my editor made a mistake I was talking about the laika movie wildwood not the night gardener
Notice me!!
Bird
What happen to you other characters like Peta jones
Would you like to do a review of Zack Snyder's Legends of Owl Kingdom Ga Hoole. Animation is splendit and plot is good too. But it is quite a dark film
Another person who did the "dont translate" thing is genndy tartakovsky in his show Primal. It has very little dialogue except for one episode thats SUPPOSED to be an outlier, and relies heavily on show don't tell. We dont know what most of the languages spoken even are, but you dont need to
I love Wes Anderson’s ‘kid’ movies, because even though they’re marked to kids, he treats his audience… like they’re smart. Watching this as a kid, I felt smart. I didn’t feel talked down to.
all kids movies should be like that .
I wouldn’t really call Isle of Dogs a kids movie tho… especially considering its PG-13 rating
@@directorforplastic7929 I know. I was more referring to the genre and marketing
@@directorforplastic7929 the MPAA is on crack man the PG-13 dosen't mean shit nowadays.
You'd have to be like three years old to have watched this "as a kid" I'm very confused. Either you ARE a kid, or aged extremely fast
Along with the non-translation being good for obvious reasons, it forces you to be in the perspective of the dogs. Having the dogs speak the language of the consumer makes you relate more to the dogs by not being able to understand people. Very good writing
@@Volonanostress that’s fair, I guess the only way the artistic vision works is with the same regional audience as the director lol
The Stop-Motion Wes Anderson movies are both phenomenal.
I hope he does another one someday!
Also, Isle of Dogs needs a Criterion Collection Blu-ray/4K release! Pretty much every single one of his films has a Criterion release.
I GOT THE FABLED 1 THOUSANDTH LIKE, PRAISE UPON ME (sorry for being off-topic)
I loved the banter and dry humor between the dogs.
Wes Anderson should do animation more often.
I'd like to see him tackle all mediums. Hand Drawn, CG, Digital 2D, Hybrid, Stop-Motion, everything.
Well, the french dispatch had a 2d animated sequence
As a lover of dogs and Wes Anderson films I absolutely love this movie. Wes Anderson is such a great director.
as a lover of hedgehogs and guns i absolutely love Shadow the Hedgehog. Sega is such a great company
@@spimbles as a lover of blocks and platforming, i absolutely love minecraft (and terraria) relogic and mojang are such great companies
@@spimbles Omg same
Fun Fact: Wes Anderson went to the same school as my dad. They also sat next to each other in the same class together aswell.
Edit: I know it sounds silly and radiates the same energy as “My dad works for Microsoft.” but it’s true.
Source? It appeared to me in a dream
@@crocodilewithsocks1834 No, I’m dead serious.
@@rickyrackey7930 gonna take your word as anyone with a Pepe the frog profile picture only speaks the truth
@@RedLaundryBasket I know it sounds silly. But it’s true.
@@rickyrackey7930 im sure it is im just making a joke
Stranger Things did the foreign language pretty good too, having Murray translate Alexei, or having subtitles for after Hopper learns Russian because now he understands it better - it’s subtitled because Hopper understands it and now the audience can along with him.
It doesn’t do this all the time but it does it pretty well!
Show still shit tho
I’ve been a cat person my whole life, and I’ve never really been a fan of dogs, but I still absolutely adore and love this movie. So the fact it managed to touch not only dog people, but cat people too, shows how masterful the subject matter is presented. I’ve only watched the movie twice, but this video makes we really want to go for a third time
I watched the sushi scene. You made me seek it out. Safe to say I'm satisfied beyond my understanding.
Edit: DUDE THAT SUSHI SCENE ALONE TOOK 8 MOTHS TO MAKE BRO. 8 MONTHS. I AM FLABBERGASTED.
man I love stop motion too, it takes so much freaking patience just to get a few minutes worth of film, and still it always manages to look so flawless. Even when you do not like the movie you can still appreciate the delicate art that is stop motion.
In another life I would have definitely tried becoming a stop motion artist.
Well why not this one?
