Love that you showed all the multiple examples of sofas being too big. Sometimes I need more than one example to know what you mean exactly. Very helpful!!!
Loved this video you should do a series where viewers send in photos of a room and you could help give advice for whatever it is we are try to go for in our spaces. I love your advice you have helped me so much in designing my home thank you!
Watching this, I immediately moved a chair in the living room and that made a walkway much bigger. Now the vintage midcentury chair in its new place is shown off like the piece of art that it is!
I think short of putting it on graph paper for some people to visualize, people don't understand. BUT when you take away a 36" (3ft) walkway around the whole room, there really isn't that much interior space to be a room left in the center. Visually your room looks huge, but actual available space after a 36" walkway is much smaller. Her main camera angle doesn't show this, but at the 9:25 marker you can definitely see the room scale. I once had a similar floor plan, and had mine the same way. She keeps it uncluttered with less, but larger accessories. You are actually seeing the result of her brilliant advice, visually the room looks larger than the workable 10x14 space.
I’m still amazed at how much your style has been refined over the past 3yrs. Every video of your lounge takes my breath away and all I can say is wow. ❤ I have an impossible layout to work with too.

And my kitchen behind me living room. I can’t decide. On 3 seat sofa with 4 accents chairs. A seactional with 2 chairs . Or two sofas and two chairs
Thanks for doing a video that shows your room / home and not just film you sitting on your sofa talking… seeing your home demonstrating your talking points really makes such a difference in how I can envision what you are saying…application of ideas in a more personal way feels more powerful than just words.
Could you do a video on choosing between dark vs light wall colors? I’ve seen so many images on gorgeous dark rooms like yours, but the idea of newly doing it is intimidating & I do like the brightness & lightness of white walls too. Wondering when it’s better vs worse to consider dark cozy wall colors.
I'm sorry everyone keeps saying that you're lying! People don't understand the actual living space vs walkways! If that room was closed off with a wall and the walkway was actually a hallway, you wouldn't count it, so I don't understand why people keep saying they have to include the walkway lol I agree, your room is on the "smaller" side but with your high ceiling, lack of walls, and all the design tricks you've utilized, it really makes it look much bigger (which is the point of the video 🤷♀️) I guess the fact that everyone keeps saying it's bigger than what you said means you've done a great job! @@HouseofValentina Your living room is Beautiful. You’re truly amazing. Once again, like I mentioned in your the Facebook group . People forget to use videos like this one. “AS A GUIDE “ !!!!
I think small is relative to where you live. Maybe in Atlanta thats a small livingroom haha. Ive hardly got room for a sofa and a chair and a little ottoman off to the side (plus small square coffee table) and im lucky I'm actually not just restricted to just a sofa like some people I know! I live in Vancouver BC and there are many big homes for the ultra wealthy but your average person is living in a condo. I live in an 1143 st ft loft and I feel extremely fortunate because I looked at a lot of real estate before choosing this home and yeah, it gets a lot smaller here! Now all that aside - tips are great for all sizes of rooms you want to appear larger. The rug being as large as possible is seriously such a big one!
Painting the lounge/dining/kitchen white has not only transformed them but me too. The rooms are telling me to keep decor/furniture simple and intentional. I smile every time I’m in there even though the floors need updating. It’s a much needed new beginning for me.
I needed to see this so thank you! I have a console table between my wall and sofa. There is a heater vent back there and for a long time the sofa covered it. I have also put a bit of decor with a painting over it. I was afraid it might look too cluttered but seeing yours, (which looks beautiful!) I feel so much better! I use 2 end tables which I wish I didn’t need but I do. Also, My furniture is in an L shape…yes, the cardinal sin of matching furniture but I suck at getting the scale right. 😢. I would like to replace the ottoman with a coffee table but haven’t found one that works yet. The room is open and feels large but the tv and stand are against the same wall as the front door. It is a beautiful piece but the walkway crosses in front of it. Which I don’t mind as it opens up the room. ❤ So in a way, my focal point, would be the living room/sofa/painting above. I hate clutter, but love properly done decor so I get a little stressed if too much is out.
You are so good and informative and I was just curious if you had ever gone to Interior Design School or did you learn on your own? Thank you Valentina❤
I really liked the marble top coffee tables you had before but I love this new one! So high end looking, warm and quite beautifully subtle amongst the contrasting black & white.
My living room is like yours. The overall space feels huge, but the actual footprint of viable living room space is tiny. Mine is thanks to an oddly placed staircase and the builder's halfhearted attempt at an open concept dining room.
