😊🙏
Two songs playing together... incredible stuff.... love and war... the best duo ever...
First time watching your channel but I'd agree with "like something from a fairytale". Something truly magical happened with popular music in the 60s. I was born in 1967 so I missed seeing it myself but I was so lucky growing up with all that music in the 70s. Lovely video 😊.
Truly one of the most beautiful songs! I love your reactions, so honest and pure!
Loved your reaction to this, partly because I reacted the same way almost 60 years ago when I heard it the first time and thought it was the most beautiful sound I ever heard.
Nice. This song is like 800 years old. :)
Enlightful reaction! -It's actually 2 songs blended together to change the meaning of both.
Thank you for the song it was beautiful.
Grandma and grandpa already knew what was good.
It's nice that people like you make sure she isn't forgotten.
This is actually a cover of a traditional English ballad.
Beautiful reaction! Thank You. Just to funny you listened to it "twice" Every time i play this song, i play it twice too😀
Me too!!!
I get the chills just watching you! You’re so precious. 😄
Paul Simon is really one of the greatest still living songwriters, he created timeless masterpieces. I think you should also listen to his work after the time with Art Garfunkel when he worked on world music, e.g. on his album Graceland where he played together with fantastic musicians from South Africa. So many amazing pieces on this record with this wonderful African sounds, this album is really a must!
So beautiful i remember mine true love thanks Sara for share
Glorious, yes; you are not alone in that feeling.
My wife loved Simon and Garfunkel, 59th street bridge song, America. . . .El Condor Pasa.. . . and Crosby Stills and Nash. . . . .the album "So Far" .. . .
My favorite! Thank you for sharing your reaction with us. Your videos are a delight to watch. 🙂🙃🙂🙃
Patty-I totally agree with you. I saw them perform live back in the 90's. It was a night I'll never forget. They became popular while I was in high-school. My sister and I used to sing with the records all the time. Their voices blended so well together. Unfortunately, they no longer sing together. Try listening to the Boxer or Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Great channel.
I feel you. It’s amazing. I grew up listening to this song and it never gets old. I recommend listening to all of their songs. You’ll love it.😊
I so feel you, sister :) Even though I've listened to their music even since I was a teenager this song still brought tears to my eyes when I listened to it a few weeks ago.. it's absolutely one of my all time favorites - And let me tell you that it's been a joy to witness your musical journey here on your channel. You genuinely seem like a beautiful human being inside and out and I love your sound mindset, sensitivity, radiant smile and pretty much everything else about you. I wish more people were like you.
Thanks so much for the kind words 😊🙏
I grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel. Please listen to
Mrs Robinson. I love your reactions as it reminds me of when I first listened to it 45 years ago.❤
Hi. I just wanted to say that it's kind of a blessing that you're just hearing this now. I've been hearing the song for years, but when I first heard it I was a kid. I had no idea what they were singing, I was just getting into the sound of it. It must be intense to understand it all as an adult when you first hear it.
Now you know why us old folks hate modern music
I don't quite hate it, but man we have been so blessed to have grown up with such huge musical creativity and revolution. I always wonder where today's musicians are during this time of social and political unrest.
Don't hate. Appreciate.
@@sisterpamop - agree with your comment "we were blessed" growing up in the 70s and 80s. We had, and listened to, great hard rock, pop, folk music, mellow music etc. We actually introduced the "world" to Rap music! "Rappers Delight" and "Rapture" We were definitely a diverse listening community! Haha
Most modern music seems to have a veil of plastic where music from the 60s and 70s was more honest
@@andywatts8654 - True! But 80's music was awesome too. We were so lucky being teens in the 80's! Great tunes😀
Thank you, Sarah.... I had not listened to that song in forty years! I had forgotten how wonderful the arrangement was.
Love your reaction as always, Sarah! There's a huge catalog of great material from Simon and Garfunkel, others have mentioned several songs to go to next, you can't go wrong with any of them. Also, I'm noticing more and more what a great singing voice you have as you sing along with portions of the songs a few times recently. I think it's time to give you another "Thanks" for all your good work.
Thank you so ´much Rod! you shocked me! truly appreciate it😇
When this came out, I was actually proud for our entire generation. It seemed such an amazing artistic accomplishment, comparable to anything that has ever been done in history.
American Music - ❤❤❤ !
Sarah, you must watch the movie'The Graduate, all songs in this movie are from these two talented men
Paul Simon picked this up from the English folk singer Martin Carthy in the ‘60s. Carthy’s version has more verses (and makes more sense), but this is truly beautiful.
I first heard this song in a village here Africa fifty years ago,i loved the song so much i actually play it on guitar now plus other S&G beautiful songs(S&G are well known in Kenya)❤❤
Simon and Garfunkel are sublime. I saw Paul Simon live ten years ago, and he still had it.
Four immaculate albums, and then they called it a day.
If you like Simon and Garfunkel, listen and react to their song, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and you’ll cry it’s such a beautiful love song..
The song was about a Scottish soldier who went to war in a foreign land and knew he was going to be killed
He asks his former lover to get a piece of land to bury him. The herbs were traditionally buried with corpse and the cambric shirt was a type of seamless linen shroud used way back then
Once knowing that the song makes a bit more sense
That makes sense. But why an acre for burial, especially in the sand? Don't think they could weave a seamless garment. I think he used to live there and she thwarted him so he left. How is she supposed to harvest with leather?
Now bitter and still hurt, he sends this message to mock her. As to say, you had your chance, I wish you well.
"Parsley, often associated with death and rebirth, may symbolize the longing for a fresh start or a new beginning. Sage, a symbol of wisdom, could represent an intellectual search for clarity and understanding. Rosemary, known for its healing properties, may represent the hope for healing within oneself or a relationship. Thyme, with its ties to courage and strength, could symbolize the bravery required to face challenges in love."
So, I have moved on, see it all differently, and have come to heal from it with courage.
Amazing composition and I love your response as well.
My favourite too but everyone is great I still listen to them especially when we have friends round
Great reaction---thank you!
That’s sweet how you sing along. So glad you found them!
Love your reaction - about the same emotions I have to this song, which is my favourite song of Simon & Garfunkel, which I detected years after all those other songs of Simon & Garfunkel I had loved since my youth ..
Beautiful reaction, Sarah, and oh, so human...!
Basically the soundtrack for The Graduate..Great film..
Its a song about death and dead ends. Soldiers and generals don't even know what they are fighting for anymore . A true love romance can't be revived. When I hear it, its feels like I'm driving to a funeral , on a cold, rainy November day in the Northeast.
You might like Paul Simon - Graceland: The African Concert.
The rest of the album is pretty darn good.
One of the most beautiful songs ever! And a song within a song (the generals order their soldiers to kill).
♥
Beautiful reaction.
I love to see what this song does to you!
So glad you got to hear this song. It has been my favorite for years.
Amazing song and performance...and a lovely reaction.
Heavenly
Where your ears take you, your soul will follow.....if you listen.
To get a much deeper appreciation of this song, you have to watch The Graduate!
