Shell Dwellers | My favorite nano fish (Neolamprologus multifasciatus & Lamprologus ocellatus gold)

- Here are my 2 shell dwellers: Neolamprologus multifasciatus and Lamprologus ocellatus gold. They are nano fish with BIG attitude! These dwarf cichlids are also known as shellies or shell dwelling cichlids because they use large snail shells to hide and spawn in. They originate from lake Tanganyika in Africa. I have had sucsess in breeding the multies but not the ocellatus yet.

Dont flatten out the sand, they do that so the current will carry the food to their shells for their babies
I have six in a 40 breeder with over 50 shells. Many have been completely buried. Their temporary roommates are 10 2-3" rainbows. I never thought a fish could out-compete rainbows for food, but these Goldies practically knock the rainbows out of the tank. In fact, when I was gravel vaccing, the dominant male waged an all out war on the tube... before he switched to my arm... which he kept biting. If these guys got 2 feet long and lived in the ocean the world's beaches would be empty! I love the multies too - next on my list!
Such a wonderful video to watch and relax to!
They are so crazy yet so fun. Definetly became my fav fish. Tiny sharks haha
Very nice! i would add more shells tho. This is the least i've seen in most shell dwellers i've researched recently.
I can definetly add more ^_^
Graeme Patrick. Quit trolling. This is a great video, plenty of shells, lovely voice, In fact, watching this video was the greatest experience of my life!!!
Jason Texas trolling? they recommend 5 shells per fish
@@jasontexas6557 shut up white knight
My old take was smaller but it had loads of shells, I had two males and 3 females, they all had their own shells and use to breed all the time.
I love this tank so much
Very nice video, interesting and beautiful.
You need more shells 10 is not enough for 5 fish
Cool thanks enjoyed the video 😊👍❤
How do you like cleaning the inside glass around ?😂 mine bite me so bad. Ocellatus have been my tank a while now but Shellie Cichlids are so awesome I’ve had 6 different kinds and loved them all. Neolamprologus Similis are my favorite. I let the algae do its thing I just can’t win when you have tons of fry.
@L0g1st1cs_Man or they just hated when you put your hand in their territory... Think about It.... eu 😂
Lucca Lourencini oh mine hate my hand soooo much!😂
I use one hand to clean the glass and in another I hold tongs or a chopstick and distract them with it. They cant bite two things at once 😉
Hello, I would like your opinion on something.. Is is OK to use sea shells instead of the ones that I mostly see in other videos ?? I really want to breed some of the shell dwellers and saw that you have a few in your tank.. I used to live at the beach and have tons of those kind of shells and just thought I would ask.. I would probably boil them just for sterilization purposes.. Thanks for sharing your tanks with all of us out here..
Ours too
Do you prefer the multis or gold ocellatus?
If all you had was a 10 gallon, how many would you put in there?
A low boy would be a great tank with them 50gal
I think you need more shells plenty more
One day when I have a fish room I definitely wanna have these fish!
I got some today 😁🤘😁
Needs a lot more sand but its probably too late as its a 2 year video
ger a lowboy, perfet for those guys.
hi, what lighting and K rating is on this tank? thanks
Moar shells! I've had losses from them fighting over shells. Beautiful setup though!
Ill add more shells
how is the fish ?? Did they breed?
Wow, these are the coolest fish ever! I love watching all their unique behaviours.
I've really been thinking about getting these guys💓 have you seen Rachel O' Leary's? They are thriving
I'm going to look them up ^_^
Do you still have some ?
I have 4 of these little shelliies. (Oscalotus) 3 have a shell and 1 was being picked on. I moved him because I was afraid he was going to be killed. I have 3 in a 20 gallon long. Should i put the 4th one back or try to get another couple to spread out the aggression? Thanks & enjoy your vacation.
That was the first time I've seen one swim in a shell. Pretty neat and cute!
Awesome Video Thanks for sharing FishFam NJAE19
They look great. I am going to be setting up a shell sweller tank here soon. Either a 40g breeder or 55g. I have a pair of peacock gudgeons that spawn NON STOP and it always seems to happen right after a water change. I am looking forward to setting up this tank
Question-Do you buffer the water and if so, with what?
Anyone who can tell me how many multis I can keep in a 60x30x30cm aquarium?
Good night, where i can find some shells like that? In internet plz, i'm from Brazil! Thanks
Do you have use Aragonite sand in a multi tank or are you just using pool filter sand/ other sand? Thanks in advance
Love your set up, I'm local and would like to get some this year from you. Jason's tank is a 50 lowboy btw.
