Agree, plus the romantic say English or European cottage look just resonates with some people. I just dont think you can make these blanket statements or edicts for what's in and what's out. I have clients with small kids, from 18 most, to 12 they do live on a farm (16 acres) the husband is British, he grew up on a huge farm, he now manages a farm for a wealthy family. They are lovely people but when I helped her decorate her house, I wasnt going for elevated, luxe, refined, sophisticated. I did steer away from cliches, but the same look is not for everyone! Not that people need to be told that.

Practical advice for fake “farmhouse” in suburbs

When I was a child my family lived in a real, old “farm house” on 100 acres. The barn doors were outside on the barns. There were no signs inside the house directing people to various locations. Apparently we knew where we were and where we were going. That said, watching this video brought some feelings of dismay. I feel much in the interior design world has become increasingly trendy, incredibly temporary and often meaningless. I truly miss the “real” no matter what the decor choice.

Re: Dismay over current interior design styles being trendy/temporary/meaningless:
I think the word you're looking for is “kitchy” - a tacky, almost cartoonish object alluding to a certain aesthetic without actually being of the genre.
For example, pictures of the Eiffel Tower, a “Paris” sign, printed pillows saying, “Vivre la France” and a metal bucket embossed with the word “Fleurs.”
This kind of questionable taste used to be confined to the kitchen, where daisies, ducks, roosters and livestock have dwelled for decades. Desperate for originality (and lacking imagination) some turned to kitch in an attempt to create unpretentious “destination spaces” in their homes.
I commiserate with you, my friend. My childhood home had a velvet matador painting at the end of the hall which my parents thought exotic and worldly. The bedroom with its dark wood furniture and bright satins was downright garish.
I have an aunt & uncle whose den was decked out in sports memorabilia associated with their favorite team. Tacky doesn’t begin to describe it, but they were happy as pigs in ...uh, the *kitch*en. Come Sunday, the whole family donned their team jerseys. I guess the idea is ‘when one can’t make it to the venue, bring the venue into the home....’

I couldn't agree more. To me a home is evolved and somewhat eclectic which reflects travels, memories, sentimental passed down treasures, etc.. Those are truly comfortable homes that are unique and not fly by night latest trends. European homes are a perfect example. Lovely

our last house was an actual 1860s farmhouse. small not over the top nods worked there. for example while we did a barn door to save space in one area, it also wasn't over the top reclaimed wood. it was a standard white door with classic clean black finishes. we added a classic modern lines but subtle curved feet white marble vanity that looked both modern and Victorian original in a sense at once (to replace the cutesy very farmhouse vanity from the 70s). I don't have any of those things in our 15 year old home now hardly. I like the other commenter- know style of your home when it was built, your area, and do what is timeless for that.

Modern farmhouse / cottage looks wonderful when the house is in a rural environment.
Coastal / Hamptons looks gorgeous when the house is near a coastline, beach or lake.
Industrial looks edgy in warehouse conversions.
The interior styling tip is to be considerate of your environment and architectural elements of your home.
Then choose what you and your family enjoy and find beautiful.
Valentina changes her spaces every year by painting, new furnishings, lighting fixtures etc, so that she has new content for the channel.
I'm certain Valentina would find my colourful eclectic home too overwhelming for her style but l find white, black and beige rather uninteresting, for my style.
You'll be empowered and comfortable in your home when your home reflects your personality and is functional for your needs 😍

So what about suburbia where every day people live since you mentioned beach/coastal & rural?

