I have a longer 2nd toe which got too close to the big toe. it is slight lifted, not arched at least yet! I have 15 kg more than my normal thanks to this lovely menopause..... but will need to shift it no matter what
It's frustrating that trying to keep in shape is causing me more problems. It now seems that all my calf stretching on the edge of the stairs and high-intensity high knees exercises (i.e. running on the balls of my feet) may have been what caused my metatarsalgia. I am not overweight and am (or was) in very good shape.
@@Miss2010AmericaI am terribly sorry. I use to dance a lot for so long. I have heard through out my life, beautiful body &face. Now I am 66 years old. Every day I live with pain 😢
Great info. Much more informative than my podiatrist. Are there sports that are off limits besides running? I'm and avid hiker and rock climber. Hard to imaging life without those lifelong pursuits!
"Why this is not working" is an inconvenient truth that a lot of doctors don't want to tell patients, because it cuts into those nice profits of conservative care. Those $60 orthotics the doctor got for free from a partnership deal, that $500 shockwave for a total of 30 minutes work, those steroid shots that are counter productive but they get reimbursed hundreds from insurance, none of them get to the root cause of why this problem becomes chronic, and that's that collagen doesn't heal well. Our bodies have not evolved to heal tendons and ligaments the way we heal bones and muscles, and once they exit the inflammatory stage they lay down disorganized, uncomfortable scar tissue. There is absolutely nothing you can do about this except have surgery, after which you'll be FORCED to stay off your feet, and because of the gigantic increase of blood flow due to the incision itself, you will heal better after surgical intervention. Some people MAY get lucky from conservative care in that they have a pain reduction as the scar tissue remodels over time, but most patients in the comment sections of these videos are months to years out and got 0% improvement despite trying a dozen "conservative care" options at a time. I'm going to try the Tenex procedure next month to hopefully just suction out some of the diseased tissue. I'm done messing around with this.
@@jasonstone5022 It went away on its own and then it came back 9 months later but I think its on its way out again. I think you have about a 3-4 month window for it to go away before surgery is the best choice
@@crispycruiser4654 I went and had a diagnostic injection with just lidocaine. We number just the capsule and pain went away. So did the feeling of walking on a pebble under 2nd toe. After that wore off, in a boot for bit. No pain when walking barefoot but still feel like a smaller pebble. So wearing a met. pad and hoping this finally resolves. Ugh. We don’t believe it is plantar plate. The injection was under ultrasound guidance.
@@crispycruiser4654for most people surgery is a gamble: no guaranty it fixes the issue and always a risk of side effects. So conservative treatment is your best bet, surgery is always last resort.
I have GERD and I tried the 2-week Aleve regimen suggested by another youtuber for metatarsalgia. Well my poop turned black which appears to indicate internal bleeding. Thankfully, my foot pain went away almost instantly with the HOKA shoes and high-arch support inserts (I have high arches). I had a question though. I had a knee injury on the same side as my foot pain so I walk different so I don't aggravate it. Could this be the origin of my Metatarsalgia?
Any idea why I can wear flip flops and experience little to no discomfort from my metatarsalgia? Hoka shoes do help, but I still have ball of foot discomfort.
I hate huka shoes I never had foot problems until I got huka shoes. My left knee hurts so I got huka shoes. Now my right foot has clicking pains behind my big toe and next toe
I finally get some answers for my ball of foot pain.Thank you so much. I usually walk for exercise and I couldn't even do that because it was so painful.
Out of sheer frustration I made my own metatarsal pad with cotton cosmetic pads . I stacked about three on top of each other and taped them with blue painters tape on to my orthotics. I had to try it a few times to make sure I had it in the right spot...bingo felt so much better. I have Hoka's they are amazing. I'm 75 and used to walking at least 5-6 miles four-five days a week. I'm giving my metatarsalgia a month to get better 🤩 meanwhile I'm cycling and doing aqua aerobics.
How are you now? Did using the cotton pads repair the problem? I just started having a metatarsalgia issue with my left foot so I am looking for a way to correct it as fast as I can. I used to be a runner back in the day but in the last 6 years since I had a work accident causing me to have constant lower back pain I have not been able to. I now know that everything will go to pot if one does not stretch and get some form of exercise as one gets older. Movement and staying active is the key to which I have not been so it is understandable why things are breaking down for me. I hear that hot yoga does wonders in the winter.... or moving to a warmer climate. Looking at the doing the latter but have to much anxiety to take that leap of faith. It's tough to move to a new location and start all over again with no friends or family.... I digress.
My left foot has inflammation, under the 2nd and third toes, which lead me to your video. I pulled out some foot braces (stretchy bands with cushion for the arch), padded up with gel heel supports (came in the same foot care kit) and walked around the house. I never realized how much I was walking on the balls of my feet. Ouch! Time to look into getting better insoles and do more stretching! [Edit: thank you so much!]

