The sneeze isn't just for comedic affect. It's something dogs actually do. They sneeze, or "snuff" as it's often called, to break tension and tell other dogs "hey, I'm just playing," or "hey, this situation is kinda tense and it doesn't have to be." I have no reason to point this out. I just kind of thought that was neat and wanted to share.
I really like how the language barrier is purposefully used in this film. The entire film is mostly told through the dogs perspectives, who obviously can't understand human speech. We as the audience don't get subtitles because the dogs don't get them either. I also find it interesting that the foriegn exchange student, who is constantly championing the dogs cause, speaks english almost exclusively despite knowing Japanese. She is literally speaking the dogs language.
I feel like the animal can talk the same way with human it just they can't understand the language unlike in Mr. Fantastic Fox they can understand each other cause they all speak English
The reason the 4 dogs kinda give themselves to Atari is b/c they were all originally 'house dogs' & in the beginning of the film they talked about how they wanted to just quit, they were pets, they're not used to being dirty, eating garbage, & fighting other dogs on a daily basis. Plus, they all speak highly of the 'masters' & would want nothing more than to return to their original comfy life style. So, to me, it makes sense why they all become so obedient when Atari 'takes control' of the pack.

Atari couldn't understand the dogs, except for Spots or Chief when they're wearing the headset. When the dog was yelling for him to land, it's assumed that he's being barked at. Seeing how calm the dogs were the whole time, you'd assume something went wrong if they're chasing him barking.

12:29 I think they're trying to pass it off as him fumbling his words and letting out that phrase on accident. All that pressure from the crowd would do that. But they handled it pretty badly, theres no former scene telling you Atari's nervous.
I saw this on Disney+ and it's an instant classic because of the animation, the performances and the shocking elements of dogs in a remote island. Wes Anderson is a creative genius. I love that film. People should appreciating this wonderful workmanship even so many animators making it worked. GREAT VID!
Agreed, The film is too childish to me. I mean it obviously cashing on adults who grew up with the series , why not make a somewhat "more" adult-oriented show?
Age Restrictions this is the first time I seen this movie and when I watched it I was like what am I watching then I realize it’s a really really good movie that you don’t need to know what’s going on
I was so excited for this film as Fantastic Mr Fox was and still is my favorate film, but when I finally watched it the plot, and the characters where nowhere near the level that FMF had. Plus I think the humans in fmf looked so much better than in Isle of Dogs, like Bean genuinely looked like Michael Gambon ( his voice actor). But I still wouldn’t say that Isle of Dogs was a bad film, I just think that compared to FMF, it isn’t as well put together
Fantastic mr fox was made from a pre-existing story. isle of dogs isn't. if you are familiar with japanese folklore, and the story of hachi Isle of dogs makes more sense.
I havent seen it yet (somehow? Cause im forgetful? Fmf is in my top 10 for sure, so me having not seen this yet makes no sense) .. but even though i havent seen it I wana say your wrong & its awesome..and im not going to be disappointed because youre WRONG... lmao. Ahah, sorry im just so excited for this
One thing i didn't get was why the animals had American accent's while all the Humans had British one's also the Animals should've had British accent's as the film is set in England
Azazura Azura while that is true, only the first half of FMF is actually based on the book if you’ve read it, most of that film was entirely original, so
Wes Anderson's style is purposely very theatrical. It takes some getting used to, but I'm absolutely in love with the method. It constantly reminds you this is a movie. He likes showing the strings and zippers behind his special effects. he announces comedically small time jumps like the audience hasn't gotten used to cut to sequence editing yet. The characters look at the camera like they're trying to gauge the audience's reaction. His love stories tend to be more emotional slapstick than anything else. It'll be something like Owen Wilson says "I think I've loved you my whole life", and Gwynith Paltrow says "But I'm married to your brother. Isn't that wrong?" What he sees as weaknesses are its strong points to me. I also think the great thing about the American is that she's very American. We intervene. We stick our nose in everyone's business. Meaning the exchange student comes off as very brave, very heroic, very condescending, and very tone deaf all at the same time. I saw that and I'm like "yep, those are my people" XD.
I really like how well the 2D integration is done in this one The Stop Motion reminds me a lot of ThunderBirds. 7:03 That line art style is called "Line Boil".

I might suggest you take a look at “The Animal Train” I think it’s done by a creator you’ve looked at before. Cute film from my childhood but I recall it having some real dark undertones. You sir are a true movie critic who isn’t like most of the movie critics on UA-cam who intentionally choose a bad movie so that they can make fun of it. I love your channel keep going
It’s so smooth and it makes me amazed each time I watch it because, i always spot new details I never noticed before. They also put so much work and dedication on every single movement and individual hairs. I am truly amazed at what stop motion animators can do!