    • @bitrudder3792
      @bitrudder3792 8 місяців тому

@@r-e_mii- after watching the interiors of suburban houses for the last 30 something years, I can tell you one thing: there are a lot of dreadful “improvements“ that have been made as people try to update their houses for sale.
Everything we consider classic was at one time new. Suburbia is a weird animal, Where Tudor, Mediterranean, colonial, neoclassical, Hacienda, French country, farmhouse, bungalow, and Heinz 57 houses live cheek by jowl. And sometimes it’s all pastiche attached to ranch-style houses. I’ve lived in suburbia nearly my entire life and have concluded that it’s OK to be authentic to suburbia. You might want to remove pastiche that doesn’t fit or you might want to embrace it. Your choice. You might want to focus on regional influences. You might want to accommodate the taste of the people that live in the house which can be opposite and challenging. For both the interior and the exterior - and the garden. Then there’s the budget. What is even realistic, when you want to be sure you have money to fix the HVAC and the water heater and replace the roof etc. Because things break and degrade over time, it’s a fact of life.
All of those different things to consider really didn’t add up to a particular style for us. I have looked at all of these factors up one side and down the other, along with all the function that I want to get out of the indoors in the outdoors of our home. And I want it to be easy to live in, and clean and move - i’m not getting any younger. I want spaces inside to pursue my interests, and that’s important. And that doesn’t always fit neatly into the style of every other room.
I examined every feature of my home and yard inside and out, physically and metaphorically.
I consulted with my husband about what styles he likes and doesn’t like over the years and that has changed a little bit.
I have observed what I like about interiors and exteriors from Photos over the decades and I find the same Elements show up over and over again, and I’m longing for the same qualities/feeling to various spaces over and over again.
Because I love color harmony, I look at that a lot and at the fixed elements that are not going to be changed, and they weren’t my first choice because 911 put a crimp in my decorating budget And options when we got started with this house.
On the other hand, I find that I still really love the light fixtures that we picked from back then. That’s a win. Part of our direction.
After playing with the idea of changing some of the exterior colors, I realized that the original colors R.… Original and thoughtfully chosen by our builder. Or a builder is no longer in business, but they are literally iconic now and there are people who shop specifically for their houses here. Cool. Suburbia is becoming iconic.
No one living in suburbia is part of a monolith, we all come to our homes with different ideas and ideals. Figure out what yours are. Decide how harmonious you want to be with what you’ve got in suburbia, or how shockingly contrasting you want to be. Make sure it fits your budget so you can finish and be happy with it. And don’t plant trees near your foundation, retaining walls, sidewalks or driveways. As a keen observer of those things, it just isn’t worth it. In general, don’t put big trees on small suburban lots. Go for modestly sized ornamentals instead unless you like repairing fences and roofs. Consider embracing original features of quality and durability unless you just hate them. Then take your time to look at the architecture, your neighbors homes, the Bio region, the flora and the fauna, The function you want, the level of maintenance you want, and see how those integrate with the taste of the people in your family. Create the space that suits your needs for either a long-term living or resale depending on how long you’re gonna live somewhere. Another free tip: a natural landscape does not look great in front of a formal house or a semi formal house for the most part. It just looks depressing and unkempt. You might be able to get away with it in front of a very contemporary house or if you do a meadow in front of a House that looks appropriate in the country as long as there’s enough room and sunlight in front of it. Otherwise it will look like garbage as well.

It is never in good taste to come across so crass, especially in criticism of someone’s personal decorum. There are tactful ways to get one’s point across without injecting “goofy” humor.
I decorate my cottage in Wales to suit my environment, and due to 260 year old stone walls, a barn door is the only option I have.
My home in the states is completely modern, but I actually like the industrial “barn” door I have that closes off my dining room. Need I call out some things you’ve completely missed the mark on? (Huge ball’s flanking your fireplace come to mind.)
The only thing spot on in needing to go is the signage, but other than that everything else is completely predilection. Cheers.

I don’t agree with much of Valentina’s approach to decor, but in this instance she is echoing the consensus of every professional designer I’ve heard speak on the subject: The excesses and “cheesiness” of the farmhouse style is in poor taste. The truth is that much of it is over-the-top and downright tacky - and Valentina was exercising a great deal of restraint in not coming straight out and saying so.
In the past, I’ve been critical of Valentina for making videos which only nix certain ideas and trends without providing alternatives. Here, Valentina is offering constructive advice to those interested in hearing it. Brava!!!
People who don’t like hearing what others think of their decor style choices needn’t watch. I certainly don’t get in a snit and type out angry messages every time a designer pokes fun at something I owned. Sometimes I think people click on these videos for the opportunity to berate designers for downvoting their individual design choice. And I think that’s about as juvenile as a painting of smiling cow hung over the stove.

Farmhouse decor can be calmed down by the sweet changes you mentioned. I have multiple family/friends who love the cozy comfortable feeling of farmhouse. We all know there are individuals who can do it well. Again, I think of you… you update your home but stay true to your style. Farmhouse, traditional, mid century modern, contemporary, etc. your style will never totally go out. All of us should never go overboard in anyone style. Moderation is the name of the design game. Mid Century Modern for alway! It is modern mid century… key word!

