Just looked up exchange for 2.1 million kroner to USD = $193,019.40. Is this about right? That seems like a great price for the size and phenominal view on a Island with limited homes for sale. She was smart to buy & own VS renting.

@@jansmith3158 Remove your question Jan, unless you do not trust your computer. :)
Owning is usually smarter than renting, and a "gold star" to Cecilia for suggesting the purchase to her friend. 2nd gold star (what teachers would affix to test papers) for buying the bungalo as a year-round house.
I am curious how the town council is to deal with, but I like they have the 6-month residency requirement so as to prevent outside speculators from flipping properties
Which leads me to ponder if she who is loved by so many of us started selling shares in an investment firm, the corporation could buy those fire damaged properties and begin an empire.

Thank you, Linn, for allowing Cecilia to show us your beautiful home. Your apartment is actually larger than mine & I live in the states (Oregon). I have found I don't need a lot of space now that my boys are grown, so I sold my house & downsized & am currently looking at building a tiny house because rent in my area is skyrocketing! A one bedroom rents for at least $1,700 per month & it continues to climb. A 14.6% increase has been approved for this year (& we wonder why we have a homeless crisis, ugh). Anyway, I love how bright & cozy your home is & your view is absolutely amazing!! Thank you, Cecilia, for showing us this beautiful property. That view of the rural seaside, crashing waves with snowy weather to boot is just ideal! Since I was born and raised through my childhood during nonstop monsoons, I detest and resent the sunlight/sunshine always, and only feel rainy/snowy weather is “good weather.”
As a native Floridian, where if not the heat, the monsoons and hurricanes, along with any variety of deadly apex predator wildlife is not all that different than Svalbard.
Still, it’s nowhere near as polluted dirty or depressing as America’s supposedly “livable northern cities.”

I have a 34 year old daughter, Alicia, who used to live in FL, and to say it got hot down there is an understatement, and after first vowing never to return to Indiana, she finally did. Two reasons why; first she missed the old man 🤣 and being near family, and second, she missed the change in seasons. She was so excited the other day. I lived as a child and young adult in the Canadian sub Arctic. Halloween had snowbanks. Really miss the snow living in southern Canada. We mostly have freezing rain in Winter and rarely have a proper snowstorm in southern Canada.. The advantage of the sub-Arctic is that there is some daylight in Winter and night in Summer. The tundra was as beautiful as you depict it, as were the Northern lights. Thank you for sharing your life in Longyearbyen, as it brings back beautiful memories of my childhood and early adulthood.

I can not tell you how truly AMAZING your videos have been to me since I started watching you YESTERDAY! 😃 I live in the US in West Virginia to be exact. We have all 4 Seasons here and every since growing up here I have simply hated the Winter months with a passion. So much in fact that as soon as I graduate from school I took off to a florida to further my education and made that my home for many many years. After I married we ended back in WV so that our daughter would grow up around her grandparents. My husband LOVES the mountains and me…well I miss Florida and the sub tropic warmth everyday.
We are in Fall now and Winter is approaching quickly so I have really been dreading it. That is until (meeting you Cecilia) 😊 I have been watching your channel and to see how much passion and appreciation you have to see the natural beauty in your extremely cold climate has opened my eyes to what I have been failing to see in mine! Granted our homes are certainly worlds apart and different but your open heart and sweetness has touched my heart and helped me open my mind to see the beauty that I have been missing around me❤️
THANK YOU for your love of life 🥰🤗 I will be watching! Much love to you and your family and of course the fluffiest member Grim 🐕

I pay more for a shitty old apartment with horrible neighbors in the Los Angeles area. I would totally live in that apartment. It's cheaper, might actually be bigger than mine, has better amenities with the laundry room and a storage room. And that view 😍
When you posted about the apartments fire on Instagram I was immediately worried if the residents would find another place since like you said, there aren't many places available.
I like that rule about needing to be a resident for 6 months before being allowed to purchase property. It sounds like a good way to prevent investors from buying up too many properties and turning them into vacation rentals. It helps guarantee housing for locals. Plus you can decide if it's truly somewhere you can live to be worth it to buy an apartment.

I'm watching from Wellington, FL. 3 and a half hours North of Key West. One hour North of Miami. I am in shorts, flip flops, and a tshirt because that is the uniform 11 months of the year. Course, we break out the jeans and a sweater for those "rough" winter days where it dips to a balmy 70 degrees F. Every now and then we get down to almost freezing, but it's rare and usually we break some old weather record from the 1930's.
I grew up outside Boston, MA so I am familiar with long, cold, dark winters but once I moved to S Florida there was no going back. I like being able to take a shower and get dressed and go. No worries about my hair snapping off in the cold. No worries about catching pneumonia. It's bot uncommon to see women shopping in a grocery store holding an infant dressed in a diaper only. Kids go barefoot until they're forced to wear shoes for school. After work you can jump in the car and be at the beach and enjoy 2 or 3 hours of sunlight, or swim in the clear blue water. A lot of people kayak as a form of exercise in addition to biking or running. Though the cities make biking and running paths a priority since the weather makes those popular activities.
The scenery there is gorgeous but knowing myself, living in a place where it stays dark for entire months would make it nearly impossible for me to get out of bed. As soon as my brain realized it's cold and dreary it would fight me to return to sleep. I would certainly be fired from any job for calling in sick so I could sleep! Also, getting dressed in multiple layers and strapping on a pair of heavy boots that need to be removed everytime you step into a building seems like a lot of effort. I have been spoiled by the pleasant weather and the laid back attitude of living in the deep South. I can't fathom not being able to jump in my car and taking in a weekend in Key West snorkeling and reading on a deserted sandbar then going to sleep with the sliding glass door open so I can hear the tiny waves breaking on the shoreline as I drift off to the sounds of grasshoppers chirping and alligators making alligator noises. lol

