Glad to hear you enjoyed Quebec City. Last December my husband and I had reservations for the Château Frontenac, however we got COVID-19 and had to cancel. Thanks for an honest assessment of this smaller cruise; I've often wondered if they were better than the large ones. I didn't find your review negative at all, just honest. We've only been on 2 cruises & I do get motion sickness (hubby doesn't). I was very germ-conscious on both cruises, large ones, and we did not get sick. Glad you are both home safe & on the mend.

Thanks again guys for a great video! We used to cruise in the 90s and then in 1995 I got norovirus on a cruise. I have never been so sick in my life. Swore off cruises but did one last one in 2007 to Alaska which was great but vowed it to be my last. My wife and I are finally traveling international again after 3 years and going to Ireland next week. We started looking at European River cruises for 2024 but the expense is insane. Your video here affirms how expensive cruising is and with you two both getting sick within days, that's enough for me to say never again. Glad you're both on the mend!

To be honest, I've never been on a cruise and your experience enforces my thought of never going on one. I got sick in a long overseas flight recently by sitting next to a coughing person, no masks for most. Was anyone wearing a mask? Too bad that happened but sounds like you made the best of it. Thanks for your honesty.

So sorry to learn that you both became ill. Thank you for your feedback on the small boat cruise. I appreciate the objectivity that you provided. By the way, I was surprised that your crew didn't inform you of the Port Tours, considering that there were so few passengers on board. Traveling on a small ship would imply better personalized services and advice.

Hi Tina and Norm - So sorry to hear that you got sick on your cruise, and I agree people should stay home if they feel the least bit sick instead of infecting everyone around them 😡, anyway despite that glad that you enjoyed it, sounds like it was quite relaxing though, sometimes it’s nice to just have minimal entertainment to just relax and enjoy the surroundings. That’s a real bummer to get the Covid-19 on a cruise. We were on a Baltic cruise in August and I agree that cruise operators don’t give a ……,., you know what I mean. Because they don’t check passengers at check in. They lost so much revenue for 2 years so they will not refuse or have a coughing person tested prior or during a cruise. You would figure that at almost $10K CAD they would try to protect their customers.

I'm so sorry to hear that you also got Covid on your cruise even though you went on a smaller ship. Even after I no longer tested positive for covid had had a lingering cough for about 3 to 4 weeks after. Your story about the people coughing around you brings back memories of our cruise. We also had felt let down by our cruise line after spening all that money as at times we were too ill to enjoy the food and amenities on board. It sounds like your itinary was similar to ours' as we also stopped in Qaqortoq as well as Isfjordur and Akureyri but we sailed out of Newark to Iceland. The Prince Christian Sound journey was interesting so hope you had a chance to see that as well. We were on a larger ship - the Celebrity Summit which holds about 2800 passengers. Friends of ours' like sailing with Viking which sounds about the size of ship that you are looking to travel on.

Oh my goodness that’s terrible for you guys 😢. We have been on these small cruise lines many times pre-Covid and feel the same way. They just are not the activities that we would like to do on board and very limited menu. We prefer to go on the premium cruise lines that are bigger and offer more choices for entertainment, and dining. We are going on a 14 day cruise next May with Holland America to the British Isles and I think we will like you guys take some Covid tests and medication with us in case. How long were you sick? Were you still able to do some of the tours at your ports? I’m glad you’re feeling better.

Thanks guys much appreciated. So sorry you got sick. That was our fear about cruising. Prior to Covid we loved to cruise. We finally bit the bullet and took a 12 day cruise on Carnival Pride to Iceland in August. Covid did not cross our minds until day 17, the last day of our trip. We felt a little under the weather on the way home. We tested negative after a day so but tested positive around the third day home. I think it’s rampant on every ship now but no one seems to bring it up anymore. Prior to departing Mid August it was as if Covid was a thing of the past.
Even my 84 year old mom caught it for the first time about a week after we got home and she lives 672 km from us. She got very sick but is on the mend since we arrived to visit her last week.

