I notice a lot when I play that I get salty very quickly about my forces losing. Granted I've lost 90% of my games so far. I guess I'm fed up of it? But this video is making me more aware that I am getting annoyed over a game of soldiers and that I should just get over myself. Thanks Northern, keep it up
I’ve only had that happen once, and it was because it was against a style of play my preferred tactics are particularly weak against. It’s very jank, and really annoying to have to deal with. I’d like to think I didn’t outwardly show my annoyance, but I’m usually able to go with the flow
I have always been prone to outbursts of anger, so was my father and my grandfather. I've gotten way better about it, but it never really goes away. I try to remember that when you're expressing violent emotions like that, you're putting something toxic into the environment. Even though it's not you're intention, you're basically saddling someone else with your stress. And most people are already dealing with all that they can handle.
I’ve got an entire Dark Angels collection from Deathwing to Ravenwing and everything in between! I’m also starting a Horus heresy Dark Angels army in perpetration for the new HH drop!
To be honest, I have never had a problem with losing. I always see it in my head as being a story. So I take ups and downs as fortunes of war.. Plus, I can learn lessons along the way.
I can relate very much with the "handling frustration" story because all of us in my play group are highly competitive. Sometimes, that atmosphere inadvertently breeds animosity if left unchecked. My play group has had to take multiple breaks because some of us, myself included, are frustrated. We play D&D and have a 3 year old campaign. We play have a monthly magic night, and we are getting more and more into Killteam. The important part is being able to recognize when you're the jerk in the room. Humility is important to preserving friendships. Time is precious and no one wants to spend hours miserable. Being able to stand up for yourself is one thing; recognizing when it is time to back off is another. I respect the autistic person for being able to stop and consider the whole equation to better the situation. That is very considerate and is worth noting. It shows appreciation for friends and their time. Very commendable!
I deal with losing by taking on a DM like mindset. looking at the game through the lense of providing entertainment for the opponent, as well as savoring the humor crazy dice rolls provide even when it is a disaster for my army. on top of that I see my personal conduct as a personal victory, allowing myself to walk away with a sense of accomplishment
Being a slightly aspy person in my 50s, it helps to picture how you appear from outside, being a visual type. Looks bad, look at others faces, try to keep grounded. Good luck and have fun people...
Black Templars in 9th edition had a secondary called bathe the blade in the blood of your foe where one of your models challenges one of the opponents models. You get various points for killing it in diffrent ways. Don't know, just reminded me of how you like to kill the opposing warlord very fun
I've always been a narrative-driven person. Even back in school, I was always happiest when running or playing a very story-driven RPG. Warhammer is at a scale unfathomable by most other IPs. Extinction-level events are simply a Tuesday for the Imperium. Even the Eldar, a race that is purportedly on the decline (mind you we're taking info that is from the Imperial perspective), still has vast resources that would far outstrip races from other sci-fi universes. Your 2000 point game is a tiny spec of dust in the larger battle. Think about all the Horus Heresy novels where it describes thousands....millions...of Marines making planetfall. What happens in your game really does not matter in the larger scope of things.
The background is so badly done...overlay lots of the maps..imperium/ork/eldar and no one has any territory !...and the gash going across the galaxy meant nothing to peoples games
my contact with "autistic people" was that all of those simply did not like unexpected changes, and liked to complete thing they planned. If you are a friend / colleague to an artistic person I find it productive to keep that in mind: I am on time, and I spare them changing my mind. Also if something is not "sure" it is good to tell them that "I am not sure if we make it to the train station on time, if that is the case we will wait for another train". This helps very very much, as the other person does not "plan" to take a particular train. Of course this is suited to people I know.
I'm convinced that the reason that greasy neckbeard bullies new kids is because the regulars flat out refuse to interact with him and it's the only way he can possibly get any games.
