  • Title: Understanding the Causes of Lipedema
    URL: lipedema-university.lipedemapr...
Intro: The problem with genetic work is that you have to have, ideally, families, where you've got some family members clearly affected and some family members clearly not affected. And then you can use the DNA from the entire family, and work through and find out what happened, and what genetic abnormalities you can find in those that are affected versus the non-affected.

In summer I was hit by a car and for a month after I felt AMAZING. I spent the night in the hospital (only facial injury). They gave me a saline drip, a dye for an ECG, and a blood thinner.
For one month after the accident, I had no swelling and my Lipo pain was gone, even my hip and back pain was better. Please consider that for further research. I am available for more details.

You might be on to something. I've always limited my salt until 5 months ago. I started the carnivore diet (plenty of salt involved). I lost 15 lbs Id say 10lbs of lipo fat. I never thought that was possible and I've tried everything. I have some way to go but Im sticking with it.

Cushing's disease I had for 8 years seems to be what brought Lipedema in. I had to have my pituitary removed in the 2nd surgery so a few of my hormones were ripped out and then I started on medication to replace those hormones.

Pretty sure I have this condition in my arms, I’m only 27 but I feel peas under my fat, and have issues with lots of blood vessel issues already. The hardest is that I’m a healthy weight, however my arms seem to hold onto weight. My mother has arms smaller than mine and she is over 30 lbs heavier.

Check and Cohen who described oedema that resolved with recumbancy, and a number of other conditions that resolved/ improved with administration of dextro-amphetamine, who suggested the possibility of sympathetic nervous system deficit- Wondering as I listen to this if some aspect of capillary “leakiness” as suggested by these authors could be at work in this condition. Interesting to try the fluid challenge test they describe.

THIS is important!!! I've had issues since 18. I later regularly used to use amphetamines and my legs improved a lot... But I didn't actually lose weight during this time (oddly I actually gained weight at this period). I then got sober and list weight and my legs looked worse than ever... Then I got diagnosed with ADHD this year and started to take lisdexamfetamine (which is dextroamphetamine) and my legs have improved when I take it :-/

Its the hormones that cause this. Foe some reason the fat cells behave dufferently. This happens to mostly women. Also mostly after a hormonal change like your first menstrual cycle, every fee years your hormones change a bit so ir could occur then, your first pregnancy.

My mom was thin. But if I look at my paternal aunt and grandmother they had the typical look of thicker arms and legs. Later they developed a larger trunk after childbirth. Could hardly walk in their 80’s due to edema and pain. I’m heading that way at only 50. Never understood why I had a small upper body compared to my hips and legs at 12. After child birth my trunk started growing. It’s very disheartening to diet and diet and still not lose anything in the midsection, arms and upper thighs. I’m trying again with a low carb diet to see if it will help. My feet and legs are in so much pain. And I have developed venous insufficiency. Not to mention I’ve had knee pain since I was 15 and now it’s much worse.

From researching this online, and looking at the different stages of lipedema, it seems like stage 1 which is quite mild, seems to be attributed to basically anyone who is pear-shaped. So I'd love to know if everyone who is pear shaped has lipedema?? And will it always get worse and end up looking like the last stages?

    • @L_Martin

This is what I want to know too. But I suppose unless pear-shaped people have pain, tenderness + they bruise easily on the legs (symptoms that seem to go hand in hand with lipedema) 06:29 as he says here... without those symptoms, pear shaped women don’t have lipedema, it’s just their natural body shape / how they store fat. That’s my guess.

It runs in my family. Most women on my moms side have lipo-lymphedema(because they wait to long to seek treatment). I have never had a weight problem but just within the past 4 months my legs and hips and upper arms have gained an excessive amount of weight. My legs are like 80% stretch marks And it is devastating because I was just starting to feel confident in myself and now I can only wear pants because my legs are almost completely covered in stretch marks. I’ve tried going to the doctor to get it confirmed as lipedema but I’m apparently not fat enough for anyone to take me seriously.