Hello Valentina! I grew up in a beautiful huge house in the 60s 70s Your house and living room is huge in heights and those big window help! By the size or your rug and the sofas, i think you forgot your real mesurements! But my dream was nice to have it look like yours!😊 🙋✌️🇨🇦
I am always inspired by your videos. In this video, you show us a shot of your former-styled living room with the large mocha leather chair; however, what I am interested in is the map over the fireplace (and is now in your work area over a buffet-style table) in that clip. Can you tell me where I can get your map or recommend maps similar to yours? Thanks....Anna
No way your living room is 10 x 14 !! I’m planning to paint one of my walls black in my 20x18 living/dining area of my condo hoping it’s a success. I have been watching you for a while and your videos have been so entertaining and helpful.❤ Thank you Valentina
She admitted that the rug is 10x12 so no way her space is only 10x14. I painted my fireplace wall black and absolutely love it. I then painted my powder room black. I think you will really like doing a black accent wall. I used Sherwin Williams Urban Bronze. It’s a warm black.
I’m truly grateful for all your knowledge. You have helped me make better choices and decisions when decorating my home. ??question where did you buy the map in your office space from??
I love your living room! The struggle I have is that my fireplace is not centered on the masonry wall, so my focal point is thrown off. It means the whole wall is the focal point, which includes the TV next to the fireplace. I love symmetry, so it's been a challenge! As always, love you and your video content!
Work with it, the focal point does not have to be in the centre of the wall. The key is to ensure it is done in a way that your eye goes there first. Consider highlighting the fireplace wall more by painting that a more dominant colour so that the TV side falls into the background.
Windows for sure make the room looks larger. I actually have a similar room to yours nearly the same size. Isn’t fun cleaning the ceiling fan? I can’t have a TV in the room either which is fine the sound is c r a z y with the high ceilings.
Just started watching your videos and i must say I LOVE your design style! Thank you for all of the great tips. Love the living room Especially the black fireplace wall!!!!! ❤❤ 🥵
My condo had a fireplace but my house now does not have one. My family room is a lot bigger than 10' x 14'. Since I don't watch t.v & don't have a fireplace, I use my backyard view/flowers as my focal point, & my couch faces that way. Flowers bloom year round here.
Hi Valentina! I bing watch your channel and love it! My style is very similar with a little less black lol but I was wondering if you can talk about things like kitchen shelf liners, garage storage, and how you store the not so pretty things. If you can talk more about wood floors and tile that looks like wood, especially for open concept homes and the worry about wood floors in the kitchen due to water damage. I hope this can be a topic for your content :)
Thank you so much for this video! I’m trying to decide if I can pay out my fireplace black like yours. My living room is not two-story. The ceilings are 9 feet tall. The fireplace is also on an angle. What would be some factors to help me decide if it would make my room look bigger?
Appreciated your comments on trends. I live in a Vic cottage. I think pure one single style is boring. I have family heirlooms. I placed an Edwardian dresser in the living room. Using things in unexpected ways is fun. I get what you were saying. Mix it.
When are you going to share with us the new coffee table? I have seen it in your LTK mood board but there is no link to it there. I also have a small living room. White Sofa facing two matching nice size chairs, fireplace as focal point in center of far wall. I’m thinking any coffee table will need to be close to the sofa color or especially a glass top to take up less visual space. That would also allow my carpet to continue to been seen and I feel that will help the space appear larger also.
I just measured mine and it's only 11' x 17'... She's got to be measuring wrong or not telling the truth. That view from above compared to the size of her body you can tell it's much larger than what she says
Agreed, plus consoles, a dresser and that gorgeous RH wall unit. My living room is 11.5 feet x 17.5 feet and it is not nearly as large as Valentina's. Something is off here.
She extended her living space into the walkways. I said it somewhere else but that’s the benefit of not being confined by walls. I think most living spaces are.
@@CourtneeCae13 it still doesn't make sense. Mine is 11 x 17 and if I set two sofas up like that with a large coffee table like she has, you wouldn't even be able to walk through. From the ends of the sofa to the fireplace is still pretty roomy. MAYBE her measurement could be accurate if she's measuring from the back of one sofa to the other along with the length only of the sofas, but looking at my 11 x 17 LR doing that still wouldn't have as much space as she does
Agreed. I just measured my living room, which is 13.5’ wide. I can fit two sofas across from each other, but it would be very tight, and there’s no way I could fit even one narrow console table behind one of them and still fit a coffee table.
I love your living room and I love the way you took a small space and made it look larger. I am building a very small little cottage house 780 ft.². But it has a vaulted ceiling of 14 feet high. The one thing that I might do different if I had your living room was the fireplace surround needs to be white marble or some thing. I’m not sure I would paint the whole thing completely black It’s so diminishes the most beautiful part of the living room which is the fireplace surround. But that’s just my opinion otherwise you were living room with the windows the high ceiling are incredibly beautiful
The mirror over the fireplace looks good, but I think my favorite was when you just had like 1 or 2 black items up there--it was so unexpected and interesting!