I'm not sure if I have metatarsalgia but it sure sounds like I do. I work at a warehouse walking and standing for long periods of time. I've never had this pain at the ball of my foot in the past 3 years at work. Only thing that changed was my weight gain so I'm assuming I have metatarsalgia. I've tried different shoes and even metatarsalgia pads but it doesn't help. I'm willing to try anything at this point. The pain is unbearable.
Thank you for this video! I do Irish Dancing, and right now I obviously can't with Metatarsalgia. And I suspect getting back to dancing too hard too fast after a months long hiatus is what caused it. But I want to get back into it so badly! When and how can I get back to "repetitively putting thousands of [jumps] on the foot"? It is vital to me that I can get back to that. Any advice will be super appreciated.
Thx do much. I'm 70 and have just started getting slight swelling in both feet on the Metatarsal area. This intensifies after 3 to 4 hours when I'm on my feet.
Would love some feedback! Ball of foot pain came from playing high-speed tennis. Have had it almost 2 years now. Hoka's help a lot, but can't find an insert that keeps the pressure off the ball of my foot while wearing the Hoka... I think the arch of my foot is bruised at this point from trying so many orthotics. Thanks! p.s. I do have Morton's neuroma.

You rock Doc!! all of these exercises I normally do, work out and squash prep, but due to a broken toe next to the big toe I overcompensate when walking and have been walking on my 5th Metatarsal, thus the situation I am in. Thank you for confirming not to stop exercising and for motivating me to get off the coach! Greetings from cold Chicago!
My ball of foot problem came after dropped foot due to back surgery a few years ago. Since I have lost 30 lbs. walk a lot and have stationary bike. After a few miles walking my foot will “flap” more and most pain is in the ball of my foot. Also if I walk bare foot on wood floors at home , from middle of the ball of my foot I get a click, sounds like a knuckle crack. When my foot is rested I can walk normally. After rigorous workout (for me) the foot does work well for about 30 minutes and gets back to normal. Not having much luck with a diagnosis from MD’s. This was video was very good and had more reasonable eplainations than I have had.
Thanks Doc for this video. I suffer Metatarsalgia in both feet, will try the stretching and message techniques. I feel tightness in my arch. For your viewers I just got some OOFOS shoes they are the best so far. Better than Hoka sneakers. They take all the pressure off the Ball of the foot with a big cushion in your arch. Very comfortable.
Doc,thank you I started feeling this pain about 2 weeks ago. I've been searching for videos to help. I was 1 day from making a doctor's appointment! What's crazy I'm from. Michigan, but stay in a southern state now.... Thanks
I really enjoyed and valued this episode on Metatarsalgia Exercises, Massage and Stretches! I have been hungry for this knowledge for years now. I have not had insurance or budget to see a foot doctor and years have gone bye bye 👋. The doctors I could afford offered solutions that were ineffective. I get so tired of being poor and looked at like you have 15 minutes and then we have our next patient. Not your problem I know. The whole system fell apart and this is where “we (me) (I) am”. So thank you for a detailed but easily understood action oriented video. I found I didn’t get bored and learned so much that made a lot of sense because it connected other symptoms that go together like the tightness of the body, stretching, inserts, proper shoes, getting pressure off the area which has been hard to figure out, and the exercises make sense. I can do so much of these things. The cross country fitness makes sense too. I have a girlfriend who insists on walking. I’m in pain after several hours. I do have a question 🙋♀️ how do you stabilize your ankles? I have always been clumsy with my ankles. They will roll, or I am wearing a shoe that has too much cushion in the front and bend it backwards and trip on my hands and knees. It really hurts. I will fall down stairs sometimes and hurt my ankle because I didn’t catch good footing. It makes me feel like something is wrong with me. Like I can’t guage things clearly. It’s been this way as I was young too. For example not lifting a foot high enough over a pet gate and falling down on concrete. Any ideas 💡 Thank you so much! 😊
Can you recommend a good flip flop? I live on a sailboat and have increasing pain on the ball of my foot. I think it is Morton's neuroma or something with my toe. My 3rd toe is separating from my second toe. I bought something to try and align them and I am trying the stretching you recommend. It feels like I have a pebble in the ball of my foot when walking. My feet are constantly wet so I can't just tape a metatarsal pad into my flip flops. I do have them in my tennis shoes. I recently started wearing Oofos flip flops and they seem to have made it worse. These are supposed to be orthotic flip flops. Thank you.
Wow, we appreciate the kind words and your watching Michelle! The oofos can be really good, I would recommend gradually easing into these over time 2-3 weeks. Would metatarsal pads or metatarsal padded orthotics be useful or a hindrance for running, especially as a forefoot/midfoot runner? Or would the padded ones be more used as a walking/recovery shoe? I'm wondering if that hump would feel awkward or even cause blisters during a run. Thanks, Doc!
I would like to know the answer to this question as well. I'm about to attempt my first marathon, and at the 11th hour of training, I'm having pain that I haven't figured out yet.
I have this right now. i cut a yoga matt to the width of of my foot arch. At the bottom i cut a curve to sit round my heel at the top i cut an arch to sit just behind the ball of my foot. yesterday i could barely walk from the pain and had to walk keeping one foot flat today i put the foam in a thin set of socks and wore a pair of boots. the boot on the painful foot was very undone on the laces and only tied up at the top i did a hour patrol at 8pm and was walking normally, the bump is not super pleasant but the lack of pain is amazing
I have lumbar arthritis, sciatica , and now plantar fasciitis and metatarsal on the left foot and swelling on top. I have the foot problem since November of 2020. What should be the better thing to do for my foot.
On stretching: What do you think about doing yoga with trainers on? I know you're supposed to do it barefoot, but doesn't that really aggravate foot pain? Can yoga ultimately improve foot pain such as plantar faciitis or metatarsalgia since it involves stretching?
Thank you! Such a huge source of easy to understand and act upon information. This helped me so very much, especially since many medical sites on this topic tend to be very wishy washy.

