Ok, so here's what I remember as a child when my parents and I went to see Star Trek the Motion Picture.
It was at the State Theatre in Ithaca NY. They had a star map(Cornell lent it from their observatory) projected on the ceiling. The opening music score went on for a long while as people came in and got seated. I don't have or recall any literature was provided(I was very young).
As each cast member appeared on the screen EVERYONE went wild. Then when the Enterprise in space dock appeared people literaly stood up cheering.
It wasn't a movie, it was an EVENT!!! 😊

Still have the collector cups and the ticket stubs from the two times I went in '79/80.

    Hi, Jim!
I actually own a few Japanese/Asian versions of this movie program because the centerfold section, in those programs, is a half scale fold-out ( gate fold ) version of the David Kimble perpspective cutaway of the TMP refit Enterprise, instead, which I find is a more interesting image that just the exterior of the ship. The David Kimbke perspective cutaway of the refit TMP Enterprise still shows the entire ship, at a very nice angle, too, but the ship is cut into to see where all of the various set locations, inside of the Enterprise, are supposed to be located.

Hi there! Thanks for the input. I think I’ll see about finding one of the Japanese versions and see how it looks. I’ve discovered quite a few Japan exclusives in my trek here on the channel (no pun intended). They added about 300 pages of exclusive content to The Star Trek Fact Files as well. That image was also available on a 22" x 48" poster, which happens to be hanging behind me right now. I bought a copy back in '79, which I pinned up to dorm room and office walls for decades. I replaced it maybe a decade ago with a fresh mint, still-rolled copy purchased off eBay. It's the replacement I had mounted on foam core and hung in my office.

A lot of the aliens appeared in the scene where Kirk arrives on the tram to Star Fleet Headquarters.

I think I asked you before about THE MOTION PICTURE TV PROMOS that showed bloopers from TOS like Kirk running into the door and voiceover saying “all the humor.”

The Japanese TMP program guide is really nice, its has a fold out of the U.S.S. Enterprise. I can't remember if its the actual model shot or the cutaway illustration.

It's a fold out ( gatefold ) of the David Kimble perspective cutaway illustration of the TMP refit Enterprise. I own a few of these Japanese/Asian ST-TMP movie prograns, as well.
I prefer the technical, perspective cutaway art version of the refit TMP E, myself over just the exterior photo of the model.
The cutaway has a lot more detail and visual interest!

I used to have that program that I was given when I sent to see TMP on opening night. Another one of those things that has gone missing all these years. 😒

I feel your pain, my friend! I had a copy as well, but it was lost in the sands of time…. Which is why it’s so fun for me to go and track these things down again. Jim On May 8, 2024, at 10:53 PM, @TheShornak

I have one of those programs! And as somebody who's gone to their fair share of LA movie premieres… sadly, no they don't give those out anymore. You get other things sometimes (photos, popcorn buckets, key ring etc) but it's mostly posters.

Over the past few years, viewers have sent me dozens of these things. I remember them, but as a child, we lived too far away for me to see first run movies. I’ve got most of the Star Trek movies, Close Encounters, Star Wars, etc. These were a great way to keep memories of premier night.

Does any one else still have the ST:TMP peel-off graphics book with those great graphics by Lee Cole? There was no way I was going to peel those stickers off, and they are still intact 44 years later.

I have two of those Lee Cole peel-off graphics sticker books as well as two of the make the ST-TMP bridge paperboard books!
      All still intact.
Also, have a complete, flat ( never used ) of all the available McDonalds ST-TMP Happy Meal boxes and other ephemera that was part of the ST McDonalds Happy Meal campaign.

Yeah the movie was good. But an ad for OMNI magazine, now that takes me back. I still think I have the complete set boxed up in my garage. Pissed me off when just a few months into a 3-year subscription they shut down. I learned my lesson.
