How to Declutter Your Mind

  • Minimalism has been a great tool to rid ourselves of life's excess physically, but what are the proven ways to do this mentally? This video shows you how.
    Minimalism is a tool that can assist you in finding freedom. Freedom from fear. Freedom from worry. Freedom from overwhelm. Freedom from guilt. Freedom from depression. Freedom from the trappings of the consumer culture we’ve built our lives around. Real freedom.
    Given all of the recent reports of alarming trends of increasing depression rates, feelings of disconnectedness, disengagement and ballooning levels of stress, many people have turned to a tool called "minimalism" as a way to live more with less and to find some relief.
    Minimalism has been defined as a tool to rid yourself of life’s excess in favor of focusing on what’s important - so you can find happiness, fulfillment and freedom.
    The act of living minimally has shown to eliminate discontent, reclaim time, live in the moment and rid our physical spaces of excess stuff.
    While we have made strides and bounds to rethink our physical spaces through this process by identifying objects are not fulfilling our needs with the tool of minimalism, we have yet to evolve our approach to thoughts that are unneeded in our minds.
    Most are unaware that these thoughts and a lack of understanding of the mechanics of the mind is the true source of this underlying discontent, suffering and emptiness many of us feel.
    While we can simply remove, sell off or throw away physical objects that don't add value to our lives, the problem lies in trying to do the same with the thoughts that add no value in our minds. Where do you throw them?
    The reality is, you can't stop those from coming into your mind and this is where we're often stuck as humans.
    This predicament why the time is now to evolve our look at minimalism to an even more intentional approach to a philosophy called mental minimalism.
    In this video you will learn the definition of mental minimalism and three proven mental templates that will immediately reduce mental clutter, ditch the drama and add clarity to your life.
    This clarity will lead to action that can change your life.
    So bring your mind, as messy as it seems.
    Mental minimalism reveals the peace, happiness, innovation, creativity and fulfillment that is always available to us, once the drama is gone.

    I love how you just built a bridge between minimalism and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The first two techniques from a CBT standpoint are basically questioning our cognitive distortions which are thoughts we have that may or may not be true. In CBT you learn to identify these thoughts and then collect evidence such as you describe to test whether the thought is an accurate reflection of reality. I never thought of this as mental decluttering before, but I can see now how it can be!

    • @AlexMDorr
      @AlexMDorr  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you for that feedback. I think a ton about this because the main work I do is leadership training with leaders in corporate organizations and we introduce these tools to give basically a 1.0 of CBT so you know how much your ego is playing you at work. You just hit on essentially what I was trying to take a chance at. I know it was a stretch, but I feel like it is a helpful data point on the trend of minimalism that is out there. Thank you for your perspective and additional insights. Would love to hear more of your thoughts and ideas as you have more reflections! All the best.

      It is such a part of our human condition that we have to continually wake up to - myself included! It may always happen for us, but the more we can catch it the happier we can be.
      Haha glad you caught on to that! After 5 years doing all I can to study under her and immerse myself in the philosophy, I was bound to catch on to some of the cadence, story-telling flow and mannerisms that have led to her success. I am fascinated with the old apprenticeship models where if you wanted to learn from them, be around them as much as you can and play the fly on the wall. Surround yourself with the greats, but don't take too much of their time. Watch them in their natural environment and add your own style to it. Success leaves clues and don't try to reinvent the wheel. Thanks for being a big fan and for learning with us!

    216th subscriber here, it's 4:30 AM, up so early due to broken sleep and a massive headache. I'm 29, constantly bugged by the thought of finishing about 45% of life, and not having accomplished much. I do have a stable job but I need to excel and switch careers ASAP. Reasons being saturation and insecurity; due to which I had to start by closing Facebook and Instagram. I've also taken a step towards the goal but due to the need to work towards it alongside a full-time job and personal commitments, the past one year has been awfully stressful. This has resulted in my inability to focus either at life or at working towards the career switch goal, leaving me worried. It has also resulted in being impatient, lacking tolerance and screwing personal relations with colleagues and friends. I want you to help me in this situation by making more videos on mental health being affected due to mind and life clutter. I may not be the only one, many more might need help on this. TIA

    I wish I had seen this in my prior job where I was stressed and frustrated all the time due to my own mind games. My favorite tool would be the "Edit your story". Doesn't take much effort to see through the clutter once you take the time to work it out.