In the UK we call this ground rent, and it's for any kind of property where you don't own the land or the entire building, so like flats or apartments and any common useages such as a communal garden or washing line/washing machine etc. Even the lights and cleanliness of the hallway and stairs outside the apartment. Anything that you essentially share with others. It could also include parking as well depending on location.
Apartments, flats, maisonettes tend to be referred to as Leasehold because you are leasing all these commonly used areas whereas a normal house is called a freehold. In theory you could own the entire building that the flat is in but that obviously costs more.

Hi Cecilia! Love the tour of Linn’s apartment. While others might not find it interesting, I know you have done previous videos touching on it, but I would love to see more of the amenities and shops that the residents use; are there hair salons/barber shops? Are there any nail salons or estheticians in shops or are these businesses run out of people’s homes? I would also love to see a more in depth tour of town, from a locals perspective - all of the various little shops, and little places that locals like to eat and drink.

Comunque seguirò i tuoi video molto interessanti.
    Grazie e buon lavoro.

Thank you Cecilia for that awesome tour of Linn's apartment. It's quite beautiful.🏤I loved how Grim was smiling at you when you come home.🥰 We love us some Grime.💞🦮 Your nail polish is 🔥!! Looking forward to going into the polar nights and the holidays with you guys via video. Longyearbyen is now my #1 bucket list destination one day. In my mind's eye, I imagine Christmas time would be a blast!!. The polar nights by cozy fires (inside and outside), all of the snow, going snowmobiling, the activities in the village, trying all the different types of cuisines, the lights and decorations, the...and of course, maybe a chance to meet you guys and Grime. Possibly treating you and Christoph to drinks and/or dinner, if you'd be down with that. I've watched and throughly enjoyed so many of your videos, I feel like I already know you. You're my friend in my head..lol 🤯Any way, let me get back to my current reality. 😄Thanks again for all of the great vlogs, and as always, stay blessed. 🙏💞

Here in Minnesota, we have had a very cool and wet summer. Our fall has been abnormally cool for this time of year too. And Hurricane Ian just hit Florida a few days ago. My guess is even with being on the other side of the world you are being effected. But how beautiful!

Very interesting, thanks for sharing! The cost isn't too bad. It's a little hard to compare here in the U.S. because apartment/condo prices vary so much from city to city and neighborhood to neighborhood. We live in urban Texas and currently pay $1,800/month (rent) for a 2bd2ba in a nice neighborhood roughly 20min away from downtown.

    • @Shadeadder
      @Shadeadder 2 роки тому

I think that depends entirely on where you live in Austin? We live 20min from downtown to the northwest, in a quite nice 2bd2ba (1100sqf), and her quote for a similarly sized apartment was comparable to what we pay: $1800/mo rent, $40/mo electric.

I read Apartment and thought 2.1 million is 175 000 NOK a month in rent, that is just crazy. Then watching your video I realized it is not an apartment but a Condo (Condominium). 10 0000 a quarter is still quite some money for upkeep if you own the apartment but then many things are more expensive in Svalbard. Thank you for a nice video.
    Apartment - Rent
    Condominium - Own

That's not a bad deal on utilities. Here in the United States in my house (4000 square feet) I pay $0.112 cents per kilowatt hour; averaging around $192 dollars per month. Plus an average of $90 per month in water. Just for me. $77 per month in internet. $200 quarterly in homeowners association. $2000 per year in homeowners insurance. $3100 a year in property taxes paid to the local government for pretty much nothing and a deplorable quality of life in this city.

I especially find it interesting that no one locks anything up in Lokgyearbyen. As you know, here in the States, we live like a fortress. It's sometimes depressing. Love Linn's apartment ~ it's definitely charming & SUCH a great price!

Depends on where you live in the states, a cleaner friend of mine from Poland was just saying to me the other day she's amazed by how things here in the US aren't locked "very trusting" or have keys just under the mat. When I lived in WV no one locked anything, because in rural areas there's no need, cities like NY, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, or Chicago are totally different stories, esp nowadays. 😘

Snowed at my house in Central Florida twice in the middle of May of 2020, even though if I hadn’t been a smoker then, I wouldn’t have noticed it since they were just gentle flurries and it was also during a weird period that lasted through the summer of “micro-cold fronts,” that seemed to come and go as quick as just a few minutes, or more likely, hours.
Rains are the only good weather IMO, even though snow takes better photographs.
