- How to Build a Mud House? This is the first episode of our "How to build a Mud House?" series. The first part is preparing the mud bricks. We used over 1350 bricks to build this house. This mudhouse is a single room with a veranda, toilet and attic room that takes up a total size of 4mx8m (32sqm). Only 10% of the consturction uses concrete with another 10% used by metal for the roof structure. The remaining 80% is mud and rice husk.
The usual mixture is 1:1 for mud and rice husk. That means 1 sack of mud, and 1 sack of rice husk. This will ofcourse depend on the kind of mud you have. If your mud is too sandy, then you might have to add clay to it to make it stickier.
Once the mixture is mixed well by people walking all over the mud pit, then we trasnfer it into a ladder frame cast. It's easier to produce a big ladder frame, especially if your casting area is away from your mud pit. Remember, your casting area will need to get full sun. As the mud bricks need to be left there for 5-7 days.
Also as soon as your mud bricks are done, move them into a dry shaded area, as you dont want the rick husk to deteriorate on the inside. This will be key, as house construction will start only once you have enough bricks. So keeping your bricks safe is important. We stored our bricks for over 2 months before they were actually used.
During actual construction, all the bricks will soon be plastered for protection. An easy way to keep mud bricks is to simply cover them with black waterproof terpolin sheet (or any waterproof sheet). You can stack the mud bricks as high as human height, dont worry about the lower bricks cracking.

Great work brother , good information 👍👍
Thanks for sharing 👍
Excellent beautiful mud bricks
Thank you very much! Such an inspiration! ❤️
You are so welcome! :)
Here in our place we mix cut straw, cow dung and mud. Than we make good strong walls with bamboo mesh as inside frame.
Fantastic really appreciate your work. Hopefully I will also make same bricks.
Thanks for the info
Amazing
good job
:) I Am beginning my journey to a home with you now. It may or may not be at all legal but I must make a home shelter. Thanking you and may God continue bless and watch over you.
The Begin of an Interesting Journey

This is amazing! Would it be safe to set up a sauna in a building like this? Thanks so much for sharing! 🙌
Hi dear heart. Well to be honest its all about how you plaster the walls. We were recommended by some of the local mud builders to use cement for the walls of the bathroom to prevent eater erosion. Instead we use "leak proof spray paint". Its available in hardware stores. About the sauna, technically in terms of structural strength it would be fine..and it would be fine as long as you look into
1. Plastering walls and waterproofing them really well. If you really are looking at long term then unfortunately waterproof concrete might be your optons.
2. Ensuring that the steam rising from the hot stones in the sauns can exit the room without getting in contact with more mud walls. So you probably need a duct setup well. I am sure there are experts out there who can give better recommendations, but since saunas and mud houses usally dont go well together, there might be some use of cement.
Thank you for this video, as a poor man i am planning to make such kind of mud brick house 👍👍
Did you build it?
@@constantinos6532 Still on process
@THINGLHANG PA I am bulding a mud house like the ones 1000 yearls ago and I started it from 2019.
@@constantinos6532 Great... I will also started building from this year 2023
@@thinglhangpa386how is the building going?
That's right
Yes, it is true, it's exfoliating
How many bricks you require for a house like that?
Can you use any soil for mud house like from UK can I use the soil from my garden
Hi waheed. A higher clay component in your soil will be needed to create the bricks. So not any soil. You should contact mud builders in your area to be sure. Or try making a few bricks and testing their strength.
Sustainable roofing is a main problem
Hi, I am trying to build a mud house in my native village. What part mud to husk ratio did you use?
Hi , The ratio is 1:1 which is 1 sack of mud to 1 sack of rice husk
Hi, I have a doubt, will plywood stick to the bricks or can we paint the walls or sandpaper them? I actually need a reply quickly because me and some of my friends are building a hangout.
Sorry dint really get you. What do you mean by stick to the plywood? Also.make sure that plywood is well treated for termites if you have them in your area.
♥👏🏻🔥
Couple of questions; So there's no cement in the bricks?
Don't the rice husks in the walls attract insects?
Nope no cement. The rice husk attracts termites if you dont put lime in the foundation.
Hello and good day,
Where can i find large quantities of hay?
Thats a good question. For us we used rice husk.. and it came from the local rice mill. For hay, you can maybe try asking people who have cattle, as they often buy it for their cows during some times of the year. Hope that helps
Thanks
rammed bricks might be easier right?
Rammed bricks are an option. Different style of working though. Our architect was more familiar with this method, as it is commonly used in thailand.
Do you publish any book as a guide to mud house building
Hi sabana. Not yet! But we will have some more episodes coming soon!

What do you do if it rains on the bricks during the period where they are drying?
We have another video on brick storage. Do take a look.
COB GANG!!! HWABAG!!!
May we know the exact measure of the mud brick?
Hi Ahmad, The Dimensions of the mud brick are 40cmx20cmx10cm
What happens if it's rain in between drying the bricks .
Good question. Which is why mud house construction is best undertaken in the dry seasons. If the bricks get a good first 3-4 days of sun isnt too bad. Anything before that would be trouble.
Can you use wood shavings instead of rice. ??
Yes i think its possible. But make sure to protect from termites.
Are they just left to dry out in the sun,or they are cooked in a kiln?
Just left to dry out in the sun, usually for 5-7 days.
What are the dimensions of a mud brick? LxWxH?
Hi Yilma. Dimensions are 40cmx20cmx10cm
Is it danger or safety the mud house when there is earthquake??
Hi we live in a fairly earthquake free zone. But i would say it is the overall design and foundation that really matters when considereing earthquake design. Here are some tips www.bigrentz.com/blog/earthquake-proof-buildings
Hi.. can i know the measurements of the single brick
The dimensions of the mudbrick are 40cmx20cmx10cm
Are they water proof?
Hi. The bricks by themselves are not, but with mud bricks is to use the bricks as the core with plaster and roofing to cover to protect the bricks.
What is the the length and width of the mud brick molder?
Each brick is 40x20x10cm
Our mold has 7 bricks in one
Any types of soil is okay or not?
You usually need soil with higher soil content. So you know the brick will stick together. High sand content is not preffered.
Thanks.
Ho what is the measurement of the brik
Hi the brick size is 40x20x10 cm :)
Soon i will share the odo with you of he classroom for our daycare center
what is the size of the brick. Dimensions length:Width:Height
40cmx20cmx10cm
Warning. Peligro... Solo espero que en esa zona no tiemble... los adobes secados al sol directo crean microfisuras que lo debilitan, por tanto se debe secar bajo sombra y es nesecario agregar fibras cortar y largas para ayudar en al estructura del adobe.
Thankyou for this information. Will surely consider this when constructing next.
. Jai Hind
What is the size of your bricks?
Its 40x20x10cm
@@OurLand Thanks. Is there a particular type of soil we should look for ?
Hi jonathan. U want to aim for mud with slightly high clay content. Too sandy is surely to be avoided. When you use the 1:1 ratio for mud and rice husk... the brick should hold its shape when taking out of the cast.
@@OurLand Thanks a lot
What is the bricks size?
Its 40x20x10 cm

What's the total cost of your beautiful home?