One scene that will always stick out to me from this film is “my friends think I like to fight, but it’s just not true.. sometimes I’ll loose my temper and blow of a little steam but I’m not a violent dog… I don’t know why I bite-“
I loved this movie. There’s an engaging plot, good dialogue, character development and most of all, impeccable animation. The animation, for me, was the best part of the movie. Edit: I did have some issues with how obnoxious Atari was being to the dogs in the beginning of the movie.
I remember when I first saw this film in theatres, I was confused about the design of the humans. I thought their skin looked like it was made of apples or something.
I absolutely loved this movie. The animation and art style appeals to me so much and I love the way they played on the language barrier, as someone else in the comments said.
I remember watching the trailer for this and was instantly hooked and excited to see it in theatres. This is such an underrated movie and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys animated movies.
1:25 glad there was a visual spelling of megasaki because I was going to be so mad that you just said that Nagasaki (which is where I used to live) wasn't real
One of my favourite films. Just the way it looks, the animation, the story (as basic as it is) and the voice acting. I think setting it in Japan was a huge advantage as it presents some gorgeous sets and environment styles. Also how could we not forget Alexandre Desplat’s impressive score?
Atari doesn’t understand the dogs language wise, but understands the movements. The dog running while on the plane states to him that the dog needs to say something. If you also look at the dogs body language and Atari, you can see he’s responding to the dogs body movements. Even when Chief is telling his story, all the other dogs are huddled around Chief showing and Atari could tell he had something to say. It’s not about languages that makes the dogs and Atari communicate with each other. It’s seeing other movements and understanding the body language. Try watching this movie again with the dog speaking in Spanish or French, a language you don’t know. You’ll start to see Atari respond to the words. And at the end, the communication device Spots and Atari have are hinted to be able to communicate its each other. It’s a part of it.

*F A N T A S T I C*
This sequel is just more upbeat.
Haha!
Looks like they DID find the island!
Looks like they did find an island after all.
@JapaneseGiant Lizard1234 proof?
12:29 I think they're trying to pass it off as him fumbling his words and letting out that phrase on accident. All that pressure from the crowd would do that. But they handled it pretty badly, theres no former scene telling you Atari's nervous.
That's just part of being Japanese, keeping your feelings hidden no matter the consequences.
that hunger game whistle moment made me have a weird sad feeling
A OWL
I actually wanted to see this movie cause I’m a stop motion junkie but I’m glad I got to know the ending
I saw this on Disney+ and it's an instant classic because of the animation, the performances and the shocking elements of dogs in a remote
island. Wes Anderson is a creative genius. I love that film. People should appreciating this wonderful workmanship even so many animators making it worked. GREAT VID!
Fun fact, I watched this in theatres. During the volcano scene i nearly shat myself, that booming sound was terrifying
I've said it once, and I'll say it again.
Still waiting for an invader zim: Enter the Florpus review
BreeZee enter the florpus was a meh movie
@@itisamystery4708 it really was the nostalgia was really the only thing keeping me hyped
@@itisamystery4708 I just wanna see Steve's take on the movie. I personally enjoyed it, and would love a review from him!
Agreed, The film is too childish to me. I mean it obviously cashing on adults who grew up with the series , why not make a somewhat "more" adult-oriented show?
2018: let's dump dogs on an island so we wont get a disease!
2020: Dont bother, it's too late, Corona is here!
@Age Restrictions what
Age Restrictions this is the first time I seen this movie and when I watched it I was like what am I watching then I realize it’s a really really good movie that you don’t need to know what’s going on
Corona: It's too late, people!
And let's not forgot that the scientist that first openly spoke about the outbreak (in China) died as well.
*What a coincidence!*
Atari has a few screws loose, cause he has a frecking pipe in his head.
Oliver Sidaway Thank you! That’s exactly my thoughts. Isle of Dogs would actually rank low on the Anderson movies I’ve watched.
Fantastic mr fox was made from a pre-existing story. isle of dogs isn't.
if you are familiar with japanese folklore, and the story of hachi Isle of dogs makes more sense.
I havent seen it yet (somehow? Cause im forgetful? Fmf is in my top 10 for sure, so me having not seen this yet makes no sense) .. but even though i havent seen it
I wana say your wrong & its awesome..and im not going to be disappointed because youre WRONG...
If you say Isle of dogs real fast,it sounds like "I love dogs"
Not my own comment btw! Credit goes to the orginal commenter!
Crediting them isn't much when you haven't actually stated their name...
Nice try tho.
But be original for once.
Take that liberal 😎
That's intentonal
Why would you credit the “original” when you don’t even know the name 😂
I will wrap up this review in one word: “yep”
"The uncle and the corrupt government all get sent to prison" *Japanese prison* O_o that's harsh!