Thank you so much Creative Pet Keeping for this video. I want to get some of these guys but didn't know anything about them. This was so educational & informative. Thank you! Where can a person get shells @?
That's a beautiful aquarium with nice substrate and some cool fish 👍
Thank you
Hello! Nice vídeo!! I need some shesll, u can tell me some website? Thanks
I've been looking to get some. I'm glad to see you're part of the GCCA. Will you be at the usual winter swap meets?
Hello, wondering where you got the shells? Thanks 😊
Beautiful fish! What type of sand are you using?
Do you have an opinion on Caudopunctatus?
Blood worms with a large water change will get them to spawn.. Every Time.. I would Not keep any other fish in the tank, if you want them to spawn and be successful at giving you some babies.. Also, I would put in 5 more shells and locate them on one end of the tank and the other end.. Since you have two males, keeping the shells on separate ends will work best.. Very clean tank and nice looking Shellies.. Great job on the Multies !! Several babies, Awesome !! Very good idea to let the lighting from the above tank to light up the one on the bottom..
I recently realized the bloodworm waterchange combo and I've raising lots of babies 😃
Interesting fish thank you for sharing love your tank❤🐠🐟🐡😊
Her name is Mi-shell.... 🤔🙄😁
Hi nice the video And your fish tank any frys ?
Nice shell dwellers. New sub. Saw your fish keepers profile on the wonder of cichlids page. Great video.
Thats awesome!! I hope you will enjoy my videos.
Ocellatus are notorious bout eating their own fry, maybe it wasn't the guppies fault...
I need to get better at pulling the shells so I can try and raise a spawn in a hang on the back container.
I really like these lake tanganyika shell dwellers but they like a higher ph I’ve heard. I tried to set up a tank for them and added crushed coral to the sand hoping to get the ph higher but I still wasn’t able to reach a ph higher then 7 so I gave up on them. They are a beautiful fish and their behavior is what I found most interesting. Maybe I’ll try them once I figure out a way to provide them with the right water parameters. Cool video
If you get captive bred fish you can get away with lower pH. Its better to work with the pH you have ^_^
Can you make a video on how you do micro worms and other live foods I’m interested to see how you do it
Cool breeds. Thanks for sharing :)
Great video and great fish. I’ve got 4 of these guys in my 29 gallon. I would recommend about 20 more shells
I added more and it helped!
Where did you get the shells? Awesome video!
Water change day and a new video to watch while I do it!!! Yay!
Great looking fish. Fun to see them Flare at each other.
How much do these fish usually sell for?
have you thought of selling some of these guys once they have fry?
I'd like to locally as they don't ship too well
You have a very healthy and pretty appearance. I love you videos.
Can cherry shrimp go with shell dwellers?
They will eat the shrimp as they are very territorial and predatory
40 breeder? Absolutely!
She's got nice hands...
U got 2 get 2 Petco during the dollar per gallon sales and get those lil buggers a 40g
Oneday. I cant have to many big tanks in my appartment..they barely let me have one 55gal
I want some!! Been wanting shellies for awhile, are they from a lfs, on-line, or a swap?
They are from the GCCA Swap
feeding gets me excited as well
Just add more shells....
Please do a species spotlight on German blue ram and gold ram
Ive actaully never owned them before..but if I ever do or if one of my friends have some I will ^_^
Thanks for the info and fantastic fish you are very beautiful
Thank you
I hope you're going to be at aquashella in Dallas in March, I would love to meet you.
I definely will!! 😀
I thought bettas would be your favourite nano fish
I do like bettas a lot but the Ocellatus stole my heart
I want multies, but they are hard to acquire around here.
I hope more people breed them because they are such lovely entry level shellies
Lol guppy jail 😂
Hi, love your set-ups. What kind of filtration are you running for both tanks? Thanks
I am using an external hang on the back filter with a sponge blocking the intake. Both filters are different brands but seem to work the same. I am considering switching everything to sponge filters though.
Thank you! I have a hang on back, but keeping the sand out of the magnet has been a headache
This Vídeo is amazing!!
Awesome awesome love this tank set up
I love your fish
These fish are fascinating.
I really love watching them ^__^
I enjoyed this video very much! I live in Chicago and would be interested in 8 multies at the next swap. How could we arrange this, so I can for sure get them? Thanks very much.
My babies need to grow up but I'll ask Jason from Primetimeaquatics because he has a huge group so he might be able to sell you some. You can comment on his newest video and ask him as well.