I love all of your videos. They are so informational, and so many great tips that we can all apply to our homes. The struggle that I have personally is lighting, I have pot lights I have accent, lighting and fixed ceiling lights etc. etc. is it possible for you to make a video on what kind of lightbulbs to use in each of these light fixtures and rooms? Would love love love to have some help in this area. ❤❤❤
Can we talk more about making focal points in small living rooms where we dont have a fireplace. Right now with our current set up I’d say our focal point is either the floor to ceiling floating book shelves or the windows because I have tall curtains in. I wanted to put a gallery wall above the couch and just use like a big main photo or something im not sure lol any advice?
This video may have stired up more controversy than you intended with your " small room"😂...nevertheless, there was great pointers and tips to take away. My small LR is 10x 14 and I can not even have 1 regular size sofa...( but I have to contend with other restrictive wall layout, wall heater, etc). Thanks for the tips!!
Thank you for your enthusiasm and awesome information, wondering what would be the best paint colors for cape cod home with angled walls in 2 rooms and dark hallway in between, thinking of the 2 end walls with window as ascent color thnking dark blue and light cream color walls and trim.
Mine is 10x 14 and then the walkways add to the feel of the space but not the function of the space. It’s basically a small living room without walls so it feels larger when it fact the outsides are all walkways.
Would you say a console table in a walkway separating a living room from a kitchen must also be on the rug? I have my sofa the perfect distance from my tv over my fireplace, but I want to place a console table behind the sofa across from the fireplace and tv. I hate to push in my sofa, but then again, I don't want to throw the whole room off by having a floating console. I'm not sure what the "right" thing to do is.
I have a long narrow open concept kitchen/dining/living room. I hate it! I had to get rid of my round kitchen table that was too big (but loved) for the dining area in this house. I still have a sectional that’s also too big that I need to replace. Working on building a mood board for my living room and on the hunt for great quality sofas that won’t wear down in a year or two after my child, spills, and the dog have touched it. I’m sick of buying sofas. Lol. Tips per budget range? We have a pottery barn but no crate and barrel or other places you mention. Buying online scares me.
This video is what I need right now as I'm about to redesign and renovate our living room, so thank you so much for the tips! I adore yours, you made such a great job!
Thank you for sharing
Any advice for what to make the focal point if we don’t have a fireplace and just tv?
I would like to see your finished laundry room.
Did you paint your living room closet the same color as your laundry room and your bedroom closet ?
Appreciated your comments on trends. I live in a Vic cottage. I think pure one single style is boring. I have family heirlooms. I placed an Edwardian dresser in the living room. Using things in unexpected ways is fun. I get what you were saying. Mix it.
Thanks V. Hey did any catch where the coffee table was bought?
When are you going to share with us the new coffee table? I have seen it in your LTK mood board but there is no link to it there. I also have a small living room. White Sofa facing two matching nice size chairs, fireplace as focal point in center of far wall. I’m thinking any coffee table will need to be close to the sofa color or especially a glass top to take up less visual space. That would also allow my carpet to continue to been seen and I feel that will help the space appear larger also.
Great video, I am struggling with a small living room too. What sofas do you have?
If you have room for two sofa's, your living room is nowhere near small!
Great video!!
Thank you so much!
Great tips!
If you ever critique or give advice on your subscribers homes let me know!! I’d love to see what you think of our house and how to make it better! :)
This is beautiful what about the tv is there one in the living room?
I do really love those marble coffee tables as well!!!
Could you address decorating when one has five feet two inch wainscot in an open floor plan. How does one decorate an open floor plan with wainscot?
Hello Valentina, can you recommend a olive black color? I’m thinking of painting my dining room and ceiling.
Thanks! ❤
Look at Sherwin Williams Urban Bronze. Supposedly has a green undertone
Is your room 10 x 14 without the walkways? My living room is 10 x 14 and couldn’t fit your furniture, I live in a Victorian house in England.
Mine is 10x 14 and then the walkways add to the feel of the space but not the function of the space. It’s basically a small living room without walls so it feels larger when it fact the outsides are all walkways.
I love the sofa! Do you mind sharing the link and also give a feedback. I have 2 little kids!
I love those four huge windows, it was a genius idea to the out the ceiling to achive the height and look. I wish Article would sell in Europe too because I'm in love with those gorgeous sofas with the marble coffee table tables....❤❤❤