      I appreciate you sharing and best part is that the timing is always perfect to learn these lessons. Sounds like you got it now and can quickly rise above those untrue stories that hold us back. So well said about seeing through the clutter as this becomes a mental process you can use without actually having to write it down once you have practiced it enough.

My ego didn't want to cross out anything in the MEANS THAT column because it was such an engrained judgment or story. Give yourself grace and keep reflecting on it. One question that always helps me sort though this is to ask myself, "If I passed this to someone next to me, would they agree that what is written is completely true?" With that though experiment I am usually able to cross out a few additional judgments and stories. Maybe that helps! You got it and let me know how it goes.

      So well said Chris! Also, most people tell me, "How can I have 20 minutes per day to sit down, write out a whole story and then cross out what I don't know to be true? I am just too busy." What they don't realize is that after doing 3-4 of these, you start to get the magic trick and then you are able to do the Edit Your Story as a mental process to get back on track quicker. You may eventually run into a situation that has you so frustrated you have to go back to writing it down, but those become fewer and far between. Thanks for watching!

The other resource I recommend (although not for the faint of hearted) is The Work by Byron Katie. When I had re-occuring past events that caused me guilt, fear, stress, anxiety or suffering I always turn to her worksheets and four questions to help me understand that thinking so it doesn't continue to throw me off track. When I am really struggling with something her work is my way out. Hope that helps and enjoy that journey to freedom if you so choose to start doing the work and sitting in inquiry! Hey man . Love the video . Hmm I'm a 12th grade student and my mind is completely cluttered . Whenever I try to study , it feels like my mind is full and nothing ever goes to my head and then I get tensed and worried because of this clutter . One day I was watching Sherlock Holmes and he says that he keeps his mind attic with important things and the unnecessary stuff he forgets ( like cleaning the attic ) . I so wanted to do that as I feel it would help me in my studies and also that this is one year that I can't screw up . Also do you have any advice to increase my concentration levels because they've been decreasing for the last 3 years . Please help

    • @AlexMDorr
      @AlexMDorr  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching Aaron. I remember those days and can't even imagine how much extra is on your mind with all that is going on in the world now. Hang in there. Love that Sherlock Holmes quote and I completely agree.
      There are some different levels of this I would encourage you to look at. As far as study tips and retaining information, I am not necessarily an expert in that. I have loved Jim Kwik for memory content if you haven't found his work. There are a ton of others who have study tips.
      What I can help you with is the part where you mentioned the stressful thoughts - "nothing ever goes to my head" and "I get tensed and worried."
      What I would tell you is that the feeling of being tense or worried is first caused by your thinking and more specifically the stressful (untrue) thoughts that you are believing in that moment.
      For example when I was feeling tense and stressed, the thoughts that I was most likely believing that caused those feelings were, "My parents will be upset if I don't get good grades. I will not get into college if I have a bad 12th grade year. I am not smart enough. Everyone else gets this and I don't."
      What I would do is look at each of these individually and question them with the THIS means THAT tool. This helps me slow down my mind and notice the events that are happening "I got a 70% on this one math test." and how my mind then adds in "and my parents are going to be disappointed and a few more tests like that and I won't get into the college I want and this means that I'm stupid..." When I question all of those additional thoughts with a, "CAN I ABSOLUTELY KNOW EACH OF THOSE ARE TRUE?" then I realize that is my mind just making up stories and this is the cause of my stress and extra clutter.
      I just notice that and eventually it makes me smile because I am aware of it and notice. From that clarity, you just take it one day at a time and mentally ask yourself, "Given that I got a 70% on that test and this subject and my goal is to get better grades - what can I do next to improve it?" When I am able to get clear and reduce the ADDED STRESS - there are solutions and ways for me to improve moving forward from that wisdom. This is all you can do and you just follow this process. The more you explore where the EXTRA STRESS is coming from with your thinking WHILE ALSO LEARNING FROM someone like Jim Kwik to help with your memory - the closer you will get to what you are looking for.
      I hope this helps a bit. Please let me know what other video topics you'd love to hear about! - Alex

    What about if some of your fears are things that people have expressed to you at one point, so you know they feel that way and you’re not just imagining it?