I’m sure you hear about foot pain from nurses. I work 12 hours a day. I feel like there’s something stuck on the balls of my feet, like a bandage or something. As much as we would love to for something as complex as post-op care it is 100% critical to discuss these things with your doctor. Foot procedures can take a while to heal and it is very common and expected for people to think that it is taking too long to heal. Stiffness and soreness can be present for up to a year for sure. Work with your doctor!
Very helpful video. But I have one concern that I wonder about. If so much of this pain is caused by tendons and ligaments being contracted by tight calf muscles, and the patient uses Orthotics effectively, will the patient then become dependent on Orthotics and not be able to use other shoes? Would this make metatarsalgia permanent?
Wow, we appreciate the kind words and your watching Brian. ua-cam.com/video/ZI0sANYDF6M/v-deo.html I generally recommend a strengthening routine like this while at the same time letting your metatarsal region heals. QUESTION ⁉️ WHAT ABOUT USING A MINI TRAMPOLINE OR FULL SIZE TRAMPOLINE as form of exercise?? I know it's FANTASTIC for Lymphatic movement and reducing swelling of the foot, ankle and entire Lymph flow and drainage from the body!
Love your channel but I have to completely disagree with your shoe recommendation. A minimal shoe will enable your feet to use and build the muscles and tendons.
Absolutely love minimal shoes, but I. These cases metatarsalgia, neuroma pain & more is related to imbalance & stiffness. A support offloading insole can let the sore areas heal, while muscle strengthening, massage & stretching rehabs the sore areas.
An example would be a broken foot an broken ankle, it must be protected until healthy enough for rehab, it is not beneficial to start strengthening immediately
I'm not sure how much stretching I can do. The pain started recently and it's the same side that I use a cane. I have to wear slip on shoes and slippers.
I probably have this. I got pain last night that went from a dull ache about a 1/10 on the pain scale and within an hour became extreme and is now a 8/10 with any weight or pressure. Putting on socks is very painful. It’s like tender with a stinging, sharp, stabbing pain. Like someone jabbed a needed straight through the bottom of my foot around that crease. It’s either the 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd metatarsal. It’s been a day now and I wore a walking boot for part of the day (did nothing) tried a metatarsal pad and the pain got WORSE. I cannot walk bc the pain is so excruciating and I have a bunch of stuff coming up. I need to be able to walk, at least partially. All I did yesterday was my normal workout and a 20 minute walk on my road. I don’t know what to do, but I can hardly touch it and I don’t want this to be a chronic thing that never goes away but I feel like it is going to end up like that. So many people seem to never improve based off the comments of all these ball of foot pain videos. It seems surgery only improves it for some people and same with injections. I had plantar fasciitis last year at this exact same time, that time the pain was in my heel and was that same tender sharp stinging that even hurt to put socks on. It took me at least 3 months to be able to walk on both feet. Why so I feel like there is nothing that can be done? I hope everyone in the comments feels better, bc I would rather amputate my foot then deal with this pain at this level chronically