WOW! OR call me crazy- you could adopt healthy daily habits to keep it in check. Spend time learning about this disease together with your daughter and then fight it together. Learn new habits and help hold each other accountable. If she has lipedema, it will only get worse unless lifestyles are changed.
Lipedema doesn't have to reach the later stages- and lipedema doesn't equal obesity. You can be a relatively fit person and live life with this disease.
Lipedema hit me when I was 12 as well. I'm 36 now and just found out about Lipedema this year. This discovery gave me the answers to all the questions I had when I was young. Like why are my knees so fat? 😂 Had I been armed with this information then? Gosh, I could've avoided years of agony and yoyo dieting.
With a healthy diet and daily movement, I'm keeping this under control. It's possible, but you can't keep the same habits and expect it not to flare up and get worse.
I had a terrible diet growing up and I blame the lack of education around what constituted a healthy diet for my struggles. I was 190lbs at 25yo before I woke up and changed my life. I now focus on eating whole foods, no more processed junk. I move my body daily- some days just on dog walks around the neighborhood. With all this, I've been able to maintain around 140lbs for the past 10+ years, even with lipedema. It's not a death sentence. And honestly, if you keep it in check at a young age you end up with the current "ideal body type" I have a 27in waist and 41in hips🙃😆
So yea, if you're reading this- don't give up! And don't let this disease stop you from living life the way you want, whether that's having kids or not.

People in the past didn't experience these conditions... So, i personally suspect it has something to do with genetically modified food .. and processed food. Food industries are playing experiments on us to make us addicted to their products, and thus are making us sick in ways we haven't known before.
      What can you do ?
You can control things by controlling your family food intake...
      - Zero tolerance to fast food / processed food ..
      - Zero / minimum food from restaurants..
      - All food is to be cooked at home, from organic fresh ingredients..

Please look at childhood diet (because if a mother has a sugar and salt addiction, like mine did, they will pass that onto their daughters). Affectively, some women give too many toxins to their babies and children...my Mum ate a lot of crap while she was pregnant, despite being slim). She has chunky blobby thighs and so do I and my sisters.
I think the toxins are floating around from a young age and hormonal changes cause the lipo fat to start gathering and causing problems.
Most of us were slim children (but may have had slightly larger thighs and bums/tums because we ate too much sugar and/or salty food).
Canned foods, salt added to meals, food colourings and flavourings were all the norm many years ago...

I've weighed as little as 8 and 1/2 stone and this point my face stated to waste away and I exercised and still my legs didn't change much at all! I had a 25" inch stomach and my ribs and collar bones stuck out and I looked very thin on top... But my legs barely lost an inch off my thighs. Size 6 on top and a 12 on bottom :-(
I am so upset that my lower half has caused me so much self esteem issues and eating disorders in the past trying to deal with this.

Dominick Tekos Girl, yes. Same. In high school I used to sob and whip my thighs with a metal coat hanger I was absolutely overwhelmed with despair. I would only eat a slice of bread a day. If I was weak and ate anything else I would go make myself throw it up...which was another trauma because I'm terrified of vomit/vomiting. I hated them so much I wanted to die.

I wish I could afford Art Lipo lipo for my cankles. They’re the only treatment option that seems to work.

This condition is resistent to diet, so, unfortunately, that doesn't work.

A healthier diet & exercise can slow the progression of this disease, so you cant negate the importance of that by saying its resistent to diet. If you've already progressed to the later stages, sure diet won't be as effective but for those of us still in early stages, we can slow the growth. I'm 36, have had this since I was 12 and have stayed in the early stages through a healthy lifestyle. I truly believe a low inflammatory diet is best, so avoiding processed food works well for me. Seed oils, high fructose corn syrup, etc are in everything out there. These are incredibly inflammatory. Inflammation can lead to excess pain. Continuously eating inflammatory foods will cause your lipedema to flare up and grow. Most of us will not end up stage 4 if we follow a healthy lifestyle, that happens after years of continuous abuse to your body. 🙃🤷‍♀️

I'd go as far as saying this is a working class condition due to a lifetime of eating cheap, low quality food and the parents not having the knowledge or inclination to feed their children high quality meat and organic vegetables.

What a waste of time and money, researching this. You will NEVER see an athlete or a subsistence farmer with this problem. It's entirely a result of lack of movement. The lymphatic system is the same as the endocrine system, all REGULATED by exercise. When that regulating influence is lost, both systems become extremely sluggish. There are no genetics involved. Any assumed "heredity" is actually just learnt behaviour. Sedentary parents very often raise sedentary children.

Not true. I heavy weight train 5 days a week. I have a muscular build which is quite defined on my upper body but the lipedema covers my leg muscles. I squat 410 lbs on my bowflex.