    • @AlexMDorr
      @AlexMDorr  2 роки тому

      Great question here. If I am reading your question right - people can share with me something that they see me as 'fearing' - but the truth is I can choose whether I believe what they are saying or not. So it is not important whether you are imagining it or not - editing your story helps you get down to the facts of what the reality is, while watching for the story/judgments/assignments of motive you are adding on to the facts. These addition are usually what leads to fear because they focus on if THIS happens it automatically MEANS THAT. We can't know the future of how an event may play out, but the ego often assigns negativity to how it will play out.
      Lastly, if there is something that after reflecting, I still have fear around - it is usually down to three areas I need to focus on - 1) am I lacking the skillset needed to handle that situation? 2) Am I using an old or less than modern approach to handling that challenge or 3) Am I lacking willingness to learn more, educate myself or go in to key conversations with vulnerability and willingness to not know all of the answers before I get started?
      Reflecting on those 3 places after editing my story about the situation always leads to a ton of relief and helps me rise above fear I may be having. Hope that helps and that I didn't miss the question you were asking!

      Such a simple, yet powerful tool. I teach this for a living now and I still screw it up, but only daily.

    I think the first tool, Edit Your Story, would have the most value for me, as I can see how it really cuts through the mental "crap." And I know I do this, create this whole ridiculous fictional story. Looking forward to giving this a whirl. Thanks.

      Haha so well said Becky! Let me know how it goes as you try it out. I have found that it only takes a few times to go through the tool completely to be able to recognize quicker when you are into the story and away from the facts. Thanks for watching and good luck!

    How do you focus with all that wood around you?

      Haha I've been waiting for that question for quite some time! It actually looks more extreme than it is. The real question is, do you think the flooring is wood as well? ;)

    What... what are yo doing with your hands?
    Are those like physical queues to make sure your inflections are being done properly?
    Is it a hypnosis thing?

      It's what ever you need it to be man! Working on using them less. This was one of my first videos where I really wanted to nail a script so there are more cuts than I would traditionally have on a presentation. Hoping to find the balance in future videos. Any of the tools helpful for you?

      @@AlexMDorr Honestly I think I was way more invested in your presentation than the content (which is a me problem). I’m trying to get better at engaging with the camera and the punctuation of hand gestures is something I always find an interesting addition to any speech or conversational engagement.
      The type of decluttering my mind that I usually tend to need isn’t really along the spiralling anxiety line, which seems to be the main concern in the video. My mind needs a way to somehow quell the addiction it has to following idle thoughts instead of going to bed.
      Or to make it less pretentious: I got a daydreaming problem at night, and I’ve no idea how to quiet it down.
      Only consolation really has been having the forethought to recognize when I’m in too deep to discontinue it, so I might as well right ‘er down.

      @@thepretentiousgentleman Gotcha - that is definitely important and good feedback. In the future, I don't want my hand gestures or presentation to take away from the clarity of the message for sure.
      That is such a tough problem - especially in this day and age. Toning down the thoughts to settle into going to bed. Some of the daily practice of what I brought up in this video will teach you about how your mind works to notice those thoughts running more often. I have found more consistent meditation practice has helped me with some of this. It sounds so simple, but 6 months ago or so - I committed to putting the phone down at around 8pm and only allowing myself to read a book by my bed. This has drastically helped the running thoughts at night. Just suggestions! Would love to hear what works for you down the road.

      Love it! The ol' reliable for immediately reducing stress, fear and drama. From that clarity, it is easier to reengage and move into impact.
