Just set up a 20-gallon tall Lake Tanganyika tank with 5 Lamprologus ocellatus and I'm loving it! Pretty pricey for being a little cichlid but they are charismatic and fun. Great video, really helped me set up the tank. I'm running the tank at an 8-8.4ish pH and and was worried that it was too low for a cichlid, but your video gave me some more confidence.
Thanks for sharing this video stretching my compassion for shell dwelling fish. It's a pretty neat fish for sure. I'm a new friend.left you a like and subscribe
Nice video, informative. They are great little fish. My first two lots of fry were eaten sadly, and today I've just removed the shell with fry to a small breeder container in the parents tank for safety.
You guys convinced me it's time for my 55 malawi tank with a single ob cichlid to convert to lake Tanganyika so my OB can have his (new to me) 72 bowfront.
@PrimeTimeAquatics I've had the perfect flat slabs of grey rock just like what you've got in a few of your tanks. Do you have any suggestions on water flow and filtration for them? Fast, slow, lake style or river style movement?
I have a panther crab I am setting up a 20 long for, he took a tail off one of my guppies. I have not found a lot of information on them. Do you think an aggressive fish like this would be okay with the panther crab?
Hey thank you for the information Jason. Do you think fry would be preyed upon in a 40 breeder? Would it be better to have a 40 as the breeding tank, and a 20Long as a grow out. Or the other way around? Or 2 20 longs?
Hello! For a 20 gallon long, do you think 4 fish would be good to start out with? Or what is a good amount to put in there starting out? Id like to get a 55 gallon tank for them soon. I have the 20 gallon cycled and ready to go, plenty of sand and big shells to hide in!
I have five in a 20 long right now without issues. Everyone seems to have their own space and I've recently added some rock work to break up lines of sight a little. If they start having fry, the fry will have to be removed in order to survive. Thanks for watching!
Hi, If I were to get 5 juveniles 1 inch size.. would it be okay to house them in a 15 gallon tank and how long would it take for them to reach breeding stage.
1" is getting to about the size they may start fighting with one another more. It could be hit or miss. Right now I have four in a 10 gallon, but they grew up together.
I have my cypts in a three foot 40 breeder right now, but would prefer them to be in at least a four foot tank. The ocellatus are quite aggressive and might beat on the cypts when they are breeding in a tank that small. If I were going to mix the two, I'd probably do it in a taller four foot tank like a 55 gallon or above.
I would say discus probably wouldn't work just based on water parameters. Fronts enjoy the same water parameters coming from the same lake. However, small fronts would be easily bullied by these little guys (they are quite aggressive) and larger fronts might see them as a snack.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thx for reply..... should we buy dwelling fish in colonies( with a single breeder) or we can get few counts when everpossible from different pet shop?
Right now they are in a 20 long and are doing fine. I don't think I would go any smaller. Each male is going to claim about 6" all around his shells. If I get a breeding pair I will probably remove the other fish if aggression gets to be too much. Hope this helps!
It would probably work for a small group of multis - some of the other shellies might be a little too aggressive if they start having babies. The gold occellatus can get territorial and each male usually claims about a 6in diameter space within the tank. Nice looking tank!

Nice video. Ocellatus are great looking little fish. I have a colony of Multis in a 60. I may have to try these one day as well.
I love them both! Thanks for watching
love all your tanganyika cichlids
I bought one of these for my specialist community. 40 bucks, but damn was it worth it. Such an amazing fish. Hes a miniature dovii

Thanks for watching! I love all shellies - such cool fish

Cool - hopefully it works out better this time!
thank you for this video i've been eyeing these guys at my lfs and now i just might get some but man they are pricey :P
Hey Tyler,
I know - around here they can easily go for $30 - $40 each! They are one of my favorite shellies though.
dang thats to bad my lfs are 30 for 2 20 for 1 so i'll really have to take them of their hands thanks for the reply and info :)
I need these guys in my life!!
You are not alone! : -)
Great video! I love shell dwellers!

U have a question: would the regular ocellatus mate with a gold one?
Ya, they would all hybridize
I mixed these guys with tiger barbs and they make great tank mates. No fighting between the two species.
I could see that working with a decent sized tank where the tiger barbs could stay near the surface more.
Interesting.

I haven’t kept them so I’m not sure?
Cool
Ocellatus the tiny titan..;)...a 60 cm long tank is enough for breeding 4 or 5 young?
I’d probably just do one pair.

The larger the tank, and more hiding spots available, the more likely the fry will survive!

Excellent video where can i purchase some of these Beautiful fish or any shellies or multies, please
love ur channell
I have only seen them online or through my local fish club. I'm not sure I've ever seen them at a local fish store.
Was wondering how and where I can purchase fish from you? Was planning on setting up a shell dweller tank. Thanks!
Right now I just sell through Chicagoland swaps and auctions.
@@PrimeTimeAquaticsanywhere you recommend they seem to be hard to find, either way thanks!
Can cherry shrimp go with shell dwellers?
I probably wouldn't try it.
I like these too😄
They just started having babies too. Will do an update soon. : -)
What about housing these guys in a 30 gal with some CYPRICHROMIS LEPTOSOMA? That should work... Will it?

Can bettas betta be kept with these
These guys would probably kill the betta
I've been told this species tends to eat its young. Any problems with that yet? Great video, Thanks in advance!
That is true. This group hasn't bred for me yet because they are still a little young, but I will separate the young once I start seeing them.
how many can we put in a 20 standard?
Depends if you want to breed them? You might be able to get two pairs in a 20 long?
Can we have discus or fontosa fish with them?
I would say discus probably wouldn't work just based on water parameters. Fronts enjoy the same water parameters coming from the same lake. However, small fronts would be easily bullied by these little guys (they are quite aggressive) and larger fronts might see them as a snack.

Any for sale? Thanks
I currently don't ship fish - just move them through local clubs/swaps/auctions.
Prime Time Aquatics . Please let me know when you do plan on shipping them again thanks.
Will do
How big a tank is recommended for this awesome guys/girls

Were to buy shells
I get them from amazon. They are escargot shells.
How many can I put in a 10 gallon
I would only do a pair. These little guys are aggressive!
I love ocellatus they think they are a big fish but they aren’t 😂
They sure do!
Where I live the “2 BIG Chain Pet Stores” put ALL but 1 independent aquarium shop out of business which made getting Hard To Get Fish near impossible.
That really stinks!
What do you mean 20 long? Is it in inches?
A 20 long is a 20 gallon tank that is 30" long instead of the standard 24".
Will this be a good tank for a small family of shell dwellers. dennerle.com/de/produkte/aquaristik/aquascaping/aquarien/scapers-tank-complete-50-l
