- How to Build a Mud House? This is the third episode of our "How to build a Mud House?" series. The first part is preparing the mud bricks followed by laying the foundation.
We used over 1350 bricks to build this house. This mudhouse is a single room with a veranda, toilet and attic room that takes up a total size of 4mx8m (32sqm). Only 10% of the consturction uses concrete with another 10% used by metal for the roof structure. The remaining 80% is mud and rice husk.
Usine mud means that the toxicity levels are non existant when building the walls. Usually when building a house of concrete, builders often have eye irritation and respiratory issues. Here none of that exists. Also when you start to live in a house, concrete houses have toxic residue all over! While mud houses are all organic and safe to live in from day 1.

what's the mortar made out of? What do you do if it rains while you are building the house?
The Mortar is made of the same material as the bricks. Mud and rice husk mix. Also we tey our best to build in the dry season. One of the issues with the mud house is its hard to build in rain. As your bricks wont dry either. If it rains just once its fine. It just can be in the rainy season.
What type of mud do u use in joining the bricks together during the building process?
Hi cares c. The mud used is exactly the same used to build the bricks. And the ration between mud and rice husk is 1:1. You can take a look at our "how to make mud bricks" video to get a better idea.

Cada tres filas de adobe debe llevar cañas de estructura.... 5. No se mesclan materiales como metales o contretos con el adobe.... 6. La tecnica de levantamiento de muros debe mejorar.... 7. La solera superior metalica es un peligro para toda la esstructura.
What is the proportion of mud, rice husk for making bricks?
HI ! The ratio of rice husk to mud is 1:1. which means 1 sack of mud, 1 sack of rice husk

I am from Nepal. What is the solution to protect from mice? I think mice can easily make holes in the walls.
Hi krishna. We have rats here. But i am not sure if the mice will want to make holes, because there will be other points of access for them. Mice usually make holes when they are trying to get to something and there is no way to get to it, like food. But i assure you that the battle with rodents is a never ending one. If you find a way... let us know!

Hi. Radon toxicity usually effects a whole area. Fortunately its not been recorded in this area of thailand. It wud be best to use an expert to do a test for radon in your area.

How to lay foundation of a mud house with less cost
Hi Brajendra. The foundation is the one thing you DONT want to save cost on. You can use less costs for the rest of the house, and even bring down the whole house and rebuild it if needed. But if you use low costs foundation (which might sacrifice strength and safety) then its an issue about longevity. Possibly one way to lower cost is to get old construction material to use in parts of the foundation.

I feel like you didn't answer the question. Because the answer is, you can't. If you're not stabilizing the bricks with at least 10-15% portland cement, rain will erode them.
