Relatively easy project to do, it would have been nice to have it up off the ground. I decided not to wait until the 10k mark anymore and glad I did because the oil definitely needed to be changed. I will stick to 5k miles from here on out like normal. For the wiring, going through the firewall is definitely not easy so maybe sometime soon I'll tackle that again. For now I have the wires hooked up correctly. The callout event was an awesome event so if you haven't seen that video here it is!...

Brown oil just means the oils was doing its job, not that it needs to be changed

First oil change and he used 5qts of high mileage synthetic oil and the rest regular synthetic. I'm surprised there isn't more comments on that. And yeah you're supposed to drain the oil filter first and change that gasket while you have the filter off.

  • @ew4096

Ok, Toyota says to change oil at 10K. DON 'T YOU BELIEVE IT. I have a 2015 4runner, change synthetic oil every 3K miles. I don't give a shit what Toyota tells me. for $30.00 (oil/filter) I can afford to change it every 3K miles. It is cheap enough to keep your engine running for a very long time. Hey Dufus, the bottom cap was to drain the oil canister so you don't make a fucking mess.

It amazes me how your videos are suggested just as I'm thinking about said thing for my truck. (Oil, LEDs, front tiedown rail in the bed, etc). UA-cam's algorithm is too powerful!

I just called Toyota on my new Tacoma and the oil change intervals are every 10k. At 5k intervals they do a vehicle inspection and tire rotation. Same as my 2017 tundra.

That little clear tool that comes with the new filter is really useful. If you take that cap off the filter, press that tool in, it’ll drain the oil straight out of the hole of the tool. I learned the hard way

To get through the firewall there is a roughly 3/4" rubber grommet driver side just behind the brake booster. I don't have a pic handy, but it is roughly a foot up from that factory harness and to the left... You'll see it. Pretty easy to push through for basic wiring needs.

So a few things. First off the little clear tube thing that comes with the filter, you remove the center bolt on the filter and push that in. It will drain the filter and oil housing so dont have to make a big mess removing the filter like you did. 2nd, the 0w20 full synthetic can definitely last longer than 5k. it might be super thin but the clearances on the new toyota engines are very good. If you're changing it too early, its just a wash of cash.

I agree with everything you've stated with one minor augmentation. As someone that lives in a climate that goes from +30C to -30C within 6 months I highly recommend using the 8000 KM (5000 MILE) oil change interval. Cheap preventative maintenance is never a bad thing.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed

Deano well obviously this guy is a tool considering that he didn't read the instructions that comes with the new oil filter and he does mind pissing away money on buying a day of oil change filter ($7.00) oil pennzoil (cheapest oil $39.00 - 7quarts) and never checking oil in his engine in 8700 miles 6 quarts drained out =priceless

Bros FOURR Speed its the same amount either way, the plug is there for a reason. Take the fill cape off before you drain and it should help, always did with my VR6. Then again it could just be how i was told. But hey you do it your way.

It is a fuse that takes up 1 slot and keeps the original fuse, then it has an offset design and has a second fuse slot and a wire coming off it. Put whatever amp fuse you like in the new circuit. There is a good ground up there where the fusebox is mounted. Much easier and about $5.00

like your channel man but honestly if you put fresh oil in and drove your truck for 5 minutes, then drained it, it would be brown just like that. the way to tell if its going bad is the smell and if its pure black. mostly the smell though. you can tell when oil is burning and done.

A couple major things were left out of this video, should have done some research before making a "how to" that someone might try to replicate.
1 - Use the plastic drain that comes with the oil filter so you don't make a mess, but if you like messes it's up to you. Really not that important just bothered me.
2 - 6qts of oil for motor, but if you drain and change the oil filter it's 6.2
3 - oil filter canisters have a huge drawback caused by user error. When you put it back on the truck ALWAYS tighten half turn loosen quarter turn (two steps forward - one step back). If you don't the o rings have a tendency to twist and bind causing it to leak. You won't notice until it fills the skid and starts draining out the back.
There are also UA-cam how to videos on these trucks done by people who know what they are doing. Just saying

I drive 25-30k a year and will use this truck to tow a 2000lb bass boat in the spring and summer. I'm thinking a 7500 mile oil change or every 3 mons (4 times a year). Oils have improved so much over the last couple of years... 3000 mile oil change is a waste of money.

Been saving up for a Tacoma for a while now, Plan on getting a second gen or third gen? should get a second gen or save the money and spend it on a 3rd gen? Could you do a comparison on both of the trucks and which your opinion is the better choice? Keep up the Tacoma mods.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  6 років тому

Hopefully I can do a comparison one day. If you go second gen, get an older one around the $20k range. 2014/2015s honestly go for about the same price as a used 16. So if you are already planning to spend over $28k on one, stick with a 3rd gen. My brand new 17 was only $2k more than a used 16, and only like $3k more than a used 15. No regrets.

It's all preference, the 3rd gen is just more technology, the 2md gen is just want it needs to be to get things done. No advanced features inside but I'm a simple man. Off road package, your good to go.

Having owned a 95 for 13 years ,driving a friends 2nd gen a lot and now owning a 2017 pro ( manual transmission) I’d say skip 3rd gen if you want a auto. It’s hard to get ahold of the powerband with that transmission. The manual is fine though. The 2nd gen has less HP but slightly more torque. The technology / comforts of the 3rd gens are awesome. Cabin noise was drastically reduced in 3rd gens. I’d say one positive thing about the 4.0 of the 2nd gen is that you know it’s gonna last. It’s a proven engine where the 3.5 is still up in the air. My opinion

I've had a 1st gen, two 2nd gens, and a third gen. Depends on what your using it for and features you'd like to have. 3rd gen has most things (it's still a Toyota) a modern car should have. However there are drawbacks; motor has zero torque, can't see over the hood going up steep hills, and the auto transmission is awful. I'd buy a hand shaker if I were you, that's what I did. Crawl control is kind of gimmicky, if you can't drive yourself out with a rear locker and ATRAC (off road package) you have no business being there. 2nd gen you loose all the tech but it's an awesome truck. 4.0 is the best motor Toyota has put in a truck since the 22re. You still get nessities though, Bluetooth and... Electronic mirrors? Power windows? It's up to you and your wants and needs are all that matter. Personally I think the 3rd gen is a nicer truck, but the 2nd gen is the better truck.

Popular Mechanics once said, you should do the first oil change at 500 miles and then 1000 miles. On my new cars, I did the first one at 1000 miles.

First oil change I would have left the oil in longer, because they put chemicals and additives to help break the engine in properly.

not at all. they do not add anything to the oil from the factory for break in. id love to see some documentation from toyota if you have it.

Speaking from experience. I’ve worked at 2 Honda dealerships and Toyota and have bought 3 new cars.
This is what the techs told me, you do do though.

Just make sure the oil meets Toyota 0w20 requirements and specs for this engine. You should be fine... check the back label.