I completely agree. Farmhouse was just popular when I first starting my home. I have taken things out one by one, given them to my mom for her garage sale and slowly replace things with a classic clean look. Yea, I did buy a beautiful white classic sofa, Devore like travertine and marble trays or bowls, brass or classic vases similar to the ones you use and have added touches of black through things. The distressed things are gone, the signs are gone, thank goodness. You and Jack have been a great teachers to follow!

"Cottage Style and Masculine/Feminine Balance* . I never jumped on any era of Farm House. I have one piece of word art, it stays. I love cottage style. I leaned in a bit heavy on a shabby chic vibe, after a few years, it felt too busy and overly Feminine. I swapped out some furniture for mid-tone wood, added matte black accents, and shifted the color palette to earthy/moody and eliminated pink. I have muted earthy colors on the wall and oak flooring (which has seen better days) and some tile. Textiles, art and color palette can totally shift the vibe of a space. I'm a 56 yr. old single female. Too much Granny Chic was overwhelming. You will definitely feel a warm and cozy vibe when you enter my home. I learned statement vignettes are far more impactful than bric-a-brac everywhere.

We renovated a few years ago during Covid and kept some businesses in business, that being said, I went for a Hamptons style with the blue vases and the blue flowers, but since watching your channel and learning more about decorating, I’ve since changed out just about all the blue stuff I had in my home to more neutral colours and my home looks much better, it didn’t cost me much because I just spray painted most of my vases black and switched out the flowers to branches that some I just cut from the trees in my garden or from the paddock beside us, I went down the path of signs with things written on them but they all got donated when we renovated, I started with a Shabby Chic look, then went Hamptons and now I have a more neutral home and I Love it, not every wall has something on it, I’ve kept things to a minimalist look, and it makes house cleaning so much easier and less clutter around, my husband always hated how much stuff I had on our walls with signs on them, like who doesn’t know where the Bathroom is, you don’t need a sign to tell you that, the same with Laundry, I’m about the only one that goes into the laundry room Lol 😂 and I don’t need a sign to tell me where it is 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️, I loved this video, and I loved how you gave options for people who still love the Farmhouse Look, some of the comments were a little off, I think some thought you were picking Farmhouse to pieces But you did give other options for those, maybe you could of toned down the laughing so much, some people get offended by that if they don’t watch your videos on a regular basis and know you get excited about things, maybe your laugh is a nervous thing, I find your laugh infectious and have implemented so much of your recommendations into my own home and it’s turned out lovely 🥰, So Thank You Guys for sharing your experience and knowledge here on UA-cam. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🇦🇺

While we were building our house we were thinking "farmhouse" in general, but with a more Florida/Spanish/industrial detail. Since moving in four years ago, we've leaned more into the rustic industrial with a bit of tropical (think Florida, Flagler Railroad, Ybor City). I think the difference is that if you love the look of something, then it's not a trend to you. Every time we saw farmhouse-y styles that everyone was doing, we didn't want it. We finally realized that we were only going for farmhouse because that was what was popular. With a little more searching and education, we found out what we really liked and for us it's pretty timeless!

Not long ago, I helped my cousins clean out their mother's home that was chock full of farmhouse things. We had to go to 3 different consignment shops to get rid of the furniture because 2 of the shops said they had too much that wasn't even selling! At the 3rd shop we tried, they said they'd take the things but said they'd be pricing it quite low. For instance - a large rustic coffee table that she paid almost $2,000 for and was in perfect condition was priced by the consignment shop for only $200 😳 and as far as I've heard, its been 3 months and it still hasn't sold. 🤷‍♀️ And that was the nicest piece she had! Needless to say in the end, my cousins probably should've just let an auction/estate reseller company take it all for a lump sum or had an auction but they didn't. Many people (like my cousins) just don't pay attention to style or resale value and they end up shocked to learn how little they will actually get for a house full of trends - especially when the trend is O.V.E.R ! I think its a good lesson and one to apply everytime BEFORE you buy pricey furniture or decor. Its much better to buy timeless pieces that don't look like a certain trend or decade.