So sorry to hear about your illness. I hope you both are doing better now! Have you guys tried loading up on antioxidants before/during travel? I don't travel much because I'm still working full time, but whenever I do I always take double doses of vitamin C, vitamin D, Zinc and B Complex for a few days before departing and throughout the trip. It works like a charm for me. Also, I work in a hospital, ground zero for covid-19, and I take all of these supplements regularly. I have never had covid which is hard even for me to believe given my work environment. I really am convinced that these simple over the counter supplements are very effective at protecting me from the virus and illness in general.

it's still hit and miss though. We have friends who have been on three cruises this year. First they caught nothing. Second they both caught covid towards the end. One had already had covid last year, but not her husband. Third cruise, end of August this year, they went with another couple and none of them got covid despite long haul (24 hour) flights either side of the cruise. All four have had covid before, two recently and two over a year ago.

I really enjoyed this so-honest video. I was worried at first that it might be just a commercial after a freebie holiday - but that certainly wasn't the case. It was very well balanced. Norm is often good for a sharp punch line in these videos. This time, for me, it came at 20:51 " I don't want to go on another cruise ship...because the other passengers are not playing the game." So true - so often when we travel, regardless of management's best efforts, so much depends on the quality of our fellow travellers. I like how it was revealed that Norm and Tina sometimes differ in their likes and dislikes. Bur, marriage is a compromise, eh ? I say this as a husband recently returned from a two-day shopping trip to Michigan. I would have preferred to stay home to clean bathrooms and scrub floors for that time, but sometimes you just have to go !

Hello Tina & Norm, I think Cruise Ships are not the only risky modes of transportation to catch COVID. We flew to Spain arrived here on 27th and I immediately started feeling sick with exactly the same symptoms as you. Extreme throat pain last night. Today, I took COVID test which came out positive. Sad, but predictable to hear of the issues with COVID on your trip. Could you please take some time to discuss at some point what would have helped to mitigate the amount of infections so the rest of us can better figure out how to handle these trips responsibly and safely?
There were several points in your video where it could have been useful to highlight the potential issues with illness that you ran into. For example, I liked your comment about people taking personal responsibility before getting on-board and using their insurance. At that point, however, you knew COVID was likely on-board with you and could have mitigated the effects on you personally. What did you know about the ship (and your room) ventilation, for example? When you started to feel predictably ill, what did you do to protect the other passengers? (By the time you showed full symptoms and were positive on the RAT test, that was likely at least four days in where you were transmitting to others).

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  Рік тому +1

Not really we didn’t think it would be on board , we researched a smaller ship thinking as there was far less people we would be safer as it was our first cruise in 4 years . We wore masks getting there , had antiseptic wipes , sanitizer everything we do at home . We booked a room with balcony that we opened the doors every day for fresh air we discuss in the movie all the other measures we did .🌺

Sad it happened to you, however great to see you did enjoy whatever you could. I think it could have happened on any current cruise ship, regardless of size, passenger capacity, or sailing area. It is like driving, you have to do the right thing but you must check on what other drivers are doing. Did you report your positive status? Most cruise lines would have provided medicine and even compensation, although you would have asked to stay in your cabin for five days. It happened to me with Celebrity.
In terms of pricing, I find that extremely expensive, unless they paid for your airfare.
Don't give up on cruising Norm! Wrong attitude. Just prepare to deal with irresponsible and selfish human beings, as when you go grocery shopping 😊 I just came back from a HAL 14-day packed with people older than us...coughing like crazy! But I saw people of all ages doing the same on other cruise lines.

I think it was very selfish and inconsiderate for people to get on a cruise ship or any vacation spot knowing they are obviously not in optimal health. It ruins so many plans for people and could endanger them if the staff becomes sick.