How is it harsh exactly i mean isn't the setting in Japón
Oohhh just hearing the name ‘Duke’ makes me wanna cry.
(I had a Beagle named Duke who was put down in February)
I'm so sorry to hear that. :(
"By firing his explosive military teeth at them" LOL WTF!?
Well, he was a guard dog...
U could watch the movie and find it
I just remember a meme I saw of this like 5 months ago with the dogs fighting over an anime body pillow
Has anybody noticed that Isle of Dogs sounds like I love dogs? 🤔 How Interesting.
Its intentional.
ShadowMan8886 I didn’t get that I’m such a fool
I really like how well the 2D integration is done in this one
The Stop Motion reminds me a lot of ThunderBirds.
7:03 That line art style is called "Line Boil".
Nobody:
UA-cam subtitles at 14:05 : Show Kitchen Minor
Hey Steve, recently found your channel and love your reviews. Well thought out and spoken, and tackle a lot of interesting themes. I might suggest you take a look at “The Animal Train” I think it’s done by a creator you’ve looked at before. Cute film from my childhood but I recall it having some real dark undertones. Anyways great review!
10:03 good old Jeff Goldblum is always a plus.
2:13 that’s been obvious since the first few minecraft mob votes.
My favorite scenes in the movie were
- the sushi scene
- the lab tests scene
- when the activist found the lab assistant (shouting at her)
Something: happens
Characters: looks at the camera like they're on The Office
I love this film and I think my favorite animation sequence is the sushi preparation scene.
Might I recommend the Canadian animated film, Rock and Rule
the film closes and all is good and happy
me: *somethings not right*
I heard of this movie 2017 I wanna say. I forgot about it until I had a trip to japan. I was heading to japan and was looking through the movies, and then I saw Isle of Dogs. A truly wonderful movie in my opinion.
4:49
Let’s hope the group didn’t say “I want to hear it again!” XD
Me: *watches movie when it comes out. Buys it.*
Me in 2019: *watched it a few months ago*
Me now: *sees video and reading title*
Me now: "that title seems to be right :/"
0:15 4 seconds later and everything went to shit._.
I don't know if I should feel ashamed or proud for how you brought that sponsor connecting to the movie in a stupidly genius way.
Well done.
Me: alright, the reviews over. *sees time* of no there's 13 minutes left, something's gonna happen.
Steve: and it's over
Me: *even more confused*
What I like about your channel is that you make honest reviews with actual feedback and you choose movies that can be interesting and/or entertaining. You sir are a true movie critic who isn’t like most of the movie critics on UA-cam who intentionally choose a bad movie so that they can make fun of it. I love your channel keep going
"A owl" AN owl! If the word starts with a vowel, it's "an"!😝
That's part of the joke. You have to have context before you judge. Damn lighten up
@@southernsocialite5061 I guess my teasing didn't translate well through text. Maybe I should add a 😝
An actual happy ending. Haven’t seen that in a long while
It’s so smooth and it makes me amazed each time I watch it because, i always spot new details I never noticed before.
Me at 6:23 : "... but wait , its not"
Steve : "No actually it is, its a happy ending surprisingly"
"wait really ? man, you disapoint me ..."
That happened to me too
I loved this movie.
I love how the animation becomes slow then suddenly become fast
I absolutely loved this movie. The animation and art style appeals to me so much and I love the way they played on the language barrier, as someone else in the comments said.
11:55 Me, when I realized I had a crush on one of my friends.
That mayor was an obvious cat guy, change my mind
Well, that’s literally part of the plot so, I think you misses that part
@@thecoastergnome8603 I never saw it, until yesterday
The pilot (kid) had a bad habit of crying and gnashing his teeth at uncanny times. Very strange film.
Steve upon seeing a film with a happy ending: Impossible. Perhaps the archives are incomplete.
9:40 isn’t that a soundtrack from the Seven Samurai? Where Kikuchiyo holds the flag atop a roof to show the people and village?
Have you ever seen "The Princess and the Goblin?" Loved it as a kid. Kind of... eerie in places, though.
The movie is available on UA-cam. :)
He means megasaki
One of my favourite films. Just the way it looks, the animation, the story (as basic as it is) and the voice acting. I think setting it in Japan was a huge advantage as it presents some gorgeous sets and environment styles. Also how could we not forget Alexandre Desplat’s impressive score?
Isle of dogs predicted COVID-19
How to pronounce Owl: "Au! A-Au!!"
This is my favorite movie of all time its a totally masterpiece,I don't cry over movies but this made me cry
People have talked about this movie already and we all know it’s fantastic
I'm vastly disappointed you didn't mention the scene of Chef calling Spot a "Son of a bitch" XD and the characters were awesome dude!
Yeah, i was really "Is this a kids movie?" when i heard that line.