I think the essence of Modern Farmhouse is that 50% of the population lives in non urban settings where it is appropriate. Additionally, there is an element of a "homey" feelings that at the age most people can afford renovations, they want to relive their childhood and impart their childhood to their children. I think that is why Modern Traditional is really taking off in recent years with the art work that is now trendy (WHO saw moody pastorals and gothic landscapes being the thing the young people want) and wall paneling, museum lighting, etc

A number of styles can be "ELEVATED" by simply attending to proportion/
scale/texture/function whether items are ultra-modern or more vintage!
Also as one's style/life evolves, it's important to assess/re-assess the "VOLUME" of things one prefers to live with. For a "Minimalist" the volume will be low; while a "Maximalist" at heart may abide more "controlled chaos".
To equate Modern Farmhouse with canning jars/ burlap/barn-doors/
    & Abundant (HollyLobbyish)Signage seems a bit of a dismissive over-simplication as many
humble items can be displayed with flare...
as Joanna Gaines did in many of her farmhouse
    renditions (with their minimalist leanings).
It is simply not true that an "ELEVATED" style is ONLY some minor adaptation of Minimalist Modern ( in mostly neutral colors)...though that may be one's PREFERENCE!

Superb video. I so loved the banter between you guys. Y'all are hilarious. So nice to see the hubby be involved and understand decorating. I would love to see a video about decorating for specific styles of homes besides farmhouses...lol. Also, where do you draw the line of just enough and not too much stuff. I was almost about to be sad when you said no more farm doors....we just bought a new home and the in-law suite is separated from the rest of the house with a sliding door. Was glad to hear that they are great as long as it doesn't look like a barn door which mine doesn't. My new home has rooms where the ceilings are painted the same color as the walls. Is that still a thing? The colors are nice, but a bit dark. My home is a lightish gray brick ranch that was built in 2017...an upper scale home. Just wondering if I should paint all the rooms white and should you put up curtains even tho there are beautiful white wood blinds? Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Will definitely check out your amazon store for those rugs.

Everyone's house decor is looking "cut and paste", farmhouse or not. Lol. Need more creativity and originality. If one shops at the top 10 UA-cam decor inspo stores, then unfortunately it's all tired. With that said , it really is what you like regardless of "trend".

My sister-in-law and I love your channel. My house is surrounded by very large trees and my interiors do not get a lot of direct sunlight. Plus, I have a brown thumb. Where is the best place to get large potted trees?

Give up a vintage rug for an Amazon rug… you must be kidding

I was listening pretty carefully and I don’t think that’s what she was saying. It’s those cheap *modern* rugs that are *made to look as though they’re old, worn and faded* - the ones supposed to give that cozy, “lived in” vibe which Valentina is suggesting need to go.
I’ve been in the market for a new bedroom rug for a while now and it’s been extremely frustrating: almost all new, patterned rugs have that kind of mottled, uneven look to them. Some (if not most) are designed to appear they’ve worn unevenly - as when one corner is much lighter than the rest of the rug. At a distance they might look like a worn vintage rug, but up close they just look cheap, weird - and certainly not elevated, elegant or tasteful.
Regardless, please remember that just because something is vintage doesn’t mean it’s of good quality or worth saving.🤷🏻‍♀️

You have helped me tremendously. I’m in the process of prepping for the fall/winter season so I’m a bit of a standstill with my interior. It does have a neutral setup with the exception of … I’ll keep that to myself lest I invite much criticism. We are working on repairing our front stoop. That is the focus. Granite vs. brick - no brick. Perhaps a combination of granite with blue slate- not sold on that combo. Pavers were mentioned but the snow and salt to melt the ice could be problematic. I like the granite. It is nice.we’ll see. Any suggestions. They’re welcomed. ❤

Would you still use the Henn&Hart Elma coffee table in a living room in black from your Amazon storefront? Or what might you recommend for a current coffee table in a living room that is slightly modern but more “classic” overall.

I enjoyed this video even though I love color. We use shades of blue and green that flow from one room to another in a very open floor plan. And it works for us. I AM going straight to my living room and editing out a few things that aren’t adding anything to the room, going for a more restful (yet colorful) look. I enjoy your channel even though our approaches are very different. I’ve learned a lot, thank you!

Those modern bubble vases and giant spheres etc. will look just as cliche and dated soon. I think the modern trends are just as bad.