had been working at a desk of the past 12 years. stated working at Amazon and started putting in 17-20 miles a night 3 nights a week. After 3 months of that the ball of both feet started to hurt and 2 toes on each foot went numb .
I get more pain on the top and the foot doctors gives me no real help...icing. My ankles are so sore, too! Mininalist shoes? NO WAY...for me, at least! Athritis, bunions surgery, etc. I feel hopeless....I was fine until I tried to WALK up a hill...downhill since then! I actually bought Rockport men's walking shoes...they are great....but right now, I just have so much pain after the walking ... I have a bike on a stand, properly fitted....and OUCH...the ankles! Have never found a podiatrist who even tries to really get to it...

Thank you so much for this video! I have metatarsal pain for several years. I saw a foot doctor before. He told me to add a pad on my insole and stretch my calf, but he didn’t explain it. I also had plantar fasciitis at the time and I thought the stretching was just for PF. Now knowing the mechanics behind it I will focus on stretching and massaging more!
I’ll tell you what I have…pain in my foot just below the 2 little toes. I call it the little ball on the outside of my foot. My family Dr says it’s arthritis because I’m 71 yrs old. I asked her to feel around, because a few years ago, I had a ganglion cyst removed from the outside edge of that foot. I know I need to see my podiatrist, but he’s in S. Bend, Indiana. 40 minutes away. I live in Stevensville MI. When I put my shoes on,(Hoka’s) I have to walk on the inside of that foot until the left side settles down into the shoe, then I’m better. Do you have a video for pain around the little, outside ball of the foot? It feel like, if I grabbed the outside of my foot, by the little toes, and rolled the foot inward, if it would pop, crack, release, it would feel better. But it never cracks. How did this come about? I’m sure my breaking boards with that foot, 30 years ago while learning TaeKwondo had something to do with it. I’ve got to find out where you are in Michigan! Thank you!
What do you think of a half a rocker when you have metal tarsal problems with the ball of your foot? I have hurt my foot many times. We’re in the shoes and they’re wide and they’re men’s shoes and the orthotic is so thick and bulky. It drives me nuts, what do you suggest I have hammer toes on the left foot
My favorite tip is to use a frozen water bottle. I have diabetes so my skin is extra sensitive to cold so I have a hard time bringing myself to putting an ice pack on my feet. Thank you. I had an issue with my achilles tendon in 2012 so I think that my metarsalgia is a side affect of of my side affect. I also have hypothyroidism and it tightens and the achilles
We really hope that you feel better and thanks for watching our video! We're sorry to hear about your problem and we really hope you feel better soon! Just remember to see your podiatrist in person if you are not feeling better in the future! Thanks for being a fan!
I notice a metatarsal issue last month. I thought maybe a dropped metatarsal and tried to crack it back into place. No pass. Used the ball padding and noticed maybe the shoes was a bit to tighten up at the bottom of the tongue. Loosen them up and gave more space and extra bending. I just hope my metatarsal injury is just a sprang. And will heal in a short time. My fault in tying down the shoes to tight when working outdoors.
Thank you for share. I have a podiatrist appointment tomorrow for the pain and knot I feel in the ball of my foot. I felt the pain while power walking to lose weight. I can see a lump on the ball and I feel sharp pain through the front of my front. Prior to exercise I stressed but now it hurts alot

Any results?
I am so happy I found this. So easy to understand and I feel like you covered everything!!! Even the best shoe! Thank you so much!
I usually walk for exercise and I couldn't even do that because it was so painful.
how are you feeling now? i’m
currently in the same spot.
@519Trishers I ask this same question to u..
Thank you, doc, this is very helpful. You have a very nice way of presenting the information.
Glad it was helpful!
I digress.
Should I remove the shoe Liner before adding the orthotic? I have tried it both ways. What would you suggest? Thanks

I cut a circle out the bottom of the pads so it takes the pressure off the pain spot. It helped. And stretching my feet
Jumping rope a lot ,my middle toes kinda feel like nerves or little shocks, I want to go back to exercising, how long do I have to get back to normal
Cortisone injections might help but you’ll have to be careful or to overdo it
Try the insoles he recommends or I wear thick sorbo insoles in my shoes which help.
Thx do much. I'm 70 and have just started getting slight swelling in both feet on the Metatarsal area. This intensifies after 3 to 4 hours when I'm on my feet.
I have never, in all my life, been able to touch my toes with straight legs. 😂
Thick soled shoes that roll are great while you have pain but not for regular or long term use because you’re making your foot muscles weaker.
Thank you so much, God bless you!