I remember in a BTS clip the people who worked on coralline said something along the lines of how it took a whole week to create about 3 seconds for the movie
@@arvo-noon it’s not mean for everyone, you can still enjoy it without doing it yourself. Stop motion is very time consuming work that requires a lot of patience which not everyone can handle
This is unironicaly my second favourite animated film of all time
Iron giant is first
Great choices
Yes I really enjoyed this movie
I absolutely love Wes Anderson movies. They have such a unique aesthetic! Never got round to watching this movie but ive just put it on my list
Did you watch it yet
Sadly it lost its Oscar to Spider-Man into the spider verse, which by no means, is a bad movie, but this movie, in my opinion, stands out in a lot more ways.
at least it didn’t lose to a disney movie
@@whatthehellisthis dude true! And spider verse truly is an amazing film, so the Oscar didn’t go to waste.
@@diekamel1011 And to be fair, while I really like the attention to detail of Isle of Dogs, and respect it, I still prefer Spider-Verse over it, it has more fleshed-out characters.
@@mackielunkey2205 Fair point, but in the end it just comes down to preference. I enjoy the mystic style of Wes Anderson just a tad more, and I still see Spiderverse as one of the greates animated movies ever made.
@@diekamel1011 I honestly didn’t see the speech at the climax as Atari pointing out to his uncle that it would be hypocritical to kill the stray dogs (since Atari was brought in as a stray himself) before this video. That was a really neat touch.
In 2019 i walked into my brother watching this movie and i sat down and watched with him at first i thought this move was weird but an hour into the movie i grew to love it. And i still enjoy the dogs surrounding the bag of meat meme
YES. YES IT IS. THANK GOD FINALLY SOMEONE HAS MADE A VIDEO ABOUT THIS AMAZING MOVIE.
I’m so glad you’re talking about this because Isle of Dogs is chronically overlooked, it’s absolutely stunning and did not get the recognition it deserved
I haven't watched this movie but think I might just because of the untranslated Japanese alone. When Steven Spielberg left all the Spanish untranslated in his rendition of West Side Story I felt oddly seen in a way I never expected in a movie, it made me feel included and it's not something movies do often let alone pull off. I'm suddenly so fascinated in seeing what it's like from the other side, to be in the party where the language being spoken isn't one of my own and to see how that feeling is utilized in the film. Because obviously if the director wants us to feel that way it's for a reason and I want to know why.
I saw this in theater with my mother! We always argue about whether or not it's a good movie, so I'm glad to have some more fuel on my side B))
I watched this aswell as many other movies like this “not for kids” when I was a kid and wasn’t scared. I feel like they really shaped me as a person very grateful
isle of dogs is one of my favourite movies of all time, every time you watch you notice something different and beautiful in either the writing or animation
I saw this movie on a plane and absolutely LOVED it
I watched this movie soon after i lost my last dog Baby and it has a really special place in my heart ❤
Sorry for your loss ❤️
It was surprisingly an amazing movie and it's great that stop motion isn't dead and can still be great to watch
When it comes to the whole “dogs are speaking English?” I think what’s important isn’t what language they’re speaking. It might sound like English to us as the audience, but really, theyre just speaking dog. They don’t understand the Little Pilot, not because he speaks Japanese and they speak English, but rather, he speaks human and they dont. Even if the dogs spoke Italian or Spanish or some other language, its mostly just important that theyre not speaking the same language as the main humans.
Finally somebody is talking about isle of dogs, This is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Steve reviews also did a video about Isle of Dogs
One of my favorite movies as a kid was Fantastic Mr Fox, I would watch it constantly to the point where my parents knew all about the movie. So when Isle of Dogs finally came to our theaters, me and my dad went to see it… we saw it in theaters about 5 times (bringing my brother along a few times). It quickly became a favorite and I adore everything about it. The soundtrack is amazing, the visuals are gorgeous, the story is interesting, it’s just all perfect to me.
I am so hyped for the New Laika movie. I thought they were never gonna make a new movie.
Ah yes, the other fantastic stop motion by Wes Anderson. This is actually the movie that made me watch his other movies since this was the second movie of his i had watched. This had just solified my opinion on Wes' style being overall very magnetifying.
I love when at first there's no Shadow and then it cuts and Shadow is suddenly there, because you know there is a ruined take that got edited out where he was just whistling nonstop until he was allowed out of the cage
I saw this in theaters when it came out & it cemented my love & respect for animation & how technically impressive it is to make a movie like this, led alone one this good.