Here are some observations I have being involved in this hobby: The guys that won't play UNTIL he gets his 2k point painted. These types have yet to play their first game but they are going to start at the big kids table with a fully painted army. I've met more that one person like this. They get frustrated, take way too long doing anything because they have no idea what they are doing and usually sell their stuff and walk away. The guy that follows the rule of cool and picks his first army and its GSC and he realizes he is in over his head very quickly into his first game as he has no clue what the point of the game is. This is about one guy in particular but I have seen it happen to other people with circumstances varying. The dude who is constantly getting his meds adjusted so you are never sure if you will get a reserved person or a dude who just injected Red Bull into his aorta or sometimes they switch between the two modes during a battle round. This is about a dude in particular but there was this one dude that had Tourette's and it wasn't bad and he handled himself really well but I guess he was self conscious about it so... yeah. The guy that jumps in to the hobby because he knows people that are into it, he gets some stuff and then gets curbed stomped because his friends are jerks.
That MMA story doesn't exactly ring true, but'eh... it was entertaining :D Even if it's the case, the guy lucked out and got more useful hobbies out of it. As fun as 40k is, it's also full of the god awful and miserable experience that is GW and a rather large portion of annoying fans both new and old. The best part is developing your own skills and creativity, then encouraging others to do the same as you make stories.
When I want to tone things down, I don't make a list and then play it badly. I limit myself while writing the list but play that list to win. For Sisters that might be something like I can only take the Palatine as my HQ. I can't use Bloody Rose or Argent Shroud Troops only No melta weapons Then I do the best I can with that and play to win. I am doing it right now actually. It will probably be an MSU list. I am torn between Valorous Heart for more durability on objectives or Our Martyred Lady for extra miracle dice when some of those small units get destroyed. I don't know if I can actually win but I am going to play to win.
As a guardplayer I never really feel upset when I loose, sure i hate rolling poorly but who doesn't. I treat losing like my guys put up a strong fight and traded blow for blow but their not alone and support is coming and that helps me personally
Hi Mr Exile. This is the first video of yours I have watched. I was directed to your channel by my brother and some friends after sharing with them my own current nightmare story. Would love to be able to share it with you. Is that done over on discord? I think you're doing great work here and have a wonderful channel. 🧙♂️
I'm autistic. My tip would be aim to lose. Pick a faction that is fun but rubbish in the meta. Go in knowing you will lose, have no expectations of winning and then if it happens it's a bonus. Play orks, play chaos demons, play something that is fun and chaotic but rubbish. You will know they are rubbish irrespective of the dice you roll. It makes everything so much more pleasant and stress free.
I have this mindset when I play Warhammer: it play it like the Red Bull Flugtag. You aren’t driving a soapbox car shaped like a school bus off of that platform expecting it to fly. You are there to drive a school bus-shaped soapbox car off of a platform. The last small 25 Power game I played consisted of a Lieutenant, 5 Intercessors, and a Repulsor. I did not expect to win, I wanted to throw an entire shooting phase out of one tank. It got blown up almost immediately, but not before I got to throw an entire shooting phase worth of dice at something!
I love the bullied young man grew up and brought justice to his bully. Reminds me of a favorite quote, “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”
To Cable and others with implulsive behaviors, especially anger, I'd say have a buddy l, a wingman (or woman if you will) that can help talk you down. I know most tabletop war games are 1 v. 1, but if you go to the store, club, or basement battle report with a buddy that can help you with your triggers, well, that's what friends do. If you don't have a friend like that yet, you'll make some when you keep playing with the same people. And it will help you get used to winning and losing, because that's life. Like Dean says, find your gaming chad bro.

I think that the stress your listener is feeling about the rules is actually a sypmtom of the incredibly complex rules, rather than autism. The need to know what is happening is fine. I try to focus on the narrative and less on the points, same as Northern I guess. Use it as w ay to tell a story. Stories are boring if we can predict them. Also only play people who want you to have fun. All the best.

This game has great potential to teach us about ourselves, hey. I found that too when losing a lot.

Felt the same way at one point. Eventually just realized it’s fun to roll some dice, drink a pint, and laugh with good friends.

Man. That anger chat really hit home for me, personally.
I feel like there's a lot of potential for other video series. Best warlord vs warlord showdowns, best personal wins, biggest hobby mistakes ect.