No cruising for me - too many people and too little space. Did you mask whenever you were indoors or in a crowded area outdoors, seeing as you saw that people (staff and guests) were coughing right at the beginning? Travel is risky, but then again, who wants to continue living in a bubble? I have now booked my winter sojourn in Portugal (Jan-March) and will just continue to be careful and take lots of masks, sanitizer and test kits with me. We only live once, so sometimes we just have to take chances but do our best to be careful. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Tina and Norm, many thanks for your review. From a UK perspective everyone I know is now getting COVID. I last had it in April 2023 for the third time, each time it is milder. But what I see is people going out and mixing with others even if they have symptoms. I am old enough to have the option of a COVID vaccination, but younger people don't have that option but are still keen to carry on with their lives, thus lots of spreading the disease at the moment in the UK. We got Covid on our last cruise, but the version of Covid active worldwide is very mild. I had light cold symptoms and my wife was non-symptomatic. Everyone says Covid is here to stay and we need to Learn to live with it. This is true.

We still think cruising is a great way to see a lot on a budget, we do love the concept, but the risk is getting sick, even with that we had a great time.

I've only been on one cruise, and it was to Alaska, and we had 12 foot swells, and at least half of us were sick. The things you wear on your wrist helped me. I also caught Covid. This was September 2021. There were tons of precautions being taken against the virus, but it didnt matter. So i just dont think it was the fault of the ship. Sorry you got sick, tho!

Good Day, Your sharing is interesting and helpful . It is a very good overview of the cruise experience. We have not cruised. Did anyone wear masks? Also, given you were sick did you miss out on sights and port excursions? Did the ship make an announcement that there was Covid-19 on the ship? We are most pleased you are safely home. Again, thank you for sharing.

Sorry to hear you were so sick on the cruise. As mentioned before (previous videos) I am not too crazy about cruises. Give land and I will be a happy puppy! I do agree with Norm. The only trip I took (my arm was twisted ) was over ten years ago in one of the Disney's cruise ship that left cape Canaveral to some Islands near Florida. The food was delicious and plenty. No restrictions on what to eat. Our dinner partners were cattle ranchers from Montana so the husband would have two steak dinners per night. The ship was extremely clean as you would see the cleaning crew all day doing what they do best. The swimming pool was great with party every night with fireworks over the water. The only thing that was unusual was that there were too many children. Which is expected. I am happy that you are feeling better. Double Cheers. 🍷🍷

Tina & Norm, WOW! If you want my advice that was a pretty expensive ticket to go on a cruise & to catch COVID & get stuck in your room the whole time. 😮 From now on always carry on your trips lots of Vit C, Vit D, zinc, & hydro sense, & whatever else you want to add. I hope you both are feeling much better now. As for a cough, hot lemon & lots of honey. And wear your mask while you are traveling & wash youe hands. Sounds like the cruise ship was lacking in their house cleaning. Norm is right. No more cruises. That was a lot of money to get sick. 😥😥😥

Intersting. We are back from 10 day Alaska Sept 16-26, 2023 Majestic Princess. We got Covid about day 4/5 into our 10 day. We were 3500 passengers. So we think we got it on board. Like you many were coughing, hacking during first few days. The food on board was good but the covid thing has ruinned it. We are still positibe 7-8 days after first. Home now. Been thinking smaller cruise line ship next IF we cruise again like Oceania or HAL. Well see. Like you guys went all Covid with nothing. Go figure we get it on a cruise ship & Princess nontheless. They are bsically ignoring it now is my feeling. Love the video's.

We aren't widely experienced travellers so choose our trips really carefully. I had thought about doing a similar cruise to this one but after reading about your experience, I'm so glad we didn't book one for this autumn. Big bucks for the Canadian dollar only to get Covid? I wondered about the lack of testing for people boarding, and also about those contaminated folks taking the virus into communities in Greenland and Iceland--did the ship not impose a quarantine for them so they didn't pass along the infection at various ports? Once again, we've enjoyed your thoughtful and even-handed analysis of your experience. We'll carry on with downsizing and purging for now, your other videos we follow and enjoy!

You’re very calm about this experience and it’s a situation where you really were thoughtful about the post Covid realities . I think unfortunately despite the real risks to health existing out there many people have written off any caution. In fact we have to protect ourselves because avoiding inconvenience and denial are behaviors a lot of people are going to exhibit during travel.