I remember the first time I watched this thinking that the lack of subtitles was going to be annoying and that I wouldn’t understand anything therefore not enjoy the movie, but here I am a year later with this being one of my favorite movies and I never get tired of it
11:49 I love How Atari got introduced in an Night vision camera. Which was animated to look like a green videogame screen😂
This movie won my heart thanks to the sushi making scene, I mean look at it! It's beautiful!
(PS: If you enjoy movies that maintain the original language of the characters, I think you may enjoy Pan's Labyrinth.
Of course, the whole thing is subtitled but still, I really like that movie and it seems right up your alley! Cheers and good day!)
This movie is absolutely phenomenal I’m so glad you liked it 😭
I’m not even a dog person but this movie is fantastic
I saw this movie when it first came out and I was a little younger so a lot of stuff went over my head, in part bc of the language barrier of the humans, but I watched it again earlier this year and there's so much attention to detail and intentionality to this movie. It's beautiful, dare i say a masterpiece
BuT iT’S RaCiSt aNd OrIeNtAlIsT
Cried my eyes out with this movie 😭
If u love stop motion, i recommend Mad God its a stop motion movie that was years in production.
Mad God was a hell of a film, I'd love to see Pig talk about it.
Just a simple explanation, the style of using every single prop and thing existing on your set is called Chekhov's Gun who used a random gun as an example of how that insignificant random prop should have a lore/plot reason for existing! Also, I watched this masterpiece a couple of days ago!!! It was an absolute 10 outta 10!
no, chekov’s gun is the simple concept of introducing a thing in act 1 and that thing being important during act 3
ex. character shows they have a gun hidden in their coat in act 1, later in act 3 they shoot the antagonist with aforementioned gun
This movie is seriously so good! My only complaint is that cats are on the villain side. But that’s just me being a butt hurt cat person. Atleast in this movie it’s just a family of people who hate dogs. But for real even though he just explained the movie. The way the story goes and how well made the movie is. You can still go and watch and be surprised and entertained while knowing what happens.
Yay! I remember suggesting this movie a while back too! I am so glad you did a video on it. It's one of the best stop motion movies ever made!
A movie that handles different languages the same way as Isle of Dogs came in to my mind: Azur and Asmar. The movie uses two different languages, the main one and the secondary one. The difference is that secondary one is very rarely translated, which is good since characters are in foreign country and don't understand the language that well.
I don't know anyone who has reviewed it, it's pretty unknown film. To me it's a very unique though, at least what comes to the usual animated movies we watch (Disney, Pixar etc.). Visuals are gorgeous, and animation is very unique. Never seen a similarly animated film. I highly recommend!
i also think the soundtrack deserves a shoutout its literally perfect
YESSSS SAW THIS LAST YEAR AND couldn’t believe how great it was, think about it every day now
I remember going to the theater to watch this with my ex and her brother and we all loved it.
Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal
2019 ‧ Animation ‧ does a fantastic job of portraying non verbal language and when characters do speak it's not English.
Honestly, one of my favorite movies. I love everything about it. It’s just so good.
I remember watching this with my parents and they were shocked when the dog cussed ☠️
I honestly just love Wes Anderson films. The Darjeeling Limited being my favorite but Isle Of Dogs really is a gorgeous stop motion film.
Shadow out from your shoulder aroudn 24 minutes lines up with some random thump, announcing his presence
Since I was a small 12-year-old kid, this movie was and continues to be my favorite movie. It's a work of art.
“Beheaded the head of the head of the clan” a tongue-twister
i’ve always loved wes anderson’s stuff. everything he’s done is just SO good
Me and my dad love this movie I honestly thought people forgot about it makes me so happy that people remember it
This movie's been on my to watch list for ages and this video made me pause before you really got into it and watched it then returned to your video. So thank you for helping me tick that of my list
The sushi scene is beyond satisfying for me just beautiful to look at
Isle of Dogs is my absolute favorite movie. I love the stop motion and the art style is just immaculate. Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs are amazing. Wes Anderson is one of my directors if all time. The story is perfect and I love it so much!
Bionic Pig is turning into a pirate with birb on his shoulder
I love this movie, thank you for covering it.