All those clunky "stabilizing" shoes weaken your foot muscles. Your foot is flexible for a reason.
I see I need to massage and stretch more
I don’t have insurance I have UA-cam thanks
Thanks Doc for this video. I suffer Metatarsalgia in both feet, will try the stretching and message techniques. I feel tightness in my arch. For your viewers I just got some OOFOS shoes they are the best so far. Better than Hoka sneakers. They take all the pressure off the Ball of the foot with a big cushion in your arch. Very comfortable.
@Mike, oh wow!! My Hoka (Bondi-ultra plush) are like walking on clouds and give me a spring in my step. I’ll have to try OOFOS too! 🙌🏻 Thanks!
Thank U ! I use Hoka. But I will try OOFOS
I wear OOFOS at home and they help with my metatarsalgia!

Any ideas 💡
Thank you so much!
They should gradually feel better and support you more.

What model Hoka do you recommend. I know different models have different size heel drops

@@kylergeston no, because I just realized that my foot issue is due to tight calf muscles, and fascia all the way up to my hip/lower back. The products helped, but only stretching and strengthening is going to improve the issue. Positive is that the issue never got worse and my bunion isn't worse.

Have a great 2021 and feel better soon!
Thanks for advice me, thanks a lot.
very informative and nicely explained
Very helpful video. But I have one concern that I wonder about. If so much of this pain is caused by tendons and ligaments being contracted by tight calf muscles, and the patient uses Orthotics effectively, will the patient then become dependent on Orthotics and not be able to use other shoes? Would this make metatarsalgia permanent?
Wow, we appreciate the kind words and your watching Brian.
ua-cam.com/video/ZI0sANYDF6M/v-deo.html I generally recommend a strengthening routine like this while at the same time letting your metatarsal region heals. This can be an injury that needs time to heal, and then the focus can be placed on strengthening after that is healed.

Could this cause 2 nd toe to feel broken
Any support you get with any of the store they do not work sorry but true and new balance shoes do not help either.
Hi Valerie, A good shoe combined with the proper offloading insole may be the key!
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍🇩🇪🇮🇶
I'm not sure how much stretching I can do. The pain started recently and it's the same side that I use a cane. I have to wear slip on shoes and slippers.
Consider this video, this might help: ua-cam.com/video/I7qud-27BYI/v-deo.html
I don't have pain, but pressure on balls of both foot after mile 1 of walking, so I guess this is what I have.🤷♂️

I feel like something is just off? Maybe i should come see you!
had been working at a desk of the past 12 years. stated working at Amazon and started putting in 17-20 miles a night 3 nights a week. After 3 months of that the ball of both feet started to hurt and 2 toes on each foot went numb .
17-20 miles a night is insane but that level of worker exploitation explains why Bezos is loaded
I am 5'9, 140 lbs. I have tried insoles, expensive shoes, but nothing can compete with hustling around on concrete 8+ hours a day. Not even my top of the line foot messager.
Even if you’re in pain from the metal tarsal paining the ball of your foot you’re supposed to exercise. How do you do that when you’re in severe pain

You kinda remind me of Ronald Jenkees. Great keyboard player. Either way like the video. I’ve been having this kind of pain over the past few months.
Very good video. I walked through miles which probably is giving me issues and I do yoga and sometimes yoga gives me problems too.
thank you dear sir it help a lot.
How are you now?
Did he say do not use heat pad for the pain?
He said that using a cold pad or ice is preferable to heat
Thank you for share. I have a podiatrist appointment tomorrow for the pain and knot I feel in the ball of my foot. I felt the pain while power walking to lose weight. I can see a lump on the ball and I feel sharp pain through the front of my front. Prior to exercise I stressed but now it hurts alot

Thank you for being such a great fan, and we appreciate you watching!
I got either metatarsalgia or plantar fasciatis (it must be metatarsalgia because it is in the arc area). I'm doing cycling in a stationary bike but every time I do it the next day I'm worse :(
