- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is paying a surprise trip to China, following visits to Ukraine and Russia. He says he's on a Ukraine peace mission, after his country took over the rotating presidency of the European Union. But EU officials insist Mr Orban has no mandate to speak for the bloc. He's says he's heading for Washington next.
For more on this, we talk to Alicja Bachulska. She is a policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations and expert on Chinese foreign policy and China-EU relations. She joins us from Warsaw.

No hijacking is actually taking place cause Orban, as far as I'm aware, isn't claiming he's doing it in an official capacity of EU presidency.

Looks very much like he's doing these visits in his capacity as a president of Hungary.

In one interview several years ago, one journalist asked Orban about something which is happening in Germany and made him to comment on that in regard what is the stance of Hungary toward the same. He replied - that can never happen in Hungary, we are serious country...

Commentator is unbelievably shallow and ill-informed. Orban's visit to Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing and then Washington is clearly a diplomatic peace mission, most likely with a lot of groundwork already laid ahead, rather than just a random act of self-promotion as suggested by the commentator. Hungary, although a relatively small country, can play a significant role precisely because it can and does act independently from the bloc politics of the day.
And how can a leader of a European democracy be inbdependent of both blocks? The answer being of course that he is the tin-pot leader of a compromised semi-democracy.