This has been my favorite movie, since I saw it in theaters. I could go on for hours about every detail from every second
I've never met a single person who's seen the movie, let alone like it.
I appreciate this so much
I won't say I loved this movie but I did end up going to the theaters to see it during its final few showings.
I was seemed liked a dream sitting in the theater all alone watching this movie pan out.
The visuals truly were amazing to experience on the big screen and the story was nothing like what I expected.
I wish I could re live the moment again
"im a dog person" brings out a bird
Just a month or two ago this movie came up in my mind somehow, and thought I was crazy because I totally forgot the name and couldn't find it anywhere.
I love how the beginning basically told you how'd it end.
Watched this for the first time last night. Loved every second!
I got this movie on DVD and I probably watched over 100 time(being completely serious) being and artists also is a big part of it because I love the stop motion and the style of everything. Great video btw. Keep of the work I'm an new subscriber thx for the amazing vid
So glad you did a video on this movie, it's one of my top 5 favorites
I'm glad you took our recommendations, it truly is a masterpiece of animation.
Wish we could get back to these types of kids movies that dont shy away from things but instead takes difficult situations an emotions an make them fit a kids story. Think the problem is that theres plenty of tales but not enough fables
Honestly, this movie was so confusing and felt like a fever dream that wasn’t really going anywhere throughout the whole movie until the very end, but I loved how confusing it was.
I watched this as a kid and was a bit confused by everyone saying it wasn't a kids' movie until one of my friends described it as "Wes Anderson does Plague Dogs"
It is my favourite film!! Thanks for covering it :)
This movie is truly stunning and everything from the pacing, animation techniques, music, character development, ITS SO AMAZING!!!
THANK YOU IVE BEEN WAITING for something like this
I just rewatched this on a whim, for the first time since in Theaters, about a week ago.
it held up so, so well.
This video was perfectly timed.
I love this so much omg I just watched the whole thing and omfg it is soooo good I love the line “I bite” it says so much for chief
I love how your bird is just chillin their
when this movie came out, I thought it was so clever for the title doubling as both "isle of dogs" and "I love dogs"
God dammit, bp said that in the video lmao
Nah I saw this movie before. It's a *mwah* masterpiece
Wow thanks for the video I’m definitely going to have to see this movie sometime
I still remember the day where my social studies class watch this and people were not surprise about the twist
I LOVED THIS MOVIE SO MUCHH THANK YOU
I fucking LOVE ISLE OF DOGS. Wes Andersen is one of my favorite directors
Watching this video again after finally watching the movie is such a treat
I fully agree with everything you said in the video, but we appreciate the birb?? Like the lil guy was just THERE and it was immaculate
I'VE GENUINELY GOT SO HAPPY YOU MADE A VIDEO ON THIS MOVIE!!
I remember watching this as a child and being confused
I have the movie poster framed in my room. I loved this movie, I saw it in the theater when it came out. This movie is one of my favorite animated films. It's brilliant.
I remember watching this in a really nice theater that I was watching in for the 1st time since it was out of the area and just being _blown_ away by the visuals of this movie alone. Of course I love everything else about the movie too.
IVE BEEN WAITIN FOR THIS ONE
Thank you for going over this movie!! It’s my favorite movie so I clicked this video immediately :D
I love your bird they seem so happy to sit on your shoulder and listen :)
I love your reaction/analysis of these films. I'm an animation student at academy of art and I have all the same reactions as you do. So I appreciate you putting it out there xD
I loooove this movie and your commentary on it. 😄 I’m going to rewatch it again right now. My coworker was put off by the style but I couldn’t sum up how amazing it was at the time. I’m going to send them this vid so maybe they’ll change their mind! 🤩
I agree SOOoOO much its crazy. To the point where I was actually about to make a video about this movie. This movie is by far my favorite of all time it is a heart wrenching masterpiece and whenever someone asks for a movie reccomendation I say this movie. As a person who only knows only a little Japanese I am immersed even more. I fucking love this movie and every person on the planet should watch it.
This is one of my favourite movies
Stop motion will always have a special place in my heart.
Just realized that the title itself, when said fast, sounds like someone saying "I Love Dogs". That's fucking genius.
